The following work proposed to study and show some neologisms presented in the communication system by a columnist of Folha de São Paulo newspaper, José Simão. First, we showed a theoretical explanation about lexical studies beyond its application and use in the written language, using the perspectives theoricals of Alves (1994), Barbosa (1981) and Biderman (2001), etc. We collected and organized the journalistic texts of the Ilustrada paper, from this columnist, in the period of January to December of 2003, totaling 289 sections of articles in the word format, ending in approximately 300 neologisms. This linguistic base was kept in a computer program called folio views® 4.1. giving the corpus of our survey, and then we took back and showed the context, the occurrence and we classificated the lexical items, as for example, the neologism lulanês, which is a syntactic neologism formed by suffixal derivation and makes part of the spoken language used by our actual republic president of Brazil, Luis Inácio da Silva. These new lexical creations were classificated in semantic fields like: television, politics, and everyday. We proposed, moreover, a presentation by graphics of the neologics resources more used by José Simão which were more used to verify the vivacity of the neological processes that he presented in his texts.

They presented themselves as a team specialized in support and consultancy on the field of mathematics education, for schools, government departments and other similar institutions. In this dissertation we conceptualize ‘identity’ as processes of meaning production or inventions, understood as the opposite of ‘origin’, of ‘expressions of the real’ for individual or collective actors, or things, that are constituted through discourses on the basis of a cultural attribute; or as a set of inter-related cultural attributes that prevail over other sources of meaning. Based on such des-conception of ‘identity’, throughout the development of this study we have constituted and presented different meaning production processes for the CEM, that is, different identities for the group. In order to do so, we produced and analyzed fifteen testimonials, ten of which are textual renderings of (faceto- face) interviews with CEM members; from these ‘fragments’ were produced. Apart from that, and aiming at a second objective of the study, we attempted to constitute distinct theorizations of the identity of the CEM, in order to present distinct meaning production processes for the group, from viewpoints external to it. Those theorizations are presented on five of the last six fragments, and are supported on René Descartes (fragment XI), Émile Durkheim, George Herbert Mead, Peter Bergman & Thomas Luckman and, particularly, Norbert Elias (fragment XII), Etienne Wenger (fragment XIII) and Michel Foucault (fragment XIV). One of the suggestions produced in this study is that none of the particular identity fragments... (Complete abstract click eletronic address below) / Doutor

Žargonybių kilmės, raidos ir vartojimo polinkiai / The peculiarities of origin, dvelopment and use of slang words and expressions

Vėta, Nerijus 27 June 2006 (has links)
The subject of the Master’s thesis is the origin, development and use of slang words which name persons and money. The methods applied in the thesis are as follows: explanatory, etymological, and systematic. In the thesis it is assumed that slang is a language sub-system comprising words and expressions which are not normative or emotionally-neutral, and which often have a negative connotation. These words and expressions have some formation-related, semantic and stylistic peculiarities; they are used by specific social groups and demonstrate the users’ belonging to a certain group. The problems of origin, development and use of slang words have not been studied in depth by Lithuanian linguists. This is due both to historical circumstances and to the various attitudes to this peripheral sphere of language (which most of the time is viewed negatively and called language “waste”). By considering slang words and expressions as a distorted layer not subject to general language norms, we set the goal to define whether it is possible to systemise it. Taking into consideration the origin, slang words are grouped into the following two categories: words of Lithuanian and non-Lithuanian origin. Characteristic features of slang words of Lithuanian origin are as follows: variety of meaning, acquisition of unusual meanings, formation of new words by consonance or certain allusions, as well as vulgar and idiomatic phrases. Most slavisms came from the same language layers (drug-addicts... [to full text]

The purpose of this research is produce a 'Read' of the teacher-student interaction from speech of students of mathematics teacher education courses. This 'Read' aims constitute legitimacy that make possible the researcher speak about influence of this interaction in the teaching practice of those students. To achieve this goal it was mobilized the theoretical foundations of the Model of Semantic Fields, the writing in narrative and the fiction. Presenting a story of your history in the master degree, the researcher weaves considerations about: the teacher-student interaction as a social construction; research like a 'descentramento' pratice (critical awareness about myself and my certainties); and the possibilities of fiction like a perspective of teorization in Mathematics Education.

