Rajnochová, Markéta January 2017 (has links)
The diploma thesis focuses on the water distribution system functioning without chlorine-based disinfectant. This thesis contains research of documented cases of examples of drinking water distribution systems both abroad and in the Czech Republic, which do not use disinfectants. Moreover, the thesis pay attention to chlorine and its effects on bacteria. The thesis deals with the first assessment of water supply structure, which determines whether the water supply structure is suitable for operating without disinfectant. The thesis describes the process of transition to the disinfectant-free operation and determines the undesired events, which may occur with the ending of the use of disinfectant. As a part of the research, the thesis examines the water supply system in village Kateřinice, to determine if it is suitable for operation without disinfectant.

Hydrologic-economic appraisal of inter-basin water transfer projects

Van Niekerk, P. H. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa‟s hydrological and geographical characteristics, coupled with the location of a large part of its mineral endowment, required the development of the complex Vaal River Supply System, including inter-basin water transfer (IBT) projects which have been in operation for over twenty-five years. This research compares the actual water transfers of two such IBTs with their original, appraisal stage, predictions. Transfers are shown to be significantly less and also more variable than predicted. Further research reveals that the state of the receiving system has a large bearing on year-to-year decisions regarding transfers. Past appraisals, following what is called the Incremental Approach, do not adequately consider the likely future inter-basin transfer operating regime. Examination of six case studies, four South African, one Chinese and one Australian, shows that the Incremental Approach is still in general use – despite tools available for an improved approach. A new approach is proposed to upgrade estimations of variable costs associated with water transfers – often substantial life-cycle cost components of IBTs. The generally used unit reference value (URV) measure for appraising and ranking water resource projects in South Africa is also rooted in the economic theory of cost-effectiveness. This shows that the current approach is conceptually flawed; it fails to distinguish between water transfers and effectiveness outputs. The determination of the URV equation is expanded and improved. The upgraded appraisal approach, inclusive of the improved URV methodology, is named the Comprehensive Approach. A step-wise demonstration of the Comprehensive Approach is provided. Uncertainty regarding future water transfers and associated variable costs are provided for by stochastic simulation modelling. Decision analysis theory is applied to obtain the appropriate input value of variable costs. It is shown that the Comprehensive Approach can lead to an outcome significantly different from the Incremental Approach. The research provides new insights, placing water resource planning practitioners in a better position to recommend appropriate IBTs in future. These insights can also be transferred to the design of institutional and financial models related to IBTs, as well as the configuration and operation of supply systems including sea-water desalination projects.

Energy production with mini and micro hydropower plants in the water supply system network.

Sosnoski, André Sandor Kajdacsy-Balla 10 April 2015 (has links)
Hydropower energy production is facing limitations in their capacity to grow due directly to environmental and space limitations, questioning the actual economic benefits that hydropower have always had compared to other energy sources. In order to face this problems and to propose a new technology, the study focus on the potential of hydropower generation in the water supply systems (WSSs) network that are yet to be studied. Developing this new technology means the introduction of mini and micro hydropower plants in the WSS network. This study intends to develop a methodology and evaluate mini and micro hydropower potential, adopting optimization and modeling tools to accelerate and facilitate the identification procedures of potential installation points and the possibility of implementing pressure controls in the form of turbines in the network. The study considers all WSS peculiarities and restrictions, evaluating the introduction of electro hydraulic equipment and their interference and complementarity when considering energy consumption and production that would make the installation feasible. There is also a discussion about how will this technique be implemented in the network without interfering in water supply, and the logistics, costs and how energy distribution issues can be treated, including turbines type and configuration and also the activation timetables. All these features will be linked and treated with an optimization method that can provide decision making easier, locating production units and evaluating benefits and restrictions imposed by the environment. The construction of this procedure will be applied in a case study in the Piquete municipality in São Paulo, Brazil.

