Baker, Benjamin Hillel 31 May 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the relationship between part and whole in novels by Antoine François Prévost to question the modern assumption that prototypical novelistic narrative structure and dispositive structure (chapters, books, volumes, parts, installments, etc.) share the same points of articulation. In Prévost’s day, the combination of the unpredictable rhythm of publication in installments and the ever-present possibility of continuation made it difficult for authors and readers to identify a novel’s definitive conclusion. This uncertainty led to tension between a novel’s concrete parts and its imagined narrative whole, and that tension created what I have termed a segmentary esthetic that stands in contrast to both the more regularly serialized novels of the nineteenth century and to more recent single-installment novels. To support these hypotheses, I first investigate schemas of interaction between dispositive structure and narrative structure in Prévost’s novels that differ from modern formal expectations: pseudoworks (works-within-works) and narrative units that cross dispositive boundaries in the Mémoires d’un homme de qualité and the Voyages de Robert Lade, and interrupted publication and unauthorized continuation in Cleveland and Mémoires d’un honnête homme. I then identify similar interactions in two of Prévost’s more formally modern novels La Jeunesse du Commandeur and Histoire d’une Grecque moderne. This study shows that unstable boundaries can be compatible with compositional sophistication, and outlines a new method of analysis that can be applied to narrative fiction from other periods and in other media.

An exploration of the intrapsychic development and personality structure of serial killers through the use of psychometric testing

Barkhuizen, Jaco 12 September 2005 (has links)
The mystery surrounding serial homicide is the apparent lack of motive for the murder. No extrinsic motive such as robbery, financial gain, passion or revenge exists, as there usually is in the case of other murders. Serial homicide is a serious, worldwide problem that has received a large amount of media attention, but only a relatively small amount of scientifically based research exists on this phenomenon. Since the 1970s various models such as the psychosocial theory model, learning theory, the motivational, fantasy, neurological theory, psychiatric, post-modern, feminist and the paranormal/demonological models were used to explain the phenomenon of serial homicide. The researcher, however, states that these models do not satisfactorily address the intrapsychic/object relation development of the serial killers personality. The structure of the research project consists of analysis of the background information of two serial killers which was gathered from one semi-structured personal interview, psychometric testing (Thematic Apperception Test, Test of Object Relations and the Picture Test of Separation and Individuation) as well as from relevant literary sources. The information was interpreted using the selected psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freund and the object relation theory of Melanie Klein and the data was then analysed, interpreted and tested against the following research questions: “What is the intrapsychic origin of serial homicide?”; “What is the parent-child relationship like?”; “How does the parent-child relationship influence the object relations of the serial killer?”; “How does the parental relationship influence the serial killer’s interpersonal relationships?”. These questions determine the specific internalised factors that may have contributed to the eventual development of a serial killer’s personality. The research method that is employed is a qualitative, exploratory case study method. A qualitative study was selected due to the fact that there are currently not enough incarcerated serial killers in South Africa and from those incarcerated serial killers only two were willing to participate in the research. The case study method was selected because it deals with contemporary events, multiple data sources may be used and the findings can be generalised to other case studies. Data gathering was done by psychometric testing (TAT, PTSI and TOR), a semi-structured interview and other biographical information on the subjects. The data was analysed by the descriptive-dialogic case study method. The data integration method that was selected is the data integration method of the descriptive-dialogic case study method. The data was discussed in relation to the already developed theories. This implies that parallels were drawn between the processed information and the theories. Similarities and differences between the two case studies were discussed and a general overview of the intrapsychic structure of the serial killer was stated. / Dissertation (MA (Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Psychology / unrestricted

Optimal pose selection for the identification of geometric and elastostatic parameters of machining robots / Sélection de poses optimales pour l'identification des paramètres géométriques et élasto-statiques de robots d'usinage

Wu, Yier 15 January 2014 (has links)
The thesis deals with the optimal pose selection for geometric and elastostatic calibration for industrial robots employed in machining of large parts. Particular attention is paid to the improvement of robot positioning accuracy after compensation of the geometric and elastostatic errors. To meet the industrial requirements of machining operations, a new approach for calibration experiments design for serial and quasi-serial industrial robots is proposed. This approach is based on a new industry-oriented performance measure that evaluates the quality of calibration experiment plan via the manipulator positioning accuracy after error compensation, and takes into account the particularities of prescribed manufacturing task by introducing manipulator test-poses. Contrary to previous works, the developed approach employs an enhanced partial pose measurement method, which uses only direct position measurements from an external device and allows us to avoid the non-homogeneity of relevant identification equations. In order to consider the impact of gravity compensator that creates closed-loop chains, the conventional stiffness model is extended by including in it some configuration dependent elastostatic parameters, which are assumed to be constant for strictly serial robots. Corresponding methodology for calibration of the gravity compensator models is also proposed. The advantages of the developed calibration techniques are validated via experimental study, which deals with geometric and elastostatic calibration of a KUKA KR-270 industrial robot.

Webová brána pro přístup k měřicím zařízením / Web Gateway for Access to Measurement Devices

Zsíros, Anton January 2011 (has links)
This Master's thesis deals with design and implementation of a system that can access remote devices through computer network. Specifically, the serial port devices and audio input devices. The first step of the thesis was to do a survey in the field of similar available, focusing on applications that could be integrated into the final system. For serial port devices, it was necessary to find a solution that would allow redirecting data from the physical device to a computer network and creating virtual serial ports on client systems, through which would users access these devices. To transfer audio streams from audio input devices through computer network was chosen RTP protocol, which is well suited for data transmission in real time. The thesis also contains the description of handling received RTP stream on a client system. The result is a complex system that integrates the functionality of mentioned tools into a single unit.

Hybrid Debugger Software on RISC-V MCU : A no cost debugging solution foreducational use / Hybriddebugger för RISC-V MCU : En kostnadsfri debuglösning för utbildningssyfte

Remahl, Linus January 2022 (has links)
This work details the implementation of a debugger for a small embedded RISC-V system. KTH uses an in-house designed microcontroller development board for computer and electronics design courses. The boards did not incorporate hardware debugging capabilities and no prior software implementation fulfilled the requirements for the specific target system. The debugger used a hybrid software and hardware approach for achievingbasic debugging features such as breakpoints, stepping and break signals. The hybrid approach repurposed the microcontrollers debug module to enable debugging with no external hardware. The debugger implementation met all of the requirements for being ableto be used in the intended educational setting, and had a limited footprint withregard to resource usage, but with room for further optimization.

M., Krishnakumar, G., Padma, S., Sreelal, V., Narayana T., P., Anguswamy, S., Singh U. 11 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1995 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / The Remote Unit (RU) for a decentralised on-board base-band telemetry system is designed for use in launch vehicle missions of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This new design is a highly improved and miniaturised version of an earlier design. The major design highlights are as follows. Usage of CMOS Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology in place of LS TTL devices, the ability to acquire various types of data like high level single ended or differential analog, bi-level events and two channels of high speed asynchronous serial data from On-Board Computers (OBCs), usage of HMC technology for the reduction of discrete parts etc. The entire system is realised on a single 6 layer MLB and is packaged on a stackable modular frame. This paper discusses the design approach, tools used, simulations carried out, implementation details and the results of detailed qualification tests done on the realised qualification model.
