The increased of muscles activity, induced for dental clenching can be considered as causing or aggravating factor of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and this activity has been exploited in a straightforward manner using electromyography and indirectly by the variation in skin surface temperature on the masticatory muscles. The occlusal splints are non-invasive methods more utilized for the treatment of TMD, particularly those from the masticatory muscles, aiming at the reduction of muscle hyperactivity. However, there are controversies regarding the establishment of their ideal thickness. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of thickness of the occlusal splints (3 mm and 6 mm) on the electrical activity and temperature of the anterior temporal and masseter muscles during dental clenching and resting, considering the asymptomatic condition of 20 individuals (10 males and 10 females) selected through the questionnaire Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC). The electromyographic data were analyzed by the software Bio EMG (Biopack - Bio-Research System) and the surface temperatures of muscle carried out with the aid of a digital infrared thermometer (ICEL TD-971) and the corresponding measures in microvolts ([V) and degrees Celsius (ºC). The results, analyzed in a 5% of significance (p <0.05), showed increased electrical activity and lowering the temperature of the anterior temporal and masseter muscles during dental clenching in relation to the rest. However there were no statistically significant differences in relation to temperature and electrical activity of masticatory muscles between conditions with and without splints, between males and females, and between the thicknesses of occlusal splints analyzed.

Physiological and clinical effects of radiofrequency-based therapy

Radha Kumaran, Binoy January 2017 (has links)
Electrophysical agents (EPA) are a fundamental element of therapy practice and are vital for the treatment of a variety of conditions. Many of these agents employ some form of electromagnetic fields (EMF), in which radiofrequency (RF) is a major component. The therapeutic effects of RF are mainly linked to their effects on pain relief and potential effects on tissue repair. Although RF across various frequency ranges has been in use, reviews have shown that the frequency ranges currently used in therapy practice have narrowed to within 30 kHz-30,000 kHz (30 MHz). The most commonly used and hence the most commonly researched are shortwave therapies (SWT) that operate at 27.12 MHz, which is presently used predominantly in its pulsed form (PSWT). In addition to SWT, devices employing significantly lower RF ranges have also been used widely despite their lack of evidence. Capacitive Resistive Monopolar Radiofrequency (CRMRF) that operates at 448 kHz is one such RF. This programme of research was designed to investigate the physiological and clinical efficacy of CRMRF delivered using the 'Indiba Activ 902' device. The project also evaluated the scope and evidence for RF-based EPAs in therapy, through a comprehensive review of literature. A total of 120 relevant clinical studies on either acute (30 studies) or chronic (90 studies) conditions were reviewed. Notable evidence was identified for chronic OA knee and acute postoperative pain and wound healing. Some evidence also exists for chronic low back pain and healing of chronic wounds. Only eight studies reported devices that employed RF outside the shortwave frequency band. In a randomised crossover laboratory study on asymptomatic adults, the effects of contrasting doses of CRMRF on skin temperature (SKT), skin blood flow (SBF), nerve conduction velocity (NCV), deep blood flow and the extensibility of tissues were examined against a placebo dose and a control condition with no treatment. The study further compared CRMRF results with that of PSWT. The results showed that high (moderately thermal) and low (sub/minimally thermal) doses of CRMRF significantly enhanced and sustained SKT (p < 0.001), while only the high dose meaningfully increased SBF (p < 0.001). High dose PSWT increased SKT marginally (p < 0.001) but did not sustain it. Further, the high and low dose CRMRF significantly enhanced blood flow volume at depth (p=0.003), while PSWT failed to show any significant impact. None of the treatments significantly affected deep blood flow velocity, tissue extensibility or NCV. These results were reproduced on a cohort of patients affected by OA knee in a randomised controlled trial (RCT), and the effects appeared more pronounced in the patients than in the asymptomatic people. More importantly, the RCT showed that a four-week high dose CRMRF treatment (eight sessions) produced statistically and clinically significant gains in pain and function associated with OA knee in the short to medium term (p < 0.001), which was also significantly more pronounced than the gains produced by a placebo, or standard care (p=0.001for pain; p=0.031 for function). The findings of this study were considered promising. It is therefore suggested that CRMRF-based treatment can potentially be used as an adjunct to current therapeutic methods to enhance the clinical outcomes. However, further studies are needed to substantiate this, and the current results will provide credible baseline data for future research.