This study aimed at producing a reading of the production of mathematical and non-mathematical meanings for dimension, based on the Model of Semantic Fields (MSF), and consists of three episodes: (a) an analysis of everyday phrases that contain the word dimension, using both the MSF (Lins, 1997, 1999) and the notion of Language Games (Wittgenstein, 1985); (b) an analysis of how dimension appears within the mathematician's mathematics, through three definitions for it, and also re-examining how students of a linear algebra course dealt with it; and, (c) a historical study of the constitution of a specific area of mathematics, examining what historians say about the notion of dimension and the changes meanings went through. We think those episodes offer support for a dialogue with mathematics teachers (pre- and inservice) as to make possible to discuss those modes of meaning production, particularly the difference between everyday and mathematical discourses, providing an experience of better understanding meaning production processes.

Automatizované metody popisu struktury odborného textu a vztah některých prvků ke kvalitě textu / Automated methods of textual content analysis and description of text structures

Chýla, Roman January 2012 (has links)
Universal Semantic Language (USL) is a semi-formalized approach for the description of knowledge (a knowledge representation tool). The idea of USL was introduced by Vladimir Smetacek in the system called SEMAN which was used for keyword extraction tasks in the former Information centre of the Czechoslovak Republic. However due to the dissolution of the centre in early 90's, the system has been lost. This thesis reintroduces the idea of USL in a new context of quantitative content analysis. First we introduce the historical background and the problems of semantics and knowledge representation, semes, semantic fields, semantic primes and universals. The basic methodology of content analysis studies is illustrated on the example of three content analysis tools and we describe the architecture of a new system. The application was built specifically for USL discovery but it can work also in the context of classical content analysis. It contains Natural Language Processing (NLP) components and employs the algorithm for collocation discovery adapted for the case of cooccurences search between semantic annotations. The software is evaluated by comparing its pattern matching mechanism against another existing and established extractor. The semantic translation mechanism is evaluated in the task of...

Vicious or Misunderstood? : A Pragmatic Analysis of YouTube Comments

Mortukane, Kamene January 2024 (has links)
Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is a relatively new field made even more difficult to investigate by the continuous progress and changes of the digital world. There is a multitude of research on CMC from a linguistic perspective; however, the vastness of the online world makes it difficult to determine to what extent it is a welcoming or hostile environment. The existing studies of polite and impolite language use in CMC provide some insight into the type of environment found online though there is a notable lack of information regarding the overall proportionality of impolite language use, specifically violent and aggressive language use. This study aims to explore to what extent violent and aggressive language use is present in user generated comments found on the social media platform YouTube by investigating the semantic fields of violence and aggression. It is a corpus-based study of the topmost comments collected from the most popular videos in the year 2023 in the YouTube category of Reviews. The quantitative content analysis reveals that both violent and aggressive language use is present in the comments though infrequently with violent language use having a normalized frequency of 2.1 times per thousand words and aggressive language use 2.6 times per thousand words. The qualitative pragmatic analysis of the observed instances shows that only one instance carries out the illocutionary act of violence in addition to the locutionary act. Based on these findings it appears violent and aggressive language use is relatively infrequent concerning more neutral topics and in most cases the communicators do not have violent or aggressive intent in their messages.

Fondation constitutive du milieu intermédiaire / The « Intermediary Mental Space » As a New Way for Language Study

Faure, Jean-Philippe 11 May 2012 (has links)
This work mainly deals with a statement of Ferdinand de Saussure, describing language as « milieu intermédiaire » (which might be named in english : « intermediary mental space », in accordance to Fauconnier’s « mental space ») ; Saussure’s statement was only in spoken form, but fortunately transcribed by listeners of his lectures in Geneva. Freely inspired from Nietzsche‘s Genealogy of morals, this study means to enquire into the main XXth century linguistic schools (neo-grammarians, structuralism, generative grammar, fonctionalism, cognitive sciences as with Varela and Rosch), which should make it possible to elaborate a new orientation of this science (justifying the claim of a « fondation constitutive »). This research aims at thoroughly recasting the method through the screen of phenomenology (including recourse to the « Gestalt », of the same-named psychology). The « intermediary mental space » is to be seen as an eq! uivalent of the semantic fields, which had led me to survey – as an important part of my work - the studies of the precursors in this direction, Jost Trier and Els Oksaar, but through a critical approach of their work.
