Beliefs and practices of Sotho antenatal womenMofokeng, Mantoa Augustina 30 November 2003 (has links)
The study investigated the beliefs and practices of Sotho antenatal women. The aim was to describe the beliefs and practices of Sotho antenatal women in order to contribute to the identification of guidelines for a teaching programme for both midwives and traditional birth attendants.
A non-experimental, qualitative research approach, which was exploratory-descriptive and contextual in nature, guided the researcher to explore and describe the beliefs and practices of Sotho antenatal women.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the Sotho antenatal women as well as traditional birth attendants.
Six themes emerged from the study through the interviews:
 the nature of pregnancy
 prescriptive practices
 restrictive practices
 sexual activity
 the practice of clinic attendants
 the practice of attending traditional birth attendants / Health Studies / M.A (Department of Health Studies)

The Didascalies as sign-system in three dramas by M.S. SeruduVan der Merwe, A. P. (Anna Petronella) 11 1900 (has links)
The dynamic nature of drama is reflected in the inherent dichotomous composition of text and performance. The continuing controversy about the infrequent public performances of the almost 250 published texts in African languages and the literary approach towards Northern Sotho texts have prompted the present survey. Two main reasons are identified for the existing textual centricity in the approach towards Northern Sotho dramas, namely text-external and text-internal factors. The latter forms the main focus of attention in this study. The role of the didascalies as semiotic sign-system - referring to all aspects of the dramatic text which contain instructions
for a potential performance - are investigated. The scrutiny of the stage directions afforded an unequalled vantage point in revealing the ostensive or performance nature of the three dramas by M.S. Serudu.
In conclusion possible solutions for the future are offered against the background of the findings arrived at in the analysis. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)

The translation of persuasive advertisements from English into Sepedi: the effect of linguistic and cultural anisomorphism.Mokgomole, Koketso Eugene. January 2015 (has links)
M. Tech. Language Practice / The activity of translation has a long-standing tradition and has been widely practiced throughout history, but in the rapidly changing world, its role has become of paramount importance. Advertising, as the engine of commerce, plays a critical role in the success of a company in this increasingly commercialized society. He further points out that in the age of global economy, effective translations can be crucial when businesses are targeting a foreign market. The purpose of the study was to explore the effect translation has on the "persuasiveness" of an advertisement, or what is left thereof, after it has been translated from the source language into the target language - in this case from English to Sepedi. Specifically, the study sought to identify a workable approach within which a translator can maximally operate in translating persuasive advertisements from English to Sepedi.

SABC news in Sotho languages: A case study in translationMmaboko, Elliott Mogobe 08 November 2006 (has links)
Student Number: 9603346N.
Master of Arts in Translation.
School of Literature and Language Studies / This research focuses on the translation of the South African Broadcasting
Corporation’s (SABC) news bulletins from English into Sotho languages, particularly
Sepedi. The main aim of this study is to analyse the strategies, methods and approaches
used by the translators. The study also tests Stephen Maphike’s 1992 hypothesis which
states that the news translators translate literally or word for word, instead of translating
conceptually. In order to achieve these aims both the English and Sotho versions of the
news were recorded over a period of approximately two weeks, from 22nd September to
5th October 2003.
The study falls within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies, and the
analysis is based on translation theories and strategies proposed by authors such as
Mona Baker (1992), Peter Newmark (1991), Christiane Nord (1991 & 1997) and
Gideon Toury (1980).
The conclusions drawn regarding the appropriateness or otherwise of the strategies used
are intended to increase an awareness of the problems involved and the solutions
available to translators.

The impact of pronominalisation on communication with special reference to Northern SothoMoabelo, Daniel Boy January 2003 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (African Languages)) --University of Limpopo, 2003 / Chapter l deals with a general introduction to the research paper. It gives th
background to the problem, aim, rationale, significance, methodology an organisation of the research paper. Different definitions on nouns, verbs subject, object and predicate are outlined in this chapter.
Chapter 2 gives an outline of pronominalisation processes. The definition o deletion as a
pronominal strategy is outlined. Substitution as a pronomina strategy is also discussed. The importance of these strategies is outlined, that i the difference between deletion and substitution is outlined fully.
Chapter 3 discusses the syntactic environments in which pronominalisatio takes place. The pronominalisation of the subject and the object is outlined.
Chapter 4 analyses the pronominalisation of the determiners. Demonstrative
determiners, deictic determiners, demonstrative pronouns, quantitative and qualificative pronouns used as determiners are brought into perspective. Because of the incorporation of the semantic component, the notion contrastiveness and emphasis are brought to the surface.
Chapter 5 gives the conclusion of this research paper. A summary of the findings and
recommendations of the chapters dealt with in the previous chapters is given.
