Social media : a new virtual civil society in Egypt?

This project seeks to trace the power of social media in serving as a virtual civil society in the Arab world, focusing on Egypt as a case study. This study aims to explore the role of social media in mobilising Egyptian activists across generations, and particularly in reaching out to people under the age of 35 who constitute around 50 per cent of the population. Studies preceding the 2011 uprising reported that young Egyptians were politically apathetic and were perceived as incapable of bringing about genuine political changes. Drawing on a range of methods and data collected from focus groups of young people under the age of 35, interviews with activists (across generations and gender), and via a descriptive web feature analysis, it is argued that online action has not been translated into offline activism. The role of trust in forming online networks is demonstrated, and how strong ties can play a pivotal role in spreading messages via social media sites. Activists relied on social media as a medium of visibility; for those who were not active in the political sphere, social media have been instrumental in raising their awareness about diverse political movements and educating them about the political process, after decades of political apathy under Mubarak’s regime. The most important benefit of using social media is the increased political knowledge and information available regarding the political situation in Egypt, despite many young people still confining their political activities to passive acts of ‘share’, ‘like’ or ‘post’ on social media. Activists have used social media to ensure visibility of their actions, not only nationally, but also regionally and internationally. There remains a strong need for offline organization and activism by using social media as a communication avenue, not necessarily as a catalyst for changing the political process. A number of problems associated with the use of such media in political deliberations concerning Egypt are highlighted, notwithstanding the positive effects of social media on the political socialisation of young Egyptians. One such problem is the lack of sustainability in online campaigns which should ideally convert into offline collective action. It can be argued that a sustainable civil society and a truly diverse public sphere rests on more sustainable, offline action, which can indeed bring about significant changes in the Egyptian political sphere.

In the systemization of the results of the research the proposal is to present, a priori, conceptual elements for the understanding of what come to be it referred phenomenon, of as it was built and which his/her function in the process of civilization of the human element that would be the Brazilian people, under the aegis of Jesus' Company. Done like this, through oral reports originating from of the social groups linked to the referred phenomenon in Parintins lifted his report in Medium Amazon and in consonance with the classic and other pertinent readings could build the present speech contemplating the form of as one plays the pastorinha for Brazil out and, particularly, in Parintins. Our analysis goes back to the different forms of as the Iberian woman it was seen by the glance of the Iberian cut societies, centered in the rules consuetudinárias and for the glance of the dramatic arts according to the pastoral Solemnities, between the Medium Age and Renaissance. Already in the New World, for the sexual abuses imputed the indigenous woman, for the defense of the environment, for the child's protection. / O fenômeno pastorinha é uma dentre as formas de expressão constituintes da cultura brasileira voltada para o tempo de natal e para queobtivéssemos conhecimento sobre ele centramos o foco da nossa pesquisa em Parintins, no Médio Amazonas. Na sistematização dos resultados da pesquisa a proposta é apresentar, a priori, elementos conceituais para o entendimento do que vem a ser o referido fenômeno, de como foi construído e qual a sua função no processo de civilização do elemento humano que seria o povo brasileiro, sob a égide da Companhia de Jesus. Feito assim, através de relatos orais oriundos dos grupos sociais vinculados ao referido fenômeno em Parintins levantamos o seu histórico no Médio Amazonas e em consonância com os clássicos e outras leituras pertinentes pudemos construir o presente discursocontemplando a forma de como se brinca a pastorinha pelo Brasil afora e, particularmente, em Parintins.Nossa análise se volta para as diferentes formas de como a mulher ibérica era vista pelo olhar das sociedades de corte ibéricas, centradas nas regras consuetudinárias e pelo olhar das artes dramáticas conforme os Autos pastoris, entre a Idade Média e o Renascimento. Já no Novo Mundo, para os abusos sexuais imputados à mulher indígena, para a defesa do meio ambiente, para a proteção da criança.

