The socioeconomic context of Africa¿s vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.

Freedman, J., Poku, Nana K. January 2005 (has links)
No / Although the proximate cause of Africa¿s AIDS crisis is HIV, the underlining societal causes are much broader and familiar. Across the continent, poverty structures not only the contours of the pandemic but also the outcome once an individual is infected with HIV. Thus, until poverty is reduced there will be little progress with either reducing transmission of the virus or creating an enhanced capacity to cope with its socioeconomic consequences. It follows that sustained human development is an essential precondition for any effective response to the pandemic in Africa.

“The children think that if their parents manage to live like this, they can too.” : Children´s learning difficulties in Banco da Vitória/Ilhéus, Brazil.

Gallinera, Julmah January 2013 (has links)
Many scholars have argued that the education system in Brazil tends to strengthen the pattern that reproduces inequalities, where families with higher income are likely to be the ones holding the majority in education in Brazil. The focus lies in ten interviewees, thereof five parents/caregivers and five professionals that works/worked with the children who were interviewed in Banco da Vitória /Ilhéus, south of Bahia, Brazil 2012. This qualitative study intends to analyse the underlying social causes from a sociological perspective in how the informants reflect upon the child´s/children learning difficulties at the elementary school, Casa da Criança /Escola Daniel Rebouças in the shantytown Banco da Vitória. It will try to answer questions such as; which are the main social causes that affect a child´s learning difficulties in Escola Daniel Rebouças, according to the informants/interviewees? How has the informant´s situation affected their own perception in the child´s/children’s learning difficulties? This paper studies marginalised people who lives in a marginalised district, Banco da Vitória. It will highlight home environment and education to show a continuing pattern that causes the child´s/children´s learning difficulties. This study will demonstrate the necessary cooperation between the school, government, teachers, and parents/caregiver in order to improve the children´s education and well-being.

Blahotová Kostková, Tereza January 2017 (has links)
This master's thesis deals with the topic of social causes of bulimia nervosa. In the first part of my thesis I focus on the theoretical introduction. I present the matter of eating disorders in general, which I consider to be an important basis for another part of my work. I am dealing here with the general introduction - what are eating disorders, which eating disorders are known to us, I introduce their causes, consequences, sexuality issues in patients with eating disorders and, last but not least, eating disorders in men and children. For a better understanding of the disease, the theoretical introduction is supplemented by brief client testimonials from my practice. In the next part of the thesis I deal with the topic itself, the social causes of bulimia nervosa. I focus on the issue of the family and its possible influence on the origin of the illness. Furthermore, the influence of society as such, especially the relationship of society to the ideal of beauty and the development of the ideal of beauty in history. I explore the influence of the printed media, television, advertising on bulimia nervosa as well. The last part of my work is a qualitative survey. It consists of three case studies and an interview with four respondents.
