Sustainopreneurship - Business with a Cause : Conceptualizing Entrepreneurship for SustainabilityAbrahamsson, Anders January 2007 (has links)
This thesis presents a tentative definition of the concept of sustainopreneurship - in the most simplified form described as entrepreneurship and innovation for sustainability - “Business with a Cause”. The concept takes its departure from generic entrepreneurship theory development, its extensions and further contextualization into the domains of sustainability, primarily through recent research. A literature review provides core references related to the conceptualization of sustainability entrepreneurship. A claim is made that there is a need for further conceptual development, especially viewed in contrast to the empirical material and experience, when digesting the literature that deals with concepts preceding sustainopreneurship. These concepts are eco-preneurship and social entrepreneurship, as well as current descriptions of sustainability entrepreneurship, including some sources where the word sustainopreneurship in itself is introduced for the first time. The methodological approach used when conducting the literature review is an analytical stance. Additional analysis, integrating and extending the reviewed sources, leads us to a performative definition of sustainopreneurship. This tentative definition is presented as an imagined prospective wordbook entry in a “future history” format. One of the key distinctions in between entrepreneurship in general and sustainopreneurship, is that sustainopreneurship is mission- and cause oriented - business activity is used as a means to solve sustainability-related problems. In short, to turn business activity from being a part of the problem to be a part of the solution. This world of ideas is set in contrast to the practical enaction of On a Mission Sweden – Inc. Ass, and the seven brands developed from this business platform – Club PuLS™, DJ Anders, SEEDS Sustainability Investment Fund, SEEDS Magazine, Ignition®, SLICE Services and Publishing™ and S*E*N*S*A. Three of these only reached conceptual stage for future potential launch. Four got established, and of these; one idle, two spun off in their own ventures, and one intended to spin off during 2007. Entrepreneurship as a concept to describe the nature of these ventures was experienced as insufficient, until 2003, when the concept of “sustainopreneurship” was found by serendipity. The conceptual dissatisfaction with “entrepreneurship-as-usual”, together with finding this new concept, made me instantly embrace this concept in the moment when stumbled upon. Another major driver for this work is a strong aspiration to take the abstract, general words and statements from world summits and conferences to the practical, hands on, down to earth, grass-root, local level with real world interaction to make possibilities of the problems related to the sustainability agenda. The ventures created from a time span of over seven years, forms a vast, deep, dense, intense and extremely rich “gross” empirical base from where the study collects its selective “net” material relevant for this study. The methodological approach to make sense and use of these serial and parallel self-initiated and self-experienced venturing processes is enactive research. The enactive research provides an opportunity to test the suggested formulation of sustainopreneurship – from the abstract idea to the concrete interaction. A special form of ethnography is used named self-ethnography. The ventures who have proven to perpetually evolve, develop and sustain are focused; On a Mission Sweden – Inc. Ass. and Ignition®. These ventures have provided the most significant change in both idea development, practice, and effect - both regards my inner world of insight breakthroughs and personal development, and the findings on a more abstract, conceptual, theoretical level. In order to highlight the three key dimensions of the concept, some key courses of events have been selected where they are considered to hold illustrative power: Firstly, the central events before the formalized venturing. Secondly, the milestones singled out during the venturing. Thirdly, some post-venture reflections around the process as such. The ethnographic style of the tales of the field is predominantly realist, with some degree impressionist. The final chapter summarizes and presents an intermediary conclusion whether the concept has met the test and also discusses the meaning of the exercise as a whole. My own function is examined and evaluated briefly. The promise of the conceptual introduction is contrasted towards the approaches-as-usual regards the sustainability agenda that introduced the thesis, and some key points are delivered. Venturing in the name of sustainability allows agents to “act outside the box” related to the institutional framework that governs the structures that is set to solve the problems today, equipped with an upgraded mindset, operating with an agility made possible by the flexibility offered by creative business organizing. The quest to make (business) opportunities from the agenda set by sustainability, and organizing upon them in itself creates a sustaining meaning internally within the team to be able to ride through the storms – the same force traditionally driving NGO’s “not-for profit”, now coupled with a good business sense operating “for-profit”, with profit as a means, not as an end in itself - in a new in-between-land named “for prosperity”. When properly understood from knowledge increasing among other stakeholders than the sustainopreneurial teams and their closest supporters and early adopters, the welcoming of sustainopreneurial ventures are destined to increase. Proliferation and diffusion of sustainopreneurship in idea, applied interaction and reflective practice beyond this point can turn sustainability to be the main driver for business activity, internalizing the external sustainability demands as the primary purpose of the business creation and idea, forming its strategic intent, and integrated in its “organizational DNA”. Sustainopreneurship holds the power to give even more leverage to forces emerging from the business world that contributes to sustainability. Throughout the process, a question has been emerging to serve as a new opening for further interaction, where the claim is that sustainopreneurship delivers a good part of the answer; How can we innovate and interact in order to reach a critical mass of people and energies to create a sustainable world?