The Effectiveness of Skin Temperature Biofeedback with versus without Cue-Controlled Training

Goldman, Mark Paul 08 1900 (has links)
This study compared biofeedback assisted cue-controlled skin temperature training with skin temperature biofeedback training in subjects attempting to raise the digital skin temperature of their dominant hand. In addition to classification according to training, the subjects were also divided into two diagnostic groups. One group was composed of subjects with cold hands and Raynaud's disease while the other group consisted of nonRaynaud's disease cold handed subjects. The treatment and diagnostic groups were compared along the dimensions of amount of posttreatment digital skin temperature change and degree of generalization of digital skin temperature control to a cold room challenge task.

Avaliação da influência do sombreamento artificial no desenvolvimento de novilhas leiteiras em pastagens / Evaluation of the influence of artificial shade on dairy heifer development in pasture

Maristela Neves da Conceição 03 November 2008 (has links)
The objective of the present study was to evaluate and quantify the effect of artificial shade given by different types of roofing materials on the physiology, behavior and development of dairy heifers in a pasture environment. The present study took place from January 8, 2007 to April 30, 2007. The experimental area was divided into 16 equal, adjacent plots with 84 m2. Three roofing treatments (fiber-cement roofing tiles without amianthus, galvanized roofing tiles and 80% polypropylene screen) were compared to a control (no shade). Shelter structures had no lateral walls and measured 2m x 4m x 4m height (4m² shaded per animal). Animals consisted of 16 Holstein heifers and 16 Holstein x Jersey heifers with initial age and weight being 17.2 ± 5.6 months and 265.3 ± 66.9 kg, respectively. Animals were equally distributed among the treatments according to weight and age. At night, heifers were kept in fields with Pennisetum purpureum, also known as elephant grass. After 9:00 am, animals were taken to the experimental plots. Black globe thermometer temperature (tbg) was measured using a mini-datalogger connected to a black globe. Values were then used to calculate Radiant Thermic Load (RTL) and Black Globe Humidity Index (BGHI) of each plot. Meteorological variables were obtained from the agricultural-meteorological post at the ESALQ/USP. Respiration rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT) and skin temperature (ST) were registered weekly. Behavioral observations were recorded every other day using the focal method. Animals were weighed monthly. Environmental conditions during the research period were characterized as stressful for the heifers. Physical analysis of the material (tbg, RTL and BGHI) indicated the roofing treatments to be significantly different (P<0.05), with the fiber-cement roofing tiles without amianthus to be the most comfortable regarding temperature, followed by the galvanized roofing tiles and the 80% polypropylene screens. Respiration rate was lower under the fiber-cement roofing tiles (P<0.05) and similar under the galvanized tiles and polypropylene screen (P>0.05). RR values were lower under the fiber-cement tiles (P<0.05) and similar under the galvanized roofing tiles and polypropylene screen (P>0.05). There were no significant differences in RT values among treatments; however, a difference was found among data collection times. Concerning ST, fiber-cement tiles were significantly different from the control (P<0.05). On the other hand, there were no significant differences regarding ST among the other treatments (P>0.05). RR presented the most immediate response to environmental alterations. RT presented correlation with RR and ST. No behavioral alterations were observed among the treatments. Daily behavior followed known bovine patterns. Weight gain was not altered by the treatments. A cost analysis indicated fibercement roofing tiles to be better for shelter construction. The present study also indicated improved heifer thermal well-being; however, no effective gains could be determined from shade use.

Swedish operating room nurses preventive interventions to reduce bacterial growth, surgical site infections, and increase comfort in patients undergoing surgery

Wistrand, Camilla January 2017 (has links)
Surgical site infection is a major postoperative complication that causes patient suffering and is costly for society. The general aim of this thesis was to test and describe interventions performed by operating room (OR) nurses to prevent bacterial growth in surgical patients, with the intent to prevent surgical site infections (SSIs) whilst increase patients comfort. In studies I and II, 220 pacemaker patients were tested to compare pre-heated skin disinfection with room-temperature skin disinfection regard-ing bacterial growth, skin temperature and patient experience. Preheated skin disinfection was not less effective compared to room-temperature skin disinfection in reducing bacterial growth after skin disinfection and there were no differences regarding SSIs three month postoperatively. Preheated skin disinfection reduces skin heat loss and was perceived as more pleas-ant compared to room-temperature skin disinfection. In study III, 12 OR nurses were examined regarding bacterial growth on their hands and at the sterile glove cuff end after surgical hand disinfec-tion and again after wearing sterile surgical gloves during surgery. They were compared with a control group of 13 non-health care workers. OR nurses’ hands had higher amounts of bacterial growth at two of three culture sites after surgical hand disinfection compared with the control group, and the bacterial growth increased in both groups with time during surgery. There seems to be a risk of bacterial growth at the glove cuff end during surgery, involving the same type of bacteria as isolated from the hands. In study IV, 890 OR nurses answered an online questionnaire describ-ing OR nurses interventions guided by national guidelines to reduce SSIs, such as preparation of the patient skin, patient temperature, and OR ma-terials used. The proportion of the OR nurses who complied with the national guidelines preventive interventions was high: skin disinfection solution (93.5%), drapes (97.4%) and gowns (83.8%), and double gloves (73%). However, when guidelines were lacking the interventions differed.

