An analysis of early childhood development programmes in South AfricaBridgemohan, Radhika Rani 11 1900 (has links)
This study constitutes an attempt to describe and analyse the quality of
selected early childhood development programmes in South Africa, and
provide criteria by which the quality of programmes could be assessed.
The need for, and importance of, providing quality early childhood
development programmes is highlighted. The influence of educational
pf:lilosophies on programmes is recognised, hence the total development
of the child and educational philosophies related thereto are discussed.
Factors and components within programmes that contribute to high
quality are explored. Moreover, criteria by means of which quality early
childhood development programmes may be assessed, are provided. In
this regard criteria for the formulation of aims, selection and the
organisation of content, assessment, role of the teacher and parent
involvement in programmes are suggested. It is against these criteria
that selected early childhood development programmes in South Africa
are described and analysed.

Veranderende rol van die skoolhoof in die staatsondersteunde (Model C-) skool in die RSARossouw, J. P. (Johannes Petrus), 1953- 06 1900 (has links)

In England and Wales this new approach is labelled Local Management of Schools (LMS), while School-Based Management (SBM) refers to basically the same initiative in the USA and Canada. Many aspects of the South African variation of selfmanagement
of schools, namely the management of state-aided (Model C) schools,
are quite similar to SBM and LMS. In addition to the literature review undertaken for this study, qualitative data have
been gathered through interviews with a number of educationists who are directly involved in the management of state-aided schools. The main focus was on the changed management role of the principal with regard to financial management, staff management, and the management of parent and community involvement
The research concluded with the following findings: A participatory, transparent management style is the key to effective and
successful self-management of schools. Financial management has caused the biggest single change in the task of the
principal of a state-aided school. Every principal ought to consult as widely as possible, and involve as many staff members as is practicable in the financial management of the school.
The principal, management body and parents ought to ensure that a
partnership is developed in which there is openness, mutual trust and
collaboration. The principal, as managing executive, should also try to ensure that the management body functions effectively.
The parents, school community and pupils should be offered the opportunity to participate in a formal, controlled way in the strategic planning and management of the state-aided school / Educational Leadership and Management / D.Ed.

Private education in South Africa : the legal status and management of private schoolsSquelch, Joan Maureen 01 1900 (has links)
World-wide, the nature, purpose and existence of private education has evoked
intense interest and controversial debate. For many, private education presents a legal-moral
dilemma. On the one hand, it is recognised as a fundamental right in terms of freedom of
association, religion and culture. On the other, it raises perplexing moral and philosophical
issues about social exclusivity, selectivity and elitism. Notwithstanding the equally compelling
legal, social, economic, educational and political arguments for and against private education,
private schools in South Africa, which are increasing in number, continue to form an essential and
permanent part of the education system.
Private education is a complex subject which can be researched from a myriad of perspectives. This
study is essentially a legal enquiry into the legal status of private schools in South Africa
within the new democratic constitutional dispensation and how the law affects the organisation,
governance and management of private schools. To this end, the study is confined to a
discussion on legal aspects relating to private school governance, public funding of private
schools, teachers' appointments and discipline, student admission and discipline and religious
freedom. In discussing the legal context of such topics, a number of issues emerged concerning
the complex nature and diversity of private schools, the relationship between the State and
the private school sector, the right of private schools to exist and the implications of the bill
of rights for private schools. Furthermore, the study raises challenging questions about the issues
of choice, autonomy, religious freedom and diversity, which lie at the heart of the establishment
and maintenance of private schools in a democratic society.
Finally, one of the difficulties of conducting such a study is that South African law is complex
and changing, and it is still in a state of evolution, given the recentness of the
Constitution and the bill of rights. This means that while some legal issues pertaining to private
schools are fairly well settled, for the most part it is not possible to provide a comprehensive or
definitive statement about complex and often highly sensitive issues but merely to pose various
legal-education questions and problems for consideration. In time, many of the issues raised will
no doubt be settled by the courts / Educational Leadership and Management / D.Ed. (Educational Management

"Sexist socialising of children in the Sunday schools of the church of the province of Southern Africa : a theological ethical study"Tuckey, Caroline 11 1900 (has links)
Sexist socialisation in the church starts from childhood. The Sunday school, the Christian
community and parents all play a role in transmitting sexist values to children. Sexism is
present in the interpretation, use and teaching of scripture as well as the hierarchy, roles,
structures, language, worship and symbols of the church. These subconsciously influence
children. People's faith may be shaken when the sexist nature of some of these beliefs is
exposed. Sexist socialisation is detrimental as the growth and witness of the church may be
stunted. Hence there is a need to develop non-sexist Christian education. Insights and tools
from feminist theology help in this programme. The conclusions are tentative as such a
process is evolutionary, but important. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / Th. M. (Theological Ethics)

