MUTE SWAN IMPACTS ON NATIVE WATERBIRDS AND SUBMERGED AQUATIC VEGETATION IN ILLINOIS

Phillips, Adam C. 01 December 2010 (has links)
Mute swans (Cygnus olor), an exotic species of waterfowl, have been found to negatively impact native waterbirds and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) communities in the Chesapeake Bay and lower Great Lakes. Mute swans were first recorded in Illinois in 1971 and their population is small, but growing. In 2008-09, I studied mute swans in central Illinois to investigate whether they negatively impacted waterbirds through aggressive actions and SAV through over-grazing. I also estimated mute swan territory size to estimate potential habitat exclusion and population growth potential. Mute swan territory size averaged 7.0 ha, allowing the current population of approximately 60 breeding pairs to increase to over 125 pairs. I did not find that mute swans reduced above-ground SAV, although I did find that below-ground biomass was reduced where mute swans fed freely. Mute swan aggression was most frequent in early spring and decreasing throughout the breeding season. Most waterbirds were found just as close or closer to mute swans as to control points, although gadwall (Anas strepera) were found farther away perhaps suggesting either avoidance or exclusion. As mute swans become more abundant in Illinois, further monitoring is necessary to prevent significant negative impacts to wetlands and waterbirds.

Ekonomický rozvoj jihoasijských zemí / Economic development of Asian countries

Regent, Kamil January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this work is to verify Rostow's Stages of growth model and the Solow-Swan growth model empirically using statistical data from Asian countries. In the theoretical part ("Teoretická část"), the main characteristics of the Rostow's Stages of growth model and the Solow-Swan growth model are explained. The empirical part ("Empirická část") consists of the empirical verification based on statistical data from a total of 51 Asian countries. This includes 47 independent Asian states, 2 partially recognized states (Palestine and Taiwan) and 2 dependent territories (Hong Kong and Macao). The conclusion is devoted specifically to the People's Republic of China and in particular to the evaluation of its economic development, including efforts to predict future developments in relation to Czech businesses.

Análise do transporte de sedimentos na região central da Baixada Santista (SP) através de modelagem numérica / Analysis of sediment transport in the central region of Baixada Santista (SP) through numerical modeling

Coelho, Thiago Marques 21 December 2011 (has links)
This study aimed to analyze the sediment transport in the central region of Baixada Santista (SP) using the numerical model ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System) coupled to the numerical model SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore) in simulations representing the months of August 2009 and January 2010. The results suggested peaks in sediment transport, especially on the continental shelf and the Bay of Santos, during the passage of frontal systems, achieving values of 4,2 kg m2 s1 nearshore. The lowest rates of concentration of suspended sediment in the water column occurred during periods of neap tides, without the presence of strong winds and incidence of waves with high energy. In both simulated months, the bedload transport found in the coastal area of Praia Grande was predominantly to the southwest, with the highest rates of transport observed in the month of August, with values of 1 x 10 kg m2. The rate of sedimentation in the upper estuary has been on the order of 1 cm year1, in agreement with the data available in the literature. The numerical model represented the transport patterns of sediments found in the region in a satisfactory way.

Teorema de Serre-Swan para grupoides de Lie étale / Serre-Swan\'s theorem for étale Lie groupoids

Conrado, Jackeline 12 December 2016 (has links)
In this work we have two main goals. The first one is to extend the Serre-Swan\'s theorem. Our second goal is to prove, if two étale Lie groupoids are Morita equivalence then the category of modules over its convolution algebra are Morita equivalence, and this equivalence preserve the subcategory of modules of finite type and of constant rank.

Biogeochemical constraints on the growth and nutrition of the seagrass Halophila ovalis in the Swan River Estuary

Kilminster, Kieryn Lee January 2006 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] Biogeochemical processes in seagrass sediments influence growth and nutrition of seagrasses. This thesis investigates the below-ground interactions between biotic and abiotic factors that influence seagrass nutrition and growth, with focus on a small species of seagrass, Halophila ovalis (R. Br.) Hook ƒ., from the Swan River Estuary, Western Australia. Seagrass showed significantly lower growth and an increase in leaf nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations with increased organic matter loading. With maximal light reduction, lower growth rates and average leaf weights were observed, and leaf nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were higher. Light reduction was also shown to increase bioavailability of inorganic nutrients within porewater of seagrass sediment . . . Sulphide was hypothesised to have an inhibitory effect on nutrient uptake of Halophila ovalis. Below-ground sulphide inhibits the photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II at sulphide concentrations greater than 1 mM. Sulphide exposure enhanced phosphate uptake, with no significant effect on ammonium uptake of H. ovalis. This thesis demonstrates that biogeochemical processes both constrain the potential growth of seagrasses and influence the nutrient status of seagrass tissue. Consideration of the influence of sulphide stress on seagrasses is likely to be particularly important for anthropogenically influenced aquatic systems, where inputs of organic matter are enriched relative to pristine ecosystems. A better understanding of biogeochemical processes will allow researchers to predict how future changes in sediment chemistry will influence seagrass meadows.

Petrů, Miroslava January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to describe the use of Swan-Ganz catheter, epidural catheters and temporary pacemakers in intensive care. Another objective is to investigate the level of knowledge and their subjective evaluation of health workers operating in the post-operative cardiac surgery in nursing care of patients with implantable Swan - Ganz catheter, the epidural catheter and temporary pacemaker. The selected nursing interventions are crucial in the field of cardiac surgery. In the theoretical part deals with the definition of basic concepts to selected performances from a nursing perspective. In theory I connected the few literary sources with knowledge from my own experience. In the practical skills required are concretized and processed on a quantitative approach using statistical procedures. To obtain the data questionnaire technique was used. The level of knowledge of respondents postoperative cardiac surgery department responsible level sufficient knowledge or very good. The investigation found alarming was the fact that half of all respondents in the knowledge test erred in ruling wedge pressure measurement parameters of the pulmonary artery catheter. The nursing interventions, which often occurs in the intensive care deserves more attention from management facility that would provide...
