Algebraic decoder specification: coupling formal-language theory and statistical machine translation

Büchse, Matthias 28 January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The specification of a decoder, i.e., a program that translates sentences from one natural language into another, is an intricate process, driven by the application and lacking a canonical methodology. The practical nature of decoder development inhibits the transfer of knowledge between theory and application, which is unfortunate because many contemporary decoders are in fact related to formal-language theory. This thesis proposes an algebraic framework where a decoder is specified by an expression built from a fixed set of operations. As yet, this framework accommodates contemporary syntax-based decoders, it spans two levels of abstraction, and, primarily, it encourages mutual stimulation between the theory of weighted tree automata and the application.

Kultur ist mehr als Currywurst Ältere Literatur im Deutschunterricht : Eine Literaturstudie / Culture behind Currywurst – the use of older literature in teaching German

Glashoff, Birgit January 2016 (has links)
With regards to the teaching of German in Sweden this literature study looks into the Swedish curriculum and the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) to compare today’s common interpretation of the goals in language learning to the educational goals in the documents. Critics mean that the CEFR and in extension the curricula in the associated countries focus mainly on measurable practical language skills. This leads to impoverishment of the concept of language learning, which should include broad cultural aspects, encourage the students to develop their personalities and curiosity and foster a livelong desire to study. This work will try to show that blaming the CEFR for the kind of lopsided development towards practical, measurable skills in language teaching does not origin in the document or in the national curriculum. It appears to be the interpretation of the documents that oversees some essential requirements, not only for successful language teaching but also for the use of German as a tool for conversation and understanding. The real understanding of a language is, according to the research referred to in this work, connected to the understanding of culture. This literature study will show that reading older literature in language classes will favour the students´ understanding of culture. Furthermore, this work will try to point out other educational benefits besides the gain of cultural knowledge in working with literature. Students learn to argue and gain understanding of their own world by comparing to the new reality they meet in the literature. In addition, students will, with the help of the text, acquire new vocabulary and get an understanding of the structure of the language. In essence the use of literature in teaching German on one hand meets and fulfils the requirements in the curriculum and on the other hand supports the development of language skills and personals skills.

Consistency of Probabilistic Context-Free Grammars

Stüber, Torsten 10 May 2012 (has links)
We present an algorithm for deciding whether an arbitrary proper probabilistic context-free grammar is consistent, i.e., whether the probability that a derivation terminates is one. Our procedure has time complexity $\\\\mathcal O(n^3)$ in the unit-cost model of computation. Moreover, we develop a novel characterization of consistent probabilistic context-free grammars. A simple corollary of our result is that training methods for probabilistic context-free grammars that are based on maximum-likelihood estimation always yield consistent grammars.

Novel concepts for lipid identification from shotgun mass spectra using a customized query language

Herzog, Ronny 30 May 2012 (has links)
Lipids are the main component of semipermeable cell membranes and linked to several important physiological processes. Shotgun lipidomics relies on the direct infusion of total lipid extracts from cells, tissues or organisms into the mass spectrometer and is a powerful tool to elucidate their molecular composition. Despite the technical advances in modern mass spectrometry the currently available software underperforms in several aspects of the lipidomics pipeline. This thesis addresses these issues by presenting a new concept for lipid identification using a customized query language for mass spectra in combination with efficient spectra alignment algorithms which are implemented in the open source kit “LipidXplorer”.

Decidability Equivalence between the Star Problem and the Finite Power Problem in Trace Monoids

Kirsten, Daniel, Richomme, Gwénaël 28 November 2012 (has links)
In the last decade, some researches on the star problem in trace monoids (is the iteration of a recognizable language also recognizable?) has pointed out the interest of the finite power property to achieve partial solutions of this problem. We prove that the star problem is decidable in some trace monoid if and only if in the same monoid, it is decidable whether a recognizable language has the finite power property. Intermediary results allow us to give a shorter proof for the decidability of the two previous problems in every trace monoid without C4-submonoid. We also deal with some earlier ideas, conjectures, and questions which have been raised in the research on the star problem and the finite power property, e.g. we show the decidability of these problems for recognizable languages which contain at most one non-connected trace.