In order to analyze the phenomenon that leads the court to intervene in school to solve their problems and how this brings reflexes in school. We sought to analyze the role of the school today, without the authority and responsibility of the educator. And how the meddling of the judiciary in school contributes to the public world taking the place of the private. And how the process of political alienation unfolded, originating the sphere social that supplanted the other spheres. As well as the loss of language through the process of judicialization precarizes, even more, the role of the school. And how this meddling takes the place of thought, judgment, and action. The work of Arendt sheds light on the phenomenon of the judicialization of schoolchildren, as a public concern for private problems and the loss of interest in the common destiny of politics. The analysis of the de-structuring of the public and private spheres and the emergence of the social sphere can lead to possible answers to the difficulty of distinguishing at present what is specific to politics and what should be protected in the private sphere since the Judiciary proposes to offer political answers to social problems, which have neither public nor private characteristics, in the Arendtiana’s perspective. The Arendtiana lines of thought provide us with epistemological content that allows us to refer to the study on screen, with its critique of political alienation, and about science as an ideal of progress that aims to respond to all the evils of the world, the crisis of tradition, authority and responsibility, the mass society and the crisis in education that emerges in modern education as an instrument of politics. The appreciation of the current displacement of politics to the scope of the judiciary, problematizing the political and juridical process that has invaded the school field, shows that the judicialization occurs as an anomalous process and weakens the representative system of the school as a place of thought, reflection, action and the exercise of discourse. These propositions aimed at the construction of the thesis that carried out a bibliographical research documentary with the analysis of the works of Arendt with the use of the historical-legal method. / O aumento significativo do número de ações judiciais em que a escola é parte motivou a formulação dessa tese. A fim de analisar o fenômeno que leva a esfera judicial a intervir na escola e compreender quais os reflexos oriundos da judicialização, no âmbito escolar. Buscou-se examinar qual é o papel da escola hoje, desprovida da autoridade e responsabilidade. E de que forma a intromissão do judiciário na escola contribui para que o mundo público tome o lugar do privado, conduzindo ao processo de alienação política, originando a esfera do Social. Bem como a perda da linguagem por meio do processo de judicialização precariza, ainda mais, o papel da escola. E como essa intromissão tira o lugar do pensamento, do julgamento e da ação. A obra de Arendt, lança luz sobre o fenômeno da judicialização das escolares, enquanto preocupação pública com problemas privados e a perda do interesse pelo destino comum da política. A análise da desestruturação das esferas pública e privada, e o surgimento do social, podem verter em possíveis respostas para dificuldade de se distinguir, atualmente, aquilo que seja próprio da política e o que deve ser resguardado no âmbito privado, vez que o Poder Judiciário se propõe a oferecer respostas políticas a problemas sociais, que não têm características nem públicas nem privadas, na perspectiva arendtiana. As linhas de pensamento da autora nos fornecem conteúdo epistemológico que permite referendar o estudo em tela, com sua crítica sobre a alienação política, e sobre a ciência, enquanto ideal de progresso, que se propõe a dar resposta para todos males do mundo moderno. O fim da tradição, autoridade e responsabilidade, bem como a massificação da sociedade criam o ambiente propício para a crise da educação levando a educação moderna a se tornar um instrumento da política. Desta forma, a apreciação do deslocamento da política para o âmbito do judiciário, problematizando o processo político e jurídico que invadiram o campo escolar, demonstra que a judicialização ocorre enquanto um processo anômalo que enfraquece o sistema representativo da escola enquanto instância do pensamento e reflexão. Lugar da ação, do agir em conjunto e do exercício do discurso. Essas proposições objetivaram a construção da tese que realizou uma pesquisa bibliográfica documental realizando um estudo amparado nos conceitos obtidos nas obras de Arendt.

Peruvian cinema, national identity and political violence, 1988-2004

The role of national cinema in shaping, reflecting and contesting a complex national identity that is the site of conflict and struggle is the central interest of this study of contemporary Peruvian cinema, 1988-2004. This project examines the relationship between cinema, state and identity in Peru, with a specific focus on the representation of the political violence between the state and Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) that began in 1980. It looks in particular at portrayals of important events, characters and consequences of the bloody conflict that for a time threatened to destabilize the nation entirely. It considers these representations in the context of a time of great change for Peruvian society and of transition for Peruvian national cinema, and addresses the relationship between developments in film policy and the formation of Peruvian national identity in cinema. As such, it draws on debates about the nature and function of national cinemas, as well as on discussions between artists, cultural theorists and sociologists about the evolution of peruanidad since the declaration of independence from Spain in the early nineteenth century. Once the main elements of the cinematic and social crises have been explored and established in Chapters Two and Three, the remainder of the project consists of three sets of chronologically ordered analyses of individual films that somehow defied the national cinema crisis, and that provoked debate on both the conflict itself, and on broader questions pertaining to the relationship between national identity and violence. The conclusion considers these films as an interlinked body of cinematic works that share similar themes and concerns. It summarises the issues they tackle, the ideological and formal approaches they take to those issues, the potential social and cultural impact, and their contribution to the crystallization of a Peruvian national identity at the start of the twenty-first century.

