Marqueurs de la dynamique des fluides associée à l'enfouissement des bassins sédimentaires : Exemples du Bassin Permien de Lodève (France) et du North Viking Graben (Mer du Nord) / Fluid dynamics markers associated with burial in sedimentary basin : example of the Lodève Permian Basin (France) and the North Viking Graben (North Sea)

Laurent, Dimitri 18 June 2015 (has links)
This work focus on the characterization of the source and dynamic of compactional fluids during sedimentary burial, through two complementary examples of late orogenic oil-field half-grabens: The exhumed Lodève Permian Basin and a deep buried Jurassic basin in the North Viking Graben (North Sea).Constituting the main part of the thesis, a multi-disciplinary approach was conducted in the Lodève Basin where Ba-F-Cu-Pb polymetalic mineralized systems are trapped into synrift faults and paleokarsts in the carbonate basement at the hinge point of the roll-over. The source, timing and P/T conditions of fluid migration were deduced from the analysis of the microfabric, the fluid inclusions microthermometry, and the isotopic (Sr, S, O, H) and Rare Earth Element (REE) signature. Results are then crossed with a structural and thermal modeling that consolidates the sequence and dynamics of fluid during burial.A similar approach was conducted in the North Viking Graben where fluid markers are restricted to 3D seismic and well core data. Comparable Ba-Pb-Zn veins are reported in basin margin, plugging one of the most important siliciclastic hydrocarbon reservoir in the substratum. This analysis provides additional constraints on basinal fluid behavior and allows us to propose a global dynamic model for various compositions of fluids and reservoirs. We conclude to a polyphase fluid sequence history including:(a) In the carbonate basement of the Lodève Basin, karstic paleocanyon incisions and associated cavities coupled to synrift fault, act as major drain for fluids. These structures are early affected by hypogen-sulfuric karstification in response to the interaction between bacterial oxidation of sulfides entrapped within Lower Permian blackshales and the basement oxidizing aquifer.(b) Disequilibrium compaction initiates overpressure-driven basinal fluid migration towards basin margins, characterized by temperatures around 150-180°C and salinities between 9 et 18wt%eq.NaCl. Isotopic (Sr, S, O) and REE analyses reveal that Ba-M+-rich mineralizing fluids derived mainly from buried blackshales diagenesis. External Fluids coming from the lower crust are also identified that play a key role in fluorite precipitation by the leaching of late hercynian granites (mean temperature of 250°C and salinity > 20wt%eq.NaCl).(c) During the synrift period, fluid overpressure is responsible for the periodic reactivation of fault plane according to seismic-valve process, bedded-control shearing and hydraulic brecciation at the basement-seal interface. These mechanisms induce cyclic polymetallic mineralization by the mixing between in situ formation water and deep ascending basinal fluids.(d) Thermogenic fluids expulsion starts with last basinal fluids during late burial stage. Hydrocarbons thus migrate along the same regional pathways up to the rollover crest, where they are partly rerouted by the previous mineralized baffle.(e) In the Lodève basin, post-rift exhumation of the margins led to the remobilization of synrift deposits by subaerial biochemical processes at the sulfate-methane transition. The latter results from the interaction between the still active hydrocarbon dysmigration with a playa lake sulfate-rich aquifer. Secondary low-temperature barite fronts precipitate then within basement meteoric karsts. In addition to the « source to sink » model of basinal fluids, this work provides new insights on the early plugging of hydrocarbon reservoirs and for the metallogenesis of Mississippi Valley-Type deposits.

Tectonique et hydrologie en mer de Marmara : histoire de l'ouverture de la mer de Marmara et reconstitution de la réponse hydrologique aux variations climatiques depuis le dernier interglaciaire / Tectonic and hydrology in the Marmara Sea : opening of the Marmara basins and reconstitution of hydrological changes since the last interglacial

Kende, Julia 12 March 2018 (has links)
The Marmara Sea is the keystone of a complex hydrological system between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. There, the balance between inputs and outputs has been disturbed during glacial periods when the global ocean level dropped below the sill depths, isolating the Marmara Sea. The alternation of marine and lacustrine sediments reflects these variations. The Sea of Marmara is also an active tectonic structure cut by the North-Anatolian fault northern branch. The ruptures of this continental dextral transform fault, one of the longest in the world, are regularly causing massive earthquakes. Many scientific studies are aiming at characterizing the fault structure and its functioning in the hope of being able to foresee the next earthquake close to Istanbul. This thesis presents two studies tackling this subject. The first one presents an interpretation of the crust geometry based on the analysis of a 3D crustal model built from the inversion of gravity data corrected from the influence of sedimentary basins. From the model, we quantify the role of extension in the basin opening and show the existence of ductile flows, in the lower crust, that spread the thinning away from the basins. The second study purpose was to confirm or reverse the sedimentary age models available in the Marmara Sea through the direct study of the sediments constituting the first main reflector interpreted in the models. We used a broad range of methods to build a new age model for one core such as geophysics, paleo-magnetism, tephrochronology and a paleo-environmental characterization. The results give a date for the first main reflector that is younger than the one assessed by previous studies.

