Social knowledge and programme structure in representations of television charactersLivingstone, Sonia M. January 1987 (has links)
It was argued that the social psychology of person perception, mass communications and cultural studies can be related to viewers' representations of television characters. Mass communications needs to incorporate viewers' interpretations and programme structure. Social cognition could satisfy the former need and cultural studies the latter. A literature review showed little research on viewers' interpretations of television programmes. There is a considerable body of research on person perception, gender stereotypes, the effects of viewing and programme structure. A study of viewers' accounts of viewing soap opera showed that they become involved with the characters and find the programmes realistic. Soap opera plays an important role in their lives. Viewers' representations of soap opera characters were examined using multidimensional scaling. This revealed stable, replicable character representations for Dallas, Coronation Street and EastEnders. The representations were compared with the oppositions which structure the programmes, Implicit Personality Theory and Gender Schema Theory. Dallas characters were represented by themes of morality and power/activity. Power was correlated with gender, with some counter-stereotypic females. Coronation Street characters were organised around morality/potency, gender (matriarchal) and approach to life. This related to person prototypes and contrasted with interaction patterns between characters. EastEnders characters were represented by themes of morality/power, gender and approach to life/centrality. Free descriptions validated the attribute ratings and showed further features of the representation. No socio-structural group differences in representation were found. Viewers' character representations were a constructive integration of programme structure and social knowledge. The application of abstract knowledge to a structured domain was discussed. Textual analysis of a narrative identified the 'role of the reader' and textual openness. This was related to stereotypes, narrative expectancies, myth and character representation. Distinct types of divergence in viewers' interpretations of narrative were discovered. Further, a narrative containing two readings was interpreted in four distinct ways by viewers, depending on their perceived relationships with characters. The conclusions and limitations of the research were discussed. Implications for person perception, stereotyping and textual analysis were examined. A taxonomy of factors relating to the interpretation and representation of television drama was presented.

Trends in Forest Soil Acidity : A GAM Based Approach with Application on Swedish Forest Soil Inventory DataBetnér, Staffan January 2018 (has links)
The acidification of soils has been a continuous process since at least the beginning of the 20th century. Therefore, an inquiry of how and when the soil pH levels have changed is relevant to gain better understanding of this process. The aim of this thesis is to study the average national soil pH level over time in Sweden and the local spatial differences within Sweden over time. With data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory, soil pH surfaces are estimated for each surveyed year together with the national average soil pH using a generalized additive modeling approach with one model for each pair of consecutive years. A decreasing trend in average national level soil pH was found together with some very weak evidence of year-to-year differences in the spatial structure of soil pH.

