Tunisiens demokratisering : En fallstudie / The Democratization of Tunisia : A Case Study

Jarl, Kajsa January 2020 (has links)
The people in Tunisia demanded democracy and civil liberties, which led to large-scale demonstrations against the Tunisian regime in December 2010. The demonstrations against the authoritarian regime was considered to be the beginning of the Arab Spring. Of all states that was affected by the Arabic Spring, Tunisia became that one country that succeeded their transition from an authoritarian state to a democratic one. In order to analyze why Tunisia became a democratic state, this study aims to clarify what factors that affected the democratization process. Through the theoretical framework of Samuel P. Huntington, the factors that affected the third wave democratization are used in this study in order to analyze the Tunisian democratization and transition. Through analyzation; deepening legitimacy problems of the regime and economic growth was considered to affect the Tunisian democratization. Actions of external actors partly affected the country’s democratization. However, religious changes and snowballing effects was considered not to have an impact on the democratization and transition towards democracy.

Bilden av islam : En historiografisk studie om islam i svensk forskning

Baftija, Arif January 2020 (has links)
The image of Islam A historiographical study of Islam in Swedish research. A society`s image of a foreign people, culture and religion changes constantly depending on social, political and other important events. Today Islam is the second largest religion in Sweden after Christianity and that is why it has become important to study the Swedish image of Islam, Muhammed and the Islamic world during the last century. This study is a historiographical and examines the work of six different Swedish authors between the year 1918 to 1930 and 1979 to 2011. The aim of studying these works is to examine whether there has been changes in the Swedish view of Islam, Muhammed and Muslim societies. The theoretical starting point of this study is based on the economist Amartya Sen`s view on identity as multidimensional. According to Sen, a too strong emphasis on ethnic, cultural and religious identities tends to create antagonism and conflicts between different group of peoples. That is why, according to Sen, it is important to emphasize the similarities between different cultures instead of only focus on their differences. Also, Samual P. Huntington`s thesis that emphasizes the differences between religious civilizations in the world who struggle for power and influence is used in this study. The investigation shows that there are differences between the authors from 1918 to 1930 and 1979 to 2011 in their description of Islam, Muhammed and Muslim societies. While the older authors focus mostly on Islam`s past, the contemporary authors deal mostly with Islam in present times. The investigation also demonstrates that the older authors in general give a positive description of Islam`s earlier history, while they depict Islam and Muslim societies as stagnant and reactionary in modern times. The result confirms earlier studies who show similar tendencies on description of Islamic and other Non-Western societies.

Erdoğans Turkiet 2005-2015 : En analys av landets demokratiska utvecklingsriktning och dess bidragande faktorer

Stenström, Robin January 2016 (has links)
This essay aims to answer how domestic politics and events have affected the democratic development in Turkey from 2005 until 2015. Two questions are being discussed and answered; how has the democratic development in Turkey between 2005 and 2015 played out, and; which internal factors have contributed to the democratic development direction. The study is a theory consuming case study with both an explanatory and descriptive approach. The theoretical framework is built upon theories regarding democratization, regime types challenges of democratic consolidation are collected from well-established scientists. This framework is used on the empirical material of the study to bring forward answers to the research questions. The results of the study show that after some positive democratic around 2005, the democratic development has taken an anti-democratic turn after 2011. What could be described as an electoral democracy with liberal democratic tendencies in 2005 is 2015 better described as a hybrid regime, with authoritarian tendencies.

A Critical Analysis of the Writings of Samuel P. Huntington on Political Stability and Violence

Stansell, Loran Wade 05 1900 (has links)
Samuel P. Huntington has argued that political stability is dependent on the degree of institutionalization of participation in the political system. Critical analysis of hypotheses reveals serious flaws in his logic. His concepts were shown to be very hard to make operational and to test. The main hypothesis of a direct relationship between institutionalization and stability was shown to be influenced most likely by additional intervening variables. This study seeks to survey and analyze some of the problems which have arisen with the present state of theory in comparative politics. However, this thesis is particularly interested in .Huntington's work which covers the evolution of his thinking regarding the relation of violence and of political stability, i.e., the degree of government and not the form, with the institutionalization of participation.

Úvahy o globálním řádu po skončení studené války: perspektiva Francise Fukuyamy a Samuela P. Huntingtona / Reflections on the Global Order after the End of the Cold War: the Perspective of Francis Fukuyama and Samuel P. Huntington

Jurásek, Miroslav January 2009 (has links)
The times coming with the End of the Cold War were very turbulent. Politicians had to take into the consideration lots of scenarios and the next global trends to make correct decisions. Most of the very numerous visions of the future global order followed more or less the twofold pattern: order or anarchy. "The End of History and the Last Man" and "The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order" written by two prominent American political scientists Francis Fukuyama and Samuel P. Huntington and published at the beginning of the 90s are the most representative works that fit into this pattern. These provocative and controversial theories have been criticized and empirically challenged by many on one side, on the other side it hasn't impeded others to use them as a starting point for their next analyses. This dissertation thesis is a contribution to the debate between the dissenters and the supporters of these theories from a predictive point of view. Through the research theoretical methodology it is argued that the examined theories are still valid even nowadays because their theoretical essence (or hard core in the Lakatosian research program) has not been refuted yet. Nevertheless, the hard core of the theories determines their very specific character which puts forward the importance of the factors labelled in the Lakatosian framework as an external history of a science. These factors organized according to the Mehtas criteria of so called strong idea are, especially in the social sciences, decisive for how a theoretical construct is accepted in a broader non-academic context. It is demonstrated that both theories fulfill all criteria to be very influential in practice, although the idea of clash of civilizations is even more powerful in this respect. The specific features of all theories are illustrated on two case studies: Union of South American Nations and Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Firstly, the selection of these case studies is justified and secondly, the anomalies in terms of the Lakatosian methodology are identified and then explained. There have been found no unexplainable anomalies, which practically confirms the validity of both research programs on one side, on the other side it facilitates a better assessment of the studied theories in a sense of their interpretative scope and possibilities.