Die Verknüpfung von geodätischen Raumtechniken wie GNSS, DORIS, SLR oder VLBI zur Ableitung eines geodätischen Referenzrahmens wie dem ITRF gelingt erst durch sogenannte Kolokationsstationen. Die geometrischen Beziehungen zwischen den betriebenen Raumtechniken sind dabei aus präzisen lokalen Vermessungen abzuleiten. Es wird ein Konzept zur automatisierten Bestimmung des IVS-Referenzpunktes am TWIN Radioteleskop Wettzell vorgestellt. Erste Untersuchungsergebnisse werden präsentiert.

Analyzing the adaption of energy optimization modules in HVAC systems : A case study within Sweden’s commercial marketTiwari, Shashank Prasad, Potluri, Sumanth January 2020 (has links)
This study has been motivated by an understanding of the twin needs to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase the access to have complete control of the ventilation system available in the buildings. In consideration of the increasing utilization of fossil fuels, there is an extensive threat of increased global warming conditions associated. To ensure sustainable development, improvement of social welfare and wealth creation, energy is an essential factor. The consumption of electricity and energy delivered per floor area in Sweden has been considerably rising since 2014. The aim of this study is twofold where the authors have mapped and defined the specific customer needs for choosing an “add-on energy optimization module” for the existing HVAC systems in Sweden’s commercial market. Secondly, the study has also focussed to identify the acceptance of the complementary good technology from the perspective of a customer’s experience of value creation. It is a case study carried out in collaboration with a Swedish cleantech company, that will be named “Company-X” in the further part of the study. This company utilises a part of space technology to secure a healthy indoor air climate and at the same time save energy in buildings. The thesis has been carried out qualitatively. Since there is a preunderstanding of this theory where an abductive approach with semi-structured interviews has been followed to perceive the current market situation. The study further underlines the importance and need of making investments for a cleaning module combined with an optimization algorithm which can be easily mounted on current ventilation systems like Lego pieces. Under this module, the air quality is monitored, and the system adapts to current conditions concerning time. The results designate that it is possible to maintain a predefined indoor air quality to the lowest possible energy consumption by real-time monitoring with this cleaning module at facilities that are equipped with single or multiple-split HVAC systems. The best results towards attaining greater energy savings can be obtained from the association of Building energy management system and Air-handling unit with this cleaning module.

