Entretanto sua adaptação à localidade, no decorrer dos séculos, concedeu-lhe os mais variados repertórios. Aspectos ligados ao uso, porém, demandaram soluções espaciais para problemáticas que permaneceram ao longo do tempo. Essas soluções que envolvem o programa de necessidades dos edifícios, sua dimensão e capacidade de uso, suas relações com a arquitetura das diferentes localidades e as consequentes ações de preservação da identidade e a organização dos elementos da liturgia, dentro do espaço interno do edifício, geraram as transformações que, reunidas, constituem uma radiografia da arquitetura da sinagoga no tempo. / The ancestry of the synagogue building attributed to this a central paper in the formation of the religious architecture occidental person. These solutions that involve the program of necessities of the buildings, its dimension and capacity of use, its relations with the architecture of the different localities and the subsequent actions of preservation of the identity and the organization of the elements of the liturgy inside of the internal space of the building, had generated the transformations that, congregated, constitute a picture of the architecture of the synagogue in the time.

O assentamento selêucida de Dura Europos constitui um apropriado campo de análise do processo de transformação cultural em antigas áreas coloniais. O sítio, fundado no entreposto entre as maiores civilizações orientais e ocidentais, é um assentamento multicultural que expressa a coexistência de judeus com várias populações. Esta tese analisa como o grupo de judeus desta cidade usou a cultura material do local a fim de preservar sua identidade e ao mesmo tempo dialogar com outros povos. A transformação resultante desta interação é vista na arte e na arquitetura de duas sinagogas por eles construídas que constituem um dos mais antigos testemunhos da arte judaica produzida por aqueles que viveram na Diáspora. / The Seleucid Settlement of Dura Europos constitutes an appropriate setting to analyze the process of cultural transformation in ancient colonial areas. The site, founded at the crossroad between major Eastern and Western civilizations, is a multicultural settlement that expresses the coexistence of Jews with various populations. This dissertation analyses how the Jewish group of this city used the local material culture to preserve their identity and at the same time did dialogue with other people. The transformation resulted out of this interaction is seen in the art and architecture of the two Synagogues that they built there and which constitutes one of the most ancient testimony of the Jewish art produced by those who lived in the Diaspora.

Trata-se de estudar as principais mudanças rituais e doutrinárias observadas recentemente no judaísmo em São Paulo, com ênfase nas transformações introduzidas nas sinagogas da cidade e mais pormenorizadamente na Congregação Mekor Haim. A investigação sociológica está centrada nas modificações que dizem respeito às influências entre o judaísmo asquenazita e o sefaradita, tanto entre ortodoxos e não ortodoxos. Para introduzir a questão no Brasil, a tese se detém preliminarmente nas mudanças ocorridas ao longo da história judaica. / The intention was to study the principal changes in rites and doctrine recently observed in Judaism in Sao Paulo, with emphasis on changes introduced into the city synagogues, the Mekor Haim Congregation in particular. The sociological study focuses on modifications due to influences between Askhenazite and Sephardite Judaism, and between Orthodoxy and Non-Orthodoxy. By way of introduction to the question in Brazil the thesis firstly looks at changes which have occurred throughout Jewish history.

[pt] O estudo do Grande Templo Israelita do Rio de Janeiro buscou trazer, a partir da análise do projeto arquitetural, a análise das grandes sinagogas do século XIX na Europa, que se tornarem símbolos da Emancipação Judaica ao representarem instrumentos das simbioses culturais que ocorreram no Ocidente entre o judaísmo e as culturas dominantes. Diante dos debates sobre a arte e arquitetura judaica que se ampliaram na trilha dos movimentos nacionalistas do século XIX, os edifícios sinagogais apontaram para a busca de elementos arquitetônicos que pudessem fundamentar na possível origem oriental e semita. Assim influenciando tardiamente o projeto do Grande Templo que foi elaborado somente no final da década de 1920. A forma organizacional da comunidade de imigrantes e a contratação do arquiteto italiano de influência eclética foram determinantes para a concepção com grande complexidade e singularidade em uma estrutura moderna com elementos ornamentais das sinagogas europeias que aludiam a possível origem judaica mourisca e oriental. / [en] The study of the Great Israelite Temple of Rio de Janeiro brought, from the analysis of the architectural design, the analysis of the great synagogues of the nineteenth century in Europe, which become symbols of the Jewish Emancipation as representing instruments of cultural symbioses that occurred in the West between Judaism and dominant cultures. Before the debates about art and Jewish architecture that extended the trail of the nationalist movements of the nineteenth century, the synagogue buildings pointed to the pursuit of architectural elements that could justify the possible eastern and Semitic origin. So influencing the Great Temple of the project that was prepared only at the end of the 1920s.The organizational form of the immigrant community and the hiring of Italian eclectic architect were determinant in the design with great complexity and uniqueness in a modern structure with ornamental elements of European synagogues that alluded to possible Moorish and oriental Jewish origin.
