Master of Music / Department of Music / Frank C. Tracz / This document is based on the preparation, rehearsal, and performance of selected pieces for the Graduate Conducting Recital of Dara C. Jochum. The pieces examined in the theoretical and historical analysis for this report are Old Churches by Michael Colgrass, Little Suite for Band by Clare Grundman, This Is My Father’s World by Franklin L. Sheppard with hymn setting by Fred J. Allen, and Prelude and Primal Danse by Ed Huckeby. This document also contains rehearsal plans and procedures for the preparation of the literature. The recital was performed on March 7, 2008 in Hart Recital Hall on the campus of the University of Central Missouri, and was performed by the members of the Leeton High School Concert Band as well as guest performers from the University of Central Missouri Wind Ensemble.

Tracz / This document is written in support of a conducting recital given in partial fulfillment of the Master’s of Music Education with an Emphasis in Instrumental Conducting at Kansas State University. It encompasses the historical research, theoretical analysis, and rehearsal recommendations and considerations necessary to prepare the selected works for performance. The pieces analyzed are Michael Daugherty’s Motown Metal, Stanley Leonard’s Antiphonies, and Ira Hearshen’s second movement, “after the Thunderer” from Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa. I seek to highlight the significance of these works to the literature of their mediums, and show how they are valuable pieces of literature in the contemporary repertoire. In addition, I offer my philosophies on music learning and literature selection as a means to better understand the process entailed in laying the groundwork for successful authentic learning experiences for conductor and students.

Temporal Shaping : A conductor’s exploration of tempo and its modifications in Weber's Der Freischütz Overture

The aim of this master's thesis is to explore and elaborate on the Wagnerian conception of "tempo modification" and its overall relevance in the temporal shaping of music in orchestral conducting. The argument is based on a study that aims to revitalise and establish the tempo identification as a conductor's primary area of interest. This phenomenon is studied through performances and recordings of Weber's Der Freischütz Overture. Terminology for different perspectives on temporal shaping is proposed. The historical impact of tempo modification is explored through a comparative audio analysis of three central recordings. The same analytical procedures are then subsequently applied to the author's two recordings, and a cross-comparison is carried out of all five recordings. The thesis further discusses the use of reduction as a method for a conductor's score analysis. Through this multi-layered analysis, the thesis suggests that tempo modification is a stylistically and historically contingent phenomenon, the application of which is indeed dependent on structural elements in the score, but most of all dependent on compositional style and performance practice.

Does Content Knowledge Matter for New Teachers?

Pedulla / There is considerable evidence that new teachers are ill prepared for classroom practice, including self-reported evidence collected from teachers (e.g., Levine, 2006), and statistical evidence for differences in the achievement of students with new versus more experienced teachers (Rivkin, Hanushek, and Kain, 2005). In light of the challenges encountered by new teachers (e.g., Levine, 2006), this study examined the value of different forms of teacher knowledge for teachers with different levels of experience. In particular, this study investigated the interactive relationship between teaching experience and teacher content knowledge, and student achievement in mathematics and science. In New York City, Boyd et al. (2009) linked practice-focused teacher preparation to student mathematics achievement in the first year of teaching and teacher content preparation to achievement in the second. However, other studies demonstrated interactions between teaching experience and content knowledge with different interpretations (e.g., Kukla-Acevedo, 2009; Monk, 1994). At the same time, this study examined the interactive relationship between teaching experience and teachers' pedagogical content knowledge, and student achievement. Extant models of teacher career development (Huberman, 1989; National Research Council, 2010) and how teacher education affects student achievement (e.g., Desimone, 2009) offered theoretical grounding for the study. With nationally representative samples of fourth and eighth grade U.S. students--participants in the 2011 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study--this study employed hierarchical linear modeling to address its research questions among an array of student achievement outcomes in the domains of mathematics and science. This study attempted to account for salient student, teacher, and contextual factors, and the probabilities of teachers' receipt of various teacher education "treatments" (i.e., propensity score analysis) to reduce the plausibility of selection threats to internal validity. The study found no evidence for relationships between teacher content knowledge or pedagogical content knowledge and student mathematics and science achievement in fourth and eighth grade. Furthermore, the results indicated no interactive relationships between forms of teacher knowledge and teaching experience, and student achievement in these grades/subjects. Using the multilevel framework, this multi-institutional study took different approaches to study undergraduate students’ retention in engineering programs. The study was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, using Multiple-Institution Database for Investigating Engineering Longitudinal Development, the aim was to control for macro-level factors which may create a selection bias in student admission into engineering programs. The outcome fed the second phase, which aimed to analyze student’s retention for different populations.

Propensity Score Methods as Alternatives to Value-Added Modeling for the Estimation of Teacher Contributions to Student Achievement

The purpose of this study was to examine the potential for using propensity score-based matching methods to estimate teacher contributions to student learning. Value-added models are increasingly used in teacher accountability systems in the United States in spite of ongoing qualms about the validity of teacher quality estimates resulting from those models. Using a large national dataset, teacher effects were estimated for 435 teachers using both value-added and propensity score-based approaches. The two approaches resulted in teacher effect estimates that were moderately correlated, with propensity score-based estimates more highly correlating with the value-added estimates as the matching ratio was increased. For many teachers' students, finding a set of matched control students was impossible unless the set of matching variables was reduced. Results suggest that many teachers have classroom compositions that are unusual, making evaluation of the teachers' impacts on student outcomes problematic. It was also found that, while value-added estimates were relatively insensitive to covariate inclusion choices or method of effect estimation, propensity score-based estimates were somewhat sensitive. Propensity score-based teacher effect estimates offer promise both for better accounting for classroom composition and student background variables and for indicating when a teacher's context is unique with respect to those variables, making the teacher's impact challenging to evaluate.

