Extending IMS specifications based on the charging needs of IPTV

<p>With the standardization of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the telecommunications scene becomes more and more converged and in the future we will most likely access our services from all kinds of devices and link them together. One important future access method that has so far been left out of the standardization is television. There is a need for Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) to work together with IMS and this thesis focuses on one aspect of that convergence, namely charging.</p><p>The problem explored in this thesis is if there is an efficient way of charging for IPTV services while taking advantage of the IMS charging functionality and this is done for two aspects of the problem. First, the possiblilty of an efficient Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signaling schema is investigated and then a good charging Application Programming Interface (API) to be used when developing applications is investigated. The findings of these two investigations are then tested and improved during the implementation of a demo application.</p><p>This thesis delivers specifications for a signaling schema that enables a Set-Top Box (STB) to pass charging information to an IMS network via INFO requests inside a special charging session. The schema is small and extendable to ensure that it can be modified further on if necessary. The thesis also delivers an encapsulating and intuitive charging API to be used by developers who want to charge for their services.</p>

An Ontological Approach to SIP DoS Detection

<p>Traditional public switched telephone networks (PSTN) are replaced more and more by VoIP services these days.  Although it is good for saving costs, the disadvantage of this development is that VoIP networks are less secure than the traditional  way of transmitting voice. Because VoIP networks are being deployed in open environments and rely on other network  services, the VoIP service itself becomes vulnerable to potential attacks against its infrastructure or other services  it relies on.</p><p>This thesis will present a discussion of security issues of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), the signalling protocol for  VoIP services. The main focus is on active attacks against the protocol that aim to reduce the service's availability -- so called  Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.</p><p>Existing countermeasures and detection schemes do not adequately differentiate between DoS attacks. However, the differentiation  is important with respect to performance loss, as various protection schemes involve more computationally intensive processes.</p><p>Based on that discussion, this thesis attempts to provide an ontological approach to describing, and eventually preventing attacks from  having their intended effects.</p>

An Investigation On Customer Interactional Principles And Face-threatening Speech Act Performance In Service Encounters: The Case Of Turkish And English

This thesis investigates self-guiding sociopragmatic interactional principles (SIP) in communication and choice of linguistic strategies of politeness during service encounters in Turkish and English. To this end, two questionnaires were administered to 67 monolingual native speakers of English (ENS) by online administration and 85 monolingual native speakers of Turkish (TNS) by pen and paper administration who were all university students. Data were collected (1) by a SIP questionnaire to determine what principles are important in deciding what to say, and (2) by a linguistic strategies of politeness questionnaire (LSQ) to determine the strategies subjects would employ in conflict-generating service encounters. Three sociopragmatic interactional superprinciples were identified through factor analysis, namely (a) Tact (cost-benefit), (b) Relational Communicative Style, and (c) Task achievement. It has been found that face is of central value in communication and the key to the design of politeness and that its maintenance appears to be a prerequisite to adjusting communicative style and goal-orientation. Results indicate that the major differences between TNS and ENS were related to the principles of &amp / #8216 / sounding restrained&amp / #8217 / , &amp / #8216 / sounding humorous&amp / #8217 / , and &amp / #8216 / sounding warm and friendly&amp / #8217 / . The principles of &amp / #8216 / hinting&amp / #8217 / and &amp / #8216 / clarity&amp / #8217 / were not found as opposites for the TNS whereas they were in negative correlation for the ENS. Moreover, findings for the LSQ demonstrate that realization of self-goal was more important for TNS than ENS as reflected in conflict-maximizing linguistic strategy choice. The study underscores the need for a novel approach to politeness that incorporates SIPs choice of linguistic strategy.

The interest for various multimedia services accessed via the Internet has been growing immensely along with the bandwidth available. A similar development has emerged in the 3G mobile network. The focus of this master thesis is on the speech/audio part of a 3G multimedia application. The purpose has been to implement a traffic generating tool that can measure QoS (Quality of Service) in 3G networks. The application is compliant to the 3G standards, i.e. it uses AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate), SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and RTP (Real Time Transport Protocol). AMR is a speech compression algorithm with the special feature that it can compress speech into several different bitrates. SIP signalling is used so that different applications can agree on how to communicate. RTP carries the speech frames over the network, in order to provide features that are necessary for media/multimedia applications. Issues like perception of audio and QoS related parameters is also discussed, from the perspective of users and developers.

The result of this master thesis report describes the advantages and the drawbacks that will arise when implementing an Ethernet based intercommunication system in military vehicles. The report presents a possible solution and describes how different sound applications will be implemented into the suggested solution. The report show that IP LAN in vehicles leads to more advantages than drawbacks. The main advantages are that all kind of media can share the same LAN and that there is a lot of knowledge of this technique in the civil area. The main drawback is about delay. The drawbacks are otherwise well known and methods are known to decrease the impact of them. In the suggested intercommunication system the processing delay gives the largest impact on not deliver data in real time. The suggested solution, with separate connections for intercom unit and PC platform to the switch at each crew member gives good reliability and security.