THE EFFECTS OF OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT ON COMMON FEMORAL ARTERY BLOOD FLOW AND SKIN TEMPERATURE IN SPINAL CORD INJURED AND ABLE-BODIED INDIVIDUALS

Murray, David J.G. 04 1900 (has links)
<p><h1>ABSTRACT</h1> <h1>Individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) are prone to significant alterations in vascular structure and function. This study was designed to examine the effects of osteopathic treatment on mean leg (MLBF) blood flow and skin temperature in the lower extremities of individuals with chronic SCI compared to able-bodied (AB) individuals. Methods: Nine individuals (age 44 ± 17.5 years) with a chronic SCI (C6-T12; AIS A-B; 3.7 ± 4.6 years post-injury) and six AB individuals (38.3 ± 9.7 years) participated. The protocol consisted of 1 interview session and 3 osteopathic treatment sessions. Doppler ultrasound measured the diameter and mean blood velocity in the CFA before (Pre) and after (Post) each session. Skin temperatures were measured using skin thermistors at three different sites on the left leg. Change scores were calculated and measured as post-treatment minus pre-treatment. Results: A two-way ANOVA revealed an increase in flow of 16±2 ml/min within the SCI group and a decrease in flow of 25±2 ml/min in the AB group (p = 0.04). There was also a smaller reduction in skin temperature in individuals within the SCI versus AB (left thigh: SCI, -0.5±0.2° C; AB, -1.2±0.2°C, p(left foot: SCI, -0.1±0.4°C; AB, -1.8±0.4°C, pAll treatments resulted in small increases in MLBF in the SCI group versus small decreases in the able-bodied group and smaller skin temperature decreases in the SCI versus the decreases in the AB group, potentially indicating reduced skin temperature reactivity. These findings emphasize the potential for different physiological responses to interventions in individuals with SCI compared to AB individuals.</h1></p> / Master of Science in Kinesiology

Altitude- and Sex-Specific Variation in Roosting Ecology and Thermoregulation of <em>Myotis lucifugus</em> in Yellowstone National Park

Slusher, Alexandra C. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Fifty-nine female and six male little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) were radio-tagged during the summers of 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 in Yellowstone National Park. The grand models for daily maximum skin temperature (F98,154 = 1.55, P = 0.007), daily minimum skin temperature (F98,154 = 1.33, P = 0.05), and daily variation in skin temperature (F98,154 = 1.56, P = 0.006) were significant across roost type and reproductive condition class for adult females. Roosts were classified into Types A (warmest roosts), B (roosts with largest daily temperature variance), and C (stable and cool roosts) depending on differences in mean maximum, minimum, and variance in temperatures per day (P < 0.001). A total of 347 torpor bouts were recorded from 38 females across the 2012 to 2015 summer seasons. Bats across different reproductive classes and roost types used torpor at different hours of the day. My research suggests that adult female little brown myotis at high elevations in the Park extensively use and rely on building structures for roosting sites during the reproductive season, whereas males used primarily natural roosts.

Kardiovaskulární DRIFT / Cardiovascular DRIFT

Kypúsová, Monika January 2013 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular drift is a phenomenon, which appears after 10 - 20 minutes of prolonged moderate - intensity exercise (50 - 75% VO2max). CVD appears in a neutral or hot environment. It is characterized by a decline in stroke volume and systemic mean arterial pressures and a parallel increase in heart rate. Cardiac output is maintained nearly constant. The theory of CVD shows increase of core temperature and sympathetic nervous system as cause of increase of heart rate. GOALS: The goal of this thesis was find out the change of heart rate depending on time. Then we found out changes of oral, tympanic, axillary, vaginal and superficial skin temperature. We found out correlation between vaginal temperature and heart rate and then between skin temperature and vaginal temperature. METHODS: Blood pressure, heart rate, oral, tympanic, axillary, vaginal and superficial skin temperature were measured during 60 minutes of cycling (intensity 55% VO2max; 1,99 ± 0,14 W/kg). It was measured at 13 women (25,5 ± 1,3 years; 69,1 ± 7,7 kg). RESULTS and CONCLUSION: There was statistically significant increase of heart rate compared to value from 10. minute. during. There was increase of tympanic temperature compared to value from 10. minute only at the end of exercise. There was significant increase of vaginal and...
