Productive wandering: Re-envisioning living facilities for Alzheimer's patientsJanuary 2017 (has links)
Every 66 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. Because of the baby boomer generation, this number will continue to rise significantly in the coming years (2016 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures). As a result, it is essential to consider memory impaired individuals when creating space; specifically, those spaces in which patients receive long term care. Though there are claims that a wide range of options exist for memory impaired assisted living, types of care can be easily sorted into three groups: home care, institution care, or for few select individuals, care in specialized communities known as dementia villages. While there is a spectrum of care for each of these categories, more often than not, the main stream option is a typical nursing home or assisted-living facility. The direct influence of traditional hospital typologies is evident in the layout of the building, and is in part due to the use of government funding (Day). Specialized dementia and Alzheimer’s care does exist in some cities, though generally memory units differ in patient demographic and programing, and not in the way that spaces are formed. The idea of a dementia village, an isolated community that encompasses all aspects of living and social life, has proved successful in increasing patient autonomy; however, such facilities often exist outside of the urban realm and are built on the foundation of imitation and replication. Through historical analysis of medical building typologies and formal investigation of spatial relationships, this thesis aims to explore the opportunities within built space that allow aging and memory-loss patients to feel comfort. By flipping the relationship between the private and public realms of the building, it is possible to generate increased social interaction, improving the overall quality of life of the patients. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att använda kvalitetsregistret Senior Alert : En kvalitativ intervjustudie / Nurses' experiences of using the Quality Register Senior Alert : A qualitative interview studySkoglund, Josefine, Johansson, Sara January 2020 (has links)

Student Experiences and Expectations Related to the Vertical Transfer Process From Two Feeder Community Colleges of a Senior InstitutionMiller, Brandon B. A. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences and expectations of community college students attending Temple College and Central Texas College regarding what they may expect as part of the vertical transfer process in order to improve the likelihood of their persistence to graduation at Texas A&M University-Central Texas (TAMUCT). The target population was approximately 700 students enrolled in two feeder Texas community colleges who had expressed intent to transfer to TAMUCT. The response rate was 19%, and 136 useable surveys were used for analysis. The sample was 74% female, 45% White with the majority minority. To assess the relationships between community college experiences and transfer expectation variables, correlations and logistic regression were used. No linear relationships were found regarding gender, age, ethnicity, highest level of parents' education, the aspirational variables of highest academic degree intend to obtain at any college or university and at TAMUCT, and the feeder community college attended and the two scales. A statistically significant relationship was found between parental income level and reported community college experiences (F(4, 79) = 2.612, p = .042) and vertical transfer expectations (F(4, 52) = 3.318, p = .017). Community college students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds may utilize the community college to upper-level institution vertical transfer pathway as a way to obtain an affordable baccalaureate degree. Community colleges and university administrators need to continue working together to establish unique and creative ways to create seamless transitions for vertical transfer students utilizing the community college to upper-level institution pathway to degree completion.

Elderly Living in Sweden : Present solutions and future trendsEdström, Annika, Gustafsson, Madelene January 2011 (has links)
The amount of people retiring in Sweden is increasing and will continue to do so in the future. Politicians have recognized a challenge in this demographic development and it is important that they act in time and in a way that satisfies the need. The disposable income for people above the age of 65 has increased the past years and continues to increase according to the Swedish Statistics forecast, this indicates that the retired people will have more money to spend on housing in the future. There are different types of living for elderly in Sweden; staying at home, senior living, secure living and nursing homes and an interesting question is if these will be adoptable in the future. New solutions, which address the demands for higher standards, will ease the social and security aspects for the residents as well as improve the work environment for the employees in the home care service business. These different solutions are not yet implemented in a large scale, but development show that they are influencing the future direction of building senior residencies. Retired couples who get ill at different times might not get to live together or near each other when they require different levels of assistance to manage daily life. Moving away from a familiar area, family and friends can be stressful. By placing different types of elderly living close to each other is a solution that might help decrease that stress. There are some solutions like this already on the market today and it is a solution worth investigating more. We believe that the availability of new and refurbished buildings needs to be more focused on easing the living for elderly people and may be achieved by implementing a certification system. Implementation and use of this certification system may create goodwill for investors and therefore force construction companies to build according to it. However a certification has to be requested by residents, municipalities and tenants, to be considered by the investors.
