[pt] A percepção de risco na compra online é tida como um fator importante que restringe a velocidade de expansão do comércio eletrônico. A reserva de um hotel, em si já percebida como arriscada pela dominância intangível do serviço, tem sido apontada como gerando ainda mais insegurança quando realizada pelo site próprio do hotel. Características de personalidade, como a busca de sensações, podem levar alguns consumidores a evitar um canal de marketing que traga percepção de maior risco. Este estudo procurou compreender o papel da busca de sensações na escolha, pelos consumidores, do canal para fazer a reserva de um hotel. Para isso, conduziu-se um survey em uma amostra de 3.600 pessoas que fizeram reserva em hotéis do Rio de Janeiro, entre setembro de 2009 e fevereiro de 2010. Metade da amostra fez a reserva através do site próprio do hotel, enquanto que a outra metade utilizou outros canais para efetivar a reserva (telefone, agências e operadores de turismo, ou serviços GDS, como Expedia). Os resultados identificam as dimensões do risco percebido relevantes nesta situação de compra, bem como as diferenças de escolha entre consumidores em função do nível (alto ou baixo) de seu nível de busca de sensações. / [en] The risk perception in buying online is seen as an important factor that restricts the speed of electronic commerce expansion. The hotel booking, as itself, is perceived as risky by the intangible dominance of service, it has been identified as generating further uncertainty when performed by the hotel s own website. Personality traits such as sensation seeking, may lead some consumers to avoid a marketing channel that brings increased perceived risk. This study sought to understand the role of sensation seeking in the choice, by the channel consumers, to book a hotel. For this, we conducted a survey in a sample of 3,600 people who have booked hotels in Rio de Janeiro, between September 2009 and February 2010. Half of the sample made a booking through the hotel s own site, while the other half used other channels to book it (telephone, agencies and tour operators, GDS or services such as Expedia). The results identify which perceived risk dimensions are relevant in this buying situation, as well as differences in the choice among consumers according to the level (high or low) level of sensation seeking.

Impulsividade, busca de sensações e comportamento de risco no trânsito : um estudo comparativo entre condutores infratores e não infratores

Introdução: Estima-se que os comportamentos de risco no trânsito, como erros e violações, sejam responsáveis por aproximadamente 90% dos acidentes automobilísticos. Dentre as principais variáveis preditoras de comportamento de risco no trânsito estão os traços de personalidade do condutor. A associação positiva entre impulsividade, busca de sensações e comportamentos de risco no trânsito já é bem documentada na literatura. No entanto, estudos que explorem essas associações entre condutores infratores versus não infratores são escassos, principalmente no Brasil. Objetivo: Explorar as associações entre impulsividade, busca de sensações e comportamentos de risco no trânsito em uma amostra de condutores infratores versus não infratores da cidade de Porto Alegre. Método: A amostra foi composta por 158 condutores infratores que tiveram o direito de dirigir suspenso nos últimos 12 meses por acúmulo de pontos (68,4%) ou tipo de infração específica (31,6%), selecionados no Departamento Estadual de Trânsito do Rio Grande do Sul (79,7% homens) e 181 não infratores (76,2% homens) captados em três Centros de Formação de Condutores e em dois parques públicos locais. As medidas utilizadas foram: a Escala de Impulsividade de Barrat (BIS-11), o Inventário de Busca de Sensações de Arnett (AISS) e um questionário padronizado para coleta de informações demográficas e de comportamentos de risco no trânsito. As variáveis foram analisadas através de regressão logística de acordo com um modelo hierarquizado. O nível de significância adotado foi 5%. Resultados: Maior impulsividade (OR = 4,8, IC 95%: 2,68-8,6), anos de estudo (OR=0,91, IC 95%: 0,85-0,97); dirigir com maior frequência (OR = 4,01, IC 95%: 2,05-7,83), assumir infrações de outro condutor (OR = 2,91, IC 95%: 1,63-5,19), solicitar que outro condutor assumisse suas infrações (OR = 6,74, IC 95%: 2,39-19,25), envolvimento em acidentes de trânsito com vítima (OR = 2,73, IC 95%: 1,24-6,01) e consumir bebida alcoólica nos últimos 12 meses (beber não binge = OR 0,77, IC 95%: 0,38-1,55; binge drinking = OR 1,97, IC 95%: 0,87-4,47) foram significativa e independentemente associados à suspensão do direito de dirigir. Não foi constatada associação entre busca de sensações e ter o direito de dirigir suspenso. Conclusão: Os achados sugerem que a impulsividade, alguns comportamentos associados a risco – tais como envolvimento em acidentes graves, beber bebida alcoólica nos últimos 12 meses, assumir infrações de outro condutor, solicitar que outro condutor assumisse suas infrações - e a frequência com que o condutor dirige foram preditores para o cometimento de mais infrações; também se evidenciou que possuir mais anos de estudo representou um fator de proteção à direção segura. Nesse sentido, nossos resultados demonstram a natureza complexa e multideterminada do fenômeno. However, studies that explore these associations among offender drivers and non-offender drivers are scarce, especially in Brazil. Objective: To explore the association between impulsivity, sensation seeking and risk behavior in traffic in a sample of offender drivers versus non-offender drivers in the city of Porto Alegre. Method: The sample comprised 158 offender drivers whose right to drive had been suspended over the past 12 months due to an accumulation of points (68.4%) or a specific violation (31.6%), selected at the Rio Grande do Sul State Traffic Department (79.7% men) and 181 non-offender drivers (76.2% men) from three Driving Schools and in two local parks. Measures used were: the Barrat Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), the Arnett Inventory of Sensation Seeking (AISS) and a standardized questionnaire for the collection of information of demographics and risk behavior in traffic. The variables were analyzed through logistic regression according to a hierarchical model. The adopted level of significance was 5%. Results: More impulsiveness (OR = 4.8, IC 95%: 2.68-8.6), years in school (OR=0.91, IC 95%: 0.85-0.97); frequent driving (OR = 4.01, IC 95%: 2.05-7.83), take on other driver’s violations (OR = 2.91, IC 95%: 1.63-5.19), request that other driver’s take on one’s violations (OR = 6.74, IC 95%: 2.39-19.25), involvement in traffic accidents with a victim (OR = 2.73, IC 95%: 1.24-6.01) and drinking alcoholic beverages during the last 12 months (non-binge drinking = OR 0.77, IC 95%: 0.38-1.55; binge drinking = OR 1.97, IC 95%: 0.87-4.47) were significantly and independently associated with the suspension of driving privileges. We verified no association between sensation seeking and the suspension of driving privileges. Conclusion: The findings suggest that impulsivity and behaviors associated with risk – such as involvement in serious accidents, drinking alcoholic beverages within the last 12 months, taking on violations of other drivers, requesting that other drivers take on his/her violations - and the frequency of driving were indicative of committing additional violations; it was also shown that more years of study represented a factor favoring safe driving. In this sense, our results show the complex and multidetermined nature of the phenomenon. It is hoped that this pioneering study in Brazil contributes to the identification of potential risk factors and those associated with committing violations, as well as contributing to the discussion of measures for evaluation, rehabilitation and monitoring of traffic.