A Mobile Agent Based Service Architecture for Internet Telephony

<p>Internet Telephony defined as real time voice or multimediacommunications over packet switched networks dates back to theearly days of the Internet. ARPA's Network SecureCommunications project had implemented, as early as December1973, an infrastructure for local and transnet real time voicecommunication. Two main sets of standards have emerged: H. 323from the ITU-T and the session initiation protocol (SIP) fromthe Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Both includespecifications for value added services. Value added services,or more simply services, are critical to service providers'survival and success. Unfortunately, the service architecturesthat come with the ITU-T and the IETF sets of standards arerather weak. Although they are constantly evolving,alternatives and complements need to be researched. This thesiswhich is made up of a formal dissertation and 6 appendices,proposes a novel mobile agent based service architecture forInternet Telephony. The architecture addresses the issues noneof the existing architectures solves in a satisfactory manner.Furthermore it adds mobile agents to the panoply of servicecreation tools. The appendices are reprints of articlespublished in refereed magazines/journals or under considerationfor publication. The formal dissertation is a summary of thepublications. A consistent and comprehensive set ofrequirements are derived. They are TINA-C flavored, but adaptedto Internet Telephony. They are used to critically reviewrelated work and also used to motivate the use of mobile agentsas the pillars of a novel architecture. The components of thisnovel architecture are identified. The key component is themobile service agent. It acts as a folder and carriesservice(s) to which the end-user has subscribed. Mobile serviceagents need to be upgraded when new versions of service logicare available and when end-users make changes to service data.This thesis proposes a novel upgrading framework. The currentInternet infrastructure comprises a wide range of hosts. Mobileagent platforms are now available for most of thesehosts/clients including memory/processing power constrainedPDAs. Our mobile service agents need to adapt to hostvariability when roaming. A novel adaptivity framework is alsoproposed. These two frameworks are general and can be appliedto any other mobile agent which meets a basic set ofassumptions. A key advantage of a mobile agent based servicearchitecture is that it enables the developement of mobileagent based services. The thesis proposes a novel mobile agentbased multi-party session scheduler. The feasibility and theadvantages of the architecture proposed by this thesis havebeen demonstrated by a prototype on which measurements havebeen made. Future work includes the addition of a securityframework to the architecture, and refinenements to theupgrading and adaptivity frameworks. More mobile agent basedservices, especially mobile multi agent based services willalso be developed.</p>

Qualification accélérée des composants SiP

NXP Semiconductor à Caen ayant des compétences dans le développement destechnologies System in Package (SiP) et NXP Semiconductor à Eindhoven ayant unespécialité en qualification virtuelle, deux partenariats ont été mis en place pour réaliser uneétude sur la qualification accélérée des composants SiP. Une thèse orientée simulations a étéréalisée à l'université de Delft (Pays-Bas) par Xiaosong Ma et dirigée par Kaspar Jansen, enparallèle une thèse plus expérimentale a été réalisée avec l'université de Bordeaux 1 parCharles Regard, à Caen, et dirigée par Hélène Frémont. Ces deux thèses ont été effectuées enproche collaboration. Dans un premier temps, des véhicules de test ont été définisconjointement. Puis un ensemble de caractérisations des matériaux et de simulations a étémené à Delft, alors que des essais expérimentaux de qualification et des analyses dedéfaillance étaient menés à Caen. Tout au long de ces deux thèses, des échanges constants ontété entretenus afin de corréler les simulations par les expérimentations. Ce besoin industrield'étude sur la qualification des composants SiP vient de la très forte augmentation del'intégration des fonctions au sein des équipements mobiles. En effet la technologie SiPpermet de répondre dans des délais intéressants aux nécessités de miniaturisation imposéespar ces nouveaux développements.L'objectif de ce travail de thèse est donc de mettre en place des méthodes et destechniques pour optimiser la qualification des composants System in Package (SiP).

Design-for-manufacturability (DFM) for system-in-package (SiP) applications

Microelectronic systems packaging involves layout dimensions of the order of microns. During manufacturing, process variations will cause parameters to deviate from their nominal values. As a result, the manufactured circuit may no longer meet the specifications it is designed to satisfy. When producing high volume of electronics, assembly yield becomes very important. This is where tolerance margins of the design parameters play an important role. This means that the performance specifications should be satisfied if the process variations are within the given tolerance margin of design parameters. Research has been done on circuit level design for manufacturability methods. The main objective of the research is to study the layout level DFM methods for signal integrity issues and embedded Rf passive components and use design centering methodology to improve the output yield value. In this dissertation, emphasis is also laid on taking care of the regression error while calculating the yield value. With the developed method, the number of design iteration cycles to maximize yield is significantly reduced.

SIP-based content development for wireless mobile devices with delay constraints.

<p>SIP is receiving much attention these days and it seems to be the most promising candidate as a signaling protocol for the current and future IP telephony services. Realizing this, there is the obvious need to provide a certain level of quality comparable to the traditional telephone service signalling system. Thus, we identified the major costs of SIP, which were found to be delay and security. This thesis discusses the costs of SIP, the solutions for the major costs, and the development of a low cost SIP application. The literature review of the components used to develop such a service is discussed, the networks in which the SIP is used are outlined, and some SIP applications and services previously designed are discussed. A simulation environment is then designed and implemented for the instant messaging service for wireless devices. This environment simulates the average delay in LAN and WLAN in different scenarios, to analyze in which scenario the system has the lowest costs and delay constraints.</p>
