Negotiating identities : the case of evangelical Christian women in LondonGaddini, Katie Christine January 2018 (has links)
Contestations around religion and secularism in the UK continue to unfold. These debates converge most polemically around women’s religiosity, as evidenced by proposed bans on the hijab, and the criminalisation of female circumcision. Research on religious women creates a binary juxtaposition between religion as an oppressive force, on the one hand, and religion as a means of emancipation for women, on the other. These accounts fail to address how religious women experience their religious communities as oppressive and choose to stay. In this doctoral thesis, I introduce a new analytic approach to the study of religious women by investigating how women stay in a restrictive religious context and the strategies they employ, in order to theoretically expand understandings of agency. This research examines how British evangelical Christian women negotiate their religious and gendered identities in London. My findings are based on a 12-month ethnography and 33 semi-structured interviews with unmarried evangelical women (aged 22 – 40) living in London. Recognising the unique challenges that single religious women face, including dating and sexual abstinence, I focussed on unmarried women. My research asks: How is the female evangelical subject formed through religious practices such as observing sexual purity, attending Bible study groups and fellowship with like-minded believers? Taking a lived religion approach leads me to theoretically analyse how women practice their religion in everyday, ordinary ways. I then examine how these practices shape women’s identities. Evangelical women are assumed to be either empowered by submission, or frustrated and leaving the church, but an exploration of the everyday, ordinary ways that women live their religion reveals the nuanced and important identity negotiations that women make. My key finding is that evangelical women confront a double bind in their identity formation; the attachment to a Christian identity liberates and supports women, but also ensnares them in a constraining network of norms. Through this discovery, I emphasise the salience of gender in the study of religious practice. By analysing how identities require exclusion for consolidation, I also explore women’s responses to marginality, and re-conceptualise agency. Despite important theoretical contributions to understanding religious women’s agency, scholars continue to ground their approach to agency solely in piety and submission, obscuring alternative modalities. By refusing to align with one side of the emancipation/oppression binary, my research brings a renewed attention to the benefits and the costs of religious belonging.

Learning sex and doing gender : cultures of heterosexuality in the secondary schoolKehily, Mary Jane January 1999 (has links)
The thesis uses an inter-disciplinary, feminist and cultural studies approach to sexuality and schooling. The study documents the ways in which issues of sexuality feature in the school context and the implications of this for sexual learning and the production of sexual identities. The study examines the ways in which pupil cultures negotiate issues of sexuality. Pupil cultures can be understood as constitutive of informal groups of school students who actively ascribe meanings to events within specific social contexts. This approach points to the ways in which such encounters produce individual and collective identities which carry both social and psychic investments. The study focuses upon two key areas in the field of sexuality and schooling; the shaping of pupil cultures and the production of sexual identities; and secondly, the role of the school in relation to issues of sexuality. The thesis develops an analysis of pedagogic approaches to Personal and Social Education (PSE) and the ways in which the meanings and messages of the curriculum are mediated by pupil cultures. The emphasis on pupil cultures can be seen as a way of giving epistemological status to school students who receive the curriculum but play no part in the structuring of the school organisation or the plannýng of lessons. However, this approach can have the effect of seeing teachers as an oppressive, monolithic force, defined in opposition to pupils. As a corrective to this the experiences of individual teachers and their personal accounts of teaching and learning in the field of sex education are drawn upon. Teachers' perspectives can be seen as an important element in developing an understanding of current practice, in an area where both teachers and pupils may have investments in the construction and maintenance of symbolic boundaries. The study aims to contribute to academic debate and practitioner knowledge in the field of sexuality education. it is anticipated that this study will facilitate an analysis of sexuality and contemporary schooling in ways that develop our understanding of heterosexuality as a dominant category, and have implications for policy and practice in this field. The main findings of the thesis point to the significance of peer group interactions to the collective enactment of masculinities, femininities and their relationship to the sexual. The key argument of the thesis concerns the activity and agency of pupil cultures in the regulation and performance of gendered heterosexualities; through exchanges in friendship groups in school, young men and young women learn about sex and do gender. The project highlights the ways in which the acquisition of sexual knowledge and the enactment of gender is in dialogue with popular cultural forms such as teenage magazines, television programmes and pornographic representations. Moreover, the analysis of pupil peer groups stress the interrelationship of psychic and social processes to collectively generated versions of sexgender.

