Vasconcelos Filho, Jose Eurico de 16 January 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2019-04-05T23:09:19Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2006-01-16 / The comprehension of urban activities and phenomena is of the utmost importance for society as a whole, in particular for those agencies responsible for public administration. Such activities are characterized by their complexity and therefore their difficulty in terms of study and training. Tools must be developed in order to make studying/training for these activities feasible, in a way as to provide the means for such comprehension. In this paper, an architecture is proposed for the construction of tools geared toward study and training in urban activities: the architecture for Intelligent Tutorial Geosimulator Systems, or ITGS. ITGS contemplate a multi-agent geosimulator supported by an intelligent tutor to help the user to better understand the model studied. In order to evaluate the proposal of ITGS and to offer a tool for the public safety sector, a training system was developed the ExpertCop system focused on the current problem of urban crime. ExpertCop was developed with the aim of assisting the training of police officers in the urban activity of police resources allocation. The system implements the proposals of ITGS by using geosimulation of the process studied through a set of structured steps, in the form of a computer game, in order to enhance and motivate the student s learning process, as well as a tutorial agent offering support to the student in understanding the model proposed. Support is offered by means of explanations of the simulation s emergent behavior (macro-level) and the individual explanations of the simulated events (micro-level). The system was evaluated by applying it during a course for police officers, whereby the results obtained demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposal.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) have been drawing the attention of academics and practitioners since early 70’s. There have been a number of recent studies in support of the effectiveness of ITSs. However, it is very common that students become disengaged or bored during the learning process by using ITSs. To explicitly consider students’ motivational aspects, researchers are increasingly interested in using gamification along with ITS.However, despite providing individualized tutoring to students and some kind of support for teachers, teachers have been not considered as first-class citizens in the development of these kinds of systems. In order to contribute to the active and customized use of gamified ITS by teachers, three technical problems should be considered. First, designing ITS is very complex (i.e., take into account different theories, components, and stahekolders) and including gamification may significantly increase such complexity and variability. Second, gamified ITS features can be used depending on several elements (e.g., educational level, knowledge domain, gamification and ITS theories, etc). Thus, it is imperative to take advantage of theories and practices from both topics to reduce the design space of these systems. Third, in order to effectively aid teachers to actively use such systems, it is needed to provide a simple and usable solution for them. To deal with these problems, the main objective of this thesis is to design an authoring computational solution to provide for teachers a way to customize gamified ITS features managing the high variability of these systems and considering gamification and ITS theories/practices. To achieve this objective, we identify the variability space and represent it using an ontology-based feature modeling approach (OntoSPL). We develop an integrated ontological model (Gamified tutoring ontology) that connects evidence-supported game design elements in the e-learning domain as well as gamification theories and frameworks to existing ITS concepts. Finally, we develop an authoring solution (named AGITS) that takes into account these ontologies to aid teachers in the customization of gamified ITS features. We evaluate our contributions by conducting four empirical studies: (1) we perform a controlled experiment to compare OntoSPL against a well-known ontology-based feature modeling approach. The results suggest that our approach is more flexible and requires less time to change; (2) we evaluate the ontological integrated model by using an ontology evaluation method (FOCA) with experts from academic and industrial settings. The results suggest that our ontologies are properly targeting the knowledge representation roles; (3) we evaluate non-interactive versions of the designed authoring solution with 59 participants. The results indicate a positive attitude towards the use of the designed authoring solutions, in which participants agreed that they are ease to use, usable, simple, aesthetically appealing, have a well-perceived system support and high credibility; and (4) we also evaluate interactive versions (scratch and template) of our authoring solution with 41 teachers. The results suggest that teachers can use and reuse, with a high acceptance level, an authoring solution that includes all the complexity to design gamified ITS.

ERG-ARCH : a reinforcement learning architecture for propositionally constrained multi-agent state spaces

Anderson Viçoso de Araújo 06 October 2014 (has links)
The main goal of this work is to present an approach that ?nds an appropriate set of sequential actions for a group of cooperative agents interacting over a constrained environment. This search is considered a complex task for autonomous agents and is not possible to use default reinforcement learning algorithms to learn the adequate policy. In this thesis, a technique that deals with propositionally constrained state spaces and makes use of a Reinforcement Learning algorithm based on Markov Decision Process is proposed. A new model is also presented which formally de?nes this restricted search space. By so doing, this work aims at reducing the overall exploratory need, thus improving the performance of the learning algorithm. To constrain the state space the concept of extended reachability goals is employed. Through them it is possible to de?ne an objective to be preserved during the iteration with the environment and another that de?nes a goal state. In this cooperative environment, the information about the propositions is shared among the agents during its interaction. An architecture to solve problems in such environments is also presented. Experiments to validate the proposed algorithm were performed on different test cases and showed interesting results. A performance evaluation against standard Reinforcement Learning techniques showed that by extending autonomous learning with propositional constraints updated along the learning process can produce faster convergence to adequate policies. The best results achieved present an important reduction over execution time (34,32%) and number of iterations (67.94%). This occurs due to the early state space reduction caused by shared information on state space constraints.

