Intermountain Power Project: Intermountain-Adelanto Bipole I Transmission Line California: Ethnographic (Native American) Resources

Bean, Lowell John, Stoffle, Richard W., Vane, Sylvia Brakke, Young, Jackson 30 June 1982 (has links)
This study was conducted by Cultural Systems Research, Incorporated (CSRI) for Applied Conservation Technology, Incorporated (ACT). This study has been conducted to determine which Native American groups traditionally used the area through which the Intermountain Power Agency (IPA) proposes to construct the California portion of the Intermountain -Adelanto Bipole Transmission Line, a component of the Intermountain Power Project (IPP); to determine what value these groups place on cultural resources which might be disturbed by the construction of the transmission line and associated structures; and to convey their recommendations for the mitigation of these impacts. The results of the study are intended to enable the IPA to comply with requirements of various state and federal agencies with respect to this component of the IPP. The study area for this project was an area measuring 100 feet (30 m) on either side of the center line of the right -of -way for the proposed transmission line that was proposed to run from the California- Nevada border to the vicinity of Victorville, California. The Native American groups who traditionally used the area through which the proposed IPP right -of -way would pass include the Southern Paiute, the Mojave, the Vanyume /Serrano, and the Kawaiisu. Members of various other groups have travelled through the area, and used it from time to time.

Contemporary opera as relevant and effective socio-political critique : two case studies / Frances Catherine Laycock

Laycock, Frances Catherine January 2007 (has links)
The validity of the traditional arts in contemporary society is often questioned by the wider public. This dissertation argues that one of the ways in which the arts attain value is through their function as political activism. In order to do so, it investigates the characteristics of resistance art. This is followed by a discussion of contemporary opera. While this genre is a minority interest when compared to popular music forms, it is, nevertheless, a form of resistance art that has the potential to fulfill a social and political function. The dissertation focuses on two case studies: John Adam's The Death of Klinghoffer (1990) and Paul Ruders's The Handmaid's Tale (2000), and concludes that contemporary opera can be relevant and effective socio-political critique. / Thesis (M.Mus.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

DEVELOPMENT OF SCALABLE STAKEHOLDER-NEEDS METRICS APPLIED IN ECONOMIC INPUT-OUTPUT SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT MODELS

Justin S Richter (6636236) 14 May 2019 (has links)
<div>In the last half century, much research effort has gone into identifying the causes and effects of societal burdens. Industrial activity may arguably be the most widely responsible cause, but the effects, or social impacts (SIs), resulting from industrial activity are typically considered externalities and not evaluated alongside economic performance of industries. It is clear however that people are fundamental to the progress and development of economies. Understanding how people are affected by economies, and in particular industrial economic activity, starts with recognizing that impacts on people can no longer be considered externalities. The coordinating lack of understanding of social performance, i.e., how stakeholder needs are impacted by industrial production, limits the capacity of decision makers to make fully informed choices. A </div><div>multidisciplinary perspective is needed to address this gap in understanding. The new approach, economic input-output social impact assessment, integrates economic production with social impacts and is further demonstrated to provide a measurable path forward to evaluate the social performance of industries. It is shown that changes in industrial activity, e.g., growth, in the U.S. will have a directly related and predictable change in social impact.</div>

SROI as a Method for Evaluation Research: Understanding Merits and Limitations

Maier, Florentine, Schober, Christian, Simsa, Ruth, Millner, Reinhard 10 1900 (has links) (PDF)
NPOs and their funders are increasingly drawn to the Social Return on Investment (SROI) method to evaluate the social impact of programs, organizations or organization networks. While many claims about the benefits of SROI have been expressed, various points of criticism have also been raised. On the basis of both current research and our own experience in conducting SROI analyses, we develop a comprehensive assessment of this method, which is structured along two dimensions: the observer's paradigmatic perspective, on the one hand, and positive or negative valuation, on the other. We identify two major merits: SROI analysis can provide legitimacy to NPOs or their funders, and it can assist in allocating resources. We identify limitations from three perspectives: From an interpretative-sociological perspective, criticism of commensuration and utilitarianism calls the method as a whole into question. From a technical-instrumental perspective, there are a number of difficulties that could however be overcome as the method matures. From an intermediary perspective, a number of limitations become apparent that, while inherent to SROI analysis, are no reason for abandoning it, as long as they are thoroughly understood. We conclude by providing suggestions for the responsible use of SROI analysis.

Interações entre negócios de impacto social e setor público no Brasil: estudo de três casos / Interaction between social impact businesses and the public sector in Brazil: a three-case study

Mathias, Ana Luiza Terra Costa 02 May 2018 (has links)
In the growing academic production on social impact businesses in Brazil, it is possible to verify a gap: there are not significant numbers of studies that analyze the interactions between social impact businesses and the public sector, although at the same time it is possible to observe, in recent practice, several cases in which this interaction has taken place. At the same time, when analyzing the literature on cross-sector partnerships, it is observed that many studies analyze partnerships involving both the public sector and the private sector and / or NGOs, but we do not find studies that go deeper into partnerships between the public sector and social impact businesses. Based on these findings, this research seeks to shed light on this recent and not yet deeply studied phenomenon: the partnership relationships that have arisen between social impact businesses and the public sector in the country. A case-study of instrumental type (STAKE, 2006) is adopted as a method, focusing on three recent occurrences of this type of interaction. The analysis highlights the processes of formation and implementation of this specific type of partnerships, their main results and challenges, and identifies themes to be explored from the findings of this study

