The Distribution of cetaceans off the coast of South Africa and South West Africa / Namibia

Findlay, Ken P. January 1989 (has links)
Thirty - seven species of cetacean are recorded from southern African waters. Four thousand, five hundred and thirty - seven records of approximately 60 000 cetaceans were analysed to defme distribution patterns of these species, including dedicated sightings (both scientific and commercial), incidental sightings, commercial catches and specimens. Records of dedicated scientific sightings and incidental sightings were analysed by water depth, sea surface temperature and salinity and season, while commercial sightings and catches were analysed by month and water depth. Of the thirty - seven species recorded within the region, four mysticetes and one odontocele could be described as migratory, having a marked seasonal occurrence within the region, three species were defmed as possible migrators as they were not recorded in the dedicated data and showed seasonality in the incidental sighting and specimen databases, 20 species (19 odontocetes and one mysticete) could be described as resident (in that they were found throughout the year) and five species were termed "semi - resident" (certain components or forms of which showed strong seasonal occurrence, while other individuals had a year- round occurrence). Records of a further four species were too few to defme distribution patterns or seasonality. Analysis of the distribution of the large species showed three species (Eubalaena australis, Megaptera novaeangliae and Caperea marginata) to occur in nearshore waters and four species (Balaenoptera musculus, B. physalus, B. borealis and P.macrocepha/us) to occur in deep waters only. B. acutorostrata was recorded in both nearshore and offshore waters, while the two forms of B. edeni were found in nearshore and offshore waters respectively. The distribution analyses of the smaller odontocele species showed a number of component patterns including cosmopolitan, pelagic cosmopolitan, tropical, sub tropical and warm temperate components of the Agulhas Current, warm temperate component of the south coast, a component of the Agulhas Bank, a south and east coast inshore component and west coast inshore and offshore components. The high diversity of species within the region results from the complex variety of zoogeographic components found within the relatively small study area. These arise from the complex oceanographic conditions, brought about by the upwelling of cold Central Atlantic water inshore on the west coast, the movement of subtropical water into the east coast region by the Agulhas Current and the mixing of Benguela and Agulhas Current waters to the south of the sub - continent. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 1989. / gm2014 / Zoology and Entomology / unrestricted

No cinema com a psicanálise: Seven e a perversão

Azevedo, Natanael Duarte de 30 May 2012 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 820641 bytes, checksum: 14bb9bdbcff2eb6a60db83f7c1376322 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-05-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This present paper intends to works with studies about perversion, including the conception of deviant sexuality, from Middle age, to the structuralist studies proposed by Jacques Lacan, verifying in the movie Seven, by David Fincher, the possibility of interpreting that John Doe s acts are characteristics of perversion. Our object is to demonstrate how the serial killer s actions in the movie Seven can reveal movements of the unconscious that follow a motivation/manipulation of desire. To accomplish our goal, we will resort to three lines of theoretical discussion: 1) the perversion under the vision of fetishization (objectification of the sexual desire), the brain degeneration, the substitution of the desire and psychological structure (Cf. ROUDINESCO, 2008; BINET 1904 [1879]; KRAFFT-EBING (apud ROUDINESCO, 2008); FREUD, 1989 [1905]; LACAN, 1988 [1956] and 1999 [1958]);2) the seven capital sins as a way of maintenance and reintegration of the power of the church (Cf. DELUMEAU, 2003; LE GOFF, 2011; AQUINO, 2000); 3) the filmic adaptation through the prism of transtextuality (Cf. STAM, 2006; ANDREW, 1984; HUTCHEON, 2011). We analyze the film Seven seeking to infer from the crimes committed by the murderer John Doe, the movements of the unconscious that reveal the diviation of the desire to objectification of the victims. We realize that the diviation of the sexual objects can be seen both from the point of view of the religious inversion such as psychoanalysis. For our analysis, we will show the verbal and visual texts of the murders presented by the film, then, we propose the analysis of the sequence of crimes based on two types of perversion: voyeuristic (pleasure to look at the other) and sadism (pleasure to overpower the other). We observed in our research the intrinsic relationship between voyeur and sadistic acts and religious motivation witch can determine the crimes by the purification of the capital sins. Thereby, with the possibility of reading the film Seven as an adaptation based on source texts that deal with themes such as sin and transgression of the law, we saw that the construction of the film reveals us a (re) reading of the texts about capital sins and clinical work with perversion patients.

