Gedragsprobleme van seksueel misbruikte seuns in 'n kliniekskool / Joané van Heerden

Van Heerden, Joané January 2014 (has links)
Sexual abuse of children is a complex and sensitive subject that has an influence on children , families and the wider community . In referring to the term sexual abuse it is usually associated with girls. Although there is very little literature available that focus specially on the sexual abuse of boys, it can never be denied. The clinic involved school where the research was conducted is a school for behaviour difficult boys in middle childhood (6-12 years). There are a large number of sexually abused boys or boys who have been exposed to sexual abuse in the concerned school. It is clear that children who have been sexually abused sometimes have a variety of problems including behavioral problems. There is little research available in South Africa that focuses specifically on sexual abuse and behavioral problems. It seems that boys externalize trauma and that lead to behavioral problems. It was therefore necessary to determine the impact of sexual abuse on the boys, to ensure that appropriate services can be delivered to these boys. The purpose of this study was to investigate behavioral problems of sexual abuse of boys in a clinic school by means of a literature study and empirical research. The researcher conducted qualitative and quantitative approach at the same time. For the quantitative approach, the total population of the sexually abused boys in the clinic school was involved in the study and a questionnaire compiled by the researcher was completed. For the qualitative approach, focus group was held with " SBST " ( School Based Support Team ) , teachers and child and youth care workers. There are recommendations made that seek to ensure that proper services can be provided to the sexual abuse of boys in a clinic school, in order to address their problem behavior and rehabilitate them faster. / MSW (Forensic Practice), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Bodenstein, Johannes Marthinus de Wet 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / In recent years, the issue of fathers’ involvement with their families has increasingly gained support and currently more research focuses on fathers’ involvement and what fathers must do to become more involved with their families. The aim of this study was to gain insight into boys’ perception of fathers’ involvement in the lives of boys. The participants were boys in Grade 7 and 8 whose parents are married and who both live in the same house with them. The data of this explorative, qualitative study were gathered by means of focus group discussions. The 18 participants who complied with the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into three focus groups of six participants each. The groups were asked an open question and the discussion was audio-recorded. The group discussions were transcribed, after which the data were loaded onto the Atlas.ti program for analysis. In this analysis technique, related aspects (termed ‘codes’, which are formed by related quotations by participants) are grouped to form families (of codes). Based on the description by Lamb, Pleck, Charnov and Levine (1987) of fathers’ involvement and the qualitative data analysis, content could be given to the families responsibility, accessibility and engagement. The family responsibility, which includes any activities of the father regarding the child’s direct care or arrangements regarding the care of the child, is the largest family in terms of number of codes and quotations. The most prominent code in this family in terms of number of quotations compared to the other codes, is to provide. This is followed by the codes discipline, set right and protect. Accessibility is the second largest family and entails the father being present as well as his availability to his son. The most important codes in this family are talking, to be there for the child and to pay attention to the child. The third family, engagement, includes the experience of caring, direct contact and interaction between the father and his son. The most important codes that emerged in this family are to demonstrate love and to hug. The specific content given to the three components of fathers’ involvement can be applied with success in the development and presentation of parent guidance programmes.

Gerber, Barend Paul January 2013 (has links)
During the growth spurt (GS) which forms part of the mid-adolescence period of boys (13-17 years), considerable changes take place in the body composition of boys. It is therefore an unstable period where imbalances in body proportions (muscle mass, fat mass, neurological development) occur, that might have an effect on sport performance. It is also accompanied by changes in physical and motor fitness. The study firstly aimed to determine anthropometric growth changes in stature, arm span, mass, sitting height and sitting height ratio during mid-adolescence over a period of three years. The study secondly aimed to investigate the developmental changes in physical fitness (muscle strength, aerobic endurance) and motor fitness abilities (speed, agility, hand- eye coordination, explosive power) during the mid-adolescence phase of boys and finally to investigate possible relationships between anthropometric and physical and motor fitness abilities over the course of three years. A convenience sample consisting of all the grade 8 learners (n=182) of a quintile 5 high school in Potchefstroom in the North-West province of South Africa was selected to participate in a longitudinal growth research project over a three year period. Only the boys, with a mean age of 13.58 years in grade 8, of whom 95.4 % were white, 2.3% black and 2.3% colored boys, were part of the study. In 2010, 87 boys had complete measurements, while the final group in 2012 with completed follow-up measurements, were 73 boys. The physical and motor fitness components were measured according to the Australian Sport Search Program consisting of 10 tests (4 anthropometrical tests, 5 motor fitness tests, 1 physical fitness test). The cricket ball throwing test was added as an additional test. The anthropometrical measurements were made using the protocol of ISAK, while sitting height was measured according to the Canadian Sports for Life protocol. Sitting height ratio was calculated according to the formula (sitting height/stature x 100). The data was processed by “Statistica for Windows” Statsoft-computer program package. Descriptive statistics that included means (M), standard deviations (SD) and minimum and maximum values were used. A repeated measures over time analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a Bonferonni adjustment was done to analyze the differences over a period of 3 years within the group for all variables, where p<0.05 indicates a statistically significant difference. A partial correlation analysis was used to determine correlations between variables. Practical significance of correlations was determined according to Cohen’s d-value (0.1=small, 0.3=medium, 0.5=large). The results showed that during mid-adolescence in the period 13.58-14.58 years, boys grow considerably in stature, body mass, arm span and sitting height with accompanying improvement in motor and physical fitness abilities while sitting height ratio showed the greatest increase from 14.58-15.57 years. Stature, mass and arm span showed a parallel development up to 15 years after which further development leveled off, while mass increase showed no leveling off. Speed, agility, coordination and isometric-dynamic shoulder strength (basketball throw) also showed the biggest and significant improvement from 13.58-15.57 years, while explosive leg power and upper body arm and shoulder strength (vertical jump, cricket ball throw) showed the biggest and significant improvements during the period from 14.58 to 15.57 years. Significant correlations up to r=0.74; p<0.05, were found between changes in physical and motor fitness abilities and anthropometric variables, although the correlations become smaller over the 3-year period. Hand-eye coordination showed no correlation with any anthropometrical changes, while upper body strength correlated with all the anthropometrical measurements except sitting height ratio throughout the three years. It was concluded that the most accelerated growth and development took place from 13.58- 15.57 years in boys when they are in their first high school year and which falls within the mid-adolescent period (13-15 years). Furthermore, clear relationships were found between anthropometric, motor- and physical fitness variables. This knowledge of the rate of growth and motor fitness development and the relationships between these variables during the midadolescence period can provide a better understanding of changes that boys underwent during the mid-adolescent period, and can help monitoring the level of physical maturity in adolescents in order to develop training, competition and rehabilitation programs according to their developmental and not their chronological age. This cannot only prevent injuries, but also prevent early burnout in sport.

