Means to an End: Arab Spring

Tanev, Stefan Latchezarov January 2016 (has links)
The thesis discusses the progress or lack thereof of in the Middle East, specifically Egypt to achieve "democracy". It will critically explore the reasons why the Arab Spring happened, what were the factors and what changed in Egypt during those times until the present. I will show how it was before the revolution in Egypt which toppled ex-president Mubarak, examine the transition phase when ex-president Morsi was in power, and at the end the second revolution or coup d'état by current president El-Sisi. With that said Egypt will be compared with the other countries in the region; Tunisia, Libya and Syria, and we will see what are some of the similarities in the revolutions as well as some of the differences.

Utvärdering av plattformar för tunga Java-klienter

Lindelöw, Björn January 2006 (has links)

Analysis of battles between Jin and Qin during the Spring and Autumn Period

Su, Chia-hung 17 July 2012 (has links)
The research focuses on the war between Jin(®Ê°ê) and Qin (¯³°ê)during the Spring and Autumn period (¬K¬î®É´Á) in China, emphasizing on the 21 battles between Jin and Qin over hundred and twenty six years starting from 672 B.C. till 546 B.C.. Events commenced with Jin attacked Li Jung (Æz¦¥) in 672 B.C. and ending just before the second cease fire treaty (²Ä¤G¦¸«Ú§L¤§·ù) in the Spring and Autumn period in 546 B.C.. The discussion topics include the rationale, proceedings of events and outcome of the battles, with an evaluation of power distribution after the battles. This thesis comprises of 5 chapters: The first chapter is the preface, explaining the motives and aims of this research. It also includes the scope, methods and related literature review of the research. The second chapter dwell on the Battle of Hanyuan (Áúì¤§¾Ô), with Duke Hui of Jin (®Ê´f¤½) and Duke Mu of Qin (¯³¿p¤½) as the main background characters. The third chapter is on the most important battle between Jin and Qin - the Battle of Yao (Ù⤧¾Ô) and four of its related battles. The fourth chapter focuses on the Battle of Linghu (¥Oª°¤§§Ð), Battle of Hequ (ªe¦±¤§¾Ô), Battle of Masui (³ÂÀG¤§¾Ô), Battle of Li (òR¤§§Ð) and 11 other related battles. The conclusion is in three parts: the effect of battles, the findings of research and the integrated analyses. Six important points are made to finalize the importance of battles in the maintenance of relationship between Jin and Qin.

Influence of woody plant on spring and riparian vegetation in central Texas

Shen, Li 15 May 2009 (has links)
With the increase in human population, water resources have become more and more precious. A comprehensive study of water yield characteristics is imperative, especially in water-limited semiarid regions. The objective of this study is to examine spring flow and vegetation cover in a first-order watershed and investigate the herbaceous community structure of upland riparian zones. This study consists of two major components: (1) the effects of environmental factors and vegetation cover on spring flow at Pedernales River upland catchments, and (2) the ecological responses of vegetation to altered flow regimes that result from brush management at the upland riparian zones. The study finds that an average of 3.67% of the monthly water budget of first-order catchments in central Texas is made up of spring flow. The influence of woody plant cover on streamflow was evaluated by comparing spring sites with different percentages of woody cover three times during 2003 and 2004. Our findings indicate that changes in woody plant cover had no influence on the amounts of streamflow from these catchments, and the surface catchment area had only a minor influence. This suggests that the real spring catchment area might be different from the surface watershed boundaries that have been delineated by topography. Plant species richness and diversity gradually decreased with increasing lateral distances from the stream bank. Herbaceous richness and diversity declined with increasing Ashe juniper cover in the riparian zone. Ashe juniper canopy cover had a larger effect on the understory composition than the cover of other woody species. Herbaceous diversity and production was greater in areas with sparse tree density than in areas with no trees, but was lowest at high tree densities. The complete removal of Ashe juniper in the riparian zones is not recommended because of the potential loss of grass cover. The recommended management would be to leave a sparse cover of canopy trees to maintain understory plants.

Let them eat war : the effect of the Libyan Arab Spring on Texas' oil field economy / Effect of the Libyan Arab Spring on Texas' oil field economy

Badlissi, Frederick Joseph 15 August 2012 (has links)
At the beginning of 2011, independence movements arose across the Middle East and stoked the fires of revolution in nations like Libya, Egypt and Syria. Colloquially known as “The Arab Spring,” the movement toppled dictatorships that had existed for decades. Those dictatorships also provided stability for foreign business conducted in their countries, including Texan oil field companies. But as civil unrest persists and the political story unfolds, Texan oil field companies continue to do business in the region, largely unabated. This report addresses the effects of the Arab Spring on the performance of select Texan oil field companies operating in Libya. / text

“We Are All Jordan”: The Dynamic Definition of “We” in the Hashemite Kingdom (The Effects of Identity Precariousness on the Participation of Palestinian-Jordanians)

Karmel, Ezra 25 August 2014 (has links)
This thesis analyses the hirak movements that emerged in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 2011. Amalgamating literature from studies of identity and defensive democratization, the thesis places two central questions into historical context: why did the hirak movements emerge in the rural tribal strongholds of the Hashemite monarchy before spreading into urban centers? And why did the founders of more urban and demographically heterogeneous hirak collectively agree in the nascent stages of their movements’ geneses to underrepresent the presence of Palestinian-Jordanians? / Graduate

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES IN PLANARIAN AND NON-LIVING AQUEOUS SYSTEMS FROM EXPOSURE TO TEMPORALLY PATTERNED MAGNETIC FIELDS

Murugan, Nirosha J. 11 November 2013 (has links)
Planarian maintained in spring water and exposed for two hours to temporally patterned, weak (1 to 5 μT) magnetic field in the dark displayed diminished mobility that simulated the effects of morphine and enhanced this effect at concentrations associated with receptor subtypes. A single (5 hr) exposure to this same pattern following several days of exposure to a very complex patterned field in darkness dissolved the planarian and was associated with an expansion of their volume. Spectral power density analyses of direct measurements of the spring water only following exposure to this field in darkness showed emission spectra that were displayed from control conditions by ~10 nm and associated with an energy increment of ~10-20 J. This value is an intrinsic solution for the physical properties of the water molecule. “Shielding” the exposed water with plastic, aluminum foil or copper foil indicated that only the latter eliminated a powerful spike in photon emission around 280 nm. Continuous measurement of pH indicated that the slow shift towards alkalinity over 12 hours of exposure was associated with enhanced transient pH shifts of .02 units with typical durations between 20 and 40 ms. These results indicate that the appropriately patterned and amplitude of magnetic field that affects water directly could mediate some of the powerful effects displayed by biological aquatic systems.
