The effect of mulching on tree performance and fruit quality of 'cripps' pink' apples

Kotze, Willem Petrus 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Three field trials were conducted to investigate the effects of mulching on the chemical and biological aspects of the soil as it is reflected by tree performance and fruit quality in ‘Cripps’ Pink’ orchards. In the two trials at Lourensford Estate, where only the soil type differed between sandy silt loam (sandy) and heavy silt loam (heavy), mulches where used as an additive to the soil surface together with a standard, commercial, inorganic fertilization program. Four different mulch types: compost, wood chips, vermi-compost and a geotextile fabric, were compared to a bare surface control in a randomized complete block design. At the heavy silt loam site (site 1), the wood chips treatment was the most effective in regulating diurnal soil temperatures in the top 10 cm of soil (2009/10), whereas all mulches regulated average diurnal soil temperature similarly and more effectively than the control at the sandy silt loam site (site 2). After two seasons of treatment at site 1, the vermi-compost treatment significantly increased soil phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), manganese (Mn), zink (Zn) and boron (B) significantly compared to the control. The wood chips treatment increased Na, K and Ca and compost only increased soil K significantly compared to the control. For site 2, only wood chips (Na and K) and vermi-compost (Na, K and Mg) showed significant increases in soil nutrient elements compared to the control. Yield efficiency was significantly increased by the wood chips (both seasons) and vermicompost (only 2009/10) treatments compared to the control in site 1. In site 2, none of the treatments differed significantly in yield efficiency compared to the control treatment. The number of roots and fine feeder roots were increased (not sign) by the wood chips and geotextile treatments compared to the control. In site 1, all treatments improved the number of roots compared to the control treatment, in contrast with site 2, where the number of roots of the control, compost and vermi-compost treatments was more similar. Fruit quality showed significant differences between the wood chips and vermi-compost treatments compared to the geotextile and control treatments for malic acid, at site 1, at harvest in 2009. This did not differ significantly from the compost treatment. Leaf mineral analysis only showed significant differences at site 2, in 2010, with significantly increased for the following minerals and treatments: Mn (compost and geotextile treatments versus other treatments), Fe (control treatment compared to all treatments except compost), Zn (compost compared to all other treatments) and B (control and compost versus vermicompost, wood chips and geotextile). Fruit mineral analyses showed no differences between treatments at harvest 2009 for either site and 2010, for site 1. At site 2, the Ca percentage of fruit from the wood chips treatment was significantly higher than that of all treatments, except the geotextile treatment. Only in the 2010 analysis at site 2, the mycorrhizal colonization was significantly influenced, where all the mulching treatments showed an increase compared to the control. However, the same trend was observed at site 1. At site 1and 2, the compost, wood chips and vermi-compost treatments in general showed a decreasing trend in percentage plant parasitic and increasing trend in percentage free living nematodes from 2009 to 2010. In general, the geotextile and control treatments showed an increasing trend in the percentage plant parasitic and decrease in percentage free living nematodes. However, this was not the case at 0 – 15 cm soil depth for site 1. In the third trial, at Elgin Experimental Farm (Elgin), bare surface chemical control was compared to mulching in the tree row (mulch) and mulching together with regular application of compost tea (mulch + compost tea). All treatments were combined with different inter row management practices to compose a total of eight different treatments. In the tree row, the control treatment received standard rates of inorganic fertilizer, which was compared to the mulched only treatment. Both the percentage of soil carbon and cation exchange capacity was significantly increased by all the mulch treatments compared to the control. Furthermore, all the mulches increased various soil minerals significantly, however of which only P was significantly increased in both the leaves and fruit. The rate of soil microbial activity and mycorrhizal root colonization was significantly increased by mulching treatments, but resulted in a significantly lower yield efficiency compared to the inorganic control treatment. This can be ascribed partly to the microbial activity of the compost mulch during spring, although it was not quantified per se and to the increase in tree vigour at the end of the trial. The slow rate of N mineralization was reflected indirectly by the significantly lower fruit N for the mulched treatments and the lower rate of microbial activity during spring at this site. With regards to the addition of the compost tea, no significant contributions were evident in terms of tree performance, soil minerals or microbial activity over a period of seven years, compared to the application of mulch only. Compared to the trial at Lourensford Estate, with no significant differences in fruit mineral composition between treatments after two years, fruit mineral analyses of the Elgin trial showed significant differences between treatments after six (2009) and seven (2010) seasons for P for some treatments. Only in 2010 more treatments showed significant differences for N, Mn, Fe and Zn as well. Regarding fruit quality, in agreement with the results at Lourensford Estate, differences were not persistent across all seasons for treatments.

