The present research adopts the bioecological perspective of Bronfenbrenner as theoretical reference. According to its tenet, the contexts are regarded as important influences for human development throughout the life cycle, which is the result of the combined functions of the individual’s characteristics and the nearby processes that are set in such environments. The goals of the research were set from the descriptions of school backgrounds of students who come from institutionalized environments and who are included in regular schools, particularly in classrooms of the EJA segment, and also from the constitution of a comparative analysis between the two environments which are highlighted in the descriptions taken from disabled students’ conceptions and their relatives and teachers’ perspectives about the inclusive school process. As for the participants, we had six disabled students coming from random institutions who were attending the EJA, as well as six relatives and four teachers, the two of whom were teaching Portuguese at EJA’s classroom while the other two, who are specialized in Special Education, work as teachers of the learning resource center. The instruments used in the research were three semi-structured scripted interviews. The collected data were merged into four analytic categories: 1) Description of the school environment 2) Learning 3) School – family rapport 4) Inclusive Process, all of which subdivided into thematic topics that describe the two highlighted contexts. The obtained results revealed that the students and their relatives were neither familiar with the “inclusive school” terminology nor with its applicability. The participants established structural comparisons between the two environments and, according to the data, it was noticeable that the environment of the institutions offered more socializing opportunities because of the established... An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence Skills And Foreign Language Anxiety Of Students At A Private University

Ergun, Ekin 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence skills and foreign language anxiety levels of students from Atilim University Preparatory School, in addition to looking at Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) in relation to gender, high-school background, foreign language background and the level of exposure to English. In the data gathering process, 436 students from a private university preparatory school participated. The data were collected in three steps. At first, the participants were given a demographic inventory in order to get some personal information for the research questions. Then, they were asked to complete the Turkish translation of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale. Lastly, they were given the Turkish adaptation of Bar-On&rsquo / s Emotional Intelligence Quotient Inventory. The data were analyzed by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. To find out the differences between the male and female / foreign language backgrounds / high school types, anxiety levels and level of exposure to Englishrelated tests were used. The results revealed that for students&rsquo / foreign language anxiety levels, there are significant differences in terms of gender, foreign language background and emotional intelligence skills. For students&rsquo / emotional intelligence skills, significant differences were found in terms of gender and high school backgrounds.

STUDENT HELP-SEEKING BEHAVIORS AND TEACHER INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES: EXAMINING THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH U.S. STUDENT MATHEMATICS ACHIEVEMENT

Osborne, Michael C. 01 January 2019 (has links)
Even though the United States (U.S.) spends, on average, more money per student than most Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, it continues to lag behind its international peers in mathematics achievement. This study, which responded to the call for educational reforms that improve the mathematics achievement of U.S. students, aimed to examine the issue of student help-seeking behaviors and teacher instructional practices as they interact to affect student mathematics achievement. The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) defines student help-seeking behaviors as the ways in which students have a propensity to depend on the knowledge and intellect of others, including both their peers and teachers, when attempting to solve problems. Because mathematics is perhaps the most difficult school subject, student help-seeking behaviors should be a critical component of mathematics learning and teaching. Unfortunately, the research literature is barren concerning this important educational issue. This study attempted to produce the first wave of empirical evidence and open up an avenue for future research in this less-charted academic field, with the ultimate goal being to use students’ help-seeking behaviors to improve their mathematics achievement. Using the U.S. sample of 15-year-old students from PISA 2012 (the most recent PISA assessment in which the main area of focus was mathematical literacy), this study intended to determine whether students’ help-seeking behaviors play a significant role in their mathematics achievement, whether this relationship varies from school to school, and whether teacher instructional practices contribute to the school-level variation. Due to the multilevel structure of the data, with students being nested within schools, a two-level hierarchical linear model (HLM) was employed in the analysis of the data. Multiple measures of mathematics achievement were used as the dependent variables for separate analyses. Student help-seeking behavior was used as the key student-level independent variable, while three teacher instructional practices were used as the key school-level independent variables. In addition, several student and school background characteristics were used as control variables. The findings from this study indicate that student help-seeking behavior has a statistically significant effect on all measures of student mathematics achievement, even after controlling for various student background characteristics. On the other hand, the study did not find statistically significant evidence that the effects of student help-seeking behavior on any measure of student mathematics achievement vary from school to school. Overall, the issue of student help-seeking behaviors should be considered a worthy topic to pursue in future educational research. From a practical standpoint, since students’ mathematics achievement is positively associated with their help-seeking behaviors, efforts should be made to educate mathematics teachers on how to encourage their students to be more proactive in seeking help in the learning of mathematics.

Aferdita, Raçi January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate which digital tools are used in SFI teaching of adult students without school background and how these tools are used, what abilities the students practice and what significance digital tools have in these students language learning. To investigate this, I have used a method combination of structured observations in two A-groups as well as semi-structured interviews with two teachers in these groups. The results show that the digital tools used in the A-course are Ipad and apps, Smart Notebook/Smartboard, Computer, Lunis and Powerpoint. These tools are mostly used for individual work, but there are times when some of these tools are used in full class. With the help of these tools, students practice the ability to listen and understand, speak (pronounce), read and understand, write and work independently. The results also show a fairly small interaction between students while working with digital tools. Teachers’ perceptions are that digital tools are of great importance in the language learning of adult learners without a school background. According to the teachers, digital tools offer a wide variety of opportunities for these students to practice and develop all language skills. The study also shows that there are certain areas that can be developed.