Predictive Controllers for Load Transportation in Microgravity EnvironmentsPhodapol, Sujet January 2023 (has links)
Space activities have been increasing dramatically in the past decades. As a result, the number of space debris has also increased significantly. Therefore, it is necessary to clean up and remove them to prevent a collision between space debris and spacecraft. In this thesis, we focus on load transportation using tethers, which connect multiple robots and loads together with lightweight cables. We propose a generalized framework to model and calculate the interaction force for the tethered multi-robot system. Then, we develop centralized and decentralized non-linear Model Predictive Control (MPC) controllers to complete a transportation task. Two simulators, a numerical and physical simulator, are presented and used to evaluate the performance of the controllers. The numerical simulator is used to verify the proposed model and evaluate the controllers for the ideal case. The physical simulator is then used to validate the performance of both centralized and decentralized controllers in real-time settings. Finally, we demonstrate how the proposed controllers perform in two and three-dimensional experiments. / Rymdaktiviteter har ökat dramatiskt under de senaste årtiondena. Som en följd av detta har mängden rymdskräp också ökat avsevärt. Därför är det nödvändigt att rensa upp och avlägsna detta skräp för att förhindra kollisioner mellan rymdskräp och rymdfarkoster. I denna rapport fokuserar vi på transporter av rymdobjekt som är sammanbundna via en lätt kabel. Vi föreslår en allmän metod för att modellera och beräkna interaktionskraften för det förenade multirobotsystemet. Sedan utvecklar vi centraliserad och decentraliserad icke-linjär modell-prediktiv reglering, MPC (eng. Model Predictive Control), för att uppnå transportuppgiften. Två simulatorer, en numerisk och en fysisk simulator, presenteras och används för att utvärdera styrsystemets prestanda. Den numeriska simuleringen används för att verifiera den föreslagna modellen och utforma styrsystemet för det idealiska fallet. Den fysiska simuleringen används sedan för att validera prestandan för både det centraliserade och decentraliserade styrsystem i realtid. Slutligen demonstrerar vi hur de föreslagna styrsystemen utför sig i tre- respektive två-dimensionella experiment.

El efecto multipactor de ruptura en RF ha sido objeto de numerosos estudios desde
hace más de 80 años, a partir del desarrollo de los primeros aceleradores de partículas en
la primera mitad del siglo XX. A mediados de ese siglo, con el desarrollo de fuentes de alta
potencia para aplicaciones radar y la llegada de los satélites artificiales, la investigación del
multipactor cobró una considerable relevancia, al convertirse este fenómeno en un riesgo
determinante para costosos proyectos comerciales. Las guías de onda con secciones rectas
canónicas, como las rectangulares o las coaxiales, han sido tradicionalmente las más utilizadas
en dispositivos de microondas. Sus principales ventajas son que sus campos electromagnéticos pueden resolverse analíticamente, lo que permite su aplicación directa en diseños
complejos, y la simplicidad de su fabricación. Pero las capacidades de computación y las
prestaciones de los algoritmos se han multiplicado con los años, lo que ha permitido ampliar
el espectro de posibles topologías a geometrías casi arbitrarias, ofreciendo al diseñador una
mayor libertad creativa. En todo caso, gran parte de los dispositivos de microondas actuales
siguen confiando en la madurez y fiabilidad de las tecnologías de guía de onda tradicionales,
que no requieren una inversión adicional en equipos de fabricación. La supresión del efecto
multipactor es la motivación para arriesgarse a probar topologías de guía de onda innovadoras,
como la guía en forma de cuña.
Es en este contexto donde este trabajo de doctorado pretende ofrecer una contribuci'on.
En primer lugar, se ha desarrollado un modelo numérico para predecir el efecto multipactor
de ruptura en guías de onda huecas en forma de cuña. Esta herramienta ha permitido la
identificación de criterios óptimos de diseño. Así mismo, se ha adaptado un método de
síntesis de filtros paso-banda en guía rectangular para poder realizar un diseño similar pero
basado en la nueva topología. Como culminación, las estructuras diseñadas se han fabricado
y medido, con el fin de comprobar sus prestaciones electromagnéticas y su sensibilidad al
efecto multipactor. Se ha registrado además una patente para proteger estos nuevos filtros.
En resumen, el trabajo ha abarcado el ciclo de actividades relacionadas con el desarrollo
industrial completo de un dispositivo pasivo de microondas: investigación básica, análisis,
diseño, fabricación y calificación con medidas en el laboratorio.
