Mobilizing resources in networked social movements: cases in Hong Kong and TaiwanWang, Jieying 22 August 2015 (has links)
The study examines social movement resource mobilization in the age of the network society. In the traditional model of Resource Mobilization Theory (RMT), material and human resources, as well as the legitimacy gained for a movement from the mass media, play crucial roles in mobilization. In the contemporary epoch of informationalism and network society, a large variety of instant communication technologies penetrate everyday life, bringing a lifestyle characterized by the intensive integration between technologies and social life. By studying the cases of two recent social movements, which witnessed the networking of different organizations/individuals and their wide use of new technologies, this research tries to identify what sorts of movement resources are employed in the mobilization process, and what the resource mobilization process is like in the paradigm of informationalism and network society. Regarding the traditional RMT, scholars identified the missing link between the movement side and the general public in terms of empathy arousal. Despite that political opportunity process theorists largely added contextual elements, they concentrated on mainstream political institutional change, but still neglecting the role of historical and social culture, and people’s role as active agency. In this study, the author also integrates the cultural aspects as a type of immaterial resource to produce a broader look into movement resources. The two cases investigated are: the anti-moral-and-national-education movement (anti-M&N) in Hong Kong and the anti-media-monopoly movement (anti-monopoly) in Taiwan. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach, employing in-depth interviews and archive study as the major methods. Results show that the traditional resources, such as resource-rich movement organizations, professionals and those possessing fruitful movement experiences are still indispensable. However, it is noteworthy that technologically adept activists have gained an increasingly important position. Their tech-savvy capabilities make them at once information archivist, movement message translator and disseminator. In addition, their heavy use of online platforms has facilitated groups which lack resources to “out-source the provision of resources to a rhizomatic movement network. In this sense, with networking taking place between those who possess resources and the tech-savvy activists, between the core and the rhizomatic participants, a networked alliance has been formed as an important resource to today’s social movements. In traditional resource mobilization theory, the mass media was regarded as an important source to legitimize the movement. In these cases, besides the legitimacy gained from certain types of mass media, the activists also presented the movement’s messages strategically, by bridging the movements with social expectation and embedding in the historical context. By this means, the activists drew wider attention to anxieties about identity. In the light of the fact that Hong Kong and Taiwan are in the eye of the storm against the backdrop of China’s rising power, the issue of identity anxiety in these two societies may provide a direction for further research. Keywords: resource mobilization, network society, Hong Kong, Taiwan

Educational leadership in the International Baccalaureate : critical reflections on modern elite formation and social differentiationOuthwaite, Deborah Emily January 2017 (has links)
This thesis has focussed on the International Baccalaureate’s Diploma Programme (IBDP). This focus arose from the author having worked in three centres which had subsequently gone on to adopt the IBDP, and which had thus given the author access to an initial purposive sample. This sample was later extended to include another five schools/colleges, as the author found that the initial interviewing sample had yielded inconclusive findings. The extended sample, however, provided a significantly rich source of qualitative data. This thesis examines leadership, and how leaders choose to implement non-mandatory curricula choices in schools and colleges. It also addresses whether leaders believe that these choices make differences to their students’ life chances through social mobility. This thesis investigates what happens when leaders can no longer afford to offer such choices to their students: how this makes them ‘feel’, and what they have ‘experienced’, through the removal of a curriculum option for educationalists and learners alike. It also addresses how leaders ‘feel’ when their students maintain access to curricula choices that other post-16 students are unable to access. The thesis also considers the development and extension of ‘a globally mobile transnational elite’ group (Savage et al, 2015: 244), and the leaders in education who deliver and extend this position. There have been eight phases to this research process, including four strands of data collection, with post-16 students, middle tier staff, HEI students, and Senior Leadership Teams in providing institutions, but the determining focus is with the SLTs interviews (N=28), conducted in 2014 and 2015. These were the individuals who had taken the decisions on the implementation of this non-mandatory curriculum area. The thesis analyzes some of the current areas of ‘distinction’ (Bourdieu, 1986) on independent schooling, and the research process demonstrates the significant gaps that are opening up between more traditional upper middle class groups in contrast with more adept transnational students and their parents. The thesis confirms that a global transnational elite exists inside the English education system, and that it uses the IBDP extensively to establish its separate cultural identity. It identifies ways of access to HEIs that are now a critical part of that cultural entity, as discussed by Savage et al (2015). This thesis is therefore an indicator of new and emerging forms of social differentiation, and examines how this is created using the IBDP. At a time of decreasing social mobility for the mainstream population, the thesis explores whether education environments are able to influence either their students or the wider education policy agenda, in order to actively achieve social justice.