An inquiry into adult adoptees' journeying with their sexualitySims, Michael C. January 2017 (has links)
This multi-layered and multi-perspective inquiry focuses on adult adoptees’ sense-making of, and presentation of, their sexuality and self/identity. It is situated firmly within postmodern and social constructionist traditions, whereby both the personal/particular and social/shared dimensions of experiences are negotiated, disenfranchised/marginalised voices are privileged, and the distinctions between, research, art and therapy are disrupted. Due to the adoptees being placed in, and conceived as, marginalised group members, their local and marginalised voices are privileged within this thesis. The aims of this research were: To gain access to, and gather, adult adoptee’s personal narratives/stories around the subject of their sexuality, their sexual identity and their adoption; To give ‘voice’ to adult adoptees around the subject of sexuality and adoption; To represent, and then present, these narratives/stories, honouring both the individual particulars of ‘lived experience’ and also to highlight any shared thematic qualities of the participants. A bricolage approach was used, using Kinchloe and Berry’s (2004) formalised theoretical concept of the ‘POET’ (the point of entry text). To capture the multiplicity of the research, and the POETs, a three-phase approach was applied. Phase one incorporated my auto-ethnographic account, of my lived experience of sexuality as an adoptee, through an analysis of my narratives and poems. Phase two explored the participants’ understanding, and presentation of, their sexuality from the analysis of their interview data. These data were analysed through a heuristic approach, developing individual depictions, a group depiction and then a final creative synthesis. In phase three, an interpretative phenomenological analysis, was applied to highlight thematic individual and shared themes of the participants’ data, to present a more structured and thematic representation. The data from phase one, two and three, highlighted the vulnerability, and cultural socio-political constructs, that can affect the self-formation and sexuality of an adoptee. The data from phase three established four superordinate themes: 1. Sexual attitudes, 2. Vulnerability, 3. The ‘Other’, and 4. The Feminine. The research demonstrates that adult adoptees, as vulnerable, are more open and susceptible to external influence regarding their sexuality and self-formation, and proposes an ‘inherent potential toward vulnerability’ within the adoptee. Therefore, there is a relationship between the adoptee, as inherently vulnerable, and how they constitute their sexuality and self-formation. Implications for practice require careful ethical consideration of the adoptees’ inherent vulnerability and how this impacts their sexuality and self-formation. These considerations for good practice/therapeutic intervention are underpinned by an awareness of potential ethical, political and social issues regarding the adoptee’s susceptible influence by the ‘other’. Therefore, an awareness of how ‘non-directive practice’ can be integrated ethically by the practitioner is emphasised. These implications are not always evident in counselling/psychotherapy training and supervision, and therefore need careful consideration by the practitioner at a personal level, and in relation to social policy, when working with adoptees.

Based on this assumption, it was formulated in the dissertation work, an analysis of the relationship between Cinema and Sexuality in order to understand, describe, reflect and analyze possible changes around the performative behaviors of male homosexual from the introduction of them in film production, arising from the mass culture industry. These productions are located in three different decades. In this case, the Cinema has not only the reproductive character of realities, but also a producing agent and consolidating them. The methodology applied was discourse analysis of three film works, namely La Cage aux Folles (1978), In & Out (1997) and Boat Trip (2002). Diploma thesis with the title "Analysis of queer child through the movie" is situated to the context of queer theories. These theories are discussed through the movie "Tomboy" (2011). Theoretical part of the thesis discusses fundamental theoretical background including attitudes towards to concept of gender within gender studies. The thesis is also focused on the theory of performativity and also discusses the normative socialization of children and their nonconformist behaviors. Key opinions to queer theories in context of sexuality and identity are introduced in this part of the thesis. I also present Stockton's arguments on queer child. Research section presents methodological part of analysis of the movie Tomboy. It also presents the specific method, which is Stuart Hall's theory of representation. In the analysis of the movie there are major themes reflected - how the category of gender, queerness, sexuality and identity are constructed in the context of queer child. The basic concept of the thesis is an analysis of a TV programme "Q" broadcasted by the Czech Television. The programme surveys queer subculture not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad, deals with searching for identities across the genders and disrupts conventions stemming from values of the heteronormative society. The programme title refers directly to the concept of queer, which represents a social phenomenon bringing about gender and sexual diversity and plurality. The thesis looks at the genesis of the programme from its origins, to its production, its broadcasting and finally its cancellation and replacing with another format. The motivation and reasons of the production team and the management for carrying the programme through and including it in the broadcast programming is discussed here, as well as the related decision-making processes and production mechanisms or the way the authors use feminist theories and gender aspects in the programme. The thesis also takes into consideration the long-term development of the programme's ratings. The main working method is qualitative research in the form of semi-structured interviews with the programme's authors. In terms of media production the thesis deals with organizational practices in the programme's production.

La sexualité préconjugale au Maroc fait face à une triple illégitimité (religieuse, légale et sociale). Toutefois, le cadre normatif restrictif ne signifie pas qu’elle est inexistante. Cette étude tente de décoder les modes de pensée, de vie et de verbalisation de la sexualité préconjugale dans le pays, en dépit de ce cadre normatif restrictif. Elle vise à l’analyser dans ses différents aspects : les représentations, le discours social et médiatique, la verbalisation, le cadre normatif, le monnayage socialisé inscrit en dehors des cadres traditionnels de la professionnalisation du sexe, les nouvelles tendances liées aux transformations technologiques et leur impact sur la sexualité, l’éducation sexuelle, la signification et les impacts du premier rapport sexuel, l’impact de la dynamique démographiques et socioéconomiques sur la sexualité et, enfin, les rapports de genre en matière de parcours sexuels et affectifs. Elle a pour principal objectif de mettre la lumière sur des réalités sociales que les discours et les représentations normatives tentent de minorer. L’objectif n’est donc pas de légitimer des pratiques sexuelles socialement rejetées mais plutôt de les comprendre. / Premarital sexuality in Morocco faces a triple illegitimacy (religious, legal and social). It aims to analyze it in its different aspects: representations, social and media discourse, verbalization, the normative framework, the socialized money making observed outside the traditional professionalization of sex framework, new trends linkedto technological changes and their impact on sexuality, sex education, the significance and impact of the first sexual intercourse, the influence of demographic and socio-economic dynamics on sexuality and finally sexual and emotional gender relations. Its main objective is to shed light on social realities that discourse and normative representations are trying to play down.