Boshoff, Christa January 2014 (has links)
South African adolescents are more likely to participate in high-risk behaviours, because they are exposed to high-risk environments that have a negative impact on them. The choices that adolescents make during this explorative life stage will influence and determine certain outcomes of their adult lives. Therefore, it is crucial to improve adolescents’ psychological well-being, as they are the future generation adults. Adolescents with behaviour problems form a unique population who do not respond effectively to traditional therapy, and researchers are continuously searching for more effective ways to reach this population. Equine-assisted therapy (EAT) is an intervention that has been proven to be effective with this population and to provide better outcomes than traditional psychotherapy. Although the value and positive effects of EAT has been proven, there is a gap in the literature concerning research on this topic, especially with regard to research conducted by means of quantitative methods. The overarching goal of this study was to evaluate and refine an EAT programme aimed at improving the psychological well-being of boys in a school of industry. This goal was attained by utilising a quantitative, experimental research design. The Solomon four-group design was applied, because it effectively controls pre-test sensitisation and provides the best control against threats to internal validity. The sample was selected from a school of industry near Bloemfontein, which provides residence to a group of adolescent boys who display behaviour problems. The 40 boys (N = 40) included in the sample were divided into two experimental groups of 10 boys each and two control groups of 10 boys each. During the course of the study, one of the boys withdrew and the sample was reduced to 39 boys. The programme was administered to the boys in the experimental groups. Before the programme commenced, one of the experimental groups and one of the control groups completed the pre-test. The psychometric instruments used were a biographical questionnaire, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Coping Orientations to the Problems Experienced Questionnaire. The boys then completed the EAT programme which consisted of eight sessions, each with its own outcomes and designed to improve subjective well-being and coping. After completion of the programme, all four groups completed the post-test consisting of the same psychometric instruments as the pre-test. The results showed that the programme significantly improved the boys’ subjective well-being. The boys’ problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping and dysfunctional coping were also increased significantly. These improvements can be attributed directly to the programme, because pre-test sensitisation was controlled. The study found that the EAT programme had a significant positive effect on the boys’ subjective well-being and coping. The conclusion can be drawn that the programme significantly improved the boys’ psychological well-being. The programme was evaluated and refined, and recommendations were made for its future use. / PhD (Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Boys' experience of an absent father: a gestalt therapeutic description

Patrick, Louise Copeland 31 March 2006 (has links)
Summary With the rise of the divorce rate and the decline of the nuclear family, boys are more frequently being deprived of a father-presence in their homes. The aim of this study was to qualitatively explore and describe boys' experiences of their relationships with their absent fathers. Three boys from different racial and cultural groups were chosen as case studies and worked with from a Gestalt Play Therapy Perspective. Data was gathered from the therapeutic sessions, as well as from semi structured interviews with the childcare workers of the boys. The findings of the study appear to concur with existing literature, namely that boys with absent fathers experience difficulties in the areas of emotional, social, cognitive and moral development. Recommendations are made as to how boys with absent fathers may best be supported. / SOCIAL WORK / MDIAC (PLAY THERAPY)

Manlike identiteit: `n begeleidingsraamwerk vir vaders en hul seuns / Male identity : a guiding framework for fathers and their sons

Grobler, Hermanus Bosman 30 November 2006 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / This study is aimed at the development of a guiding framework for fathers and their adolescent sons by focusing on male identity as the main binding factor in the relationship between father a and son. The establishment, as well as the confusion regarding male identity, have been stated as starting point and problem statement of the study. The need regarding the way in which the father and son can be guided within this dynamic relationship in order to establish male identity, has been stated as motivation for the study. The need regarding the guidance of fathers and their sons was thus the primary aim with the research question, namely what the most applicable factors in a guiding framework should be that would guide fathers and their sons in order to support the formation of male identity within the sons. The research methodology that has been followed, was from a Gestalt perspective as meta theoretical assumption from which qualitative, explorative and descriptive strategies were followed. The qualitative strategy consisted of an auto-ethnography and semi-structured interviews. The trustworthiness of the research has been strengthened by a quantitative component of the research by utilizing questionnaires, after which data was collected and analysed. A purposive sample was drawn that included respondents from the Drakenstein municipal area in the Boland district. Categories that were identified from data from the semi-structured interviews, as well as indicators from the questionnaires, have been integrated, from which propositions were constructed. Six themes and resulting guiding strategies were presented in the form of a guiding framework. / Social Work / D.Diac. (Spelterapie)
