How corporate social investment in social enterprises can contribute towards alleviating the housing crisisAlly, Naseerudin 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / Having inherited a huge housing shortage from the previous apartheid regime, the government of the newly liberated Republic of South Africa embarked on an ambitious programme to resolve the problem, as was required of it by its constitution. The government’s approach was (and is) to offer a once-off subsidy, which has become increasingly generous over the years, to qualifying households. Twenty years later, some three million dwelling units have been built, but there remains a shortfall of some two million houses, which is growing annually.
Having regard to the size of the problem and the fact that it is growing despite Herculean efforts on the part of the government, it is clear that intervention by the private sector and civil society is required. The private sector, however, is constrained by the fact that profitability in the affordable housing market is small.
In the absence of reasonable profit margins, and in the context of the fact that there is a dire need for adequate shelter, the question arises why corporations who have a long history of donating to social causes, do not allocate more of their corporate social investment budgets to organisations involved with the problem? The answer is that the need is for a private good that is already receiving significant government support, with the result that corporate social investment is crowded out. In addition, corporations are increasingly recognising the need to align their social investment strategies with their business strategies. This is not happening in the housing context partly because corporations are struggling to conceptualise the relationship between the two strategies, and partly because there is no framework within which to do so.
Corporate social investment strategies are meaningful and justifiable when they open new markets and opportunities for the company. Successful human settlements exist where economic and social opportunities are integrated seamlessly. Should the government’s housing policy use the principle of integration as a point of departure, it could encourage corporations to channel moneys to social causes.
The ideal vehicles for the corporations to employ in such endeavours are social enterprises, because these are non-profit organisations that are managed in a business-like manner. They bring focus to the investment and assurances that moneys are spent well, and their entrepreneurial approach makes them self-sustaining over time.

Developing an integrated career path with sustainable skills development for engineers : an Eskom Western Cape Operating Unit case studyMaya, Siyamthanda 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / Eskom as a recognised engineering company attracts a number of engineers yearly. Despite the success in attracting engineers, the state-owned utility has been raising concerns about a shortage of engineering skill. The case study sought to explore different programmes and processes Eskom has in place that will contribute in building and retaining the successfully attracted engineers. The aim of the study was to gain appreciation of current methods used for engineer career management. Furthermore, the intention was to make recommendations on the best way to ensure that an integrated career path for engineers in training for sustainable skills development is realised in all business units in the Western Cape Operating Unit (WCOU). The main question the research sought to answer is: What programmes and processes does Eskom have in place that will contribute to building an integrated Engineer in Training (EIT) career path for sustainable skills development? Secondary questions The investigative questions for the proposed research in support of the research question are as follows: - How do the current human resource management strategies and practices contribute to building an integrated career path for EITs in Eskom WCOU? - How do the Eskom WCOU business processes and organisational culture support the career developmental initiatives for EITs? - What career life cycle management approach is used by Eskom WCOU? Primary data for the research was gathered using two research instruments. These were a survey and semi-structured interviews. A survey questionnaire was used to collect data from engineers that have been part of the EIT programme and that have been employed in the Eskom WCOU unit from 2005 to date. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from senior managers and the general manager in WCOU. Non-probability purposive sampling was used, as the intention of the research was specifically to gain knowledge about those involved in engineering careers in this province. The research revealed nine critical variables that influence sustainable engineer skills development in the province. These are: - Leadership - Employee approach to learning - Organisation structure - Mentorship and coaching - Peer reviews - Development programme - Cross divisional exposure - Sustainable engineer skills development. The findings revealed that the first three variables listed above, namely visible, supportive leadership, positive approach to learning by employees and better use of the current organisational structure, are the main drivers for sustainable skills development in the province.

Exploration of the extent of greenwashing in South African consumer productsPindela, Nosizo 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Greenwashing is a growing concern globally. The increase in the number of green-marketed
products has resulted in an increase in greenwashing. Some companies market their products as
green, while they are not. They then respond with greenwashing to neutralise condemnations from
environmental laws and government or to gain competitive advantage. Investigations into the
existence of greenwashing in developed countries have shown high percentages. This study was
therefore aimed at investigating the magnitude of greenwashing in South African products and
determining whether there is a similar trend to other investigated countries.
This research study was conducted among six South African magazines, which have different
target markets and therefore advertise different product categories. The results indicated that 94
percent of green-advertised products in South Africa were greenwashing. Baby products and
cosmetic products had the highest percentage of green-advertised products and greenwashing
products. Amongst the sins of greenwashing, which were used to analyse the greenness of the
products, the sins of ‘vagueness’ and ‘no proof’ had the highest percentages and were evident in
all product categories.
The study also determined which target market was most susceptible to greenwashing. The results
show that new mothers were more likely to buy green products, followed by women in general. The
green claims that showed evidence of highest presence in South African products were BPA-free,
Natural, Organic and Pure.