However, the need to revise the actuals methodological procedures that maintain the water quantity and water quality in satisfactory levels for domestic consumption has caused the World Health Organization to propose a new methodology called Water Safety Plan (WSP), still incipient at state of Goiás. In this way, this study aims to propose Safety Plan of Water to 21 cities located at the state of Goiás that presenting WSS managed by local governments. The study was divided into two chapters. The first chapter characterized the WSS of this 21 cities in the state of Goiás, including the collect, treatment and distribution of treated water, and identified ways of managing providers of sanitation services. It was observed that 61% of the supply systems provide by surface water supply system (SWSS). Mixed water supply systems (MWSS) and underground water supply system (UWSS) found up to 50% non-specific departments and 50% for the departments, respectively. Regarding the source of supply, it was noted that the worst results for the quality of supply source were assigned by the WSS managed by non-specific sanitary services departments. Only the cities Abadiânia, Corumbá de Goiás, Mineiros, Rio Quente, Trombas, Caldas Novas, Catalão, Panamá and Senador Canedo add fluorine to their treated water. In relation of the reservation and distribution system of treated water, there is the prevalence of elevated tanks. The worst scenarios for the reservation system and treated water distribution were found at the cities Cachoeira de Goiás, Guarinos, Mossâmedes, Nova Roma, Paranaiguara and São Simão. It was concluded that the WSS have diverse scenarios regarding the treatment of the water and the planning monitoring and maintenance of them are deficient. The second chapter identified the elements of risk perceived by the population associated with water resources. They evaluated the dangerous events by qualitative and quantitative techniques applied to goianos WSS managed by the own cities. The WSS were evaluated by collect system component, raw water reservoir and adduction (A); water treatment system (B); reservation system and distribution of treated water (C). The studied cities that have more high and very high risk, considering all components of the systems, are Cachoeira de Goiás, Guarinos, Mossâmedes, Nova Roma, Paranaiguara and São Simão. Regarding the UWSS, it seems that the A system component registered the same percentage to Cachoeira de Goiás and Guarinos. The B and C system components registered 62.5% and 50% at Cachoeira de Goiás and 75% and 78.5 % at Guarinos. The MWSS with the highest percentage of high and very high risks were situated at the cities Santa Rita do Novo Destino and Nova Roma (52.4 % for question A). Mossâmedes and Nova Roma were the cities that had the highest number of high risks and too high risks for the components B and C in MWSS. The cities Paranaiguara and São Simão had UWSS with the highest number of high and very high risk. The WSS at cities in the state of Goiás managed by the own cities feature deficiencies in the safe management of the water distributed to the population. It is necessary to adopt methodologies that addresses all components of the WSS regardless of system type.

Luis Herinque MagalhÃes Costa 31 May 2010 (has links)
COSTA, L.H.M. Use of hybrid genetic algorithm in the operation in water supply system considering energy efficiency. Fortaleza, 2010. 146 p. Thesis (Doctorate) - Federal University of CearÃ, Fortaleza, 2010. In general, operational rules applied to water distribution systems are created to assure continuity of the public water supply, without taking into account variations of the energy costs during a day. This causes an elevation of the energy costs due to the pumps. Furthermore besides rational use of energy by the pumps, there are other aspects which should be considered in order to achieve an optimized operation of a water transmission system, such as the daily variation of the water demand and the requirements regarded minimum and maximum water levels in the tanks and pressure requirements in the nodes of the water network. The objective of the present work is to develop a computer code which will determine on optimized operation rule for the system which will reach minimum costs of energy used by the pumps. The system is based in the use of Genetic Algorithms (GA) and the hydraulic network computer system EPANET. The GA for of the system is responsible for the search for rules of low energy costs and the hydraulic calculations are done by EPANET. Besides, one major innovation proposed by this research is the introduction of the Hybrid Genetic Algorithm which in order to reduce the stochastic standard aspect of the GA. The proposed methodology was applied to three study cases: two hypothetical and one real which was located in the city of the OurÃm, Portugal. The results of these three study cases clearly show the superiority of the hydrid GA over the standard GA. The hybrid GA not only obtained better solution but also took much less time to run. Finally, it is expected that the use of this methodology will lead to more real time applications.