Sedimentology, ichnology, and stratigraphic architecture of the upper Devonian-lower Mississippian Bakken Formation, west-central Saskatchewan

2015 June 1900 (has links)
The Upper Devonian-Lower Mississippian Bakken Formation has recently become a prolific producer of light gravity oil in southeastern Saskatchewan since the advent of horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracture technologies, which has resulted in an increase in geological studies within the area. However, the Bakken Formation of west-central Saskatchewan has been producing heavy oil since the 1950s, and has comparatively received much less attention than its southeastern counterpart. The Bakken Formation is the youngest member of the Three Forks Group and unconformably overlies the Big Valley Formation. In west-central Saskatchewan, the Bakken Formation can be conformably overlain by the Mississippian carbonates of the Madison Group or unconformably overlain by the Lower Cretaceous Mannville Group. A tripartite subdivision is applied to the Bakken Formation, with a mixed clastic/carbonate Middle Member deposited between Lower and Upper Black Shale Members. Based on detailed core description, eight facies have been defined for the Bakken Formation of west-central Saskatchewan: Facies 1 (Lower and Upper Black Shale members), Facies 2 (bioturbated siltstone/sandstone), Facies 3 (wave-rippled sandstone), Facies 4 (bioclastic grainstone), Facies 5 (interbedded mudstone, siltstone, and very fine-grained sandstone), Facies 6 (very fine- to fine-grained sandstone), Facies 7 (bioturbated siltstone/sandstone), and Facies 8 (massive and brecciated siltstone). Deposition of the Bakken Formation in west-central Saskatchewan occurred under either open-marine or marginal-marine conditions. Facies association 1 (open-marine interval), which is made up of F1 through F4, is characterized by the distal Cruziana Ichnofacies. It was deposited within a wave-dominated shallow-marine depositional environment. Facies association 2 (marginal-marine interval), which is comprised of F5 through F8, shows scarce biogenic structures, most likely as a result of brackish-water conditions. Geological mapping (structure surface and isopach) of the facies and facies associations has aided in illustrating their lateral distribution. However, mapping of the overlying Mississippian carbonates and sub-Mesozoic unconformity shows that post-Mississippian erosion was a controlling factor in the distribution and preservation of Bakken Formation deposits, which creates uncertainty when interpreting geological maps and stratigraphic cross-sections. Although post-Mississippian erosion causes problems when reconstructing the depositional history and stratigraphic architecture of the Bakken Formation, it illustrates the importance of not performing stratigraphic studies within a vacuum, only focusing on the formation of interest. Rather, underlying and overlying units must be studied to see whether or not the unit of interest’s deposition and distribution has been affected by pre- and post-depositional events.

Laura Catalina Roman Garcia 29 September 2016 (has links)
The Jaibaras Basin, in northeastern Brasil, is a part of an Ediacaran to Cambrian rift system that branches under the Parnaiba sag basin, as evidenced by geophysical data. The basin is closely related to the Trasnbrasiliano Lineament fault system, represented in both its boundaries. The present study comprises a structural analysis of the volcano-sedimentary infill of the basin, aiming to the reconstruction of the paleostress field evolution responsible for the installation, deformation and inversion of the basin. This analysis was supported by sedimentological observations in the field and complemented with revision of seismic lines, gravimetric and magnetometric maps. The study aims to contribute to the discussion of the classification of the basin, a widely reviewed topic but few times from a sedimentary infill deformation perspective. The Jaibaras Basin initiation was probably related to the samestress field responsible for the intrusion of the Coreaú dyke swarm under a NNW-SSEoriented paleostress field. Subsequently the paleostress field rotated causing both the deformation and inversion of the rift. In the Ediacaran to Cambrian Pacujá Formation were identified several mechanically consistent structures with the NNW-SSE-oriented paleostress field: longitudinal NE-SW-oriented faults with right-lateral strike-slip reactivation with a normal component; transverse ENE-WSW-oriented faults with both syn- and- post- sedimentary activity and transfer NW-SE-oriented faults. Associated with the ENE-WSW-oriented syn-sedimentary faults normal fault-propagation-folds formed. Additionally transverse folds were formed related to the differential slip along the normal faults. The above-described structures determined the installation of an axial drainage system, a deltaic setting associated to rely ramps and transversal talus cones. In the contemporary Parapuí Formation, locally occurred the formation N-S-oriented calcite veins caused by an ENE-WSW-oriented extensional paleostress field. Then followed the formation of the E-W-oriented calcite veins tentatively correlatable to the syn-sedimentary faults in the Pacujá Formation, formed under an approximately N-S-oriented extension. In the Ordovician Aprazível Formation were identified clastic dykes, coherent with a NW-SEoriented extension. An E-W- to ENE-WSW-oriented paleostress field acting from the Late Ordovician generated transpressive structures along certain ENE-WSW-fault segments, related with the mild inversion of the basin. This event is represented by conic drag folds in the Pacujá Formation related to the inversion of normal faults, with a strike-slip component. In the Parapuí Formation, this event might have determined the formation of ENE-WSWoriented veins with right-lateral strike-slip component and sigmoidal en échelon veins with the same orientation. Both in the Pacujá and Parapuí formations were identified a final event represented by E-W-oriented open fractures (N-S-oriented extension). These are correlatable to the paleostress field obtained for the NE-SW-oriented clastic dikes registered in the Ipú Formation of the Serra Grande Group (Silurian) of the Parnaiba Basin, as well as the conjugate hybrid joint arrangements measured in the same formation. The importance of the activity of the transverse faults, caused by the strike-slip kinematics along de Transbrasiliano fault system leads to consider that were these kinematics the trigger of the subsidence in the rift and subsequently the deformation during the inversionprocess. Therefore, in relation to the classification of the basin it is here considered that the Jaibaras is more closely related to a pull-apart basin than a pure rift.