Integration of the equity markets in the CEE countries - opportunity for international portfolio diversification / Integrace kapitálových trhů ve střední a východní Evropě

There are several advantages of capital markets integration, such as increasing overall market liquidity, improving the scope for diversification and risk sharing. Therefore, the European institutions try to boost capital markets integration among the member states. The aim of this empirical paper is to analyse the level of integration of the main equity markets in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE): the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria from 2001 until 2010 using an integration score analysis. This methodology was proposed by Akdogan (1996; 1997) and later extended by Barari (2004) and by Birg & Lucey (2006). The paper focuses on the developments of regional and global integration of these countries. Findings from this research can be of interest to investors as well as policy makers because the degree of capital markets integration has important implications for cross-border capital flows, financial management, and for the conduct of monetary policy. The results from this paper suggest that the opportunities for portfolio diversification are diminishing in the CEE countries. The diversification benefits were mainly reduced by the accession to the EU, but they did not completely disappear. The findings showed that the global financial crisis in 2008 brought about a rapid change in integration. Global integration increased during the crises, whereas the regional started to decline after years of rising.

Community College Honors Education and Student Outcomes: A Propensity Score Analysis

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of honors education to student success by comparing honors-eligible community college students who met requirements to academically matched peers who opted out of honors participation. Honors program participation was defined as completing 12 or more credit hours of honors-level course work. The population for this study included 452 honors-eligible participants with 95 honors participants (HPs) and 357 non-participants (NPs) from a community college in Tennessee. The sampling frame was generated using a five-year participation window from 2008 through 2013. Propensity score matching alleviated the threat to validity for self-selection bias by controlling for confounding variables such as high school GPA, dual-enrollment participation, ACT score, declared major, community college GPA upon first term of eligibility, parental income, parental education, gender, and age. Major findings of the study were: honors program participants (a) earned a significantly higher numerical final course grade in Composition II, a first-year writing course; (b) earned significantly higher cumulative GPAs the second semester after honors eligibility; (c) earned significantly higher cumulative GPAs upon completion; (d) were significantly more likely to graduate. Conclusions generated from the data analyses indicate that honors education benefits community college students and provide empirical support for increased investment in community college honors education, especially for high-achieving students experiencing poverty. Low-income students were defined as those students receiving the maximum federal Pell Grant award provided to undergraduate students with financial need. Within the study sample, it was determined that 50% of NPs met the low-income threshold whereas 47% of HPs were identified as low-income. These participation rates suggest that more low-income high-achieving students who could substantially benefit from participating in honors are participating less. Further empirical research studies and policy levers should identify ways to increase honors participation for low-income, high-achieving students.

Die eingehende Analyse ausgewählter Aspekte der Wort-Ton-Gestaltung in Gustav Mahlers Vokalsinfonik ist Schwerpunkt der vorliegenden Untersuchung. Prämisse ist Mahlers Ausarbeitung ideenprogrammatischer Intentionen, wobei er sich die besondere Stärke der Musik, geistige Sachverhalte in gewisser Weise präziser als Sprache (die hier ins Symbolhafte ausweichen muss) verdeutlichen zu können, offensichtlich bewusst zunutze gemacht hatte. Die Differenziertheit der musikalischen Textinterpretation, zugleich Fokus der Analysen, weist deutliche graduelle Unterschiede auf. Sie reicht vom ,Vertonungscharakter‘ bis hin zur innigsten Anverwandlung von Musik und Textaussage bzw. -semantik. Wesentlich ist das oft proportionale Verhältnis von Grad der Freiheit, die sich Mahler hinsichtlich der Beziehung der Musik zur formalen Topographie des Textes nimmt, zu Intensität und Vielschichtigkeit der musikalischen Textexegese. Je stärker sich ihre musikalische Umsetzung in Richtung ‚Semantik-Ausarbeitung‘ bewegt, verliert die äußerliche Sprache an Materialität, wobei das im Lied von der Erde zutage tretende Amalgam von sprachlicher Semantik und Musik gesondert zu nennen ist. Letztendlich wird die überwiegend eher unbestimmte Textsemantik durch Mahlers Musik denotiert und in zuvor im Bereich der Vokalsinfonik nicht erreichter Intensität zum Klingen gebracht. / Focal point of this thesis is the detailed analysis of selected aspects of the relationship between music and text in Gustav Mahler’s vocal-instru-mental symphonies. Mahler’s elaboration of programmatic intentions functions as background. The composer obviously used the specific quality of music which is able to make spiritual or immaterial facts clearer than language (which here often has to switch over to symbolism). The variety of the text interpretation by Mahler’s music (on which the analyses are focused) shows distinct differences: from a relatively simple setting to music-character to an intense amalgam of music and semantics of the words. An important result of the analyses is the approximate proportionality between independency of Mahler’s music from the text’s formal parameters and intensity of the musical exegesis of the words. The more the music tends to elaborate the semantics, the more decreases the materiality of language. In this context the semantics-music-amalgam in the final movement of Das Lied von der Erde represents an unique example. Ultimately Mahler’s music supplies the denotation of the text semantics. This intermixture shows previously – in the history of development of vocal symphonic tradition – not heard intensity.

The theoretical part describes the problematics of marketing research. The practical part analyzes the results of marketing research of customers of TEWECO GROUP s.r.o. Based on this information, measures are proposed, which should increase customer satisfaction and bring higher revenue to the company.