Hårdstedt, Martin January 2002 (has links)
The Finnish War 1808-1809 started in February 1808 by a Russian attack on Finland and ended by the peace treaty of Fredrikshamn in September 1809. The peace meant the dissolution of the six-hundred-year old Swedish-Finnish realm. The Finnish War 1808-09 was fought in the poor and isolated areas of the north of Sweden and Finland. This thesis deals with the preconditions for the supply of an army and warfare in the northern parts of Finland and Sweden in the period 1808 – 1809. The problems of the supply service and the role of local civilian society within the military supply system are the focus of attention. The thesis aims at posing new questions as well as supplying a new perspective on the nature of warfare at this period of time. A modified picture of the Finnish War of 1808-1809 will also be presented. Three areas of problems are addressed: 1) The resources in the war zone, war plans and supply organization; 2) Logistical problems; 3) The role of civilian society as a resource within the military supply system. Both the Swedish Army and the Russian Army are examined. Geographically the scope of the thesis is restricted to three counties in northern Sweden and Finland, namely Västerbotten in Sweden, Oulu and Vaasa in Finland. The most significant findings of this thesis are that the preconditions for supply during the Finnish War 1808-1809 are to a large extent equal to the ability and the will of the local population to offer provisions and render services. It can also be shown that supply was instrumental in the warfare during certain critical periods, especially in the summer of 1808. The difference between the Russian and the Swedish supply systems is to a large extent indicative of the outcome of the war. The Russian decentralized supply system proved more flexible than the Swedish did, despite an apparently superior organization of the latter. Additionally, it is an important realization that supply as a key factor in warfare is not made up of just delivery of food stuff and forage but also comprises vital functions like grinding of flour and baking of bread. From a European perspective the issue of supply proves to be a difficult one in Finland as well as in other peripheral states, e.g. Spain. When the local resources are sparse a supply system based on storage is required on the one hand and systematic co-operation with the local population on the other. Operation Of Water Distribution Networks

Sendil, Halil 01 February 2013 (has links) (PDF)
With continuously increasing urbanization, consumer demands and expansion of water supply systems, determination of efficient pump schedules became a more difficult task. Pumping energy costs constitute a significant part of the operational cost of the water distribution networks. This study aims to provide an effective daily pump schedule by minimizing the energy costs for constant and also for multi tariff of electricity (3 Kademeli Elektrik Tarifesi) in water distribution network. A case study has been performed in an area covering N8.3 and N7 pressure zones which are parts of Ankara water distribution network. Both pressure zones consists of 3 multiple pumps in pump station and one tank having 5000 m3 storage volume each. By using genetic algorithm based software (WaterCAD Darwin Scheduler) least-cost pump scheduling and operation policy for each pump station has been determined while satisfying target hydraulic performance requirements such as minimum and maximum service pressures, final water level of storage tank and maximum velocity in pipeline. 32 different alternative scenarios have been created which include multi tariff energy prices, constant tariff energy price, insulated system condition, uninsulated system condition and different pump combinations. The existing base scenario and alternative scenarios which were prepared by using optimal pump schedules have been compared and the achievements of optimizing pump operation have been analyzed. At the end of the study, a satisfying result has been observed that by using determined optimal pump schedule, minimum % 14 of total energy cost can be saved in existing water supply system.

The large number of global players in the market has led the automotive industry chain to incessantly seek improvements in operations management to increase their results and, based on this fact, this paper presents a proposal for integrating the techniques and approaches of Lean Manufacturing and Theory of Constraints through an action research application, aiming at improving the material supply system of welding cells from a chassis frame assembly line. In the first stage were presented the concepts and possibilities of integration of both theories and, from an initial diagnosis of the supply system, changes were proposed in an evolutionary way, in which improvements based on Lean Manufacturing were implemented on each experiment round, culminating in the implementation of improvements based on the Theory of Constraints, integrating both concepts. The final result confirms the efficiency of the integration of these two approaches as a way to improve processes, which contributed to an 89% decrease of the supply cycle times of the studied target cell. This result is better than the result obtained using only one of the techniques, without the need for investments and / or significant expenses.

Energy production with mini and micro hydropower plants in the water supply system network.

André Sandor Kajdacsy-Balla Sosnoski 10 April 2015 (has links)
