Representative task design in cricket batting

Stevenson, Karl January 2016 (has links)
In recent years researchers have argued that in order to fully understand perceptual cognitive expertise in sports, representative tasks must be used to preserve the tightly coupled links between perception and action that experts exploit. Previously, tasks have been considered as representative or not, with little evidence existing to indicate the degree to which a task is representative enough. This thesis primarily aimed to investigate experimentally representative tasks in cricket batting and the degree to which a laboratory-based task of cricket batting was able to represent batters’ emergent perceptuo-motor behaviour for perceiving bowlers’ delivery length. A secondary aim was to re-evaluate perceptuo-motor behaviours thought to contribute to skilled performance and their development. In chapter 2 skilled batsmen’s foot movements were recorded in response to balls bowled to a range of lengths under in situ and video-based laboratory conditions. Kinematic analyses quantified decision-making skill and movement scaling. Analyses revealed the laboratory condition to have a high degree of fidelity. Skilled batter’s Foot movements were reliably replicated and differences were found compared to a novice group. In chapter 3, response mode, occlusion condition and skill level were compared on the representative laboratory test developed in chapter 2. Analyses identified that skilled performance was only aided by maintaining coupled responses under occluded conditions, whilst no differences were observed under un-occluded conditions. Skilled performers were also shown to possess greater anticipation skills compared with novices under both coupled and un-coupled conditions. In Chapter 4, the effects of manipulating information present in situ, through simulated ball flight, and fully simulated training aids were compared in a novel experimental paradigm. Skilled batsmen faced deliveries across a range of lengths from a bowler (in situ), from a bowling machine (simulated ball flight) and from a ProBatter simulator (fully simulated action and ball flight). Results showed that simulated ball flight condition resulted in foot movements that were closer to in situ than the fully simulated condition, suggesting that if present, the link between bowling action and ball flight needs to be tightly coupled. These results demonstrate for the first time that representative tasks must not be considered unilaterally as representative or not, but instead the degree of representativeness should be quantified and evaluated against the expert behaviour under investigation. Determination of the degree of representativeness would allow researchers to apply findings to the performance environment with greater knowledge of their potential impact.

The influence of overseas coaching and management on the occupational subculture of English professional football

Smith, Graham January 2011 (has links)
As an area of academic and popular interest it is generally acknowledged that migrant British players and coaches were instrumental in football's global diffusion and that different technical and tactical emphases developed according to particular geographical locations and cultural milieu. As the twentieth century unfolded the trend reversed with increased inward flows of elite foreign playing and coaching labour into the upper tiers of UK football, challenging the distinctive and erstwhile dominant occupational culture of the English game. This study examines this process of sub-cultural adaptation. It is principally concerned with critical evaluation of the dynamics of occupational culture modification and any resultant tensions evidenced between expatriate and indigenous coaching talent and other interest groups operating within the higher echelons of English professional football.

Underground Men: Alternative Masculinities and the Politics of Performance in African American Literature and Culture

Gray, Jezy J. 05 1900 (has links)
This study explores intersections between performance, race and masculinity within a variety of expressive cultural contexts during and after the African American Civil Rights Movement. I maintain that the work of James Baldwin is best situated to help us navigate this cross section, as his fiction and cultural criticism focus heavily on the stage in all its incarnations as a space for negotiating the possibilities and limits of expressive culture in combating harmful racial narratives imposed upon black men in America. My thesis begins with a close reading of the performers populating his story collection Going to Meet the Man (1965) before broadening my scope in the following chapters to include analyses of the diametric masculinities in the world of professional boxing and the black roots of the American punk movement. Engaging with theorists like Judith Butler, bell hooks and Paul Gilroy, Underground Men attempts to put these seemingly disparate corners of American life into a dynamic conversation that broadens our understanding through a novel application of critical race, gender and performance theories. Baldwin and his orbiting criticism remain the hub of my investigation throughout, and I use his template of black genius performance outlined in works like Tell Me How Long the Train’s Been Gone (1967) and Just Above My Head (1977) to aid our understanding of how performance prescribes and scrambles dominant narratives about black men after the sexual revolution.