In Brazil the students face difficulties in learning algebra, considered an exponent of issues related to mathematics. Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) offer the alternative of an individualized learning for students, setting in which PAT2Math contributes because it is an ITS on web for learning algebra which considers the abilities of each individual student in their education. The usage of this information about individual issues, as decision variables of different pedagogical strategies for teaching making individual learning, poses a challenge to a Tutor Module in an ITS. In the area of mathematics, the various ways of solving difficult problems make hard the inference of how sure a student is in an exercise and how much it dominates of a given content information to be inferred and stored by the Student Model of an ITS. The work proposed in this document comes to be the definition of the Student Model Agent and Tutor Agent of the system, considering the current challenge of how is the computational structure of the teaching process in an environment of that category. Due to the multi-agent architecture of the STI PAT2Math, these two modules will also be implemented as agents. The monitoring of students' characteristics, performed through their respective Student Model, are the observed variables by the Tutor Agent to teach them individually. The Tutor Agent, to achieve this individual feature, use teaching plans, adapting them in case of student error and applies a pedagogical strategy, resulting in content and exercises proposed considering the abilities of the student in question. Tutor and Student modules were designed in cognitive learning theories such as the Meaningful Learning of Ausubel, Bloom's Taxonomy, and the Theory of Instructional Design Merrill. A qualitative evaluation was performed with a group of four researchers, teachers of mathematics, with the aim of evaluating the usability and potential application in real classrooms about the built prototype. Among the data collected it can be mentioned the strong positive trend in the responses of the questionnaire, which aimed to discover the opinions of those reviewers on the quality of the prototype. Through the comments made by reviewers it can be said that the tutorial inside the prototype is well organized and of easy exploration for the student, regardless of its maturation in the mathematics, with the possibility of larger experiments as the teacher himself inserts and modifies the contents in the domain base. It was considered of interesting use the tool, because it provides a different way of learning. The evaluators considered very relevant the diversity of options in search of ways to suit all types of learning, turning in a beneficial way for the math student. It was also noted that additional to this prototype it would be the teacher observing actions of the students to get a little more information on their respective performance and improve the project as a whole.

Eliane Santiago Ramos 06 March 2009 (has links)

Students who are able to maintain attention in an activity present a better performance in school activities. The ability to focus on an activity is essential for the student to perform satisfactorily at school. Over the last two decades there has been an increase interest in studies on mindfulness and its positive effects on health, well-being and improvement of cognitive abilities. In the school context, mindfulness has shown to be a relevant technique for the improvement of the students’ attention. Recent studies show that performing mindfulness sessions provides the student with improved attention, school performance, control of emotions, and relationships with teachers and peers. Although there are also a growing number of researches that uses computational resources to encourage the practice of mindfulness, there are few works that integrate the use of mindfulness in intelligent tutors systems or in other types of learning environments. In addition, none of the works proposes a personalized training to the characteristics of the learner. The present work proposes an agent that provides exercises of mindfulness that are guided and adapted to the students’ mood and their experience in meditation. Through the data collected by the system, it is possible to select the most appropriate exercises for the student, as well to adjust the duration of the exercises. The agent aims to encourage the student to practice meditation techniques to improve attention and academic achievement and promote the general well-being of the student. As a case study, this agent was integrated to PAT2Math, an algebra intelligent tutoring system, for the evaluation with 41 students for 7 weeks. For evaluation purposes, 3 versions of the PAT2Math intelligent tutoring system were used. The first version used audios with narratives of meditation techniques without adaptation to the experience or mood presented by the student; the second version used 3 audio recordings that told the story of algebra and equations. The third and final version used 24 audio recordings with different meditation techniques and different durations so that the techniques used could be adapted to the student's experience and mood. The results of the evaluation showed that the practice of mindfulness in a guided and personalized way improves the attention of the student. However, possibly due to the duration of the experiment, no statistically significant evidence of a positive impact on student learning was found.

This research proposes the intelligent control of free time (break interval) in multi-session tutoring. The teaching strategy employs tutoring modules with the following steps: 1) video class, 2) exercise, 3) practical suggestion, 4) free time, and 5) revision exercise. As part of the learning environment, free time (step 4) can contribute to increase the knowledge retention. Based on the student performance in exercises, the proposed system uses Reinforcement Learning to control free time durations. The intelligent agent decides according to the policy that has been indicated by the Softmax method. Among the relevant points of this algorithm, it can be highlighted the optimistic initial values, the incremental implementation and the temperature adjustment (Gibbs distribution parameter) to the selection of action. Two student groups have participated of data collection. The experimental group (with intelligent control) has been compared to the control group (where decisions belong to the student). In the groups, the intelligent agent or the student determines the action that will be followed or, in more detail, if free time will be shorter, longer or maintained. In comparison, statistical data analysis have shown significant and equivalent gains in knowledge retention. However, students from experimental group have realized more accurately the role of free time as a component of the teaching strategy / Sistemas Tutores Inteligentes são programas para prover instrução personalizada a partir de técnicas de Inteligência Computacional.

