The Effect of Busing on School Success of Minority Students in Urban Elementary Schools

Thomas, Kenneth D., 1939- 12 1900 (has links)
The purposes of this study were (1) to determine whether the mean gains on achievement scores in reading and mathematics for bused students in grades four and five after one year in integrated schools is greater than the mean gain in reading and mathematics achievement scores for similar non-bused students in segregated schools; (2) to determine whether school attendance for bused students is greater than attendance for similar non-bused students; and (3) to determine if attitude toward school, academic self-concept, and general self-concept among groups of subjects are different. The analysis and interpretation of data yielded the following conclusions. 1. The elements associated with increased achievement in reading for fourth-grade minority students are not likely to be positively facilitated by increasing the majority-minority ratio by busing. 2. The elements associated with increased achievement in reading for minority fifth-grade students may be enhanced by busing for racial balance. 3. The elements associated with increased achievement in mathematics for minority fourth-grade students may be enhanced by busing for racial balance. 4. The elements associated with increased achievement in mathematics for minority students are not likely to be facilitated by increasing the majority-minority ratio. 5. The busing of minority students out of their neighborhood may be expected to result in a higher rate of absenteeism. 6. At the fourth-grade level, the change of setting in schools, busing, and a more varied student body would not seem to be deeply felt in any racial group's view toward school. 7. At the fifth-grade level the variances brought about by busing seem to be most profoundly felt by the Anglo population insofar as attitude is concerned. 8. At both grade levels the academic self-concept of Anglo students can be expected to be higher than that of minority students. 9. Among the ethnic groups no consistent trend can be predicted on general self-concept. Fourth-grade Anglo and Black students might be expected to have stronger self-concepts than do the Mexican-Americans. 10. Fifth-grade Blacks in integrated schools can be expected to see themselves more positively than do other racial groups. 11. There is a possibility that in terms of attitude toward school, self-concept, and certain achievement areas, the fifth-grade level would be an optimal time to bus for desegregation purposes.

Skora, Angelita 14 December 2012 (has links)
Acompanha material adicional. / This study aimed to analyze the contributions of the integration of teaching science and mathematics in the early years of elementary school. The transition from open schools to multiculturally sensitive schools

Snelling, H.F. 18 February 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Multiculturalism and Education) / That we live in a very diverse multicultural society which is in the process of change is a reality. Education, as one of the social systems, needs to contribute to the establishment of sound intergroup relationships and eliminate the educational gap that exists within the south African society. To bring about this change we need a system which "will lead to recognising cultural values and differences among and between ethnic groups and individuals and will develop strategies that enhance communication, develop cross cultural understanding and awareness, which will lead to a more positive learning outcome" (Sieburth, quoted by Goodey, 1989:481). The possibility of opening government schools to pupils from the other population J groups was announced early in 1990. In her survey on private open schools Pam Christie found that the opening up of schools did not bring about a greater understanding of the complexity of the South African situation amongst the pupils (1990:99). To undertake the task of eliminating inequalities and help the people of South Africa to understand each other we need an education system which will be "focusing on the need of all pupils to feel creatively comfortable with 1987:7). The cultural diversity as the norm" The introduction of an educational system which is sensitive to the multicultural composition of the South African population will have to take into consideration the institutionalised discrimination which has become a feature of the South African social system and address this issue in an effort to bring about the enhancement of the self-concept of the disadvantaged pupils. The reduction and eventual elimination of prejudice will have to be a central strategy of a multicultural educational system. The important role to be played by teachers in an educational system of this kind is self-evident. Lynch expresses it as follows,"This task involves teachers in a redefinition of their role and an increased recognition of their responsibility for prejudice reduction and eradication as new goals for education in a democracy (Lynch, 1987:xi).

Les représentations sociales de la scolarisation des enfants avec handicap mental / social representation of schooling of children with mental disability

Boukhelif, Meryem 20 April 2015 (has links)
The school attendance of children mental handicap remains an underexploited field of search despite the opulant amount of informations that could bring to adapt to the best the interventions for the success of the Integration Act.The integration into mainstream education is a societal challenge. This service aims children with intellectual disabilities, so they can receive a quality education in a most normal framework possible and thus the ability toestablish contacts with non-disabled peers.Since 1996, laws and regulations engage more and more education brought to all children, whatever their difficulties, the education of mentally disabled with this law encounter difficulties to be achieved outside specialized institutions. The research actions on the education of children with mental handicaps remains very few, this is why research will focus on the representations of society put forward (disabled children's parents, teachers, normal children's parents), and to explain to them in order to identify the conditions for inclusive education.

The promotion of nation-building values in multicultural secondary schools

Singh, Nandkissor 31 January 2004 (has links)
The South African educational system has undergone many changes since 1994. The integration of previously segregated education departments has made it possible for different cultures to be in the same classroom. However, it is the researcher's view that the vast majority of learners in multicultural secondary schools do not exit the system with the skills and attitudes needed to contribute positively to nation-building. This is borne out by the fact that many learners continue to prefer the company and assistance of their own cultural groups for work in class and out of class. Incidents of racial conflict, religious intolerance and cultural discrimination are reported among learners from time to time. The researcher believes that the basis for creating a new society, that is free of fear and discrimination, lies in the imparting and assimilation of nation-building values at multicultural secondary schools. A qualitative method of research was employed as it lent itself to naturalistic inquiry, detailed thick description, inquiry of depth and direct quotations to capture people's personal perspectives and experiences. An extensive literature study of nation-building, nation-building values and multicultural education was conducted. The empirical study was conducted at a local multicultural secondary school. Research techniques such as observation, interviews, completion of an open-ended questionnaire and discussions were used. The researcher was able to ascertain the values that underpin nation-building; the factors that militate against the promotion of nation-building values and strategies that can be used to promote these values at multicultural secondary schools. He has made significant proposals to the Department of Education, which should be carefully considered. Ultimately, the promotion and assimilation of nation-building values at multicultural secondary schools should lead to a progressive and peaceful nation. / Educational Studies / (D.Ed.(Psychology of Education))