Estas medidas han comprobado la mejora prevista en los umbrales de multipactor de los
filtros de microondas con topología en forma de cu¿na, y han confirmado que pueden ofrecer
respuestas en frecuencia similares a aquellas de filtros basados en una guía de onda rectangular
equivalente. Las implicaciones de los resultados han sido evaluadas a fondo y resumidas en este documento. Como observación final, se ha intentado redactar esta investigación de
manera que refleje el proceso natural de aprendizaje, mostrando los aciertos y errores experimentados
en el camino, todos los cuales han conducido al resultado final. Este reto no

years, since the development of the first particle accelerators in the beginning of the 20th
century. Around the middle of that century, with the development of high power sources for
radar applications and with the emergence of the artificial satellites, a new impulse was given
to the multipactor research, since it became a risk for expensive commercial projects. Traditionally,
waveguides with canonical cross sections, like rectangular or coaxial ones, have
been the building blocks of most microwave devices. Their main advantages are that their
electromagnetic fields can be solved analytically, enabling their direct application in complex
designs, as well as their manufacturing simplicity. But over the years the computation
capabilities and algorithms have continuously evolved, which has broadened the spectrum
of possible topologies to almost arbitrary geometries, offering the designer more room for
creativity. However, most of the current microwave devices still trust on the mature canonical
waveguide technologies, which do not require an additional investment in manufacturing
equipment. The suppression of the multipactor effect is the motivation for considering an
innovative waveguide topology, like the wedge-shaped waveguide.
It is within this context where this PhD work aims to offer a contribution. On the one
hand, a numerical model for predicting the multipactor breakdown effect in wedge-shaped
hollow waveguides has been developed. This tool has aided in the derivation of optimised
design criteria. On the other hand, a bandpass filter synthesis method for rectangular waveguide
has been adapted in order to calculate a similar design based on the new topology. As
a culmination, the designed structures have been manufactured and tested, in order to verify
their electromagnetic performance and their multipactor sensibility. A patent was also filed
to protect these new filters. In short, this work has comprised the cycle of activities related
to the whole industrial development of a passive microwave device: basic research, analysis,
design, manufacturing and qualification through testing.
These measurements have verified the predicted improvement in the multipactor thresholds
of microwave filters with wedge-shaped topology, and have confirmed that they can
offer similar frequency responses to the equivalent rectangular waveguide ones. The implications
of the results have been thoroughly evaluated and summarised in this document. As a
final remark, this research document has been drafted to reflect the natural learning process,
and to show the rights and wrongs experienced in the way, which all have led to the final result.

On solving the view selection problem in distributed data warehouse architecturesLehner, Wolfgang, Bauer, Andreas 02 June 2022 (has links)
The use of materialized views in a data warehouse installation is a common tool to speed up mostly aggregation queries. The problems coming along with materialized aggregate views have triggered a huge variety of proposals, such as picking the optimal set of aggregation combinations, transparently rewriting user queries to take advantage of the summary data, or synchronizing pre-computed summary data as soon as the base data changes. The paper focuses on the problem of view selection in the context of distributed data warehouse architectures. While much research was done with regard to the view selection problem in the central case, we are not aware to any other work discussing the problem of view selection in distributed data warehouse systems. The paper proposes an extension of the concept of an aggregation lattice to capture the distributed semantics. Moreover, we extend a greedy-based selection algorithm based on an adequate cost model for the distributed case. Within a performance study, we finally compare our findings with the approach of applying a selection algorithm locally to each node in a distributed warehouse environment.

