Generation of Structural Relief by Fault Propagation Folding, Tien Shan, Kyrgzstan

Paulson, Kathryn 10 October 2013 (has links)
The southern margin of the Kochkor Basin in the Kyrgyz Tien Shan is actively shortening. The South Kochkor Fault, a reverse fault that places Paleozoic granite on Neogene sediments, varies in displacement from 0-2 km while the structural relief across the basin margin is 4 km. North of the fault, a 2 km thick panel of steeply-dipping to overturned sediments exhibits flexural shearing. This steep section is bounded by limbs of gently-dipping beds to the north and south. Northward, Neogene section is thrust over late Quaternary deposits in two younger episodes of faulting: the Akchop Hills Fault and the Aigyrdzal Hills Fault. Through 1:25,000 scale mapping I have demonstrated that of structural relief in the area is shared by fault propagation folding and faulting on a steep, reverse fault that shallows into a detachment. A complete geologic map of Kochkor, Kyrgyzstan is included with this thesis as a supplemental file.

The Studies on the Sustainable Development of Leisure Fishing in Penghu Shan-Shui Area

Chen, Yu-hsun 25 August 2009 (has links)
Rapid economic growth over the past few years enables people to have higher living standards and incomes. Penghu has great fisheryenvironment and excellent water quality. Shan-Shuei coast is located south of the Penghu and it is a famous tourist attraction. To have the breadth and depth, this research begins with the reference from other publications and documents. Observer has experienced and investigated environmental resources in Shan-Shuei area in Penghu. Surveys were given out to find out residents¡¦ opinion about recreational fishery development. Hawaii¡¦s and Japan¡¦s recreational fishery are successful. We can gain some valuable experience by comparing their background, fishery legislation, and management strategies with Penghu. This research investigated Shan-Shuei residents and tourists. Resident survey is divided into three parts, which are community, environment, and economy. Tourist survey is focused on landscape satisfaction, tour quality satisfaction, and the importance of the recreational fishery development. Based on the survey result, comparison with Hawaii and Japan, and reference from publications, Penghu recreational fishery should reform the following four areas which are government sponsorship, legislation, development management, and execution in order to have a sustainable management in the future.

Geology and ore genesis of the Ma On Shan iron deposit, Hong Kong

Choi, Wing-sang, Vincent, 崔穎生 January 2013 (has links)
Ma On Shan Iron Mine was a only few economic deposit in Hong Kong for which have been closed for more than decades. There is lack of modern geological study of the mine. In order to understand the origin of the iron mine formation, microscopic and macroscopic study of underground were used in terms of field observation, thin section, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). In this study, ore formation is due to granitic magma contact with dolomitic marble which formed the Ma On Shan magnetite Skarn. Moreover, the mineral forming sequence is proposed. Magnetite and magnesium humite subgroup form in the early stage. Then the retrograde minerals are dominated by actinolite, tremolite fluorite and magnesium humite subgroup. In the late stage, some metallic minerals and rare earth mineral are disseminated within late stage vein, they are pyrite, cassiterite, scheelite and thorium/yttrium compound. Sellaite, cassiterite, scheelite, thorium/yttrium compound are newly discovered in Ma On Shan Iron Mine thanks to the modern technology. However, some common minerals have been mentioned by pervious authors are not found, e.g. garnet, this may due to the zonation and spatial distribution of mineral formation. / published_or_final_version / Applied Geosciences / Master / Master of Science