The present work aims at understanding the migratory process of young people from Nova Bréscia and Coqueiro Baixo municipalities, located in Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil, in direction to urban centers inside the country and abroad. These people are involved in jobs at barbecue restaurants by the formation of social mobility networks. We are based on the perspective of the Geographical Space which is close to the historical materialism, understanding the consubstantiality of fluxes in/by the Geographical Space. We comprehend the network as a phenomenon and as a process in the understanding and in the construction of society; meant like space and time, as a form of organizing the space always in movement. The work has, as one of its questions, the idea that the expansion process of those barbecue restaurants is related to the pursuit of capital, when the workers leave the rural areas in which they reside towards the urban centers searching for social ascension. They create the networks of social mobility becoming the barbecue restaurants as a perspective of welcome spaces for those immigrants. This process of social mobility, encouraged and/or inter-related by the barbecue restaurants, seems to constitute a group of modalities by which a social group understands the possibility to occupy new spaces. Those opportunities are provided by the job mobility/ opportunity, where the search for capital is one of the determining factors (not the only one) for the workers migration from the rural area to an urban area by the formation of migrating networks.

Ascensão social no romance brasileiro do Segundo ReinadoBoucinhas, André Dutra January 2016 (has links)
This research aimed at mapping the representation of the social upward movement in Brazilian novels of the Second Empire (1840-1889), focusing on those whose plots take place in Rio de Janeiro. After surveying and read all the works that fit this cut and a serial analysis of data relevant to the issue at hand, we tried to establish links between growth and complexity of social mobility in fiction with historical changes in the period and at the same time, compare the approach found in our own national literature with British and French most influential novels on Brazilian writers.

Diante desse quadro, e inspirados no ethos
In the XVIII century, the Portuguese society, under the influence of an ethos of nobility
ranking, it valued service delivery to the Crown. In this context, this society renews its
hierarchical ranking criteria whose settings passed to be responsibility of the monarchy
itself. The Crown had the prerogative to set access to the different nobility levels and
simultaneously would perform a sort of "royal monopoly over social ranking". And
thus, inspired by the ethos of nobility, noble sectors of Portuguese society would sought
to acquire and legitimize its privileges. It was the Crown's responsibility over the
approach and control strategies establishment that social core through actions such as:
payment for services; distribution and redistribution of honors and favors, and
concessions of habits for religious and military orders. Given this situation, and inspired
by the ethos royal nobility, members of the upper layer of Bahia's society in the
eighteenth century sought to qualify socially, to make use of the various instruments of
ennoblement present in royal realm and reproduced on colonial territory. Trying to
analyze more deeply the social mobility strategies of Bahian elites, this research
investigated the trajectory of a family of considerable political power, economic and
social in colonial Bahia, where the family Pires de Carvalho e Albuquerque. In
examining the strategic initiatives of Pires de Carvalho e Albuquerque in the search for
honors and favors, in addition to social reproduction actions put into practice by the
family, it was revealed how much the ethos of nobility present in the kingdom was
reflected in the actions of the subjects that formed the upper layers of the Bahia colonial
society. On the identification and analysis of documentation to relations among
individuals of the colony and the metropolis, it was evident how much of typical
corporate parameters of the old regime were present in the hierarchical organization of
colonial society.

Modelo de transferência de conhecimento e tecnologia entre universidades parceiras na mobilidade acadêmica internacional / Knowledge and technology transfer model for partner universities in international academic mobilityPagani, Regina Negri 02 December 2016 (has links)
The KTT process is in one of the main ways to keep up to date with the technological development. With the purpose of seeking scientific and technological development, in 2011 the Brazilian government created the international academic mobility program Science without Borders (CsF), which aims to promote the training of Brazilian students and faculty through new educational and professional experiences focused on quality, entrepreneurship, competitiveness and innovation towards priority and strategic areas for Brazil. However, there is not a model to manage the scientific and technological knowledge absorbed by the students. The systematic literature review also revealed the absence of a knowledge and technology transfer model whose transferor and transferee are two universities simultaneously. So, the objective of this work is to propose a KTT model between partner universities in the international academic mobility. To achieve this goal, a field research in Brazil and France was done. In Brazil the research included ten universities that sent a greater number of students to CsF in engineering and technological areas; students from a technological university returned from CsF; non-structured participant observation in the inter-institutional relations department, and; documentary research on the CsF website. In France the research included the students returned from an international academic mobility program, and; non-structured participant observation in the international relations department and in academic activities. The results of the field survey confirm the results of the literature review, which is the absence of a KTT model whose transferor and transferee are two partner universities in the international academic mobility. At the end of the work is the KTTMUU model is proposed, which includes actions prior to the students’ departure, actions to be taken during the program, actions to obtain the feedback from students, and indicators to measure the results achieved with the TCT.
