O objetivo geral desta pesquisa é propor critérios aplicáveis a bibliotecas universitárias na formação de suas coleções especiais, a partir da experiência da Biblioteca Paulo Geyer. Caracteriza a Biblioteca Paulo Geyer como espaço de guarda de patrimônio bibliográfico universitário de C&T no contexto da Escola de Química. Analisa as bibliotecas como lugares de memória. Aborda a importância das bibliotecas universitárias como guardiãs do patrimônio bibliográfico de C&T. Estuda a importância do desenvolvimento de coleções e da formação das coleções especiais. Ressalta a relevância da Biblioteca Paulo Geyer, no contexto da Escola de Química, da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ. Conceitua o patrimônio, analisando-o segundo a legislação nacional e internacional. Lista as obras que podem vir a compor a coleção especial, utilizando-se de tabelas. Define os critérios para a escolha das obras. Como metodologia, realiza uma pesquisa bibliográfica com características de pesquisa aplicada, dado seu interesse prático. / This study is focused on bibliographic heritage of Science and Technology in universities. Its main objective is to propose criteria that can be applied to university libraries in the formation of their special collections, based on the Paulo Geyer Library experience. Characterizes the Paulo Geyer Library as a guardian of university bibliographic heritage of S & T in the context of the School of Chemistry. Analyzes libraries as memory places. It also tackles the importance of university libraries as guardians of bibliographic heritage of Science and Technology, and the relevance of developing special collections. It proposes to highlight the significance of Paulo Geyer Library as well as the conception of heritage, analyzing it according to national and international legislation. Ranking the works which could be part of the special collection using tables. It defines some criteria for selecting the works. As a methodology it carries out the bibliographic research with characteristics of applied research given its practical interest.

O objetivo da tese é estudar a relação que cientistas mantêm com os documentos produzidos nos laboratórios científicos e tecnológicos, visando buscar elementos que contribuam para a elaboração de um programa de preservação de arquivos de C&T. A metodologia utilizada foi a de aplicação de questionário, por meio de entrevista, aos responsáveis pelos laboratórios dos institutos de pesquisa do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia no Rio de Janeiro. O primeiro capítulo apresenta conceitos básicos e algumas iniciativas do governo na área da preservação documental. O segundo capítulo analisa os limites entre o pessoal e o institucional nos documentos gerados pelos laboratórios, verificando que são tênues e mal definidos. O terceiro capítulo explora os limites entre o público e o privado na documentação oriunda das etapas intermediárias de um processo de pesquisa, verificando que o destino desta documentação é incerto. O último capítulo se dedica a explorar a opinião dos cientistas sobre a importância da preservação dos documentos para a memória científica, verificando que há pouca reflexão sobre o tema. Ao final de cada capítulo são apresentadas as conclusões das análises, bem como são apontadas contribuições para um programa de preservação de documentos de arquivos de ciência e tecnologia. / The aim of this thesis is to study the relationship between scientists and the records produced by scientific and technological laboratories, with the objective of searching elements as to contribute for the elaboration of a preservation program for SciTech archives. The methodology used was the application of a questionnaire as part of an interview, to the professional responsible for the laboratory within research institutes of the Ministry of Science and Technology in Rio de Janeiro. The first chapter presents basic concepts and some initiatives from the government on the area of preservation of records. The second chapter analyses the frontiers between personal and institutional records produced by the laboratories, verifying that they are fragile and poorly defined. The third one explores the boundaries between public and private in the records derived from the intermediary\'s steps of a research process, verifying that their destiny is uncertain. The last chapter is dedicated to explore the opinion of scientists about the importance of the records\' preservation for the scientific memory, verifying that there is very little reflection about this subject. At the end of each chapter, there are conclusions about the analysis, as well as some contributions for a preservation program of science and technology archives.

O objetivo geral deste estudo é disponibilizar a memória da produção científica do curso de Geologia constituída pelo acervo documental publicado pelo IGeo/UFRGS, armazenado na Biblioteca, em ambiente Web. A pesquisa tem caráter quali-quantitativo caracterizada pela fundamentação teórica em fontes de informações bibliográficas, na seleção dos documentos que integram o inventário analítico, na análise do resultado estatístico da avaliação do Website da Memória Virtual e na compilação estatística do levantamento da literatura sobre acervos documentais científicos. As fases metodológicas do estudo foram a pesquisa bibliográfica, o inventário documental, métodos de digitalização de documentos, adoção de padrões internacionais de interoperabilidade entre bases de dados – aponta o uso do Open Archive Iniciative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) e aplicação de técnicas de design de informação no processo de desenvolvimento do Website. In conclusion we have the following results: inventory of the 50 years of scientific production in the course of the Geosciences Institute of Geology, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, including the period 1957-2007, identifing the main topics, authors and type of documents produced and the publication of the Virtual Memory Website, available at <http://www.memoriavirtual.ufrgs.br/ >.
