The impact of computer usage on scholarly communication among academic social scientistsCosta, Sely Maria de Souza January 1999 (has links)
The study aims to see whether there are differences in the nature and patterns of computer usage for communicating research between disciplines in the social sciences in Brazil and, if so, whether they can be related to factors which can affect the process of communication. The theory embedded in the research model states that pressures that accompany the introduction of information technologies into a university environment are significant factors in the use of such technologies. These pressures produce differences in the communication process itself. Furthermore, there may also be a relationship between individual factors and the use of IT for communication. The research data were collected via a survey using two instruments. Firstly, mailed questionnaires were sent to 760 academic researchers in sociology and economics in Brazil, working in post-graduate programmes. A response rate of 64.1 percent was achieved. Secondly, 36 interviews were carried out with a sample of the most productive researchers in the two subjects studied. The interview sample included both respondents and non-respondents to the questionnaire. A small sample of 1I British academic researchers was included in the interview survey, in order to allow comparisons and see whether Brazilian academics lag behind IT front-runners. Data collected revealed that there is an impact of computer usage on the scholarly communication process, especially in terms of informal communication. Such an impact can be related to changes in the social interactions that underlie knowledge creation among researchers, and also relates to differences in patterns and processes of computer usage between the chosen disciplines. Formal communication has experienced a gradually growing impact by electronic media on the well-established print environment, with the likely co-existence of the two media for some time to come. The results obtained showed that Brazilian researchers do not lag behind the British ones. Not many differences, but most similarities were found between economists and sociologists in both Brazil and the UK.

O presente trabalho elabora uma biografia coletiva dos professores e alunos da Universidade de São Paulo, que, em 1958, começaram a ler O Capital de Karl Marx. Contrastadas as leituras esparsas anteriores e posteriores à constituição desse grupo, esta se caracteriza pela convergência de esforços de áreas diferentes, pela insubordinação à disciplina partidária e às vulgatas dela decorrentes pari passu a adesão e defesa da disciplina scholar; pela ênfase em questões de método e pendor teórico, mobilizadas, segundo a área de cada um dos participantes, para a elaboração de teses que dialogam entre si. A reconstituição das linhas de força condicionantes dessa inovação pressupõe acompanhar percursos de mobilidade social, filiações magistrais, tensões geracionais, gradiente de autonomização, profissionalização e diferenciação disciplinar. A cristalização das relações horizontais com os amigos de seminário; e verticais com os catedráticos a que estão ligados encontra-se em seus doutoramentos. Para que a análise realçasse tais dimensões, refizemos o percurso dos seminaristas, da graduação ao doutorado, acompanhando rotações institucionais que marcaram o itinerário coletivo. O exame se concentra mais detidamente entre o início das atividades e a publicação da última tese oriunda desses estudos (1958-1978). / The present work develops a group biography of the professors and students from the University of São Paulo which started to read Karl Marxs Capital. Having contrasted the sparse readings made before and after the constitution of this group, this study is characterized by the converging of endeavors from different areas, by the insubordination to the party discipline and to the vulgates due to them simultaneously to the adhesion and support of the scholar discipline, by the emphasis in questions of method and theoretical penchant, mobilized, according to the area of each of the participants, to the elaboration of thesis which dialogue among themselves. The reconstitution of the conditioning lines of force of this innovation assumes following trajectory of social mobility, magisterial affiliations, generational tensions, gradient of empowerment, professionalization and discipline differentiation. The crystallization of horizontal relations with friends from the seminar; and verticals with the professor who they are connected with is present in their doctorate works. In order to enhance the analysis of such dimensions, the trajectory of the seminar students was retaken, from the undergraduate course to the doctorate, following institutional rotations which marked the group itinerary. The examination concentrates itself more accurately between the beginning of the activities and the publishing of the last thesis originated from these studies (1958-1978).

This study aimed to profile social science researchers' experiences of ethically challenging incidents and ethics review and to consider these experiences in terms of the two institutions from which participants were selected. Data was gathered by means of an email survey sent to social science researchers working in both a university and a research organisation. The findings reveal that ethically challenging incidents involving privacy, confidentiality and anonymity, harm, beneficence, poor science, role conflict, informed consent, recruitment of participants and publication were encountered frequently by social science researchers. While respondents reported both positive and negative experiences of ethics review, researchers at the university reported significantly more ethically challenging incidents and negative experiences of ethics review than did researchers from the research organisation. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007.

Aquele que realiza esse movimento - o cientista social - o faz com o intuito de estudar diversos aspectos da sociedade em busca de compreender o mundo em que vivemos e também entender como aqui chegamos. A profissão do cientista social, portanto, está marcada por um processo reflexivo constante, apoiada nas teorias de sociologia, antropologia e ciência política. Mas tal movimento também acontece entre áreas de ciências humanas, numa troca interdisciplinar. O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar como se realiza o movimento do pensar do cientista social quando o mesmo está localizado em outra área, exercendo sua atividade profissional em pesquisa de mercado: como surgiu e se desenvolveu esta profissionalização no Brasil? Qual a percepção do cientista social a respeito de sua atuação dentro da área de pesquisa de mercado? Como esta prática profissional está sendo exercida atualmente? Pretende-se discutir o escopo desta profissão em uma atividade não-acadêmica voltada ao mercado, tendo como pano de fundo o contexto de uma sociedade e cultura denominadas de consumo. Qual o uso social das ciências sociais que se faz fora da universidade e que tipo de sociologia se consegue fazer fora do meio acadêmico? Diante disso, há então a possibilidade de realizar uma abordagem reflexiva por parte do cientista social e um exame crítico do papel das ciências sociais, seus usos e caminhos futuros. Conhecer este grupo de cientistas sociais, sua identidade e o significado social do que produzem é o objetivo deste trabalho, dando, então, voz ao pensamento dos mesmos. / The movement of thought is constantly present in the social sciences. The person who performs this move - the social scientist - studies various aspects of society in search of understanding the world we live in and also to understand how we got here. The social scientist's profession, therefore, is marked by a constant process of reflection, based on the theories of sociology, anthropology and political science. But this movement also occurs between areas of humanities, an interdisciplinary exchange. The aim of this study is to investigate how the movement of thought is realized when it is located in another area, professionally active in market research: how it emerged and developed this professionalization in Brazil? What is the perception of the social scientist about his activities within the area of market research? How this practice is being exercised today? It is intended to discuss the scope of this profession in a non-academic activity focused on the market, with the background of the context of a society and culture called consumption. What is the social use of social science that is done outside the university and what kind of sociology can be done outside of academia? Then there is the possibility of a reflective approach by the social scientist and a critical examination of the role of social sciences, their uses and future directions. Knowing this group of social scientists, their identity and the social significance of what they produce is the objective of this work, giving a voice to the thought of the social scientists.

En la actualidad, la constante movilidad geográfica y subsiguiente instalación de inmigrantes pobres en países receptores da lugar a procesos de producción de otros estigmatizados, disponibles para el trabajo de la imaginación o la manipulación. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el papel que han tenido ciertos especialistas en ciencias sociales, así como el uso de sus producciones y saberes, en el marco de una demanda social de representaciones y visiones sobre los fenómenos migratorios limítrofes generada en la Argentina durante los años noventa. / Nowadays, the constant and permanent geographic mobility and the settling of poor migrants gives rise to production processes of other stigmatized people who are available for the work of the imagination or of manipulation. The objective of this paper is to analyze the role that certain specialists in social sciences have had and the use of their output and knowledge, in the frame of a social demand of representations and visions of the migratory phenomenon of the borders, generated in Argentina during the nineties.
