Openness to Experience: A Predictor of Technology Use at Any Age?

Ojalvo, Olivia 01 January 2018 (has links)
Technology is an integral part of both modern culture and day-to-day communication. Older adults' relationships with technology are completely different than younger adults' because of the way they have learned to incorporate it into their lives. Past research has shown that certain personality traits can predict technology use in younger adults. The current research hopes to take that finding and see if it applies to older adults, too. Four hypotheses were generated. Participants took a survey that consisted of five different scales and measures. Participants also were asked to answer demographic questions. Independent-sample t-tests and bivariate correlations were run on the data. Results showed that general technology use was not significantly correlated to a participant's age. There were significant correlations between the two age groups and psychological well-being, feelings of attachment to peers, technology use subscales and sensation seeking subscales. Future studies should examine the possible relationship of technology use subscales amongst the older population and their attitudes towards technology.

Adolescent Psychopathy in an Adjudicated Male Population: The Role of Sensation Seeking, Impulsivity, and Externalizing Disorders

Vitacco, Michael J. 08 1900 (has links)
Psychopathy, as conceptualized by Cleckley (1941), describes a constellation of psychological and behavioral correlates including superficial charm, untruthfulness, lack of remorse or shame, poor judgment, and failure to learn from experience. Based on Cleckley's initial work, Hare (1991) developed a two-factor model of psychopathy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles that sensation seeking, impulsivity, ADHD, conduct disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder have on adolescents classified as psychopaths. The participants consisted of 79 adjudicated male adolescents in a maximum-security facility. As hypothesized, adolescent male psychopaths had higher levels of sensation seeking, impulsivity, conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. A discriminant function analysis found that sensation seeking, impulsivity, ADHD, Conduct Disorder, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder was moderately useful in classifying adolescent psychopathy. The results suggest that behavioral dysregulation is an important aspect of adolescent psychopathy. The relationship of these data to theories of adolescent psychopathy is discussed.

Dimensions and Validation of Perceived Message Sensation Value Scale for Print Messages

Grant, Lisanne F. M. 01 January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this research project was to develop a reliable and valid scale to assess the perceived message sensation value (PMSV) of print messages. The goal of this project was accomplished by conducting two studies. Study one involved collecting 397 undergraduate students’ responses to one high and one low sensation value anti-smoking message, while for study two, 284 undergraduate students’ responses to one high and one low sensation value anti-crystal meth message were collected. The results of the studies highlighted that the PMSV of a print message can be assessed using three dimensions (emotional arousal, novelty, and dramatic impact) and 12 items. Additionally, the newly developed PMSV scale for print messages remained stable across sensation-seeking levels and two different sets of anti-drug messages. Analysis of the data collected also provided support for the convergent, divergent, and predictive validity of the PMSV scale for print messages. Furthermore, from the data it can be inferred that PMSV is an important element that contributes to perceived message effectiveness and attitude towards the ad. The findings associated with this research project also suggest that both high and low sensation seekers preferred high over low sensation value print messages. Lastly, the implications of the PMSV scale for print messages were addressed.

Gender as moderator of the relationship between impulsivity and driving after cannabis use

Wang, Yifan 05 1900 (has links)
Road traffic crashes are a serious public health problem worldwide, and human factors are the most prominent factor of accidents, affecting mostly the young adults. Past studies found that both gender and personality traits such as impulsivity are associated with risky driving, however, the interaction of these predictors is rarely addressed in the literature. To bridge the gap, the present study explores how a specific facet of impulsivity interacts with our hypothesized moderator, gender identification, leads to drug driving using a moderator analysis. We recruited participants from 17 to 35 years old possessing a valid drivers' licence via Facebook advertising. They were invited to complete a questionnaire on their socio-demographic characteristics, cannabis consumption habits and impulsivity scores. A moderator analysis is conducted to disentangle the relationship between sensation seeking, gender and driving after cannabis consumption using SPSS Process. The proposed model contains sensation seeking as an exogenous variable directly associated with driving after cannabis use, and this relationship is moderated by gender identification. The current study provides evidence that sensation seeking and gender identification are not only associated with DACU but also interact to affect driving behaviour. Implications of the study are discussed.

Sensation seeking and the perception and reaction to emotional facial expressions

Talalaievska, Mariia 12 1900 (has links)
The present master’s thesis focuses on the potential relation between sensation seeking and the processing of emotional facial expressions, specifically the perception (perceived intensity and perceived valence) and reaction (arousal) to emotional facial expressions in others. We investigate whether individual differences in sensation seeking are related to the variations in perception and reactions to positive, negative, and neutral facial emotions in others. We also investigate if differences in perception have a role to play in the relationship between the self-reported arousal response and sensation seeking. A sample of young adults (N=77) completed the Sensation Seeking Scale Form V (SSS-V), and rated the intensity and valence of facial emotional expressions taken from the Karolinska Directed Emotional Faces (KDEF) set. Participants also reported their perceived emotional arousal response to these stimuli. Using hierarchical regressions, we show that sensation seeking is related to higher self-reported arousal response to positive, negative, and neutral emotional facial expressions. Higher sensation seeking was also associated with higher perceived intensity but only for neutral facial expression, this relation fully mediated the association between sensation seeking and arousal response. This master’s thesis provides the first data on the relation between sensation seeking trait and individual differences in processing of emotions in others. It opens the door to future research on the potential impact of the sensation seeking personality trait on social functioning in young adults.
