Competências do contador: um estudo empírico / Accountants\' competencies: an empirical study in Brazil

A identificação das competências do contador pode contribuir para o desenvolvimento da profissão. O objetivo principal desse estudo é verificar a existência de uma estrutura de interdependência subjacente às competências do contador, explicando-as melhor. A fundamentação teórica sobre competências está relacionada ao estudo McClelland (1973,1998), Boyatzis (1982) e Spencer e Spencer (1993). No campo profissional as referências são Hardern (1995) e Sakagami, Yoshimi e Okano (1999). Os estudos relacionados as competências do contador não estão baseados em fundamentos da psicologia ou estruturas genéricas de competências, o que é o objetivo desse trabalho. Está pesquisa está baseada no estudo de 18 competências coletadas em 24 artigos sobre as habilidades do contador que foram submetidos a 159 contadores no Brasil. O instrumento de coleta dos dados apresentou um alfa de cronbach de 0,834. A partir da análise fatorial foram formados 4 fatores: competências específicas, competências de conduta e administração, competências de gerenciamento da informação e competências de comunicação. A validação dos dados de pesquisas seguiu os passos descritos por Cone e Foster (1997). O resultado apresentou uma estrutura genérica de competências. As principais limitações desse estudo estão relacionadas as características da amostra e a falta da validação com uso de estudos comparativos e longitudinais. Os pontos para futuras pesquisas são destacar a validação dos resultados em outras amostras de contadores e a aplicação da estrutura genérica em outras corporações. / Identifying accountants\' competencies and skills may contribute for professional growth and development. The major purpose of the present study is to evaluate the possibility of utilizing, defining and creating a construct to explain the relationship between the competencies identified in field research and a possible underlying competencies and skills structure: the generic competencies and skills model for that specific professional. Theoretical background for competencies is based on McClelland (1973, 1998), Boyatzis (1982) and Spencer & Spencer (1993). Professionally, references are Hardern (1995) and Sakagami, Yoshimi and Okano (1999). Studies that focus accountants have not identified psychology models or the search for a generic model, as this study proposes to do. The present research was carried out based on the study of 18 competencies collected from 24 articles on accountants\' behavioral studies, which were then submitted to the assessment of 159 certified public accountants in Brazil. Data collecting tool showed a 0.834 Cronbach\'s alpha. Construct formation took place through factorial analysis that resulted in 4 factors: specific competency, behavioral and administrative competencies, communication and the ability to manage information. Research validation followed the steps as in Cone & Foster (1997). Research result was a generic model to explain competencies. Study limitations are associated to sampling itself, and to the lack of validation through longitudinal studies. Future research will be able to count on model validation from other samples as well as the application of the model in corporations.

Perceptions of illicit drug use and risky sexual behaviour among first year psychology students at the University of the Western Cape

Magister Psychologiae - MPsych / HIV poses considerable social and health challenges in South Africa, particularly among young people aged 15-24. Research indicates a strong link between risky sexual behaviour and alcohol and illicit drugs. In the Western Cape drug-related behaviours is a growing concern among young people because of relatively high prevalence rates of drug abuse, particularly methamphetamine. Previous South African studies have tended to focused on the link between substance use and risky sexual behaviour among commercial sex workers. The theoretical approach of this study is the information motivation behavioural skills model. Participants were selected using non-probability sampling of 279 first year students registered for Psychology I at the University of the Western Cape. This study employed a quantitative research approach using a survey design. Results: Forty-six percent of students do not believe that the use of illicit drugs has an impact on a person's sexual behavior. However, the findings also showed that only 45% of students believed that there was a difference between illicit drug users correctly using condoms when compared to non-users. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Conclusion: Prevention is our best and most effective means of decreasing risk-taking behaviours associated with HIV infection. Information is the first line of intervention that is necessary to reduce risk-taking behaviours; however prevention strategies and interventions of risk-taking behaviours should aim to increase motivation and help young people integrate information in a way that it is personally relatable. This is vital to address the inconsistencies between perceptions of risk and the realities of risk-taking behaviour. / South Africa

In our increasingly competitive world, it is critical that college graduates enter the workplace with the appropriate skills to not only survive but also grow their career. Current college graduates have not consistently acquired the skills needed for success in the workplace to learn and thrive continuously in our rapidly changing world. The Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Science must identify the specific strategies that develop best the needed skills for the success of the graduate and society The purpose of the study was to identify a land grant college of agriculture and life sciences' (LGCALS) current programmatic and classroom strategies for developing students' ability to learn and thrive continuously in our rapidly changing world and a (1) explore programmatic strategies for developing students' ability to continuously learn and thrive; (2) explore innovative instructors classroom strategies for developing students' ability to learn and thrive continuously; (3) describe graduates perceptions of career readiness as measured through the bases of competence inventory, and finally; (4) compare programmatic strategies, classroom strategies and graduates' perceptions for career readiness. A mixed methods convergent parallel design guided the research. Qualitative interviews were employed for exploring experiences using an interpretive, constructivist, and naturalistic approach for research objectives 1 and 2. A cross sectional survey design and questionnaire, Making the Match, was used to conduct the quantitative research for objective 3. The mixed methods portion of the convergent parallel design was used to frame and explore research objective 4. Findings of the study detail need for curriculum improvement in problem solving, learning, time management, creativity and change, and personal strengths. / Ph. D.

The analysis of the obtained data allowed the confirmation of the built of professional qualification in work relations, requiring from the workers effort and personal dedication to the obtainment of the necessary attributes for the maintenance and expansion of his professional trajectory in the area / Esse estudo se propõe a avaliar o desenvolvimento da qualificação profissional dos trabalhadores que atuam no comércio varejista especializado em vinhos e derivados, que mantém contato direto com o consumidor, denominados genericamente no mercado como atendentes de varejo. Smoking behaviour, risk perception and attitude to anti-smoking legislation among students at the University of the Western Cape

The study investigated three aspects related to smoking, namely, smoking behaviour, risk perception and attitudes to anti-smoking legislation. The theoretical framework of the study was the Information-Motivation-Behavioural (IMB) skills model. The study was a quantitative one, making use of a cross-sectional survey design to obtain data about the three variables of interest. Responses to statements about risk perception and attitudes to anti-smoking legislation in the questionnaire were arranged on a three-point Likert scale. The inferential statistics used were one-sample ttests and Chi-square analyses. The results showed an overall smoking prevalence of 16%, with twice as many females than males being smokers in the sample. ‘Coloured’ students in both genders had the highest smoking rate compared to all other race groups. The knowledge of the health risks of smoking were very high, however smokers had a lower perception of risk compared to non-smokers. Moreover, while there was a fair amount of support for anti-smoking legislation among smokers, smokers tended to show less support for legislation than non-smokers, especially to those parts of the legislation that affect them more directly. The results of the study indicate a clear connection between smoking behaviour and the effect it has on both risk perception as well as attitudes to anti-smoking legislation in individuals.