Sport, recreation and the workplace in England, c.1918-c.1970

Crewe, Steven January 2014 (has links)
Over the fifty years from the end of the First World War, the experience of work in England was increasingly shaped by a concern for industrial welfare which manifested itself in various forms. Large-scale employers, in both the manufacturing and service sectors, often saw the provision of sports and recreational facilities as an important aspect of their commitment to industrial welfare and as a way of maintaining harmonious industrial relations. Sport, along with various recreational activities, increasingly provided a way of encouraging workers to identify with their employer; it was as important in this respect as the company outing or the annual dance. This thesis seeks to build on the existing historiography relating to the ‘sports and social’ side of corporate industrial welfare. Whereas historians to date have focussed on single companies or on a particular sector, it examines four separate case studies – two (Robinsons of Chesterfield and Raleigh of Nottingham) located in the manufacturing sector and two (Lyons and the Bank of England) located primarily in the service sector – to provide an account of this aspect of industrial welfare that is cross-sector in its scope. Company magazines, which played an important part in sustaining clubs and societies by publishing their activities, are the principal primary source used in each case. While underpinning previous work which has emphasised the commitment of employers to industrial welfare, it is argued here that workers themselves had an important part to play in the making of sports and social provision in factories and offices and other places of work, such as the catering establishments and hotels run by Lyons. Often the role of management was simply to respond positively to suggestions made by employees, providing the strategic support that enabled an activity to take off and then sustain itself. In all four case studies here the day-to-day organisation of particular activities was usually undertaken by interested employees. Thus, the characteristics of works-based recreation in a particular workplace could be shaped as much by ‘bottom-up’ initiatives as it was by ‘top-down’ directives. This especially applied to the numerous hobby or interest-based societies – amateur dramatic societies, camera clubs and horticultural societies, for example – which were an important feature of works-based recreation. It is argued here that the importance of such activities has been underestimated in studies to date. They have attracted less attention than company commitment to sport, for example, which manifested itself in the provision of expensive facilities. Yet, clubs and societies which could appeal to employees beyond the age at which most were likely to engage in sport were a relatively inexpensive way of extending the reach of an organisation’s welfare strategy. Accordingly, they are given substantial coverage here.

Effect of shot type, task difficulty and research environment on consistency of pre-performance routines in golf

Cotterill, Stewart T. January 2007 (has links)
Golfers have been encouraged to develop consistent pre-performance routines (PPRs) in order to enhance their performance. However, the theoretical underpinning of these recommendations is unclear. Issues relating to the overall function(s) of the PPR, psychological components; routine usage across different shot types; and the impact of task difficulty on routine execution have yet to be explored in detail. The general purpose of this thesis was to quantify differences in the duration / composition of PPRs across shot types and task difficulty while developing a greater understanding of the psychological skills utilised and the function of the PPRs To achieve this general purpose four studies were completed. Study one (n=6, age M = 22.5yrs) explored the behavioural and temporal consistency of the PPRs utilised by the participants within shot type and across three different environmental conditions (competition, practice, and simulated). PPR behaviours were classified according to four categories (head, club, posture, still). The results revealed that the participants were very consistent in their routines and no significant differences were identified between environmental conditions. In Study two (n= 6, age M= 22.5years) the extent to which participants utilised different routines for different shots (putter, driver, wedge) as well as the impact of task difficulty on routine duration were explored. Significantly different routines were used for the three shot types. However, with the exception of one component for one participant, there were no significant differences between the conditions of task difficulty (easy Vs hard Vs very hard). In Study three (n=6, Age M= 23.7yrs) heart-rate deceleration (HR-D) characteristics for each participant prior to shot execution were explored for good versus poor shots as an indicator of attentional focus. There were clear differences between good and poor performance in the duration of the inter-beat intervals (IBIs). The specific purpose of Study four was to explore the psychological strategies utilised by golfers during their PPRs and the function of the PPRs. A number of key psychological skills were identified including: imagery, self-talk, relaxation techniques, trigger-words, concentration/focusing strategies, and achieving a ‘flow state’. The evidence suggested that the function of PPRs is to focus attention on the task. The findings of all four studies informed the development of practical guidelines for the future use and development of PPRs in golf.

Through case study of the Program "Caminhando com Saúde" can be observed in the socio-political configuration of the field of sport and leisure in goianiense context, and understand its relation with the social inclusion process. This study is inspired by the Bourdieu studies of, in particular in the field theory to understand the dynamics of institutionalization of certain types of public policy for the field of sport and leisure, coupled with the theory of the public policy process, the model in question coalition of advocacy framework developed by Sabatier and Weible, which argues that the process of construction of public policy is linked to beliefs, values and ideas of actors involved in the dispute by the type of policy to be implemented. Moreover, the work converses with specific theories in the area of sport and leisure seeking to understand the phenomenon of sports and leisure practices associated with social and political configuration of contemporary society and for that, returns to the studies of Norbert Elias, regarding the theory of process civilization, to understand sociogenesis sport and leisure and its influence in shaping modern Western society. About the research methodological process was based on the qualitative approach and exploratory. Was used as the methods and techniques to document analysis, direct observation and content analysis. The application of interviews with the actors involved was held to "Caminhando com Saúde" program, users, physical education professionals and public administrator. Results showed that limitations concern public policies of sport and leisure in the city of Goiânia resulting from various factors, such as the low budget allocated to institutional folder, low interest authorizing body to foster and improve the implemented programs and nonparticipation of technical and community body in the design, implementation and mainly reviewed the policies implemented by SEMEL.

