Successful Project Management

Horning, Tomomi M. 01 January 2018 (has links)
High project failure rates result in billions of wasted dollars each year. Project failure does not discriminate by type of project or the industry from which they originate. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies that leaders at a health care organization located in Pennsylvania use to manage projects successfully. This population was selected due to the health care organization's reputation for successful project completion. The conceptual framework for this study was Fiedler's contingency theory. Data were collected by conducting semistructured interviews with 9 project leaders and reviewing project documents provided by study participants. Interviews were transcribed, thick descriptions were obtained, and participants were engaged in member checking. The thematic data analysis process consisted of compiling and coding data, identifying patterns, and organizing themes into relevant categories, iteratively. Findings were organized into 4 thematic categories, which were, essential strategies, relationship management, best practices, and self-attunement. Findings from this study may contribute to positive social change if health care leaders can use the information to enhance their project leadership capabilities. When project managers are successful, the benefits cascade to health care organizations. Leaders of those health care organizations can ensure that important health and wellness services are provided and available to those who need them, fund performance improvement initiatives, resource quality programs, and offer innovative services to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities.

Ready Player Green – A case study of sustainability in the Swedish games industry

Lin, Siaoyu January 2022 (has links)
The video games industry is taking more sustainability responsibilities since video games can reach a broad and tremendous audience. Apart from adopting sustainable business strategies, games companies also need to navigate various stakeholders’ expectations and draft strategies to communicate with them. However, despite an abundance of corporate social responsibility literature, there is no existing research specifically focusing on how the video games industry can contribute to this topic. The social and environmental responsibilities of games companies are usually discussed separately. Therefore, this project aims to explain, in the video games industry, how social and environmental impacts are addressed in the form of corporate social responsibility and how companies meet stakeholders’ needs as a part of their sustainable business strategies. Six companies in the Swedish games industry were selected and interviewed. Together with the published sustainability reports, a theory-based content analysis was applied. The results indicate that games companies have mature strategies to tackle social impacts. For environmental impacts, on the contrary, there are no united strategies. The measures used to address environmental impacts vary from corporate to corporate due to the significant differences in business models. Besides publishing documents to communicate with stakeholders, games companies can also communicate sustainability via their games, which can be done by integrating sustainability in game mechanics or as an add-on feature. In conclusion, achieving a competitive advantage is the ultimate goal in engaging corporate social responsibility. Also, stakeholders’ expectations push companies to be more sustainable. Communicating sustainability via games may raise environmental awareness among the players; however, it might only apply to a specific group of people. / Video game is a product that reaches millions of players worldwide. Therefore, it comes with responsibilities for the developers to ensure that the products do not result in negative impacts. Apart from social impacts, such as gender inequality and toxic player communities, there is also a rising environmental awareness among the games companies lately. However, existing research mainly discusses games companies’ social and environmental responsibilities separately. This project aims to explore how games companies address social and environmental issues in sustainability and how they communicate their sustainability efforts to their stakeholders. Six companies in the Swedish games industry were selected and interviewed. Together with the published sustainability reports, a theory-based content analysis was applied. The results show that games companies have a well-developed strategy to tackle social issues. In contrast, the measures to environmental issues vary due to differences in business models and their roles in the value chain. Games companies communicate their sustainability in two forms – through documentation and in-game features. To conclude, the main goal for companies to engage in sustainability is primarily to increase competitive advantage, and stakeholders’ expectations drive their sustainability engagement. Communicating sustainability via games may raise environmental awareness among the players; however, it might only apply to a specific group of people.

Transparency in the Government Communication Process: The Perspective of Government Communicators

Fairbanks, Jenille 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This study presents an understanding of the role of transparency in the communication processes of agencies of the United States Federal Government, as guided by principles of stakeholder management, models of public relations, and a model for government agency communication. These theories and models all suggest that increased openness in organizations will result in improved organizational functioning and in some instances, increases in organizational trust. The perspectives presented in this paper were collected through eighteen semi-structured in-depth interviews of professional communicators for various agencies in the United States Federal Government. The data shows that government communicators recognize the need for transparency in a democratic government, and also illustrates factors that both enhance and constrain transparency. Most of the limited research on government agency communication has focused on media relations and agency spokespersons. The value this exploratory study provides is that it illustrates government communicators understand the value of transparency in communication practices and provides a model for transparency in government agency communication. The research also shows a need for future research to strengthen theory, expand models, and provide examples of how to effectively implement transparency enhancing practices in government communication.

