A model to forecast the impact of road accessibility on the economic development potential of industrial land in urban areasBotes, Francois Jacobus January 2003 (has links)
Dissertation (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The dissertation firstly outlines the findings of recent studies that have recorded the relationship
between transport and economic development. This includes the assessment of a number of
economic evaluation techniques that are available to predict the impact of improvements in
transport on economic development.
An historic overview is provided of the role that transport has played in the development of Cape
Town. Due to the fact that the phases of development followed international development trends, it
is concluded that development in Cape Town will follow the global trend. A number of economic
growth scenarios are developed for Cape Town to assess how the City will be able to cope with the
socio-demographic challenges facing it in the next century.
The relationship between land price and the economic development potential of land is outlined, as
are the factors that determine industrial land price, namely the demand and supply of industrial
land. The process of determining the economic value of industrial land is described. This includes
the collection and analysis of occupation rent of industrial townships in Cape Town, the calculation
of property values and the calculation of the shadow price of land.
A procedure of determining accessibility to industrial townships in Cape Town was developed.
Firstly, accessibility was defined in broad terms. This was followed by a discussion of each of the
elements of accessibility namely proximity, access and mobility in order to understand the factors
that may impact on the level of accessibility. Finally, the level of accessibility is quantified in terms
of generalised cost.
A regression analysis was undertaken to establish a statistical relationship between the economic
value of industrial land and accessibility to the industrial townships. The development of a
numerical model was based on the regression analyses to forecast changes in industrial land price
given a change in accessibility. The model was then tested on a case study.
The main conclusions of the study are as follows:
(a) The accessibility of industrial land in Cape Town is linked closely to its CSD I Port (it was
not possible to separate the CSD and the port), which is typical of a monocentric city
structure.
(b) There is a positive, significant, quantifiable relationship between accessibility as quantified
by means of generalised cost and the economic value of industrial land, which was
calculated by means of the shadow price technique.
(c) There are a number of conditions that should be met for an increase in local industrial
production potential to be translated into an equal amount of economic output.
Kaapstad. Eerstens is toeganklikheid in breë trekke gedefinieër.
gevallestudie toegepas.
ontwikelingspotensiaal sal lei.

The faith based organization response to HIV/AIDS : a case study of the JL Zwane Memorial Church in Guguletu, Cape TownXapile, Nobis Bridget Zethu 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is very common to talk about or refer to people as “People Living with HIV/AIDS”
but never “A Church with Aids”. Responding to HIV/AIDS has earned the JL Zwane
Memorial Church this name or rather this label. Members of the congregation, many of
them young, were dying and remaining silent, not doing anything, would have meant
contributing to the disaster that had struck. Something drastic had to be done to respond
to the pandemic or else the whole community would have perished.
This was not easy as it meant risking losing those already in the church. To many people,
HIV/AIDS was seen as a punishment from God to those who have sinned. For this
reason many did not want to have anything to do with People Living with HIV/AIDS.
The whole response is driven by the needs of the community i.e. those infected and
those affected. This means listening to people tell their stories and then respond
accordingly. Listening is the key in the response as the whole response revolves around
people and their experiences.
MIV positief is.
daargestel is.

Strategies to address auditory perceptual deficits in a school of skills in the northern suburbs of Cape TownJacobs, Jacqueline Rose 04 1900 (has links)
The aim of this action research was to investigate how auditory perceptual deficits affect reading in learners with disabilities. The sub-questions were: What auditory perceptual deficits learners’ experience? How do educators assist learners with auditory perceptual deficits? What instructional strategies and classroom management can educators apply to assist learners with auditory perceptual skills? The data collections comprised of an informal oral assessment, observation and anecdotal notes with fifteen participants with barriers to learning, from the English first year class, within a special needs educational setting. Data analysis and validity were supported by triangulation through informal assessment, observation, my critical friend and my own critical reflection. The support of phonologic, memory, and cohesion skills, auditory skills were the reading educational construct and strategies used as intervention in order to identify the efficacy of said interventions. Both bottom-up and top-down support strategies were used in relation to the participants’ individualised educational needs. The research results and discussion included methods to improve reading and listening skills in the classroom environment. / Inclusive Education / M. Ed. (Inclusive Education)