EMERGENCE PATTERNS OF COMMON WATERHEMP AND PALMER AMARANTH IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Franca, Lucas Xavier 01 August 2015 (has links)
The continued spread of glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp [Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) Sauer (syn. rudis)] and Palmer amaranth [Amaranthus palmeri (S. Wats.)] have complicated weed control efforts in soybean and corn production in Illinois. A thorough understanding of the weed biology of these species is fundamental in developing effective weed management strategies. The determination of emergence patterns as well as the influence of tillage practices on soil microclimate and soil seed bank will allow control strategies to be implemented at the most effective timing. Field experiments were conducted in southern Illinois throughout the growing season of 2013 and 2014 on two separate sites with populations of common waterhemp and Palmer amaranth. Three tillage treatments were evaluated: no-tillage; early tillage, preferably performed around a recommended soybean planting date of May 1st; and late tillage, preferably performed on June 1st to simulate a late soybean planting. Amaranthus seedlings were identified and enumerated in the center 1 m2 quadrat of each plot within a 7-day interval from April through November or first frost. All weed seedlings were removed from the plot area after each enumeration. Soil temperature and soil moisture were recorded hourly throughout the experiment using data loggers established in the plot area. First emergence of common waterhemp occurred earlier in the season than did Palmer amaranth. In 2013, initial emergence of common waterhemp and Palmer amaranth was observed at the first and second week of May, respectively. In 2014, initial common waterhemp emergence was observed in late April, while Palmer amaranth initial emergence was similar to previous year. Palmer amaranth emerged over a longer period compared to waterhemp. By the end of June, 90% of common waterhemp had emerged regardless of tillage or year. By the same measure, Palmer amaranth emergence was extended to the third week of July and second week of August in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Soil temperature did not differ across tillage treatments in both years. On the other hand, differences in soil moisture were observed, mostly over two weeks following each tillage operation. The single best predictor for common waterhemp emergence was soil temperature (weekly highs and lows) followed by soil moisture. For Palmer amaranth emergence the single best predictor was spikes in soil moisture (high for the week). In 2013, common waterhemp emergence was initially positively and later in the growing season negatively interacted with maximum temperature 13 days prior to counts, with temperatures above 30 C observed with decreased emergence (R2 = 0.35). In the same year spikes in soil moisture interacted with Palmer amaranth emergence were those observed 11 days before each seedling enumeration date (R2 = 0.30). In 2014, with first common waterhemp emergence in April, a positive interaction to high soil temperature was initially observed followed by a positive interaction to minimum temperatures later in the season (R2 = 0.55). Spikes in soil moisture observed 2 weeks prior to emergence and weekly high temperatures 8 days prior to emergence were the best predictors of Palmer amaranth emergence in 2014 (R2 =0.37). Soil seed bank depletion was also estimated by comparing field emergence with greenhouse experiment results of soil seed bank estimation. Greater emergence of common waterhemp from the soil seed bank was observed in early tillage in 2013 and no-tillage in 2014 than late tillage, respectively; for Palmer amaranth, the greatest emergence from the soil seed bank was observed in no-tillage and late tillage in 2013, and no-tillage, in 2014. The emergence patterns observed in this research suggest that although common waterhemp and Palmer amaranth exhibit discontinuous emergence throughout the growing season, greater attention should be placed on managing peaks of emergence from late April to late July, which is critical to provide a foundation for early-season weed management. Furthermore, knowledge regarding the emergence patterns of common waterhemp and Palmer amaranth combined with monitoring environmental factors such as soil moisture and soil temperature may assist efforts for scouting fields to determine the likely presence of these weed species. The timing of viable postemergence herbicide options for control of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp and Palmer amaranth is critical and monitoring weather patterns to direct scouting efforts may improve the timeliness of these postemergence applications.

Vliv disturbance lesa na teplotu a vlhkost půdy / Influence disturbance of forest on the temperature and humidity of soil

PAVLAS, Jiří January 2014 (has links)
In this study, I attempted to evaluate the impact of two forest disturbances on the soil temperature and humidity in spruce forest. The spruce forests were attacked by bark beetle in the Březník area 17 years ago. Two types of management were applied after the bark beetle attack. The first approach was clear cutting and removing dead trees. The second approach was non-interventional and this zone was left to natural succession. This study compares differences in daily temperature amplitude and volumetric soil humidity between both types of management. I tried to evaluate whether the soil temperature and humidity conditions are explained more by influence of the management or by vegetation cover. Results showed significant difference in daily temperature amplitudes. Temperature amplitudes are about 49 % higher in clear cut areas than in areas with natural succession. Differences are insignificant in soil humidity conditions. The influence of the vegetation on soil temperature and humidity is insignificant. I, too, compared soil temperature and humidity from Březník areas (17 years after disturbance) and Prameny Vltavy areas where the spruce forest decayed recently.