Etude photométrique des lunes glacées de Jupiter / Photometric study of Jupiter's moonsBelgacem, Ines 15 November 2019 (has links)
Les satellites glacés de Jupiter sont d'un grand intérêt scientifique dans la recherche d'habitabilité au sein de notre système solaire. Elles abritent probablement toutes trois des océans d'eau liquide sous leur croûte glacée. Leurs surfaces présentent différents stades d’évolution – celle de Callisto est très ancienne et entièrement recouverte de cratères, celle de Ganymede est un mélange de terrains sombres et cratérisés et de plaines claires et plus jeunes et la surface d’Europa est la plus jeune et présente des signes d’activité récente. Cette thèse porte sur la photométrie, c’est à dire l’étude de l’énergie lumineuse réfléchie par une surface, en fonction des géométries d’éclairement et d’observation. Les études photométriques permettent de déterminer l’état physique et la microtexture des surfaces (porosité, structure interne, forme des grains, rugosité, transparence…). Une bonne connaissance photométrique est également d'une importance cruciale dans la correction des jeux de données pour toute étude cartographique ou spectroscopique ainsi que pour les futures missions de cette décennie : Europa Clipper de la NASA et JUpiter ICy Moons Explorer de l’ESA.Deux types d’information sont nécessaires pour réaliser une étude photométrique : des données de réflectance et des données géométriques (conditions d’illumination et d'observation). Pour obtenir les premières, nous avons utilisé et calibré des images de missions spatiales passées - Voyager, New Horizons et Galileo. Pour obtenir les secondes, nous avons développé des outils permettant de corriger les métadonnées de ces images (ex : la position et l'orientation des sondes) afin d’obtenir des informations géométriques précises. Nous avons, d’autre part, développé un outil d’inversion pour estimer les paramètres photométriques de Hapke sur des régions d’Europa, Ganymede et Callisto sur l’ensemble du jeu de données en un seul calcul. Enfin, nous discutons des liens possibles entre les paramètres photométriques estimés, la microtexture de la surface et les processus endogènes/exogènes mis en jeu. / Jupiter's icy moons are of great interest in the search for habitability in our Solar System. They probably all harbor liquid water ocean underneath their icy crust. Their surfaces present different stages of evolution – Callisto is heavily cratered and the oldest, Ganymede shows a combination of dark cratered terrain and younger bright plains and Europa’s surface is the youngest with signs of recent and maybe current activity. This work focuses on photometry, i.e. the study of the light scattered by a surface in relation to the illumination and observation geometry. Photometric studies give us insight on the physical state and microtexture of the surface (compaction, internal structure, shape, roughness, transparency…). A good photometric knowledge is also of crucial importance in the correction of datasets for any mapping or spectroscopic study as well as for the future missions of this decade – NASA’s Europa Clipper and ESA’s JUpiter ICy moons Explorer.Two pieces of information are necessary to conduct a photometric study – reflectance data and geometric information (illumination, viewing conditions). For the former, we have used and calibrated images from past space missions – Voyager, New Horizons and Galileo. For the latter, we have developed tools to correct these images metadata (e.g. spacecraft position and orientation) to derive precise geometric information. Moreover, we have developed a Bayesian inversion tool to estimate Hapke’s photometric parameters on regions of Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. We estimate all parameters on our entire dataset at once. Plasma Burner: Numerical Modeling of Plasma Generation and FlowColmenares, Julian, Ghazi, Diyar January 2021 (has links)
Technological evolution and mass production is impacting the Earth daily due to global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions, where the biggest factor is the emission of carbon dioxide mostly caused by the burning of fossil fuel and industrial processes. Therefore, alternatives for substituting the use of fossil fuel in industries are extremely important. This thesis project investigates the method of using plasma technology using a plasma burner which is electrically generated and could be an ideal solution for industrial metallurgical, chemical and mechanical processes due to its unique characteristics such as high energy densities, extremely high temperatures, rapid heating of surfaces and melting materials with a small installation size. Using the software COMSOL Multiphysics, a 2D model geometry is set up to simulate and investigate the behavior of the plasma burner by varying different parameters to improve the performance of the plasma burner. The results are based on simulations and no experiments were performed. However, we visited RISE ETC to observe and learn about the plasma burner model. At last, a geometry investigation was done by calculating the thermal efficiency to designate the most efficient geometry.