Discussions on public policies related to sports and leisure equipment gained prominence after the sportive mega events which the country hosted, once, it is not uncommon to find abandoned places, unused by the population. The objective of this research was to evaluate the public sports and leisure facilities of São José do Rio Pardo / SP State to elaborate a proposal of a virtual platform for conducting debates on sport and leisure in the city. We work with a qualitative research, with bibliographical and field data collection. For field research, we did a data recovery using publics records, available by the national law on information access (Lei de Acesso à Informação) and on-site visits, with photographic records and annotations in a field notebook. The data collected was recorded in the Google My Maps georeferencing tool. The results show that the municipality has 26 sports and leisure equipment, with a wide concentration in the west region. Despite the number, the distribution is flawed, either by the presence in the East and North regions, or by the performance of activities in the West region, characterizing, therefore, a centralization of the offer of sports and leisure activities. Finally, we present a proposal for a virtual platform for the participation of the population in debates on sports and leisure equipment. The formulation is based on three axes: “Know”, where citizens receive information and ask questions; “Build”, where it is possible to register suggestions and discuss proposals; and Choice, where decisions are taken to be implemented in the city.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of the Programa Escola Aberta (PEA) in the field of sport and leisure. This programe is promoted by the Ministério da Educação (MEC) from Federal Government, in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). All the research was based on interviews conducted with those that uses the programe in Contagem/Minas Gerais. This research is relevant due to a lack of studies evaluating the public policies in the field of sport, from the perspective of the targeted beneficiaries. The PEA is a public policy that started to be implemmented in 2004, as a result of discussions about the high levels of violence among the youth in Brazil. Thus, the PEA, in the federal level, articulated partnerships with states and municipal governments to stimulate the opening of public schools, located in problematical social areas with almost none space for leisure and culture, on the weekends. The methodology included questionnaires answered by those who uses PEA in Contagem/Minas Gerais, as well as the analysis of official documents. This analysis allowed to notice the limitations of the program, when related to its central objectives. We questioned if the partnership with the international organization, UNESCO, as well as the incentive to volunteering and the attempt to bring peace to conflicts means a connection between the PEA and the neoliberal ideas, which have been influencing the public policies for the last years. Those who uses the PEA do not have significant participation in the program management or its social control, specially when we analyze those decisions related to sport and leisure. The youth, main group of the PEA, represents only 29,70% of the whole group that the program achieves. In conclusion, we noticed that the PEA works with a narrow concept of citizenship, that emphasizes local actions, which most part of the time stimulates consensus and voluntary actions. We also concluded by stating the limits of all this work focusing in the field of sport and leisure that they are inefficient to the objectives of the program.

Urbanismo esportivo na América do Sul: ordem, espetáculo e operações imobiliárias (1920-1955) / Sport urbanism in South America: order, spectacle and real estate operations (1920-1955)

Millan Valdes, Rodrigo Luis 13 May 2019 (has links)
This dissertation analyses the sport and leisure facilities\' production in three important South American cities, during the 1920-1955 period, when the practice of physical activities and sport was on the rise. This process started during the first decades of the 20th century, when stadia, gymnasia, swimming pools, sporting clubs, velodromes, playgrounds, and other sport facilities within schools and university campuses were often erected by public and/or private agents. That was a time when local and international sporting events were also institutionalized as a part of the urban entertainment offer. Focused on key episodes of the urban history of Montevideo, Santiago and São Paulo, this dissertation tests the following hypothesis: the development of sport and leisure facilities was the result of the combined action of different agents, through the conformation of new practices, policies and institutions. Sport urbanism was guided by four main agendas: the growth of a sport spectacle industry; the incorporation of sport and physical education to heart policies and the education curriculum; the development of nationalist narratives that related sports, fitness and patriotism; and the idea of public and private agents who understood sport facilities as part of major real estate business opportunities. This work demonstrates how the development of sport facilities was the combined result of opposing social forces, mobilized by diverse agendas, interests and theoretical references. Those narratives, originated in various professional fields, such as politics, education, medicine, journalism, engineering, architecture and urbanism; were fundamental in the definition of sport facilities as social needs, drafting public policies to encourage their planning and building, and taking part in the debates about their location, financing strategies and final uses.