For reclamation of degraded soil area's with subsoil exposure, the revegetation has been adopted, to introduce organic matter enhance, litter formation and recovery of soil microbial community. This, through the complex relationships that microbes establish with the soil material and the plant roots, will contribute to improve the soil conditions, compromised by degradation. Microbial communities are influenced by variations of soil temperature, moisture and atmosphere, as well as by reductions in soil plant cover, nutrient availability, soil structural stability, among other factors, that can be modified by soil use and degradation. The main aim of this work was to evaluate the recovery process of an exposed subsoil in a Cerrado degraded area, through the evaluation of surface cover, spontaneous vegetation survey, soil fertility conditions and microbiological activity. The re-vegetation technique adopted for recovery consisted of area mechanization/scarification (0.40 m depth), incorporation of organic residues - RO (aquatic macrophytes) at 0, 16, and 32 Mg ha-1 and agroindustrial - RA (ash) at 0, 15, 30 and 45 Mg ha-1, as subsoil conditioners, and reintroduction of vegetation, with seedling of 10 different tree species native from Cerrado (4.0 x 5.0 m spacing). After, elapsed 4 and 5 years of the intervention, the performance of the proposed technique was evaluated. The surface covering evaluation was performed by analyzing images obtained with a camera fixed parallel to the surface and always at the same height (1.6 m). The survey of spontaneous vegetation, in March 2013, was carried out as a census, complete identification (100%) of the individuals present in the experimental area - AE. In March of 2015, the evaluations of spontaneous vegetation and soil were performed in all 36 plots (20 x 30 m) of the AE, and the species identification was carried out in subplots of 5 x 5 m (herbaceous stratum - grasses, weeds and climbers), and the shrub-tree stratum was evaluated in the whole plot (20 x 30 m). Fertility and microbiological analyzes (basal respiration (C-CO2 released), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), determination of metabolic (qCO2) and microbial (qMic) quotients and of structure of fungal and bacterial communities) were conducted. The established recovery process increased the grasses biomass and plant vegetal cover in the area upon the addition of residues, and decreased the variation in soil temperature. The recovery model adopted allowed the establishment of 72 regenerating species (65 natives and 7 exotics) in the degraded area, with the greatest diversity of species being observed in the treatments where the degraded soil was conditioned. The fertility of the EA is still committed, however the pH increased and Al decreased, signaling positively. Microbiological variables showed a tendency to increase their activity in the recovering area, in relation to degraded area without intervention. The DNA extraction was not effective to Cerrado soil or degraded soils, due to the low concentration of microorganisms, which could be approached in new studies.

Cropping system effects on soil water, soil temperature and dryland maize productivity

Mampana, Reedah Makgwadi January 2014 (has links)
Improved soil water conservation has become an important subject in semi-arid areas due to low and erratic rainfall which is often combined with higher temperatures to provide unsuitable conditions for successful crop productivity. Dryland agriculture remains vulnerable to yield losses in these areas. This calls for implementation of conservation agricultural practices that would improve dryland maize productivity. An on-station field trial was started in 2007 at Zeekoegat experimental farm (24 kilometers north of Pretoria), to establish the effect of different conservation agriculture practices on soil and plant properties. The experimental lay-out was a split-plot randomized complete block design, replicated three times, with each replicate split into two tillage systems (whole plots) and then each whole plot (reduced tillage (RT) and conventional tillage (CT)) was subdivided into 12 treatments (two fertilizer levels x 6 cropping patterns). The present study explored the impacts of different tillage practices, cropping patterns and fertilization levels on soil water content, soil temperature and dryland maize productivity during the 2010/11 and 2011/12 growing seasons. To improve the quality of soil water content (SWC) data, the effect of correction for concretions on soil bulk density and the relationship between volumetric soil water content (SWC) vs neutron water meter (NWM) count ratios was also investigated. Corrections for concretions on soil bulk density did not improve NWM calibrations in this study. In all seasons, significantly higher mean SWC was found under RT treatment than in CT at all depths except at 0-300 mm. For example, during the 2010/11 growing season, SWC under RT was 1.32 % and 1.10 % higher than CT for the 300 – 1350 mm and 0 – 1350 mm soil profiles, respectively. The mean weekly SWC was consistently higher for RT throughout both the growing seasons. Significantly higher SWC was also found under monoculture at all soil depths (except at 0-300 mm during 2011/12) compared to treatments under intercropping. For example, during 2010/11, at 0-300mm, SWC under maize monoculture was 1.72 % higher than under intercropping. The maximum and minimum soil temperatures were significantly higher at 100 and 400 mm soil depths under CT than under RT during 2010/11. During 2011/12, significantly higher minimum soil temperatures at 100 mm depth and lower temperature differences (maximum – minimum soil temperatures) at 400 mm depth were observed under intercropping. Despite the higher SWC and reduced soil temperature under RT, the maize seeds emergence rate was lower and plant stand was reduced. This is attributed to other factors associated with RT systems such as increased soil penetration resistance which often leads to poor root development. The lower soil temperatures under RT were generally within the range that would not be expected to inhibit growth and uptake of nutrients. Slower growth under RT resulted in lower biomass and grain yield. Plants that received high fertilizer rates grew more vigorously than plants under lower fertilizer levels when water was not a limiting factor, but produced lower grain yield due to water shortage in March, especially in 2011/12. The harvest index was therefore lower for treatments that received high fertilizer levels. Maize biomass under monoculture x low fertilizer level was significantly lower compared to other fertilizer x cropping pattern treatments. Maize plant growth under intercropping was improved throughout the seasons, which led to significantly higher grain yield than under maize monoculture. It is therefore recommended that farmers in dryland areas take the advantage of intercropping maize with legumes to obtain higher maize productivity. Further research should focus on investigating the possibility of roots restrictions occurring under RT conditions and under various environmental and soil conditions. / Dissertation (MScAgric)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / lk2014 / Plant Production and Soil Science / MScAgric / Unrestricted

