Motpolerna möts i resursfördelningssystemet : En jämförelse mellan tre olika skolor i Karlskoga

Wikström, Anette January 2012 (has links)

A cross-cultural comparative analysis of sex equality in the financial services sector in Turkey and Britain

Ozbilgin, Mustafa Fatih January 1999 (has links)
This thesis addresses issues of sex equality in the financial services sector in Britain and Turkey. incorporating a critique of the well-established theories of sex segregation in tht? labour force, the labour market and the organisation. The concepts of 'belonging' and 'otherness' are utilised to explain the problems of representation in the lahour force. Sex segregation in the lahour market is analysed using the occupational closure framework which elaborates gendered strategies of inclusion. exclusion. demarcation and dual closure. At the organisational level. the implications of different ideologies of sex equality will be studied. with a specific focus on transformational change ideology. The field study for this project was carried out with male and female stafT working in the financial sector in both countries. Two main types of data were collected: primwy data gathered through interviews and questionnaires. supplemented by field notes: and secondary data provided by the readily available published material such as international. national and organisational surveys, and company publications. The Turkish suryey generated 312 completed questionnaires and 21 taped interviews with staff employed in the sector. The British survey. which presented greater difficulties in secunng access. eventually yielded 50 completed questionnaires and 25 taped interviews. The analysis of the findings revealed certain cross-cultural differences in the gendered norms of "belonging' and 'otherness'. in the gendered strategies of occupational closure and in organisational approaches to redressing issues of sex equality. However. despite these differences. common patterns of disadvantage based on gender were apparent for staff working in the financial services sector in both societies.

The city as a rubberband : A study on how different actors in planning work counteract housing segregation

Johansson, Viktor, Wikström, Petter January 2017 (has links)

Generating place from space: Disruptions along a divisive urban corridor

January 2016 (has links)
Kansas City exists as a starkly segregated city in the 21st century. The Racial Dot Map of Kansas City, illustrated by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, highlights this contrast through the mapping of racial groups within the city. Upon first glance, it is noted that one street serves to divide the city racially, Troost Avenue. This fissure divides the city by race, economic status, school districts, crime, and many other demographic characteristics. Troost Ave originally signified a boundary of a thriving plantation and over time developed into Millionaire’s row, a street for wealthy families wanting to live outside the downtown area. The city’s expansion and the introduction of a streetcar line on Troost spurred commercial development along this corridor. Shortly after this period of time, developers began to focus on a City Beautiful movement west of Troost, designing large parkways and new housing for affluent, white neighborhoods. Due to a shift of focus to the area west of Troost, property values east of Troost began to drop. At this time, marginalized black communities were pushed out of the city’s West Bottoms due to effects of the second Industrial Revolution. The neighborhood east of Troost was a prime area for relocation due to it’s affordability, access to transportation, and proximity to urban life. The confluence of suburbanization, white flight, and the automobile led to the abandonment of the streetcar system and major shifts in Kansas City life. This echoed throughout the social, political, and economic fabric surrounding Troost Ave. This city wide transition created the racially concentrated areas of poverty east of Troost Ave and left a once thriving urban corridor to diminish, dividing and scarring the city. The thesis addresses the avenue at the scale of the city by pinpointing highly trafficked intersections and reclaiming unused space to generate place along Troost Avenue, creating a visually connected corridor. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

Universal Pre-K as a Vehicle for Reversing the Impact of Historic Racial Segregation in the United States

Bartley, Sarah 05 1900 (has links)
Not all children begin their educational journey on equal footing. The purpose of this study is to investigate how universal prekindergarten (UPK) can serve as a key to remedying issues surrounding educational inequity. In order to understand educational inequity, I dive into the history of neighborhood racial segregation in the United States, and how it led to our currently unjust system. Racial segregation, specifically city zoning laws, created racially separate neighborhoods that are still relatively homogenous to this day. In order to ascertain how UPK could combat these issues stemming from historic racial segregation, I evaluate programs in three states to highlight the approach to UPK that each has implemented: New York, Georgia, and Oklahoma. Program features in Oklahoma have produced high-quality standards and the program has reached a larger percentage of 4-year-olds. I discuss multiple dimensions of proposed education reform, particularly for students of color, including the culturally-situated nature of high-stakes testing and its inability to fully capture student and school progress. I propose a culturally empowering approach to UPK, situated within the Dallas community, as a solution to current educational inequity.

Black-White, Black-Nonblack, and White-Nonwhite Residential Segregation in U.S. Metropolitan and Nonmetropolitan Areas, 1990-2010

Pressgrove, Jed Raney 14 December 2013 (has links)
The goal of this study is to examine racial residential segregation in U.S. metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. The study uses 1990-2010 decennial census data to answer a broad theoretical question: is the historical black-white color line being replaced by a black-nonblack or white-nonwhite color line? The results show that blackwhite segregation is higher than black-nonblack and white-nonwhite segregation in metropolitan areas, nonmetropolitan areas, and the United States as a whole. A multivariate analysis reveals that population size tends to be associated with higher segregation in metropolitan areas and lower segregation in nonmetropolitan areas. As a control variable, diversity seems to play an important role in segregation by U.S. region. The study concludes that further research is needed to examine how the color line might change, especially in nonmetropolitan areas, which experienced rapid minority population growth during the 2000s.