Forçages environnementaux et contrôles structuraux sur le régime thermique actuel du bassin de Paris : enjeux pour la compréhension du potentiel géothermique en Ile-de-France / Environmental forcings and structural controls on the present thermal regime of the Paris basin : issues for understanding the geothermal potential in Ile-de-France

Dentzer, Jacques 01 July 2016 (has links)
The acquisition of measurements of temperature and of thermal conductivity has enriched the understanding of the thermal regime of the Paris sedimentary basin and brought to light spatial and temporal thermal heterogeneities. In order to understand them better, these variations need to be integrated into a multidisciplinary vision of the basin by comparing data against models. The bibliographic review made it possible to integrate data of diverse sorts, to compare them using GIS and to investigate the knowledge base. This study has highlighted and reinterpreted the vertical variations of geothermal flux. Simulations carried out based on diffusive palaeoclimatic scenarios show that the system has retained a memory of the effects of palaeoclimates. Furthermore, for the first time, a systematic decline of the geothermal flux has been identified at the level of the main aquifer formations. Transitory thermo-hydraulic simulations of palaeoclimatic phenomena show the development in the sedimentary basin of cold and hot zones according to the areas of flow. An explanation of the temperature anomaly of over 20°C between the geothermal installations located to the north and south of Paris in the Bathonian is put forward. The models produced clearly show the potential contribution of fractured zones, as well as that of the faults, to the heterogeneity observed in the temperature field of the basin by allowing flow constrained by the regional charge gradient and unstable densities. This work has shown the link between the formations in the basin which are exploited for their resources or used as a storage medium.

Pegaz-fiornet, Sylvie 05 July 2011 (has links)
Hydrocarbon migration modeling in sedimentary basins aims to localize and to quantify hydrocarbon accumulations in geological formations in order to estimate their petroleum potential. In this thesis, we study “Darcy” migration models and also simplified migration models such as “ray-tracing” and “invasion percolation”; the purpose is to conduct a critical analysis and to offer improvements while providing a guide for a relevant use on case studies. We start by a review of migration mechanisms from the pore scale to the basin scale, then we present each model. In a following part, we propose two invasion percolation algorithms: the first one is suited to structured grids, the second one allows to take better account of unstructured grids. In a third part, we take an interest in the comparison between the different models and particularly between “Darcy” and “invasion percolation” approaches. First we devote our attention to numerical aspects supported by several use cases; then we realize a formal comparison by studying the asymptotic limit of the “Darcy” model large time solution. Afterwards, we present several applications including the study of a 3D real case in complex geometry. Finally, we conclude this work with two articles. The first one shows an evolution of “Darcy” models by using the method of local grid refinement with an illustration on a case study from northern Kuwait. The second one synthesizes the main results on “Darcy” and “invasion percolation” methods.

