Disney och den postfeministiska prinsessan : En semiotisk undersökning av kvinnliga Disney-protagonister

Berggren, Ronja, Mathilda, Lundqvist January 2018 (has links)
The Walt Disney Company has been producing feature films for almost a decade, allowing children as well as grown ups to enter their world of fairytales. Along the years there have been different ways to portray the characters, this can be seen in results from previous research. The purpose with our essay is to examine five female main characters in modern princess-movies from Disney; The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave, Frozen and finally Moana. With a base in the ideas of postfeminism, we wanted to investigate how the female characters were portrayed in terms of physical appearance, personality and stereotypical femininity. We made a semiotic analysis to discern signs in respective movie, we used Roland Barthes’s theory consisting of the idea of denotation, connotation and myths. Our analysis lead us to the conclusion that several changes can be seen. Instead of portraying female characters as innocent, love-seeking and in the need of rescue, the modern princesses are physically strong, determined and adventurous. The viewers are also being introduced to new kinds of relationships that differs from the previous heterosexual standards. Even though some gender roles and intersectional standards were remained visible, we found new stereotypical ways of portraying women in Disney.

Dětští protagonisté v tetralogii "Le cycle de l'invisible" Erika-Emmanuela Schmitta / Young Protagonists in Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt´s Tetralogy "Le cycle de l' invisible"

BAČOVSKÁ, Jana January 2011 (has links)
The aim of my thesis is a complete analysis of child characters in Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt´s tetralogy Le cycle de l´invisible. The child characters are the main protagonists of all the cycle. Therefore they the have been given the main focus in my work. In the theoretical part of my work I'm introducing the basis of the analysis of the characters in general. A treatise of the character with it´s different aspects and functions in a literary text is a part of the theoretical basis. In the subsequent analysis of individual texts I have been analyzing child characters appearing in the cycle. I have been dealing with their characteristics, their relation to the storyline and to the narrative structure of the text, to the other characters, especially adults. During my work I have been trying to reach a more general characteristic of Schmitt´s child fables and also to answer the question why the author chose children as his prose protagonists.

Christiane Paula Godinho Santarelli 24 April 2009 (has links)
Graphic image analysis processes: a comparative study of fashion advertising. The main objective of this survey is to undertake comparative analyses of domestic and international fashion2 ads aiming to understand both their persuasive processes and their seduction and manipulation resources. To achieve this objective, we will rescue a few of the main image analysis proposals in advertising in print and contribute with a suggestion for a new model that ranges from image perception to the readers expected course action, including considerations on the campaign in which the ad under analysis is inserted and its context. To demonstrate the proposed study model, we will analyze three jeanswear article ads.

Evaluating the teaching and learning of fractions through modelling in Brunei : measurement and semiotic analyses

Haji Harun, Hajah Zurina January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is submitted to the University of Manchester for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). This study developed an experimental small group teaching method in the Realistic Mathematics Education tradition for teaching fractions using models and contexts to year 7 children in Brunei (N=89) whose effectiveness was evaluated using a treatment-control design: the E1 group was given the experimental lessons, the E2 group who was given “normal” lessons taught by the experimenter, and a whole class (E3) group which acted as the control group. The experimental teaching was video recorded and subject to semiotic analysis, aiming to describe the objectifications that realized ‘learning of fractions’ by the groups. The research addresses two research questions:1. How effective was the experimental teaching in helping learners make sense of fractions, with respect to equivalence of fractions and flexibility of unitizing?2. What were the semiotic learning and teaching processes in the experimental group of the RME-like lessons? This study used a mixed method approach with a quasi-experimental design (QED) for the quantitative side, and a semiotic analysis for the qualitative side. Quantitatively, the experimental teachings proved to be relatively effective with an effect size of 0.6 from the pre- to the delayed post-teaching test, compared to the E2 and the control groups. The basic findings pertaining to the semiotic analyses were:a. The mediation of the production of fractions in terms of length, from the production of fractions in terms of the number of parts which led to equivalence of fractions;b. The use of language and gesture help to objectify the equivalence of fractions and the flexibility of unitizing–in some case it involved gesturing to the self;c. The role of the Hour-Foot clock (HFC) as a model in a realistic context; andd. The complexity of the required chains of objectifications reflects the difficulties of the topic.

The first part of the book focusses on the theoretical and contextual basis to comprehend the participant’s interaction with fanfictions. Vizualita performativity genderu ve filmech Xaviera Dolana / Visuality of gender performativity in the films of Xavier Dolan

Vlach, Martin January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to explore the way how the gender performativity is portrayed in Xavier Dolan's films. The theoretical part of the thesis first deals with the definition and theoretical grounding of gender performativity from the perspective of several authors, mainly Judith Butler. This part of the thesis will detailly introduce the concepts of gender performativity, which will be necessary for the analysis of the studied films. The theoretical part also presents the queer theory and the related chapter devoted to queer film, which would also include Dolan's work. Lastly, this part also includes a chapter devoted to the concept of mise-en-scène. The methodological part introduces the method of semiotic analysis and introduces the synopsis of the studied films. The analytical part of the work presents its own semiotic analysis of the examined films. The aim of the analytical part is to find out how Dolan works with gender performativity in his films and how it is visually portrayed.