Professional migrants in Cape Town : identity, culture and communityShea, Lenri 31 March 2008 (has links)
Before the 1990's, African migrants did not perceive South Africa as an ideal migration destination. This changed after the end of the apartheid era. The new political climate in the country and the new migration movements linked to increased globalisation changed the situation significantly. South Africa became an attractive migration destination, particularly also for professional African migrants.
In this dissertation a select group of black professional/skilled migrants from non-SADC countries, who are resident in Cape Town, are studied. It is shown that such transients defy any migration typology within the South African context. Their position in the world of economic migrants is not automatically one of cosmopolitanism, privilege and glamour. Their decision to migrate is also not necessarily voluntary.
The explication and analysis of the context and circumstances of the migrants are conducted with specific reference to:
- professional mobility vis a vis identity, culture and community
- human mobility and globalisation
- the demographics and legalities of immigration to South Africa
- origin, identity and the construct of `home'
- the `host' nation and perceptions, stereotypes and xenophobia
- personal networks and adaptation
- the notion of space becoming place.
What is thus demonstrated and interrogated is that `belonging' in this world is a process of change and fluctuation. `Crossing borders' will mean different things to different people - especially also for skilled/professional migrants. Issues such as class, gender, race, citizenship, ethnicity and sexuality, play a role in how `belonging' is defined and how people assign meaning to movements across borders. / Anthropology and Archaeology / (MA (Anthropology))

Assessment of patient's satisfaction with the health care services provided by the Crossroads Community Health Care CentreVan Niekerk, Pearl Christine 10 1900 (has links)
The study aimed to explore and described the assessment of patient’s satisfaction with the quality of health care services rendered by the Crossroads Community Health Centre (CHCC). The target population comprised of adult male and female patients who have attended the clinic more than once. One hundred and twenty patients participated in the study. The convenience sampling method was used to select the respondents. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Validity and reliability were ensured. The Chronbach’s alpha reliability test was used to measure the internal consistency of the likert scale questionnaire items and was less than 0.4 for sections B-F, and 0.675 for section E. Descriptive and inferential data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 16.0 for Windows, release 16.0.1 with the assistance of a statistician. The findings indicated a positive perception of the quality of health care services rendered by the Crossroads CHCC. It was concluded that despite a positive perception of the health care services, there was a percentage of the respondents that rated the quality of the service as poor in relation to environmental cleanliness, staff attitudes, long waiting times, medications shortage, the complaints system reporting and health care service drainage to other CHCC where patient’s resided. The issue of quality improvement in these aspects was noted to be crucial and recommendations were made to improve the quality of the health care service at Crossroads CHCC. / Healh Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

The experiences of critical nurses regarding staffing management in critical care units in private hospitals of the Cape MetropoleAnthonie, Ramona F. G. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MCurr)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Nurse managers are responsible to staff different hospital units and departments with sufficient, trained and experienced personnel. Most critical care units in the private healthcare in South Africa are staffed below maximum workload levels and additional staff is supplemented when needed.
Current staffing management strategies comprises the application of the patient acuity score, the utilisation of contracted agency staff and ward staff who assist occasionally in the critical care unit (CCU). The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of critical care nurses regarding staffing management within critical care units in private health care institutions in the Western Cape. The following objectives were set to:
- explore the experiences of CCNs regarding staffing management strategies such as
o the patient acuity score
o the employment of ad hoc agency staff and
o the utilization of ward staff
A descriptive design with a qualitative approach was applied. A sample size of n=15 was drawn from a total population of N=377, using purposive sampling technique. A pilot-test was also completed. The trustworthiness of this study was assured with the use of Lincoln and Guba’s criteria of credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability. All ethical principles were met.
The findings of the study demonstrated that nurses perceive the workload in critical care units as heavy. The utilisation of the acuity score does not really assist in relieving the workload as managers tend not to consider the staffing requirements as predicted by the acuity score due to budget constraints. The enrolled nurses who assist occasionally in the critical care unit require supervision as well as ongoing development to ensure safe and quality patient care. Yet agency nurses were perceived as either extraordinary good or incompetent.
’n Beskrywende kwalitatiewe studie is toegepas.
Die agentskapverpleegpersoneel is egter as baie bekwaam of onbevoeg beskou.

