An exploratory study of women's experiences regarding the interplay between domestic violence and abuse and sports eventsSwallow, Jodie January 2017 (has links)
This qualitative study aimed to examine and critically explore women’s accounts as to how their abusive partner’s interest in sport (team combat sports in particular) impacted on the domestic violence and abuse they endured. The study was underpinned by feminist standpoint epistemology and Lacanian theory. Values aligning with feminist standpoint epistemology, such as the nature and balance of power, were central to this research which had at its core the voices of marginalised women. At the stages of analysis and discussion the Lacanian model of the Real, the Symbolic and the Imaginary were used to explore the women’s accounts. This model has afforded new insights into this culturally sensitive topic by removing the focus from the women who sustained abuse to the nature of the abuse they endured. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with nine women who were accessing women’s support services. The women spoke of the abuse they had endured during the course of a heterosexual, intimate relationship. Thematic analysis provided new perspectives regarding the interplay between sport fanaticism and domestic violence and abuse. This thesis extends existing research which has sought to interrogate the association between domestic violence and sporting events (mainly team combat sports). The significance of this study is that it confers deeper, richer understandings regarding the nature of domestic violence and abuse. It reveals how the perpetrators of abuse use violence and/or coercive and controlling behaviours around their sporting interests as a means of asserting power and subjugating their partners. The study is important in that it discloses how the perpetrators perceived some sports, especially football, as preserve which promoted male supremacy. It suggests avenues for further research and reflects upon the cultural significance of sport and team combat sport in particular. The study concludes by suggesting two key points which emerge from this study which underscore the pernicious, chronic and shifting nature of DVA and highlight the need for vigilance in responding to the cultural resources liable to be exploited by perpetrators of abuse.

An exploratory study of stakeholders' perspectives of a mega event in Barbados : the Golf World Cup 2006Sealy, Wendy January 2009 (has links)
Although much has been written on the benefits of hosting 'mega events' including the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup, smaller but still significant sport events of global significance such as the Golf World Cup have received hardly any attention by researchers. This dearth in knowledge has inspired the direction of this study, that is, to explore the stakeholder perspective of the Golf World Cup which was hosted in Barbados in 2006. This event was part of a national development strategy aimed at diversifying the tourism product in the light of the increasing competitiveness of the tourism industry. Consequently the research methodology adopted for this study was eclectic in nature as it sought to obtain a holistic understanding of the issues associated with hosting mega events on a small island microstate. An approach to data collection and analysis was therefore utilised including semi-structured interviews, participant observation and the examination of documents and promotional materials in order to understand the expectations and perceptions that specific stakeholder groups (including local tourism officials, international tourists and local residents) have of the Golf World Cup. The 85 participants in this study highlighted a diversity of views. From the tourism authorities' perspective, the reasons for staging the Golf World Cup were rather cliched. These included using the Golf World Cup as a tool to promote the island as an upmarket golfing destination. The authorities also expected that the Golf World Cup would stimulate tourism demand during a traditionally slow period and provide the island with much needed publicity in overseas tourism markets. However, the fieldwork revealed that the event was unsuccessful due to the poor attendance by both international tourists and local residents. From an international perspective many participants felt that the event was poorly attended due to a lack of awareness in overseas markets and the 'lack of atmosphere' and auxiliary attractions at the golf course. From the local perspective many participants felt that the event lacked appeal and cultural relevance to the host society. Locally, a significant finding is that the event projected an image of catering to an elitist clientele. This image created the perception among local residents that the event was socially exclusive and only served to perpetuate social divisions in society rather than to ameliorate them. Furthermore, many felt that the failure of the event authorities to solicit local participation was because local residents were not part of the decision-making process. This finding further augments the argument that events cannot be successful without local support and participation. The findings in this study can make a worthwhile contribution to the marketing, management and design of future events and the direction of policy formulation for sport events on the island of Barbados. It has illuminated many issues that direct the perceptions, expectations and subsequent purchase behaviour of international tourists and local visitors regarding a mega event on the island of Barbados.

Rights and wrongs : a philosophical consideration of children's participation in elite sportTymowski, Gabriela Izabela January 2002 (has links)
The experiences of some children participating in the demanding and intensive world of elite sport appear to compromise one of the primary aims of both childhood and parenthood, which should be for children to arrive on the threshold of adulthood with their futures open and unlimited. A body of evidence in the medical and socio-psychologicalliterature contends that child athletes participating in elite sport are being harmed physically, psychologically, and socially by the intensive training and competition practices required of athletes in sports such as women's gymnastics, figure skating, and others. Participation by children in the highest levels of sport change attitudes and impels behaviours in ways that are unique in their extent and devastating in their consequences. As the varying and often conflicting agendas of athletes, parents, coaches, agents, and sporting bureaucracies come into conflict, considerations of care and regard for the athletes become down played or even ignored, resulting in these young athletes being harmed, and their futures compromised. Children are characterised by their vulnerability, naivety, and inability to formulate their own life-plans, necessitating a degree of parental paternalism in their relationships with adults. This paternalism is justified by the child's dependency on others for protection, and for developing the necessary skills for self-sufficiency and self-determination secured through their burgeoning autonomy as they advance towards adulthood. Under law, parents are given primary responsibility for the health and welfare of their children, because they are ideally situated to determine their child's best interests. In sport, this responsibility is regularly transferred from the parents to the coach and other involved adults. Unfortunately, however, children may be exploited by the very individuals who are entrusted with their care and nurturance. A further body of evidence claims the inescapability of paternalism in relationships between adults and children in elite sport has been exploited: it is disrespectful of the child's burgeoning autonomy, and jeopardises his or her right to an open future. The child's right to an open future is an autonomy right-in-trust saved until he or she is more fully formed and capable of exercising self-determination. This right may be violated in advance of adulthood by foreclosure of options. In this thesis, I argue that elite sport children require a form of paternalism that protects their interests while at the same time is autonomy-respectful. This is actualised by a bifurcated rights system, which works towards securing non-harmful sports practices and preventing the premature foreclosure of life opportunities for elite child athletes post-sport.