No. of bitstreams: 1 Valmiene Florindo.pdf: 6566533 bytes, checksum: ae83e38f7bd992f4e50c9bb204fa8bcf (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-22 / FAPEMA / The Plpt has been created to be a vector of development and articulating public policies for this purpose. In this sense, this work sought to identify the conditions and determinants of social impacts from the implementation of the Luz para Todos Program in the living conditions of the elderly in the Baixo-Amazonas Region. The purpose of the evaluation was to analyze the construction of the electrification policy in Brazil and Amazonas and verify dimensions that constitute the integrality of the living conditions of the elderly that could be impacted by the actions of rural electrification. The research followed the impact assessment methodology. A bibliographical, documentary and field research product had as its locus of study three rural communities: Santa Tereza do Matupiri, São Benedito and Maranhão Community, located in the municipalities of Barreirinha, Boa Vista do Ramos and Parintins, in the Amazonas State. The research pointed out that the Brazilian energy matrix is based on the conception of developmentalist ideology and that in the Amazon State, the expansion of the energy sector was identified with the process of modernization of cities and, later on, for productive and industrial use. As for the changes in the communities surveyed, education was a point of unanimity for the elderly, since electricity offered the opportunity of technological courses. Regarding production, there were no drastic changes to the increase. As for family and community coexistence, the rural electrification contributed to increase the nocturnal frequency activities. Regarding the level of consumption, access to electric power made it possible to purchase electrical and electronic appliances. Regarding the impacts of rural electrification on aging, we learn about that electricity: facilitates accessibility in spaces; Gives access to piped water; Brings well-being and comfort; Assists in food storage; The residential lighting favors the reduction of elderly falls (domestic accidents) and the acquisition of household appliances facilitates the daily activities. In this sense, rural electrification despite paradoxes has brought benefits to the elderly and changes in their living conditions have changed significantly. It was verified in the research that after the rural electrification in the communities surveyed, there was only the growth of the demand for electric energy and the energy supply per se, it did not only result in local development, because this depends an objective articulation with other policies.

How large companies develop hybrid capabilities with the bottom of the pyramid: explaining how dynamic capabilities work

Silva, Diogo Palheta Nery da 28 March 2019 (has links)
The announcement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals has strengthened the global organizational hybridization movement in large corporations in which corporations are including social and environmental goals in their strategic agendas. In this context, this research intends to answer the question: how do large companies develop hybrid capabilities with the base of the pyramid? To answer this research question, I adopted the theoretical lens of the Dynamic Capabilities. This concept aims to explain how organizations create and change resources and capabilities. The Dynamic Capabilities literature is extensive and robust; however, this concept still needs to be refined to be able to satisfactorily explains how organizations develop operational capabilities, such as hybrid capabilities. Thus, I sought to develop the concept of Dynamic Capabilities in the unusual context in which large companies face when developing hybrid capabilities with the base of the pyramid. Thus this thesis is a theory building research. Also, I employed a qualitative process research design. I selected three cases of large companies that are developing hybrid initiatives with the low-income population in Brazil. To accomplish this thesis, it was necessary to develop a qualitative research methodology that combines methods of Positivist and Interpretative origin. In a first phase, I wrote three extensive case studies to describe the development of hybrid initiatives. In a second phase, I employed a cross case analysis. Then I proposed two theoretical models about how the large companies develop hybrid capacities with the base of the pyramid using their Dynamic Capacities. In the first theoretical model, I sought to simplify previous theorizations of the concept of Dynamic Capabilities to analyze the functioning of Dynamic Capabilities using common elements to any organization: processes, learning and social relations. In the second theoretical model, I explained the results found in previous analyzes. In addition, I explained how Dynamic Capabilities work by combining two metatheories of organizational change (Van de Ven & Poole, 1995; Weick & Quinn, 1999). Therefore, the main theoretical contribution of this thesis was the discovery of four change motors (Cycle of Life, Teleology, Dialectic and Evolutionary) and two rhythms of change (Episodic and Continuous) that explain how Dynamic Capabilities work. In addition to these theoretical contributions, I created the concepts of hybrid capabilities and turning point in organizational hybridization. I also proposed practical recommendations for managers working on hybrid initiatives of large companies such as Inclusive Business and Shared Value.

An evaluation of selected social impacts of an urban development program in Bandung, West Java Province, Indonesia

Mulyana, Atang, n/a January 1990 (has links)
An evaluation was undertaken of four selected social impacts of the Integrated Urban Infrastructure Development Program (IUIDP) on the community in three kelurahans in Western Java (Jamika, Warung Muncang, and Maleber), with particular emphasis on low income people, using Social Impact Assessment methods. The impacts studied were changes in employment, household income, land and rental values. The evaluation suggests that the execution of the IUIDP generated beneficial as well as adverse effects. The beneficial effects include that the program created employment for several residents in the study areas and generally improved the household income of the residents concerned. Also some benefits have accrued to a number of land owners as the value of their land increased. Other benefits identified include improved access, water supply, sewerage and garbage services. The adverse effects of the IUIDP include that the government did not provide either compensation (for those who had to sacrifice their land) or reconstruction assistance (for those who had to cut back their property for access routes). Another adverse effect was experienced by tenants who found their rent increased. There was a widely held perception among the residents surveyed that, on balance, the project had been beneficial.