Análise semiótica do roteiro da telenovela Cheias de CharmeSevero, Simone Dorneles January 2017 (has links)
Esta Dissertação analisa o roteiro que gerou a telenovela Cheias de Charme (TV Globo – 2012) pela Teoria Semiótica de Algirdas Julien Greimas (1970), com ênfase no percurso gerativo de sentido, e pela vertente Sociossemiótica de Erik Landowski (1992). Também são utilizados conceitos de produção audiovisual de Doc Comparato (2009), Flavio de Campos (2007), Luiz Carlos Maciel (2003) e Marcos Rey (1997). O texto é dividido em três partes, representando o estado inicial (roteiro 1), transformacional (roteiro 72, meio do texto) e final (roteiro 143, último roteiro) das empregadas domésticas Maria da Penha, Maria do Rosário e Maria Aparecida em oposição a suas patroas Chayene, Lygia Ortega e Sônia Sarmento. Após, através do percurso gerativo de produção de sentido, da Teoria Semiótica Greimasiana, descrevem-se os elementos dos níveis fundamental (relações axiológicas de contrariedade, contradição e complementaridade), narrativo (programas narrativos e modalizações) e discursivo (figuras e temas) do texto. A análise permite estabelecer, através de uma teoria de linguagem, uma relação com aspectos socioculturais e políticos da sociedade brasileira para o impacto na aprovação do Projeto de Emenda Constitucional n° 66/2012 – Lei dos Empregados Domésticos do Brasil. Conclui-se que o roteiro de telenovela brasileira se constitui como construtor e circulador de significados socioculturais do Brasil e que a Teoria Semiótica e a sua vertente teórica Sociossemiótica são adequadas para o acesso a esse texto. / This dissertation analyzes the script that generated the soap opera Cheias de Charme by Rede Globo (2012) based on the Semiotic Theory of Algirdas Julien Greimas (1970), with emphasis on the generative path of meaning and the Sociosemiotic view of Erik Landowski (1992). Concepts of audiovisual production are also discussed based on Doc Comparato (2009), Flavio de Campos (2007), Luiz Carlos Maciel (2003) and Marcos Rey (1997) theory. For this, the text is divided in three parts representing the initial state (script 1), the transformational state (script 72, middle of the text) and the final state (script 143, last part of the text) of the housemaids Maria da Penha, Maria do Rosário and Maria Aparecida in opposition to their bosses Chayene, Lygia Ortega and Sônia Sarmento. Then, through the generative path of meaning production of the Greimasian Semiotic Theory, the elements of the fundamental (axiological relations of contrariety, contradiction and complementarity), narrative (narrative programs and modalizations) and discursive (figures and themes) levels of the text are described. The analysis allowed to establish, through a theory of language, a link of sociocultural and political aspects of Brazilian society and their impact on the approval of the Constitutional Amendment Project n ° 66/2012 – Law of the Domestic Employees in Brazil. It is concluded that the Brazilian soap opera script constitutes a constructor and circulator of sociocultural meanings of Brazil and that the Semiotic Theory and its Sociosemiotic line are suitable to access this textual genre.

Previous issue date: 2015-11-06 / This research’s thematic field is the Period Soap Opera with a look at the scenographical or recreated city, aiming to work with audio-visual tools and its possibilities of contribution to the city’s history. Therefore, Lado a Lado was elected the research's subject , written by João Ximenes Braga and Cláudia Lage, screened in 2012 - 2013 on Globo Television Network, whose historical construct of Rio de Janeiro at the beggining of the 20th century fits the melodrama. From this viewpoint, it is understood that although the soap opera Lado a Lado is a fictional work freely, inspired in specific historical events on that period, represents in a fictional fashion, the city of Rio de Janeiro during the urban process of modernization and social transformation. Together with the comprehension of language representation in an addressed space in and an specific time, utilized magnetic means to appropriate from the real city's historical construct, read and redefined by a different language: the soap opera. It is going to be questioned the way the soap opera appropriated from such historical context, recreating the heading towards modernity image of the city, which can also be seen as a mean of delivering information about the country's history to the general population. / O campo temático desta pesquisa é a telenovela de época com olhares para a cidade cenográfica ou a cidade recriada, visando trabalhar com a ferramenta audiovisual e suas possibilidades de contribuir para a história da cidade. Para tanto, elegeu-se como objeto de estudo a telenovela Lado a Lado, escrita por João Ximenes Braga e Cláudia Lage, exibida em 2012 – 2013 pela rede Globo de televisão, cujo construto histórico do Rio de Janeiro do início do século XX serve ao melodrama. Nesse sentido, partiu-se do pressuposto de que, embora a telenovela Lado a Lado seja uma obra de ficção livremente inspirada em determinados fatos históricos do início do século XX, representou, de forma ficcional, a cidade do Rio de Janeiro no processo de modernização urbana e de transformação social. Juntamente com a compreensão da linguagem de representação do espaço abordado num determinado tempo específico, utilizou os meios imagéticos para se apropriar do construto histórico de uma cidade real, lida e resignificada por outra linguagem: a teledramaturgia. Será questionada a maneira que a novela se apropriou de tal contexto histórico, (re)criando a imagem da cidade em direção à modernidade, podendo ser entendida como um meio de levar, à população em geral, informação sobre a história da cidade.