Britain and the Olympic Games 1908-1920 : perspectives on participation and identityHarris, L. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines Britain’s relationship with the Olympic Games between 1908 and 1920, a period which witnesses Britain’s first serious entrance into the Olympics and the development of the Olympic Games into the movement which it is today. This thesis uses the British media as the primary source to analyse and examine the development of the nation’s attitudes and identities towards the Olympics. The Games of this period, from London (1908), Stockholm (1912), Antwerp (1920), along with the preparations for the aborted 1916 Berlin Olympics are considered. The reaction to the British performance at each of the Olympics is the main focus of the research. There is also extensive examination into the periods in between the Games, as at this time the most plentiful discussion regarding the British approach appears, particularly that after the Stockholm Olympics. In an attempt to create a well rounded picture of how the Olympics are perceived across Britain, sections of the press in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales have been examined. Throughout the thesis there are reoccurring themes that appear. British perspectives towards the Olympics and their own identity are considered, and throughout there is analysis regarding this. Athletics is at the centre of British Olympic involvement, but field events are viewed as a poorer cousin to track events by those in England in particular, this thesis examines this identity. The period of this thesis is prominently remembered for the First World War, and consequently the relationship between Britain and Germany from an Olympic perspective is examined.

Alkohol på idrottsevenemang : En kvantitativ studie om sambandet mellan vuxnas alkoholkonsumtion på idrottsevenemang och gymnasieungdomars attityd till alkohol / Alcohol on sporting events : A quantitative study on the relationship between adults' alcohol consumption at sporting events and upper secondary school youths' attitude to alcoholHedberg, Max, Petersson, Sven January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relation between sporting events, where alcohol is served, and the attitude towards alcohol among adolescents. We conducted a survey with 195 respondents, all of whom was students of Swedish upper secondary school. The respondents were between 15 and 18 years of age. The data were analyzed using theories of attitudes and norms. We also analyzed the data using previous research. Results indicated that there is a connection between visiting sports events where alcohol is served and the attitude towards alcohol among these youths. Those who had been on these sporting events in the last year had a more positive attitude towards and more frequently consumed alcohol than those who hadn't been on any of these sporting events.

Atratividade turística em estádios de futebol: visitação no estádio Arena Corinthians / Tourist attraction in soccer stadiums: visitation in Arena Corinthians stadiumRomano, Fillipe Soares 15 October 2018 (has links)
Apontam-se recomendações para ações que abranjam o público do entorno na perspectiva de apropriação, pertencimento e uso do estádio, além de aproximação ao trade turístico para alcançar a meta de ser o principal atrativo turístico na cidade de São Paulo / With the announcement of the construction the Arena Corinthians stadium in the district of Itaquera in São Paulo, inquired about the possible legacies and impacts for the population as a counterpart to hosting the sports megaevents. The present research emerged from the questioning: how the transformations demanded by the mega-sports events 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics can influence the forms of use and appropriation of Arena Corinthians as a segment of tourism and leisure at the city of São Paulo? The overall aim was to analyze the importance of tourism activities at the stadium and, the specific objectives were focused on: to explore the activities that make use of the facilities; examine perception of the social actors of the environment under the perspective of the legacy and/or attraction for the region of Itaquera and the east zone of São Paulo; identify and reflect on the possibilities and potentialities of the use of space. In order to answer the previous questions, a choice of use of the qualitative method of descriptive and exploratory character was made, splited into three distinct moments: bibliographic and documentary analysis and field research, comprised by the participant observation technique, thematic interview, and made by the use of questionnaires to Arena Corinthians and São Paulo Turismo (SpTuris) managers, one hundred visitors from the Casa do Povo Tour, Timão RUN, Monster Jam and Football Open Training, and five visitors from Virada Cultural. As a result of the research, noticed that visitors were unaware of the tourist route at the east zone of São Paulo, some of them were at the stadium for the first time, in this sense, it stands out the importance of attracting the public through multicultural and diversified events that are not related to Sport Club Corinthians Paulista (SCCP). Visitors understand the Arena Corinthians as a legacy and tourist attraction for the city. The perception of the residents corroborates under perception of the tourist attractiveness, nonetheless, they differ especially in the matter of legacy, justified by the generated expectation and not fulfilled in the development of the surroundings. It also pointed out some recommendations for actions in order to cover the surrounding public in the perspective of appropriation, belonging and use of the stadium, as well as approaching the tourist trade to achieve the goals of being the main tourist attraction in the city of São Paulo