Framework para sistema tutor adaptativo ao raciocínio crítico em contabilidade - STARCC / Framework for adaptive tutoring system for critical thinking in accounting - STARCC

Souza, Marcelo Cunha de 13 June 2019 (has links)
O framework STARCC, mostrou-se útil para elaboração de sistemas de apoio ao processo de ensino e aprendizagem no curso de História da Contabilidade e pesquisas futuras devem submetê-lo a testes em relação a atributos como: facilidade, utilidade e custo benefício em utilizá-lo / The development of cognitive abilities of analysis, synthesis and, evaluation, directly linked to the capacity for critical thinking, is an important objective of the educational process, for decades accounting education has been criticized for the deficiency of its graduates in the acquisition and use of these skills. Some criticisms are directly related to the technical content of the training (curriculum), others refer to the methodology applied in classrooms (pedagogy). The current scenario, of technological advances, creates an environment of constant changes in the accounting profession, being necessary that there are changes in the form and the content of the courses to follow these changes. The body doctors and researchers in Accounting are not enough to star in this change, and the use of technologies can help. Given this scenario, the present study sought to identify the extent to which adaptive tutors systems help the Accounting student in the development of critical reasoning skills, proposing a framework for the development of Adaptive Tutoring Systems for Critical Thinking in Accounting (STARCC). As a result the present study developed a method of classifying the level of critical reasoning in students of the discipline of Accounting History, based on the access logs of the teaching support system; of the processing of the natural language of the texts produced for the discipline; and the Flesch-Kincaid Index of readability of the materials produced. Analyzes show that the model classifies the students with an accuracy of 86.20% in relation to the process performed by a teacher. However, the results need to be carefully analyzed, since the model must be tested and improved in other disciplines and in another set of data so that it can be a reliable source of classification for students\' critical reasoning level. As a suggestion of future research, it is possible to compare the results of the artificial intelligence-based classification model of this research with the results of tests established in the literature, such as the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST); the Ennis-Weir Critical Thinking Essay Test (EWCTET). The STARCC framework has proved to be useful for the elaboration of support systems for the teaching and learning process in the course of Accounting History and future research should subject it to tests in relation to attributes such as ease, utility and cost benefit.

Gamificação personalizada baseada no perfil do jogador / Personalized gamification oriented by user player types

Andrade, Fernando Roberto Hebeler 24 July 2018 (has links)
Gamification is a technique that uses game design elements in non-game context, to increase users motivation and engagement and that has been gaining space in several areas such as health, marketing and also in education. However, although the interest in the technique is growing, the means for its application are still not well defined and the results obtained have been shown to be dependent on the context and the population. Several authors attribute this resultsin the results to problems in gamification design, since most projects have been using an one-size-fitsall approach, in which all users uses the same environment independent of their preferences. Given this scenario, it has been proposed that the personalized gamification can adress a larger portion of users, adapting the gamified environments to users profiles One of the approaches to personalize the gamification is to use player typologies to determine which elements are most interesting to the user. However, typologies uses stereotypes, creating constructs that still restrict the information considered during customization. Thus, in this work, we sought to investigate personalization based on the theory of motivations to engage in games, which treats the user profile as a set of different correlated motivational subcomponents, which are grouped into macrocomponents. For this, the theory was adapted to the context of the gamification and two models were elaborated the Macro-Gamification, which is related to the theory of Self-determination and to the needs of Competence, Relationship and Autonomy of the user, and the Micro-Gamification, which relates the game elements to a particular motivational subcomponent and make it available through the users interest in the subcomponent. In order to evaluate whether personalized gamification influences user engagement when compared to non-personalized gamification, the models were implemented in a virtual learning environment, prepared to dynamically create users gamification profiles and adapt the interface in real time. A case study was then carried out with N = 36, using as a domain the study of syllabaries of the Japanese language. At the end of the study, two patterns of performance in the system with a difference of 65 % participation were identified and used to segment the participants. In the less engaged segment, the non-personalized group participants showed a higer engagement than the personalized groups. However, in the segment of the most active users the group using the Micro-Gamified model, presented itself more engaged. Thus, it can not be argued that personalized gamification provides greater engagement than non-personalized gamification, although the results suggest that users who remain using the system longer have a greater engagement in the personalized approach. Finally, it is possible to affirm that the development of personalized gamified systems is still in its infancy and for this reason, in this research, besides searching for evidence on the impact of personalized gamification on user engagement, we also sought to develop tooling to facilitate the process for the members of the community in order to boost the advances of this area of research.