Studying science and engineering at UCT : students' background, experience of science an reasons for studying science or engineeringLaugksch, Diane 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is the contention of this study that competence in science and mathematics is a
necessary condition for access to higher education, but that it is a general interest in
science that will inspire learners to pursue careers in science and technology. The
objective of this study was to develop a profile of the individual who chooses to study
science and engineering. The three research questions were, firstly, what is the
background profile of a group of learners who have decided to study science and
engineering? Secondly, what are the characteristic features of the school-science
experience of these learners? Lastly, what are the factors that learners think most
influenced their decision to study science and engineering?
This study was formulated as having a descriptive purpose and hence a survey
research design was used. Self-reported retrospective data were collected using a
questionnaire which was designed with reference to a number of sources (e.g.,
Woolnough, 1994). After piloting the questionnaire, it was administered to all firstyear
students registered in the faculties of Science and Engineering at the University
of Cape Town. A total of 204 first-year science and 247 first-year engineering
students formed the final sample of this study.
Quantitative analysis of the students’ responses showed that 66% of respondents
were male. The majority of female students were registered in the science faculty.
English was the home language of 55% of the sample, with 32% of students reported
speaking one of the other nine official languages at home. Parents, career
counselors and teachers most influenced students’ decision to study science or
engineering. The vast majority of respondents took Physical Science at school.
Students’ experiences of school science were diverse. Students’ responses generally
reflected a poor commitment on the part of schools to expose students to noncurriculum
activities generally thought to promote an interest in science. Overall, the
majority of students reflected an enthusiasm for learning to do science through
scientific experiments, albeit with preference for a teacher-driven approach to
classroom activities. Personal motivation, receiving a bursary, and access to
information were the main factors that students said influenced their decision to study
science and engineering. While information received at a careers open day and
participating in a school science competition was crucial for science students, engineering students showed a general curiosity for science, for knowing how things
work, and for creating and designing things. For most African students information
received at a careers open day was important, while a curiosity for science and
receiving a bursary were equally important in influencing non-African students to
pursue further study in science or engineering.
The results of this study suggest that what parents say, and the information that
learners have access to, is important to the decisions that learners make in regard to
future careers in science and engineering. It is suggested that future strategies for
promoting science in general must include parents, teachers and senior learners in
the dissemination of general information about science, about people in science,
about using science in everyday life, and about the possibilities for further study in
science and engineering.
ingenieurswese kies as studierigting.
navorsingsontwerp gebruik. Selfgerapporteerde retrospektiewe data is ingesamel
bronne (bv., Woolnough, 1994).
respondente manlik is. Die meerderheid vroulike studente was geregistreer in die
natuurwetenskappe fakulteit.

An evaluation of the management of deoxyrinucleic acid (DNA) evidence / An evaluation of the management of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) evidenceDywaba, Zukiswa Morencia 09 1900 (has links)
DNA is identified as a powerful tool in the solving of rape cases, but it is often destroyed either by members of the public or the police officials who attend to the scene.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the management of DNA evidence in rape cases in the Bishop Lavis Policing Area. To address the research topic under investigation, research questions, a legal framework and policies were used.
The outcome of the study indicated poor performance in securing the crime scene and ensuring that physical evidence is preserved and not tampered with. On this basis, it was recommended that developmental workshops and intensive training on the management of DNA evidence be conducted to all members of the South African Police Service attend to rape crime scenes. This should be done to equip them with knowledge and an understanding of the management of DNA evidence. / Police Practice / M. Tech. (Forensic Investigation)

GIS mapping and analysis of aircraft noise at Cape Town International AirportVon Holdt, Diana (Diana Sheila) 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The noise produced by aircraft during operations around airports represents a senous social,
technical, economic and environmental problem which is only going to get worse as air traffic
volumes increase. Rapid urbanisation, development encroachment and poor planning in the past
have resulted in noisy airport runways being situated too close to residents' living space. Rapid
industrial growth and lack of funding exacerbate noise problems in developing countries. Moreover,
developing countries and especially South Africa tend to have moderate climates and open-window
living, which makes insulation an ineffective solution to the noise problem.
This study aims at employing GIS to establish the potential noise exposure of various sensitive land
use categories and population groups in the noise-controlled area at Cape Town International
Airport. Firstly, options for the demarcation of a noise-controlled area were evaluated. Thereafter,
incompatible land uses and priority areas for land use compatibility projects were identified and
recommendations made for urban renewal projects for these areas. Lastly, the noise-exposed
population were profiled according to vulnerability characteristics and vulnerable groups identified
and located.
A recommendation was made that Cape Town International Airport set up an interactive map-based
website to disseminate information to the public about noise and any other important issues
concerning the airport. An Internet GIS application would empower citizens by providing them with
a dynamic and interactive tool for improved public participation and a better understanding of the
potential environmental and socio-economic effects of the airport. Noise complaints could also be
investigated through the website and prompt feedback given to the communities complaining about
aircraft noise.
At the local community level where people are being annoyed every day and night resulting in
negative health effects, the problem of aircraft noise demands urgent attention, and measures should
be put in place to reduce vulnerability to noise and improve the overall quality of life of noiseweary
residents.
Keywords: aircraft noise, noise mapping, noise-controlled area, noise contours, land use
compatibility, noise exposure / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die geraas veroorsaak deur vliegtuie by lughawens bied ernstige sosiale, tegniese, ekonomiese en
omgewingsprobleme, wat net erger gaan raak namate vlugverkeer toeneem. Snelle verstedeliking,
befondsing vererger geraasprobleme in ontwikkelende lande.
Inwoners.