Loyalty, disobedience, and the myth of the Black Legend in the Philippines during the Seven Years War

Flannery, Kristie Patricia 09 October 2014 (has links)
This paper interrogates the nature of loyalty and disloyalty to Spain in the Philippines during the British occupation of Manila in 1762-1764. It examines the identity and motivations of the thousands of soldiers who joined Simón de Anda’s army that mobilized against the British invaders, as well the Indigenous people who rose up in rebellion in the provinces to the north of Manila during this period, in order to preserve Spanish colonial rule. It also considers the nature of infidelity to Spain in the occupied Philippines. This paper argues that, in a large part due to the cohesiveness of Catholicism among converted Indians, the Spanish empire in the Philippines proved remarkably resilient under the pressure of invasion and occupation. The Black Legend blinded the British to the complexities of the real balance of power in in Manila and the Philippines during the Seven Years War. / text

To What Extent, and in What Ways, are Earl W Stevick’s Seven Learning Categories Applied in Swedish Secondary Education?

Johansson, Elisabeth January 2013 (has links)
Today’s students are struggling to achieve a pass level at secondary education and have difficulties in learning core subjects such as English. By increasing the size of classes, reducing the number of teachers and constantly reviewing the curriculum, the students are finding it more difficult to achieve a pass grade in foreign languages. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to acquire a broader knowledge of how, and whether, Earl W Stevick’s seven learning categories are applied in Swedish education. The findings of this study indicated that some of the secondary school teachers provide occasionally for all different learning categories, but were unable to accommodate all styles regularly. Moreover, university lecturers were unfamiliar with Stevick’s learning categories. Thus, his theories were not part of the formal university curriculum. However, as only one secondary school and seven universities were included in the study, no generalization for the Swedish educational system could be made, and a more extensive research study is encouraged.

Characterization of Beta-arrestin-Modulated Lipid Kinase Activities for Diacylglycerol and Phosphatidylinositol 4-Phosphate

Nelson, Christopher David 10 May 2007 (has links)
The study of arrestins as regulators of seven transmembrane receptor (7TMR) signaling has revealed multiple levels of complexity, initiating desensitization of G protein activity and coordination of receptor internalization via clathrin‐coated pits. Recently, β‐arrestins have also been shown to act as adaptor proteins, mediating G protein‐independent signaling as well as scaffolding of enzymes that degrade second messenger molecules. This latter function was demonstrated by β‐arrestins recruiting PDE4 phosphodiesterase to Gs‐coupled β2‐adrenergic receptors, enhancing metabolism of the second messenger cAMP. As β‐arrestins universally interact with members of the 7TMR superfamily, we sought to determine if this phenomenon of concerted desensitization might be applicable to additional receptor subtypes. We screened for β‐arrestin‐binding proteins among modulators of diacylglycerol and IP3 (second messengers downstream of Gq‐coupled 7TMRs). We observed β‐ arrestins constitutively interacted with members of the diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) family, which phosphorylate diacylglycerol to create phosphatidic acid. Furthermore, examining lipid extracts of 32P labeled cells separated by TLC, we observed that overexpression of β‐arrestin enhanced phosphatidic acid (PA) production after M1 muscarinic receptor stimulation. Conversely, depletion of β‐arrestins by RNA interference showed significantly decreased agonist‐stimulated PA accumulation. Additionally, overexpression of a β‐arrestin2 mutant that binds DGKs but not receptors served as a dominant negative for agonist‐dependent DGK activity. These results demonstrate a requirement for β‐arrestins in DGK translocation to the membrane, and specifically to activated 7TMRs, where concentrations of second messengers are at their highest. Phosphatidic acid is an effector for several enzymes, including the phosphatidylinositol 5‐kinases (PIP5K), which phosphorylate PIP to make PIP2. Thus, we hypothesized β‐arrestin‐targeted DGKs may regulate PIP5K activity. PIP5K Iα associated with β‐arrestin2 in an agonist‐dependent manner in HEK293 cells, and a β‐ arrestin2 mutant defective in receptor endocytosis (a PIP2‐dependent function) was impaired. Furthermore, knockdown of β‐arrestin2 by RNAi significantly decreased the amount of PIP5K Iα detected in receptor immunoprecipitates. In TLC assays, overexpressing both β‐arrestin2 and PIP5K Iα enhanced agonist‐stimulated PIP2 labeling, while either protein alone had no effect. These data support the concept of β‐ arrestin binding to 7TMRs and enriching local membrane concentrations of PA, which then stimulates production of PIP2, promoting receptor internalization. / Dissertation