Beckmann, Björn-R. 25 October 2016 (has links)
A model to determine the minimum amount of water required to hold the soil temperature above 0°C under a plastic mulch is presented. Numerical experiments with and without consideration of the mulch foil, with and without sprinkling of the mulch foil were performed. The results substantiate that sprinkling par example at 75% of the usual used rate of water is sufficient to avoid that the soil temperature falls below 0°C because of the relative big freezing energy of water and that mulching alone cannot prevent the soil temperature from decreasing below that value. The model results are in good agreement with observations.

REINDEER GRAZING IN A NORTHERN BOREAL FOREST : Seasonal and reindeer-induced changes in nutrient availability and soil temperature

Karlsson, Agnes January 2023 (has links)
Soil nutrient availability is a key component to understanding the boreal ecosystems, as it directly relates to plant productivity and ecosystem diversity. There is however little known about how the nutrient availability changes seasonally in the boreal forest. This study aimed to understand how soil temperature and nutrient availability changed seasonally as well as with or without reindeer grazing. This was done through measuring NH4, NO3, PO4, total N, and C:N ratio in soil samples taken in- and outside a reindeer exclosure in northern Sweden and then analyzing for differences over sampling time, grazing treatment, and the interaction of both. Differences in soil temperature were more extreme in the grazed areas, giving higher summer temperatures and lower winter temperatures, due to a decreased layer of insulating lichens. Increased soil temperatures also resulted in lowering the C:N ratio, possibly by enhancing the microbial activity leading to larger amounts of CO2 being released. No nutrients differed by grazing treatments, possibly due to the system being complex enough to contain contradicting effects. No systematical differences in seasonal nutrient levels could be found, which was deemed as surprising, but opens for the possibility of sampling one time being sufficient to have an approximation of nutrient levels all year round

Influence of logging residues on MeHg accumulation in soil / Påverkan av avverkningsrester på ackumulering av MeHg i mark

Blomgren, Axel January 2018 (has links)
Forestry has been found to increase the accumulation of methyl mercury (MeHg), a highly neurotoxic compound, in forest soils. However, little is known about how forestry influences catchment processes that governs the mercury (Hg) methylation process. Logging residues are used in harvested catchments in stick roads to reduce soil disturbances caused by forestry machinery. Logging residues left on site after harvest have been suggested to act as a source of high-quality organic matter that stimulates the activity of the microorganisms that carry out the methylation of Hg. In addition, logging residues might influence the activity and abundance of methylating bacteria by reducing the temperature fluctuations in soils below residues and by increasing the soil moisture content. To evaluate the impact of logging residues on the accumulation of MeHg, an experimental field study was carried out in three sites, one in Uppland and two in Västerbotten. The concentration of MeHg was compared between soils covered with residues and soils without residues, and between the lower and upper parts residue piles. Logging residues were not found to influence the levels of MeHg in soils. However, an increased accumulation of MeHg was found in the lower part of residue piles. The accumulation of MeHg in the lower parts was accompanied by a reduced temperature amplitude and an increased water content compared to the upper part of the piles. The increased formation of MeHg might have been mediated by an increased water content in the lower part of the residue piles, possibly by increasing the abundance and activity of Hgmethylating microorganisms due to suboxic/anoxic conditions within biofilms around decomposing needles. The dissolved organic matter composition in soil water differed in soils below residues compared to without residues, but the organic matter signature in soil water under residues was not found to be compliant with an elevated mercury methylation rate. As MeHg accumulated in the lower part of residue piles could become mobilized and transferred to surface water, the suitability of using logging residues in stick roads depends on the location within the catchment. The removal of logging residues could prevent the potential mobilization of MeHg from residue piles. Though, as soil disturbances may cause an increased Hg methylation rate and mediate MeHg export to surface waters, other form of protection, e.g. logging mats, should be used if logging residues are not used to protect soils.
