Our Veils Anticipate Our Shrouds: Eroticism in the Films of Catherine Breillat

Richter, Nicole Marie 15 May 2009 (has links)
This dissertation is an authorship study of the controversial contemporary French film director Catherine Breillat. Using screen captures to provide visual evidence for the philosophical and theoretical perspectives staked out by Breillat, I perform close analysis of the following six films: Une Vrai Jeune Fille (1976), 36 Fillette (1988), Romance (1999), À Ma Soeur (2001), Brève Traverseé (2001), and Anatomie de L'enfer (2004). Using theory only to supplement interpretations, I draw on the work of George Bataille, Stanley Cavell, and Slavoj Zizek. Breillat's films work through a series of important philosophical ideas integral to an account of eroticism: the paradox of speaking about silence; achieving purity through an encounter with disgust; the singularity of individual desire; the split in identity between the mind and the body; the relationship between sex and death; the relationship between the taboo and transgression; and the violence of female desire. Breillat's films encourage viewers to alter their thinking about sexuality and liberate themselves to lead a more fully erotic life. The capacity of Breillat's films to free eroticism is their most important contribution not only to film history, but also to the totality of human experience.

On that learning journey, the author will propose the actualization of a performative-installation that transmits sensitive signs (figurative and figural ones) of sadomasochism. The theoretical traverse lines come from Bruno Latour’s symmetrical anthropology, Antonin Artaud’s theatre of cruelty, Clarice Lispector’s literature, the philosophy of the sensible by Jacques Rancière with the nomadic philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, the Performance Studies, and the dissident knowledges from Queer Theory, specially the contrasexual thinking by Paul Beatriz Preciado. Taking sensation and representation during this learning, the lines of force will be sought by allowing the anthropologic and artistic knowledge to move through the simultaneity of cultural and natural agencies which, in the poststructuralist turn, soar towards new perspectives on what arts, genders, sexualities, the current machines of production-injunction-reappropriation of pleasures and the technologies of bodies could be. To sum up, this dissertation has affect as an axe whose sciences named methodology and the percept as an epistemology of the lived experience.

Willing Participant: The Emergent Sexuality of Post-Feminist Women

Ford, Ashley 01 January 2006 (has links)
Discussions about sexuality often entail examinations of ethics and acceptable behaviors. It is difficult to create an environment in which honest conversations about sexual mores are supported and discussed without judgment My aim in this thesis work is to explore such taboo sexual practices as dominant/submissive relationships without attempting to define its ethics or psychological indications, as well as document the progress of my artwork as I examine both my sexuality and that of the women of my generation. I have created a series of drawings and photo-collage constructions entitled Willing Participant, which visually explores sexual practices that have traditionally been deemed deviant or unacceptable. The research for this thesis includes an examination of my visual work preceding this series, a survey of the sexual attitudes of my peers and research in established Feminist theory. The result of this work is a springboard from which my artwork can progress? alongside my generations emergent and evolving sexuality.

Jakobsson, Hilda January 2006 (has links)
