Effect of a reading improvement program on success of certain students in the Naval Pre-Flight School and Aviation Training

"The purpose of this research was twofold: (1) to determine within the limits of the data available, the effect, if any, of a reading improvement course on the success of certain students in other areas of study and subsequent aviation training, and (2) to present technical data describing the trend of improvement in reading speed and comprehension at the conclusion of a formal training course in reading and related study skills. Although the first purpose was of primary concern, a thorough analysis of the apparent changes in raw reading speed and comprehension was possible with the statistics utilized in the study. It was not intended, or even possible, to set up a control group to validate any findings. At Risk Students and Resiliency

Many “at risk” students are successful in middle school and high school, and are college bound, despite the fact that they face numerous factors that place them at-risk for academic failure or for dropping out of school. One of the key factors that makes these students unique and academically successful is resiliency. Resiliency is identified as the ability to recover or adjust easily from misfortune or change. Resiliency might also be defined as an individual’s ability to effectively cope with challenges in a stressful environment. However, this definition does not account for those who are, at one point, not able to effectively cope with challenges, but who are able to reverse this cycle over time. This study sought to better understand the nature by which Hispanic students who were previously failing academically were able to reverse that cycle and become academically successful. For the purpose of this study, resiliency is defined as a process in which individuals overcome hardship and adversity to create lives that are meaningful and successful. What do Hispanic students do that makes them resilient and academically successful after experiencing academic failure? This research study addresses how students move from school related risk to academic resiliency. Many studies explore the qualities of resilient traits, but do not examine how resilient characteristics develop over time and through the interplay of one’s social and personal experiences. Often times, it is assumed that academically successful students have always been resilient, but in many instances, this might not be the case.

The study is the result of a 'journey of discovery'. The fruits of an analytical and purposely open-minded process, which sought neither to prove nor disprove some pre-existing theory, regarding either the nature or influencing drivers of the entrepreneur and entrepreneurship; but rather progress through a subjective review of past and current thinking on the topic. Only then, armed with that insight, proceeded to both test and possibly re-discover the underlying evolutional and constituent realities of this most elusive of subjects. The desired resultant goal of this process is to help define a methodology by which to better identify the principle traits that make up successful entrepreneurial companies and most importantly, the individual entrepreneur(s) that lead them. Should such benchmarks show reliability of purpose, they would certainly help provide both the Institutional and Venture Capital community with a better and more insightfid understanding and evaluational mechanism of venture ready Entrepreneurs thereby leading to a streamlining of their funding processes. This process of discovery commenced by drawing on existing literature and defining what was to be one of the principal subject matters for analysis - the nature of entrepreneurship itself and specifically whether entrepreneurship was an 'art' or a 'science'? Was it learned or instinctive? And whether its existence could actually be formulated, and thereby predicted. The results of this initial process were revealingly rather ambiguous. For while alluding to the existence of a workable methodology by which to deliver an insight into the potential success or failure of an entrepreneurial venture, the contention that a commonality of entrepreneurial characteristics and predispositions existed were almost entirely dismissed. As a result, the subsequent research sought to test this perception and to identify the key constituent characteristics and motivars of the successful entrepreneur. To do so, a multi-dimensional entrepreneurial model was formulated and, in turn, tested through the development of a three tiered qualitative analysis methodology. Firstly, one that encompassed a relatively broad-based pool of approximately 45 entrepreneurs from pre-selected Small Medium Enterprises. From this number 12 subjects were in turn further tested utilising pre-defined methodologies; with four of them actually subjected to in-depth one on one interviews and subsequent analysis. Contrary to conventional thought, the evaluational amalgam of this qualitative process significantly revealed a reliably high degree of commonality of specific traits among entrepreneurial subjects reviewed. In addition, an exciting and valuable insight into the mind of the entrepreneur was revealed; one that within the study is described as the 'third dimension' of entrepreneurial motivation, and one that the author contends could unlock the door to an even deeper understanding of this most elusive of subject matters and form a strong basis for further research.

Critical Success Factors of Operating Performance Study for Listed Electronic Companies in Taiwan

The study examines the critical success factors(CSF) of Operating Performance for the listed electronic companies in Taiwan. The listed electronic companies were divided into the higher/lower operating performance groups by financial indexes, then there are three questionnaires designed in order to get a better understanding on recognition of critical success factors and doing of critical success factors by top management. Five dimensions of CSFS are identified¡Gcapability in process and marketing, design and planning, R&D and brand, manufacturing and low-cost, technical support and raw materials support. Using statistical analysis approaches such as factor analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA¡Athe results of the study as follows¡G 1. There are significant differences on the two dimensions of recognition of critical success factors: design and planning, manufacturing and low-cost, between the higher/lower operating performance firms. According to the recognitions of the higher operating performance firms OEM and ODM are key points for critical success factors. 2. There are significant differences on the three dimensions of doing of critical success factors¡Gprocess and marketing, design and planning, R&D and brand between the higher/lower operating performance firms. The higher operating performance firms focus on add-value field (process and marketing, design and planning, R&D and brand). The higher operating performance firms take risk of marketing and R&D than those of the lower operating performance firms, therefore the higher operating performance firms get better performances. 3 (1) Comparing recognition of critical success factors with doing of critical success factors, the study find two dimensions of process and marketing, design and planning are significant differences for all of firms. In other words they should make improvements of two dimensions to keep up with the lead firms all over the world. (2) The higher operating performance firms should establish independent technique capability to avert the foreign firms from technique control. (3) The lower operating performance firms should focus on capability of R&D and brand. but, in fact, there is no strong evidence that the paradigm of the listed electronic companies in Taiwan.

In recent years, due to the improvement of living standard and the increase of national income, the market size of department stores has been expanding constantly .In addition to the greater number of development cases, there are many new department stores and shopping malls being built in succession. These situations make department stores confront with gradually increasing challenges. In such competitive environment, these department stores have become so called¡¨ the stronger gets stronger and the weaker gets weaker¡¨. In Taiwan, seventy percent of the total sales in department stores are nearly taken by several groups of department stores, and single business running has become considerably difficult. However, it can be found that HANSHIN DEPARTMENT STORE accounted for almost 37 percent of market sales which was in Kaohsiung in 2005 .Even HANSHIN DEPARTMENT STORE¡¦ s sales got nearly three times as much as that of the second place in Kaohsiung. Although HANSHIN DEPARTMENT STORE lacks abundant resources of chain stores, it can successfully take the sales top of department stores in Kaohsiung .In this case, its business model is worth exploring. Therefore, the object of this research is HANSHIN DEPARTMENT STORE. The purpose of this research is trying to find out the key success factors of how to manage department stores by reviewing relevant literature and making interviews. I hoped that these research results will be useful for department stores to improve development in the future.
