A situational analysis of institutional intersectionality and violence against women in Dar es SalaamJanuary 2019 (has links)
archives@tulane.edu / Violence against women (VAW) knows no demographic boundaries, is one of the most oppressive forms of gender inequality, and is recognized by some as an impediment to the social and economic development of under-resourced communities. Tanzanian leaders’ goal of achieving middle-income status by 2025 is reviewed against the institutional policies and practices designed to address the violence women of Dar es Salaam experience and ask if VAW is a serious threat to Tanzania’s achievement of middle-income status?
This question was answered by conducting a situational analysis of the international, regional, national, and local actors and their engagement with customary and statutory laws, human rights instruments, judicial activities, donor relationships, and NGO-driven activism. Large scale events like the annual “16 Days of Activism against Violence Against Women” (16 Days) and TGNP’s bi¬annual Gender Festival provided opportunities to collect data from local activities and policy discussions for addressing VAW in Dar es Salaam. Subsequent interviews and conversations with respondents, reviews of government and I/NGO reports, data from the 2015 presidential election, and legal decisions from the High Court further augmented the initial data collection.
This research highlighted these key findings: (1) there is a dearth of research on the applicability of intersectionality methods and theory to institutions and organizations generally and in Tanzania specifically; (2) customary laws and traditions impact international and national laws beyond rural concerns and impedes progressive law
reform as it is still filtered through culture and customs; (3) VAW remains firmly entrenched in familiar, community, and political systems that were built on patriarchal (and postcolonial) foundations; and (4) efforts to achieve middle-income status continue apart from the need to address VAW and other adverse consequences of a society still influenced by customary laws and traditions derived from patriarchal systems. / 1 / M Denise Miles-Francois

How do occupational therapists practising in forensic mental health know? : a practice epistemology perspectiveCordingley, Kevin John January 2015 (has links)
My research explored the knowledge of occupational therapists practising in forensic mental health. There is no ‘gold standard’ evidence in this practice area but other forms of evidence, including experience and “intuition”, are used in practice. My research aimed to identify the knowledge formed from and used in this practice area. My research design used qualitative methodology that was informed by American pragmatist, social constructivist and post-modern theory. In particular, I used grounded theory and situational analysis to generate and to analyse the data. The practitioners were three occupational therapists working in various forensic services in one London based NHS trust. My data was generated longitudinally over eight to twelve months, where the practitioners participated in email and face-to-face interviews. The critical incident technique and the critical decision method enabled practitioners to describe and explain their knowledge about one patient with whom they were working over the interviews. The practitioners also reflected upon participating in the research. My findings demonstrated that the practitioners’ knowledge was created from practice through the interaction of three categories. First, steps of practice were structures through which knowledge was generated about the service user. Second were rules for practice where expectations had to be met. Unpredictable situations and knowledge gaps prevented meeting expectations, so new knowledge was created from practice to meet them. The third category was a blend of the practitioners’ personal and professional experiences and emotions. Practitioners created a connection with service users in order to build a therapeutic relationship, alongside creating a nuanced narrative with their service users, which helped to build empathy. In conclusion, the practitioners in my research used various forms of knowledge in practice. My thesis contributes to existing scholarship by supporting a practice epistemology approach. Thus knowledge for occupational therapy in forensic mental health is created from practice.

Food gone foul: food safety and security tensionsMartin, Wanda Leigh 18 March 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to examine how professionals and civil society members engage in food security activities that include food safety precautions and how they work across differences to support a safe and accessible food supply. The objectives are: (a) to explore tensions between those working in community food security and food safety (regulatory authority) and the source of tension; (b) to explore how people experiencing these tensions can improve the way they work together; and (c) to explore potential opportunities for enhancing health equity through food security and food safety programs. Using a case study design, I employ concept mapping and situational analysis as methods, with a complexity science framework. I have illustrated the complex motives behind food safety regulations and examined the neo-liberal agenda favouring market forces over health equity. I have argued that while there is concern for protecting the public’s health, food safety regulations are not set with a primary focus on protecting people from unsafe food, but are a vehicle for providing confidence in the market and among international trading partners, at the cost of health and welfare of small-scale producers in rural and remote communities. I am suggesting change not only in how we view and understand personal motives or worldviews of food and market forces, but also a shift on a larger scale, to change structural conditions to promote health and to encourage a moral obligation to reduce health inequities.

Salvador