Moderation of Sensation Seeking Effects on Adolescent Substance Use

abstract: Adolescent substance use carries a considerable public health burden, and early initiation into use is especially problematic. Research has shown that sensation seeking traits increase risk for substance use experimentation, but less is known about individual and contextual factors that can potentially protect against this risk. This study utilized a longitudinal sub sample of youth (N=567) from a larger study of familial alcoholism to examine sensation seeking in early adolescence (ages 10-15) and its relations to later substance use experimentation. Hypotheses tested whether individual executive control, parenting consistency, neighborhood disadvantage, and neighborhood ethnic concentration moderated sensation seeking’s effects on substance use experimentation using multilevel zero-inflated Poisson modeling. Across models, higher levels of sensation seeking were predictive of a higher likelihood of having initiated substance use, but sensation seeking was not significantly related to the number of different substance use classes tried. Only neighborhood disadvantage emerged as a significant moderator of the path from sensation seeking to substance use initiation. The strength of sensation seeking effects on substance use initiation increased as neighborhood disadvantage decreased below average levels, with the most advantaged neighborhoods exhibiting the strongest link between sensation seeking and substance use. There was also a trend towards the most disadvantaged neighborhoods exhibiting increased sensation seeking effects on substance use initiation. Alcohol Expectancies versus Subjective Response as Mediators of Disposition in the Acquired Preparedness Model

abstract: Levels of heavy episodic drinking peak during emerging adulthood and contribute to the experience of negative consequences. Previous research has identified a number of trait-like personality characteristics that are associated with drinking. Studies of the Acquired Preparedness Model have supported positive expectancies, and to a lesser extent negative expectancies, as mediators of the relation between trait-like characteristics and alcohol outcomes. However, expectancies measured via self-report may reflect differences in learned expectancies in spite of similar alcohol-related responses, or they may reflect true individual differences in subjective responses to alcohol. The current study addressed this gap in the literature by assessing the relative roles of expectancies and subjective response as mediators within the APM in a sample of 236 emerging adults (74.7% male) participating in a placebo-controlled alcohol challenge study. The study tested four mediation models collapsed across beverage condition as well as eight separate mediation models with four models (2 beverage by 2 expectancy/subjective response) for each outcome (alcohol use and alcohol-related problems). Consistent with previous studies, SS was positively associated with alcohol outcomes in models collapsed across beverage condition. SS was also associated with positive subjective response in collapsed models and in the alcohol models. The hypothesized negative relation between SS and sedation was not significant. In contrast to previous studies, neither stimulation nor sedation predicted either weekly drinking or alcohol-related problems. While stimulation and alcohol use appeared to have a positive and significant association, this relation did not hold when controlling for SS, suggesting that SS and stimulation account for shared variability in drinking behavior. Failure to find this association in the placebo group suggests that, while explicit positive expectancies are related to alcohol use after controlling for levels of sensation seeking, implicit expectancies (at least as assessed by a placebo manipulation) are not. That the relation between SS and stimulation held only in the alcohol condition in analyses separate by beverage condition indicates that sensation seeking is a significant predictor of positive subjective response to alcohol (stimulation), potentially above and beyond expectancies. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Psychology 2012