Who benefits? Exploring cause related marketing (CRM) in a South African contextZitha, Arthur Bongani January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Arts, Culture and Heritage Management, 2017 / Arts organisations have found it difficult to survive in an economic climate that offers limited resources towards the arts. Vansa points out that Corporate Social Investment (CSI) funds have become limited thus this has prompted arts organisations to look for funding elsewhere (http://vansa.co.za). This paper explores how arts organisations can benefit from Cause Related Marketing (CRM) as a possible alternative and solution to the problem of funding. Through empirical evidence from a case study of the SHOUT campaign, sponsored by Kia Motors, this research outlines the distinct features of CRM & CSI and also the roles of both arts organisations and corporates in the collaboration. The main findings of this research highlight that there isn’t a clear definition of CRM in a South African context. This poses as a challenge for the development and implementation of the technique in a South African context. Furthermore, some arts administrators were reluctant to implement CRM due to the fear of compromising the integrity of the artistic product. There are vast possibilities for both arts organisations and corporates to benefit from CRM. However it is important for these CRM partnerships to clearly align their products in order to fully benefit from the advantages of CRM. / XL2018

Evaluation of the biodiversity reporting in the South African fishing industryUsher, Kieran Michael January 2017 (has links)
In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of
Master of Commerce
University of the Witwatersrand, October 2017 / Biodiversity is a serious concern for companies using natural resources in their operations and
should be examined closely in order to assess how these companies are reporting their biodiversity
related impacts.
This thesis evaluates the biodiversity disclosures reported by companies in the South African fishing
industry. The integrated and sustainability reports of these companies were examined over a three
year period for the quantity and quality of their biodiversity related disclosures. This involved the
examination of the extent, location, and quality of such disclosures by South African fishing
companies.
The thesis finds that there is a distinct lack of biodiversity-related disclosures in the South African
fishing industry. This thesis highlights the operation of organised hypocrisy in an industry which relies
on the availability of natural resources and the state of biodiversity in order to continue its operations.
It was found that a possible reason for limited biodiversity disclosures by South African fishing
companies was to avoid public scrutiny of their biodiversity impact. The thesis contributes to the
evaluation of a country, and more specifically an industry, that is heavily reliant on the state of
biodiversity. / GR2018

Previous issue date: 2018-02-21 / The work will focus on addressing the issue of credit for companies undergoing
judicial reorganization. In a general way will be approached institutes of law and
other areas of knowledge, especially economy and finances. Another point that the
work sought to address was the need for judicial recovery based on its most
important principles, the preservation of the company and the social function. The
analysis took place historically following the evolution of such principles within
Brazilian constitutions and their origin in foreign legal systems. It would not be
possible to deal with this issue: credit for companies undergoing judicial
reorganization, without addressing issues related to international agreements,
specifically the Basle Accords, which are focused on regulating the granting, quality
and qualification of credit within the financial systems of the signatory countries. This
approach was necessary in view of the need to understand what the Basle Accords
are in general and how they are applied in the Brazilian legal system which, in a
mistaken way, created non-existent legal barriers to lending to Companies in judicial
recovery. Finally, the paper concludes with a general approach on judicial recovery
and the importance of credit and solves the problem of the difficulty of granting it,
demonstrating that it would only be enough to change the understanding of the
existing national financial system standard so that agents Financial institutions could
offer credit to companies under these conditions without the need to contribute to the
Central Bank / O trabalho tem como foco tratar do tema do crédito para empresas em recuperação
judicial. De uma maneira geral, são abordados institutos do direito e de outras áreas
do conhecimento, especialmente economia e finanças. Outro ponto que o trabalho
procura abordar é a necessidade da recuperação judicial fundamentada em seus
princípios mais importantes, o da preservação da empresa e o da função social. A
