MICRO-SCALE THERMO-MECHANICAL RESPONSE OF SHOCK COMPRESSED MOCK ENERGETIC MATERIAL AT NANO-SECOND TIME RESOLUTION

Abhijeet Dhiman (5930609) 11 March 2022 (has links)

Raman spectroscopy is a molecular spectroscopy technique that uses monochromatic light to provide a fingerprint to identify structural components and chemical composition. Depending on the changes in the unit-cell parameters and volume under the application of stress and temperature, the Raman spectrum undergoes changes in the wavenumber of Raman-active modes that allow identification of sample characteristics. Due to the various advantage of mechanical Raman spectroscopy (MRS), the use of this technique in the characterization and modeling of chemical changes under stress and temperature have gained popularity.

Quantitative information regarding the local behavior of interfaces in an inhomogeneous material during shock loading is limited due to challenges associated with time and spatial resolution. Recently, we have extended the use of MRS to high-strain rate experiments to capture the local thermomechanical response of mock energetic material and obtain material properties during shock wave propagation. This was achieved by developing a novel method for in‑situ measurement of the thermo‑mechanical response from mock energetic materials in a time‑resolved manner with 5 ns resolution providing an estimation on local pressure, temperature, strain rate, and local shock viscosity. The results show the solid to liquid phase transition of sucrose under shock compression. The viscous behavior of the binder was also characterized through measurement of shock viscosity at strain rates higher than 106/s using microsphere impact experiments.

This technique was further extended to perform Raman spectral imaging over a microscale domain of the sample with a nano-second resolution. This was achieved by developing a laser-array Raman spectral imaging technique where simultaneous deconvolution of Raman spectra over the sample domain was achieved and Raman spectral image was reconstructed on post-processing. We developed a Raman spectral imaging system using a laser array and analysis was performed over the interface of sucrose crystals bonded using an epoxy binder. This study provides the Raman spectra over the microstructure domain which enabled the detection of localized melting under shock compression. The distribution of shock pressure and temperature over the microstructure was obtained using mechanical Raman analysis. The study shows the effects of an actual interface on the propagation of shock waves where a higher dissipation of shock energy was observed compared to an ideal interface. This increase in shock dissipation is accompanied by a decrease in both the maximum temperature, as well as the maximum pressure within the microstructure during shock wave propagation.

Développement d’une méthode numérique pour les équations de Navier-Stokes en approximation anélastique : application aux instabilités de Rayleigh-Taylor / Developpement of a numerical method for Navier-Stokes equations in anelastic approximation : application to Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities

Hammouch, Zohra 30 May 2012 (has links)
The « anelastic » approximation allows us to filter the acoustic waves thanks to an asymptotic development of the Navier-Stokes equations, so increasing the averaged time step, during the numerical simulation of hydrodynamic instabilitiesdevelopment. So, the anelastic equations for a two fluid mixture in case of Rayleigh-Taylor instability are established. The linear stability of Rayleigh-Taylor flow is studied, for the first time, for perfect fluids in the anelastic approximation. We define the Stokes problem resulting from Navier-Stokes equations without the non linear terms (a part of the buoyancyis considered) ; the ellipticity is demonstrated, the eigenmodes and the invariance related to the pressure are detailed. The Uzawa’s method is extended to the anelastic approximation and shows the decoupling speeds in 3D, the particular casek = 0 and the spurius modes of pressure. Passing to multidomain allowed to establish the transmission conditions. The algorithms and the implementation in the existing program are validated by comparing the Uzawa’s operator inFortran and Mathematica langages, to an experiment with incompressible fluids and results from anelastic and compressiblenumerical simulations. The study of the influence of the initial stratification of both fluids on the development of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability is initiated.

This work uses the so-called derivative-free spectral algorithm for nonlinear equations in the simulation of flows in porous media. The model considered here is the one employed to describe the displacement of miscible compressible fluid in porous media with point sources and sinks, where the density of the fluid mixture varies exponentially with the pressure. The spectral algorithm used is a modern method for solving large-scale nonlinear systems, which does not solve linear systems, nor use any explicit information associated with the Jacobin matrix, being a Jacobian-free approach. Two dimensional problems are presented, along with numerical results comparing the spectral algorithm to a well-developed Jacobian-free inexact Newton method. The results of this paper show that this modern spectral algorithm is a reliable and efficient method for simulation of compressible flows in porous media.

Intégrité des tours aéroréfrigérantes en béton armé sous sollicitations extrêmes : Vent et séisme / Integrity of reinforced concrete cooling towers under extreme loads : Wind and Earthquake

Louhi, Amine 30 November 2015 (has links)
The authorities have planned to increase the lifetime of currently operating nuclear power plants. The ageing of reinforced concrete structures such as cooling towers should be evaluated and its impact on the bearing capacity calculated. In the case of significant damage, the strengthening must be considered to ensure the sustainability of these towers facing the risk of storms and earthquakes becoming more and more frequent. This work aims to quantify the adverse effects that can generate concrete cracks and rebar section loss induced by corrosion, especially on the bearing capacity of nuclear power plant cooling towers under monotonic or cyclic extreme load conditions (wind and earthquake). These loads are certainly the most severe, since they take the structure into the nonlinear domain and can induce or amplify cracking damage. Numerical simulations are proposed to determine the quasi-static or dynamic response of the structure, taking into account appearance of concrete cracks and their evolution via an appropriate material concrete law and rebar's yielding. In the case of a seismic load, the responses are evaluated by three different methods; the nonlinear response history analysis (NLRHA), the response spectrum analysis and the modal response history analysis (MRHA) in order to compare the earthquake modeling approaches and to evaluate the robustness of the results. Parametric studies on damping, load combinations and structural configurations, are also performed. In the case of a wind load, the strengthening technique using composite materials, such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is modeled. The behavior of the damaged structure with an advanced corrosion rate is estimated in the pre- and post-cracking regime, compared to the undamaged structure. The drop of bearing capacity is quantified, a reinforcement designed is proposed to restore the integrity and thus increase the lifetime of the structure.

Mesure de la température à l'échelle microscopique par voie optique dans la gamme ultraviolet-visible / Microscale temperature measurements by optical way in the ultraviolet-visible range

Pierre, Thomas 10 December 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study is to measure microscale temperature by optical way in the UV-visible range by photons counting using a cooled PMT. From the existing techniques advantages and disadvantages, this first part allows to understand the choices of this study. The second part shows and underlines the interest in working in short wavelengths (diffraction limit, measurement accuracy), in using the multi-spectral method to get rid of unknown parameters (e.g. emissivity) by choosing judicious working wavelengths, as well as the statistic laws to measure the photonic flux knowing its random emission. The third chapter presents the optical bench (optical microscope, photonic flux measurement facility…). A particularly attention is given to the design of the heated elements, which allow to calibrate the facility. The fourth part exposes the temperature results obtained through statistic laws. They validate the well-running of the facility, the microscopic area focusing, and the interest to model correctly the filters. Finally, measurement accuracy improvements (diffraction grating, multi-channel analyzer) and lower temperature measurement techniques (LIF, time-correlated method) are presented in the fifth part