Contrôles sur la répartition des argiles organiques dans les bassins profonds : cas de l'Atlantique central au Crétacé / Controls on black repartition in deep ocean basins : case of the central Atlantic ocean during the Cretaceous

Mourlot, Yannick 16 March 2018 (has links)
The distribution heterogeneities of Cretaceous organic matter (OM) in the Central Atlantic Ocean are often related to geodynamic and paleoceanographic factors. However, the high proportion of terrestrial OM questions the hegemony of these mechanisms and shows the need to better constrain the sedimentary dynamics of organic-rich sediments. Using a source-to-sink approach coupling a geochemical provenance study with a basin study from subsurface data, we show a reorganization of drainage on the West African Craton and the Guyana Shield, characterized by a gradual extension of watersheds to the inner areas during the Upper Cretaceous. In the African deep basin, this process is coeval to a break of the turbiditic sedimentation from the Turonian and to its decrease in the Guyana-Suriname deep basin. In both cases, these changes were unfavorable to the enrichment of OM in the deep oceanic domain of the Central Atlantic.

GéoMicrobiologie de la méthanogenèse dans les schistes immatures du bassin de Paris / GeoMicrobiology of methanogenesis in immature organic-rich shales of the Paris Basin

Meslé, Margaux 29 January 2013 (has links)
The exploitation of natural unconventional resources in substitution for petroleum is one of the challenges of the 21st century. In situ microbial transformation of these resources in methane is one of the most promising pathway currently developed, although its application needs to be demonstrated. My objectives were to demonstrate the existence of a microbial conversion into methane of the organic matter (OM) of immature shales, and to quantify it in order to extrapolate the potential for methane production of the rocks at the sedimentary basin scale. A method of detection and monitoring of methanogenic consortia from paper shales in microcosms, combining quantitative PCR, GC-FID and Rock-Eval pyrolysis, was developed and validated. It was used to study the spatial distribution of methanogens in paper shales of the Paris Basin and to demonstrate the methanization of the OM of these rocks. The results show the conversion of the soluble fractions of the OM (bitumen) by methanogenic consortia isolated from shales, but also the transformation of a more complex fraction (kerogen). No strict correlation was established between lithology and presence of active methanogens, which makes the extrapolation of methane production to the basin scale more difficult. However, the localization of methanogens in both OM-rich and OM-poor zones constitute an advantage in the perspective of an economic exploitation of these resources. This work demonstrates a great potential for microbial methane production in the Paris Basin and paves the way to studies of economic feasibility and profitability on the scale of a production site.

One of the first tasks for extracting information from texts is the Named Entities Recognition (NER), which consists of identifying references to certain entities and finding out their classification. There are many NER domains, among them the most usual are medicine and biology. One of the challenging domains in the recognition of Named Entities (NE) is the Geology domain, which is an area lacking computational linguistic resources. This thesis proposes a method for the recognition of relevant NE in the field of Geology, specifically to the subarea of Brazilian Sedimentary Basin, in Portuguese texts. Generic and geological features were defined for the generation of a machine learning model. Among the automatic approaches to NE classification, the most prominent is the Conditional Ran- dom Fields (CRF) probabilistic model. CRF has been effectively used for word processing in natural language. To generate our model, we created GeoCorpus, a reference corpus for Geological NER, annotated by specialists. Experimental evaluations were performed to compare the proposed method with other classifiers. The best results were achieved by CRF, which shows 76,78% of Precision and 54,33% of F-Measure.

Crustal velocity structure of the Southern Nechako Basin, British Columbia, from wide-angle seismic traveltime inversion

Stephenson, Andrew 30 November 2010 (has links)
In the BATHOLITHSonland seismic project, a refraction - wide-angle reflection survey was shot in 2009 across the Coast Mountains and Interior Plateau of central British Columbia. Part of the seismic profile crossed the Nechako Basin, a Jurassic-Cretaceous basin with potential for hydrocarbons within sedimentary rocks that underlie widespread volcanics. Along this 205-km-long line segment, eight explosive shots averaging 750 kg were fired and recorded on 980 seismometers. Forward and inverse modelling of the traveltime data were conducted with two independent methods: ray-tracing based modelling of first and secondary arrivals, and a higher resolution wavefront-based first-arrival seismic tomography. Gravity modelling was utilized as a means of evaluating the density structure corresponding to the final velocity model. Material with velocities less than 5.0 km/s is interpreted as sedimentary rocks of the Nechako Basin, while velocities from 5.0-6.0 km/s may correspond to interlayered sediments and volcanics. The greatest thickness of sedimentary rocks in the basin is found in the central 110 km of the profile. Two sub-basins were identified in this region, with widths of 20-50 km and maximum sedimentary depths of 2.5 km and 3.3 km. Such features are well-defined in the velocity model, since resolution tests indicate that features with widths greater than ~13 km are reliable. Beneath the sedimentary rocks, seismic velocities increase more slowly with depth – from 6.0 km/s just below the basin to 6.3 km/s at ~17 km depth, and then to 6.8-7.0 km/s at the base of the crust. The Moho is interpreted at a depth of 33.5-35 km along the profile, and mantle velocities are high at 8.05-8.10 km/s.
