Filming the In-between: Studying the Representation of Cultural Identities of Immigrant Families In Canadian and Quebec Cinema

Decock, Olena 16 July 2012 (has links)
With a statistical rise in visible, audible and cultural minorities in Canada, the importance of recognizing the relationship between immigrants, culture and identity as constructed in collective discourse becomes paramount. Through hermeneutic and sociocritical paradigms, this research applies a constructionist approach to qualitatively analyze representations of cultural identities in Canadian and Quebec films projecting intergenerational conflicts within immigrant families. From these analyses, five tendencies were elicited: guilt, displacement, in-betweenness, reflections on Canadian society, and heterogeneous perspectives. While deconstructing cultural identity portrayals remains crucial, it is equally important to study these systems of meaning within production. The research is extended through the appendaged short film,Tracing Shadows, a glimpse into the voices of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. Both textual analyses and the filmic creation demonstrate the symbiotic connection between society and culture, nurtured within collective identity narratives’ depictions of time and space.

"Le Cadavre encerclé", un voyage au bout de la nuit de Kateb Yacine / "Le Cadavre encerclé", a Kateb Yacine’s journey to the end of the night

Money, Chloé 13 June 2017 (has links)
When Kateb Yacine publishes Le Cadavre encerclé in the review Esprit, in 1954, Jean-Marie Serreau praises this text immediately. At this time, Jean-Marie Serreau was a famous stage director and a very important pioneer of the dramatic avant-garde. His researches were both aesthetic and political at the same time. When he discovered Kateb Yacine, he was working on a very special kind of theatre, with the critics called the decolonisation theatre. Kateb’s text was published in a militant review, put on stage by someone who was an activist and performed in Brussels as part of a militant event : the text is immediately interpreted as militant itself. But a different analysis method – the sociocritical one – enables us to promote a different point of view. Studying how the text faces the contemporary litterary production makes appear how the writer tries to invent his position. The writer’s archives, his youth poems and letters, help us to understand that he does not write as a militant writer but as a romantic one – his models are XIXth century writers. The text shelters an important autobiographical material, which is condamned to be denied by the critics : in 1954 the war starts in Algeria, and the litterary circles do not want a lyrical poet but a commited writer to claim for decolonisation. Jérôme Meizoz’ works on the position concept enables us to stydu how Kateb Yacine constantly negociated the image he was assimilated to in this circles, his identity and position as a writer. Concerning the autobiographical material, Kateb Yacine will try to make it reappear all through his collaboration with Jean-Marie Serreau. It will finaly reappear in Kateb’s last play, Le Bourgeois sans-culotte. Originaly dedicated to Robespierre’s life, the play becomes Kateb’s testimony.

Munch, Barbara 09 1900 (has links)
How can we understand a Houellebecquian text when it evades meaning by incessant references to the field of sexuality? The sexual in the author's work is as much a textual façade as a tool for criticism. This thesis provides an in-depth analysis of the construction of sexuality in Michel Houellebecq’s Les particules élémentaires and Plateforme. The observation of an omni-present sexuality is surpassed in order to question the mechanisms at work in the representations of the body and sexuality conveyed by French society as it enters the 21st century. Employing a sociocritical interpretation, the present study draws on the concept of “social imaginary” (Popovic) to bring out the dynamic reltionship established between these pre-existing patterns and the produced text. First of all, this gives a new insight into the nature of the pornographic references that interrupt the Houellebecquian narrative, and allows us to establish how subversion works in this particular register. The characters’ relationship to their bodies indicates a sexual reduction to their genitals, wich we understand as a systematic sexualisation of individuals. This descriptive choice leads to a questionning of the injunctions and norms addressed by the text, present in the public area. By dealing with the subjects such as prostitution, sexual tourism, swinging, or paedophilia, the Houellebecquian text speaks of the world from an “oblique” angle (Hamon), associated with the construction of a double discourse. The study of Les particules élémentaires focuses on the tension between an erotico-advertising imaginary and a discours on the biological determinism of bodies for the characters, whil Plateforme is examined through the question of the sexualisation of exoticism and the commodification of the body as an objet of consumption. By drawing on previous Houellebecquian critiques and literature, this thesis brings out constructions of female and male figures, which convey an incisive critique and a new discourse on contemporary society. The lover and the prostitute, between pornographic representation and lyrical sublimation, are redefined in this context.