The paradox and contradictions in cultural value and exchange worth of Anatolian hand-crafted wool felted textiles

This thesis seeks to explain the development and implementation of a new model, methods and process of practice required for the rejuvenation of hand crafted woolfelted textile making customs and practices of the Anatolian region of Turkey, which mediates tradition in a contemporary context. In progressing the aims of the research project underpinning the thesis it was necessary to undertake both field work, learning the felt makers' practices, and to undertake empirical design-based product trials which provided insights into the culture and creative potential of the felt making activity thus facilitating the development of the new model of practice. Therefore the thesis examines not only the nature and context, both historical and contemporary, of felt makers and felt making practice in Anatolia but also presents ethnographic and theoretical discourse intended to argue and justify the approaches adopted in the development of the new model of practice and a verification process of its effectiveness. The thesis interrelates strands of changing contexts; research record and theory discourse and argues that the new model of practice enables sustainability and displays ethical responsibility appropriate to, and commensurate with, the felt making culture of Anatolia and its traditions. The thesis argues by demonstration that the perception of an object is determined by location and level of consciousness, which can be reflected upon and, through redesign involving aggregation of qualities and values, purposefully represent an object and recreate its lost aura's root from tradition, transposed into a new diversity of perceptual responses. The thesis concludes that mediatory actions implicit in the new model of practice need not adversely impact upon the traditional culture of the makers in terms of lifestyle choices, since reciprocal exchange is a local transaction, which proffers evolving tradition as cultural values to a diversity of external locations and levels of consciousness. This open-ended mediatory action of anonymous hybridisations will continue by the intervention of other designers through evolutionary integration to elevate the status of the culture object and its related craft activity.

The purpose of the present dissertation is to show the different discourses that are expressions of different languages that has been practiced in the social sectors that deal with Ayahuasca. All questions of life have on your surroundings discourses of various types, shapes and sections; discourses are just like rivers that run courses on and many times are interconnected. When we observe the various discourses and dialogues, involving the ayahuasca, we can perceive the immense variance of ideas and social groups involved in the discussion of issues related to the theme. By analyzing the taxonomic discourse, we realize the complexity the elements that compose the two vegetables that are used in the making of tea. Observed in historical and anthropological language a huge melting pot of cultures and concepts that intertwine forming a mosaic of relationships that are connected. Paying attention into the scientific interdiscourse we have listed the different groups that are studying the ayahuasca and their themes. In discourse and language mediatic we find headlines, which mark the years of existence of the different groups and their respective conflicts which contain the language police officer, and which deal with the issues involving the ayahuasca historically and contemporaneously. We also come across with the legal discourse and state regulator, which has the documents and devices legalizing about the use of ayahuasca. Finally the language and discourse of the sciences of religion which seeks to obtain social responses to the birth of religiosity within the cultures, these themes which are full of symbols, rituals and imaginaries, they can only be explored and understood within your own contexts when utilizing the tools of anthropology, of sociology and the psychology of religion. / O tema Discursos sobre o uso religioso do psicoativo Ayahuasca , foi pesquisado de acordo com o método da análise do discurso, tendo como metodologia a coleta de dados na pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. O objetivo da presente dissertação é apresentar os diferentes discursos que são expressões das linguagens diversas que tem sido praticadas nos setores sociais que tratam do tema Ayahuasca. Todas as questões da vida tem em seu entorno discursos dos mais variados tipos, perfis e vertentes; discursos são como cursos de rios que correm e muitas vezes se interligam. Quando observamos os diferentes discursos e diálogos, que envolvem a ayahuasca, podemos perceber a imensa variação de ideias e grupos sociais envolvidos na discussão dos problemas pertinentes ao tema. Ao analisar o discurso taxonômico, percebemos a complexidade dos elementos que compõem os dois vegetais que são utilizados na confecção do chá. Observamos na linguagem histórico-antropológica um imenso caldeirão de culturas e conceitos, que se entrelaçam formando um mosaico de relações que se conectam. Atentando para o interdiscurso acadêmico científico listamos os diferentes grupos que estão estudando a ayahuasca e seus temas. No discurso e linguagem midiática encontramos as manchetes, que marcam os anos de existência dos diferentes grupos e seus respectivos conflitos, que contêm a linguagem policial, e que versam sobre os temas que envolvem a ayahuasca historicamente e contemporaneamente. Nos deparamos também com o discurso jurídico e regulador do Estado, que possui a documentação e os dispositivos de legalização sobre o uso da ayahuasca. Finalmente a linguagem e discurso das ciências da religião, que procura obter respostas sociais ao nascimento de religiosidade nas culturas, temas esses que estão cheios de símbolos, rituais e imaginários, que só podem ser explorados e entendidos dentro de seus próprios contextos quando utilizando das ferramentas da antropologia, da sociologia e da psicologia da religião.