Risktagande inom räddningstjänsten

Räddningstjänsten är ett yrke där risktagande är en del av vardagen för personalen, det finns många olika faktorer som påverkar hur och varför ett beslut tas före och under en räddningsinsats. Denna studie syftar till att undersöka skillnader i risktagande mellan befattningar inom räddningstjänsten, baserat på faktorer som sensationssökning och synen på den egna kontrollen av handlingar och dess konsekvenser. Metoden som användes var en webenkät baserad på två validerade tester för att undersöka dessa faktorer; Sensation Seeking Scale samt Locus of Control-test. Sammanlagt deltog 17 stycken respondenter och alla var män, befattningarna varierade mellan brandman, styrkeledare, insatsledare, ställföreträdande räddningschef samt räddningschef. Resultatet visade en signifikant skillnad i sensationssökning mellan befattningarna där de lägre befattningarna hade störst sensationssökning. Ingen signifikant skillnad i Locus of Control-testet mellan befattningarna fanns. Slutsatsen utifrån resultatet är att lägre befattningar inom räddningstjänsten söker sensation i större utsträckning än högre befattningar och kan sägas ha en annan syn på risker och risktagande. Till exempel är en större tolerans för risker, en mindre erfarenhet av yrket och dess riskfyllda situationer samt en större acceptans för konsekvenser av ett risktagande, olika karaktärsdrag för vad en större sensationssökning innebär.

Magister Scientiae (Occupational Therapy) - MSc(OT) / School dropout particularly amongst youth living in impoverished areas is a major concern in South Africa because of limited opportunities and resources. Therefore, these youth may experience leisure boredom, engage in sensation seeking and other risky behaviours, such as substance use, which influences their health and wellbeing. However, little research has explored youth who have dropped out of school with a specific focus on their free time experience and use of substances. Aim: The aim of the study was to explore and describe free time experience and substance use amongst youth who have dropped out of school in Cape Town. Methods: A sequential explanatory mixed methods study with two phases including quantitative (Phase one) and qualitative (Phase two) was conducted. In Phase one, data from an existing dataset was analysed. The data were from 970 youth who had dropped out of school in Cape Town who had completed the HealthWise Risk Behaviour Survey in 2016. Descriptive statistics regarding the use of free time and the prevalence of substance use were computed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. In Phase two, thirty-two participants were selected using convenience sampling who took part in one of four focus group discussions to explore in-depth the results computed in Phase one of the study. Steps were taken to enhance the validity, reliability and trustworthiness of the data.

Performance and Subjective Effects of Diazepam and D-Amphetamine in High and Low Sensation Seekers

Although sensation-seeking status is associated with age of initiation and amount of drug use among adolescents, and sensitivity to the behavioral and reinforcing effects of drugs among young adults, it is unclear whether sensation-seeking status among adolescents is predictive of sensitivity to the pharmacological effects of drugs (i.e. abuse potential) as adults. This study examined the acute behavioral effects of oral diazepam and d-amphetamine in young adults, ages 18-21 years, who had consistently scored in the highest or lowest third of their grade-based cohort on a modified Sensation Seeking Scale that was completed annually between ages 10 and 14 years. Healthy participants completed 16 7.5-h test days, with test days separated by a minimum of 48 h. Each day, assessments consisting of computer task performance, verbal report of drug effects, and cardiovascular measures were completed 0, 50, 110, 170, 230, and 290 min after drug administration. Placebo and three active doses of diazepam and d-amphetamine (2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 mg/70 kg) were tested under double-blind conditions according to a randomized-block design. Typical stimulant and sedative effects were obtained with d-amphetamine and diazepam, respectively. Drug effects varied as a function of sensation-seeking status, with magnitude of effects on cardiovascular function, task performance, and report of positive drug effects being greater among high sensation seekers, and report of negative drug effects being greater among low sensation seekers. Adolescents who report high levels of sensation seeking on a consistent basis are more sensitive to pharmacological effects of stimulant and sedative drugs that are associated with abuse potential as young adults.
