An analysis of the relationship between writing skills and Short Messaging Service language : a self–regulatory perspective / Candice Proudfoot

Proudfoot, Candice January 2011 (has links)
Self–regulation in writing is viewed as critically important in order to be a good writer. With the advent of cellular telephony, what passes as ‘good’ writing is being challenged with the introduction of the abbreviated form of SMS (Short Messaging Service) language. The purpose of this study was to determine the nature of the changes in SMS spelling and whether or not these changes affected the participants’ spelling age and their ability to write formally within the context of a formal SMS and the English language class. This study also aimed to determine whether a relationship exists between self–regulatory skills and writing in SMS. A sequential explanatory mixed–method research design was selected in order to address the research questions which had been posed. The study examined the nature of Short Messaging Service (SMS) language and the relationship between self–regulation and SMS, using a dominant quantitative survey design which was followed by a qualitative phase which explored and explained the phenomena which had been exposed in the quantitative phase of this study. The results of this study indicated that SMS language is an abbreviated form of digital writing, which is colloquial and informal in nature. SMS language is used in SMS text messages and within the forum of the chatroom MXit. The results also indicated that the participants in this study use the self–regulatory strategies of goal setting, strategic planning, self–recording, self–evaluation and self–reaction when writing SMS text messages that are more formal in nature. Furthermore, no evidence of SMS language could be found in an analysis of writing portfolios, indicating that SMS language does not affect the academic writing skills of the participants in this study. The main conclusion was that although this study was completed on a very small scale and that it would be inappropriate to generalise, the implementation of and research regarding the nature of SMS and self–regulation in SMS writing, require attention in order to ensure that the self–regulatory skills possessed by learners in our schools are used optimally in order to promote literacy and good writing practices. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Learning and Teaching))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Diogo Francisco Borba Rodrigues.pdf: 1924185 bytes, checksum: 9fc99c1e969769f5429de4703c66669d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-02-21 / Models and software have been developed for irrigation management, however they don’t reach small farmers due to technical and economic limitations. This study aimed to develop tools for irrigation management using mobile phone, a technology already assimilated by society. The first tool called IGmanejo sends SMS to farmers with area’s name, irrigation depth and run time. The second tool is a Java application for mobile phone (mobile IGmanejo), which support irrigation management to farmers who have irrigation evaporimeter tank and rain gauge. This paper intend support a public policy of rational use of water in the semiarid region of Brazil, since it is free to farmer and may solve the current gap in irrigation technical assistance. Training curse to be able software use, climate monitoring equipment and sensitization of farmers to adopt such technology are essential points to success on farm. This software was evaluated according to water saving to growing cabbage crop, under three different seasons. The management simulations were done on a small farm, in Pernambuco state. Irrigation depth send by SMS IGmanejo water saving in 20% compared to reference software CropWat (FAO). For mobile IGmanejo were done two simulations of irrigation, using data from gauge evaporimeter tank (Class A) and using simplified tank, and also compared with those obtained by IGmanejo SMS. The results did not present statistically significant differences, confirming that the farmer may use more economical methods to estimate evapotranspiration (like simplified tank) instead of class A tank, which has high cost. The software showed that it is able to reduce of use of water on agriculture going to remote regions to support irrigation management with simplicity and quality.

Consumer behaviour in the context of SMS-based marketing

Shareef, M.A., Dwivedi, Y.K., Rana, Nripendra P. 27 September 2020 (has links)
Yes / Given the potential benefits such as time and location-based advertisements, the scope of interactivity and customisation through one-to-one target marketing, SMS-based (Short Messaging Service) advertisement, is now being considered as an important alternative marketing channel. This has raised a real challenge for marketers to harness the potential of this alternative channel by overcoming several limiting issues such as security, privacy, authenticity, and irritation of unknown senders. The main objective of this study is to identify and review relevant research issues faced by wireless marketing (particularly via SMS-based advertisement) as an aide to identify potential research gaps and for developing future guiding principles. The review and analysis of literature suggest that there is scope of undertaking further research on issues related to different cultures reflecting ubiquitous traits of mobile phone, SMS advertisement, market segmentation, location and time sensitive delivery, content and context of advertisement, language and appropriate delivery.