This dissertation is divided into two parts. The first part of the dissertation analyzes theoretical knowledge from li-terary sources, which are essential to realizing the significance of the investigated phenomena. The second part con-tains an analysis of the corporate culture as a motivational factor based on the literary sources and then proposes the necessary changes that would lead to the desired state.

Then discusses the current structure of the media system, focusing since the formation of a mass society, to the ubiquity of digital information in urban areas, with the aim of demonstrating that socio-cultural scene is marked by an increasingly converging means, as well as languages. Accordingly, discusses the internet as a kind of media marked by computer-mediated communication, in which different forms of media are articulated, giving rise to system based on network interconnection. Through the notion of network underscores the fact that the social context of networking sites consists of complex associations between humans and technologies, aiming to empirical research attend more to the hybrid nature of these relationships, and less for their infrastructural aspect. For empirical verification, purposes qualitative research, using ethnographic method, with the intention of supporting the argument that social media has the ability to affect the everyday experiences of individuals, changing informational scenario. As empirical field elects Facebook, choosing because it is characterized as the social network site most used in Brazil and in several other countries. Conducts interviews with twelve users of Facebook, still using the participant observation, examinee the interactions among netizens as well as the ways in which they relate to the information and the site through the available tools. Accordingly, concludes that each one of the informational practices observed point aspects of how information is and is at the same time, the actual constituent. The perception that users have of the real involves both physical dimensions, such as digital, implying direct consequences in the construction of their experiences. Through Facebook, individuals have the opportunity to define for themselves and for Other they perceive as information, wish to have access, and especially what they think need to be highlighted or ignored in their daily experiences on the internet. Thus, it was possible to see the Internet not only as media technology, but mainly as an element of culture, where living online and offline complement. The user participates actively of informational process that develops in their wefts, using their tools to grasp senses and give meaning to information circulated on the site. / Trata sobre como o fenômeno das redes sociais na internet afeta o cenário informacional contemporâneo, transformando as práticas e experiências cotidianas dos indivíduos no tocante à produção, consumo e compartilhamento da informação no espaço digital. Problematiza como a expressão sociedade da informação tem sido referenciada para caracterizar um formato de organização social baseado no paradigma tecnológico da informação. Em seguida, aborda a composição contemporânea do sistema de mídia, discutindo desde a formação de uma sociedade de massa, até a ubiquidade da informação digital no espaço urbano, com o objetivo de demonstrar que a cena sociocultural é marcada cada vez mais por uma convergência de meios, assim como de linguagens. Nesse sentido, discute a internet como um tipo de mídia marcada pelo despontar da comunicação mediada por computador, no qual diferentes meios de informação e comunicação se articulam, dando origem a um sistema baseado na interligação em rede. Através da noção de rede ressalta o fato de que o contexto das redes sociais na internet é formado por complexas associações entre humanos e tecnologias, almejando com a pesquisa empírica atentar mais para o caráter híbrido dessas relações, e menos para o seu aspecto infraestrutural. Como estratégia metodológica, realiza uma pesquisa de cunho qualitativo, recorrendo ao método etnográfico, com a intenção de confirmar a tese de que as redes sociais na internet têm a capacidade de afetar as experiências cotidianas dos indivíduos, reconfigurando o cenário informacional contemporâneo. Como campo empírico adota o Facebook, escolhendo-o por se caracterizar como o site de redes sociais mais utilizado no Brasil, bem como em vários outros países. Assim, além de entrevistas realizadas com doze usuários do Facebook, recorre, ainda, à observação participante, atentando às interações entre os internautas, bem como às maneiras como estes se relacionam com as informações e com o site por meio das ferramentas disponibilizadas. Conclui que cada umas das práticas informacionais observadas apontam aspectos de como a informação constitui e é, ao mesmo tempo, constituinte do real. A percepção que os usuários têm do real envolve tanto dimensões físicas, como digitais, implicando em consequências diretas na construção de suas experiências. Através do Facebook, os indivíduos têm a oportunidade de definirem para si e para o Outro o que consideram como informação, o que desejam ter acesso e, sobretudo, o que julgam necessário ser destacado ou ignorado em suas vivências cotidianas na internet. Assim, foi possível perceber a internet não só como tecnologia midiática, mas, principalmente, enquanto elemento da cultura, onde vida on-line e off-line se complementam. Os usuários do Facebook participam ativamente do processo informacional que se desenvolve em suas teias, fazendo uso de suas ferramentas para apreender sentidos e conferir significados à informação que circula no site.