Stakeholder value creation and financial performance of selected JSE firms

Sono, Musa Bryan January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (M.Com. (Accounting)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / For organisations to be successful, they need key stakeholders like shareholders, customers, employees, banks and the community. These stakeholders are essential in any profit-based organisation. All stakeholders have needs, which have to be balanced. However, it is difficult to balance the needs of different stakeholders as they have different preferences. This study seeks to determine how different needs of stakeholders can be balanced and which of these stakeholders an organisation can prioritise to create value in the organisation. The study used a quantitative method to extract secondary data from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The judgemental sampling method was utilised to selected 68 organisations from the JSE, which were utilised to determine which stakeholder has an impact on the value of an organisation. The study did not choose any industry but generalised. The results of the study indicate that shareholders, customers and banks (debtholders) have no effect on the financial performance of the organisation. This means that stakeholders do improve value in an organisation. However, the results further revealed that the community and employees have a positive influence on financial performance. Future researchers can choose one industry to determine how these particular stakeholders influence the financial performance of organisations in a particular industry. In addition, more stakeholders can be identified that are key to organisations. / National Research Fund through Risk and Vulnerability Science Centre

Innovation adoption case study and the potential of Blockchain on Trade Single Window : Identification of adoption challenges and suggestions for Pakistan Single Window

Xu, Pan, Baigy, Esmaeil January 2022 (has links)
Governments facilitate cross-border trade to boost economy. Many developed countries have adopted the national Trade Single Window (SW) solution which has a single-entry point for all trade-related papers. However, adoption of such new technology is difficult, especially for less developed countries. Through the example of Pakistan, we shed light on how adopting situation of SW in a developing country is like. Attempts to provide advice for adoption at organizational and individual levels; show appropriate approaches for developing countries; and bridge the SW knowledge gap between the developed and developing worlds. After interviewing ten Pakistani Single Window (PSW) stakeholders, this paper utilizes a thematic analysis to summarize the findings in two theoretical frameworks, the Theory of Acceptance Model with the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Technology-Organization-Environment Framework, from multiple perspectives. Our findings reveal: firstly, that individuals' perceptions of new technology are hampered by a lack of corresponding skill sets and knowledge. Secondly, limited organizational resources and a lack of technological maturity impede adoption. Finally, governmental pressure and support significantly influence stakeholders' adoption in Pakistan. According to the study, people and organizations in Pakistan are involved in corruption during trade; therefore, losing control to old systems has made them resist adoption. We suggest that Blockchain technology potentially enhance PSW adoption alongside with its improvements, but only if the necessary resources and infrastructure would be available, which are missing in Pakistan right now. This study has significant theoretical implications for innovation adoption and practical implications for SW rollout in developing countries, and ultimately, it points to the opportunity for future research.

Mega-events can be understood as one of the most important political initiatives of the modern era, as it promotes transformative impacts on the population and the place where they happen, according to Horne & Whannel (2016). Thus, the mega-events, according to Zhai et al. (2009), need higher investment, greater complexity, diversity of stakeholders and suffer broader influences compared to simple projects. In this sense, we sought to promote a synergy between the diversity of stakeholders and the transformative impacts of the mega-event, culminating in the objective of this study: analyze the effects of the mega-event, Olympic Games Rio 2016, in the territory of Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, under the prism of different stakeholders during the accomplishment of these Games. In order to perform this analysis, we first carried out the survey of secondary data through a review of the specialized literature, using the method webibliomining and proknow-c. Then, the primary data were collected through participatory observation and interviews conducted throughout the territory of Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, the object of this study. These interviews presented two approaches: questionnaires focused on passers-by and questionnaires focused on entrepreneurship. In all, 71 respondents participated in the interviews that presented a qualitative approach. However, it should be noted that for the analysis of the primary data, the methods of descriptive statistics and content analysis were used. After the results obtained through data processing and confrontation between primary and secondary, was verified that the heterogeneity of the local stakeholders of Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon produced distinct perceptions about the Olympic Games, directly influencing the management of these mega-event. Therefore, managing the local stakeholders can contribute to the effectiveness of the desired results of megaprojects, generating benefits to, perhaps, a legacy.

Social Responsibility Strategies to Improve Firm Performance

Reade, Dennis Vincent 01 January 2017 (has links)
Historical research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its influence on corporate financial and social results arrived at contradictory findings. Although 95% of the world's 250 largest corporations reported investing in CSR activities in 2011, some managers lack strategies to evaluate CSR effectiveness. This multiple case study explored strategies that 6 CSR managers with CSR oversight in privately owned companies in Brazil used to effectively enact CSR. The stakeholder theory was the conceptual framework for this study. Data were collected through individual interviews and supplemented with company annual reports to explore the strategies managers employed to evaluate CSR effectiveness. Member checking sessions helped to validate the data. The data analysis consisted of coding and grouping key words to identify themes. Seven themes emerged from the findings. Key themes revealed: leadership proactively communicate their CSR activities, economic and social returns are difficult to measure, and personal values and beliefs of CSR managers influence decisions. Key findings include stakeholder management is gradually becoming a significant component of corporate strategy, and half of the CSR managers acted independently of stakeholders prior to making decisions on CSR expenditures. The implications for social change include addressing stakeholders' needs in ways that create vibrant communities, contributing to social cohesion; respect for human rights; enhanced social commitment; and support for environmentally sustainable practices.