Community involvement in farm schools in the Pietermaritzburg areaDuma, Martin Anthony Nkosinathi 03 1900 (has links)
This study is based on a need for community involvement in farm schools to enhance effective teaching and efficient learning. The rationale behind it was to determine the current state of community involvement in farm schools in the Pietermaritzburg area, with a view to determining the extent to which the current community i nvolvement, namely, the active participation of parents, teachers, the farmer, the church, the state and the private sector could be extended on a large scale.
The study revealed that the community involvement dimension of schooling is central to the teaching profession. If neglected, no effective teaching and efficient learning can materialise. The role of the farm school principal in the realisation of this goal is indispensable. The empirical survey and literature revealed that farm school principals can address the serious shortcoming concerning the participation of community members in the affairs of farm schools. / Educational Studies / M. Coercive agency : James Henderson's Lovedale, 1906-1930Duncan, Graham Alexander 09 1900 (has links)
Any society is by nature coercive and its institutions are no exception. This was true of mission institutions in South Africa. While acknowledging the invaluable contribution of mission education to the development of black South Africans predominantly, it is clear that Lovedale Missionary Institution exemplifies the concept and reality of a ‘total institution’ which was as susceptible to the problems of power relations as any institution, secular or religious. Idris Shah’s concept of ‘coercive agency’ is apposite for this study. Lovedale’s foundation was laid and developed by the first two Principals. In a very real sense, it was perfected by the third Principal of Lovedale, James Henderson who, like his predecessors, emphasised the ultimate aim of conversion through a thorough process of character formation which infiltrated every aspect of life at Lovedale, especially discipline and the programme of industrial education. Those who studied there internalised its ethos in a manner which could not simply be discarded on leaving the Institution for it had become part of their identity, their indigenous personality and traditional life-style having been largely obliterated and reconstructed according to the ideological ideals of western Christian civilisation and European colonialism. Coercive agency was successful in that it effectively encouraged adaptation to missionary ideology. However, this was not an irreversible process for many Lovedale students came to reject the mores of the religion and education they received both during their stay at Lovedale and in later life in a variety of ways as they challenged and resisted the effects of the coercive agency of internalisation. Institutionalisation is, by nature, resistant to change as can be seen in the policies of the respective Principals. Yet, Henderson was able to initiate change while maintaining essential continuity of purpose. Consequently, black people were alienated by a process of ‘exclusion’. The Christian principles of justice, love and peace have a universal application and are appropriate tools for the development of a new model of education in South African society whose mission is to work towards reconciliation between individuals, within society and with the God who wishes to ‘embrace’ the totality of creation. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. An investigation into the utilisation of educational media by primary science teachers in Mankwe district in the North West ProvinceKizito, Rita Ndagire 11 1900 (has links)
This study was an attempt to explore and describe media utilisation from a
Primary Science teacher's perspective, within a qualitative theoretical and
methodological framework.
A brief survey revealed what media was available in the schools, and
observation and interview methods were used to give meaning to the media
utmsation practice in schools.
It was hoped that the results would assist in the construction of guidelines
required to improve media use, and consequently science teaching in the rural
primary schools.
The inquiry revealed that apart from improving educational facilities,
re-motivation of the science teachers was an essential ingredient in the
search for ways of improving media use in Primary Science instruction / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Didactics)

A study of the management problems and possible solutions in state-aided schoolsKnott, Jean Burr Manuel 11 1900 (has links)
The problems concerning the future management of state-aided
(Model C) schools fall into two main categories, namely problems
intrinsic to the Model C schools and the problem of giving
substance to the stated vision of the ANC. Model C schools were
seen as a South African model of school self-management.
A study of the literature relating to school self-management in
general, and how it is practised in various countries, was made
and the management of state-aided (Model C) schools was analyzed.
A impirical investigation was conducted to ascertain the
perceptions of various role-players in school management about
their duties and responsibilities in this regard.
A model for the self-management of state-aided schools, based on
the Caldwell and Spinks' s model, and conforming to various
criteria, is proposed. The proposed model is, in the opinion of
the researcher, applicable not only to State-aided schools, but
to all schools in South Africa as it allows individual schools
to accept as much or as little self-management as is consistent
with the capacity of their communities to provide effective and
efficient service. It also allows schools to accept increases
in self-management as their communities gain in management skills
and expertise. / Educational Studies / D.Ed. (Educational Management)

Onomastiese studie van skoolname by AfrikaansmediumskoleMarx, Isabella Elizabeth 11 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, names of schools as a subdivision of Onomastics are dealt with. School names are researched mainly under the cloak of Semantics and Socio-linguistics. Therefore, terms like reference, convention and a backing of descriptions are referred
to according to the theories of Devitt, Strawson and Kripke. Van Langendonck specifically emphasises the pragmatic nature of proper nouns in his theory the paradox of the meaning of proper nouns which is an important point of departure in the conceptual and pragmatic nature of the names of schools. The underlying motives in respect of school naming are categorized and discussed
according to the motives of origin. Conflicting social factors play an important role in the naming of schools and therefore
names also change. These changes are accentuated and discussed.
The possibility for a country to reflect a national identity in spite of a multicultural and multilingual society, is explored and discussed. / Afrikaans and Theory of Literature / M.A. (Afrikaans)
