Estimation of the standard deviation by order statistics: the range, the average range, and some quasi ranges

Goldsmith, Bernard P. January 1957 (has links)
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University / Some rapid approximate methods of estimating the standard deviation from samples of moderate size (20 < n < 100) are presented. The emphasis is placed on solutions of problems commonly encountered in statistical quality control, especially in the electronics industry. Factors and efficiency values are given for the use of these estimators on normally distributed data. Statistical and practical engineering and administrative criteria are suggested for testing whether particular estimators are desirable in the usual industrial situation. The estimates discussed in this paper are all order statistics, i.e. statistics which are a function of only a small number of observations selected from the whole sample. These observations are selected because of the position they occupy among the other observations when all sample observations are arranged in order of magnitude. The first estimator discussed, for instance, is the range. The range of a sample is merely the numerical difference between the largest member of the sample and the smallest member of the sample. The standard deviation of the distribution from which the sample was drawn may be estimated by dividing the range by a suitable constant. The constant is a function of the sample size and of the shape of the distribution. Factors are given for sample sizes up to ten, for the normal distribution only. [TRUNCATED]

Market value, book value and goodwill

Ibrahim, Muhd Kamil January 1999 (has links)
This thesis examines the value relevance of goodwill that has been eliminated through reserves in the year of acquisition. Specifically, it investigates the association beiween goodwill reserve write-off and the value placed on the firm by the stock market. In so doing, the thesis describes the relationship between the implied value of purchased goodwill and that of other assets, and we seek to explain the underlying paffern of the amortisation of goodwill over time. The empirical method uses cross-sectional equity valuation models for the period 1994- 6. Based on the modified balance sheet identity, the equity valuation model parameterises purchased goodwill and other assets separately, and a more meaningful interpretation is given of the intercept term than in previous studies relating to purchased goodwill. The results confirm that the market incorporates information on the goodwill reserve write-off in the valuation of a firm, and the results also show that the market: book ratio is similar to tangible assets but its behaviour suggests a relatively higher amortisation rate. Although the present study provides evidence supporting the requirement in FRS 10 (Goodwill and Intangible Assets) to capitalise purchased goodwill, the findings also show that the incremental value of capitalised goodwill declines far more quickly than FRS1O suggests, thus placing particular importance on the impairment test required by FRS 10.

Standardizované technologie z pohledu soutěžního práva EU / Standardised Technologies from the EU Competition Law Perspective

Mňuk, Jiří January 2015 (has links)
Technologies that implement particular standards securing compatibility and interoperability govern our everyday lives. Given that on the one hand technical standards should be accessible to the largest possible extent and on the other hand intellectual property right (IPR) holders may restrict such access, a number of legal issues arise. This thesis primarily focuses on technical standards governed by standard-setting organizations and consequences of the inclusion of intellectual property rights (IPRs) in such standards for their proprietors from the EU competition law perspective. In this regard, the method adopted in this thesis firstly explores the underlying theoretical notions, then focuses on the current EU competition law position de lege lata and discusses possible adjustments thereof de lege ferenda. In the first chapter, technical standards are discussed along with their economic effects, particularly, compatibility, interoperability and network effects. Second chapter lays down the basic matters of interplay between technical standards, IPRs and EU competition law, namely standard-essential patents (SEPs) and fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing terms. Current EU competition law issues are consequently outlined (patent ambush, hold-up) with emphasis on Commission's...

Routing MIDI messages in a shared music studio environment / Routing Musical Instrument Digital Interface in a shared music studio environment

Mosala, Thabo Jerry January 1995 (has links)
The Rhodes Computer Music Network (RHOCMN) is a network which allows main studio resources to be shared. RHOCMN is growing into a multi-workstation environment and additional devices are being incorporated into the system. A star configuration is used for transmitting MIDI from a MIDI patch bay to the workstations and MIDI devices. This imposes several disadvantages on the use of the studio, such as wiring problems. In a quest to avoid problems related to MIDI in RHOCMN, the MIDINet system was developed. The idea was to acquire a viable solution to MIDI's main problems which does not involve a redefinition of the MIDI specification.

Consumer practices of low income families in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Halifax

Geoffrey, Barbara January 1968 (has links)
This is a study of low income family expenditure patterns in urban Canada based on data contained in the National Urban Low Income Family Evaluation study. The structured interview method with open-ended questions as set up in the NULIFE study offered data gathered between January 1 to April 15, 1967. Using this data, the relationships between total family income and expenditures on shelter, food and all other expenditures were examined. This data also shows that the relationship between expenditures on shelter, food, and other basic expenses were related to family sizes of one, three, and five person families within Vancouver, Winnipeg and Halifax. Correlation coefficients yielded two negative correlations about expenditures on shelter and food, inferring a positive correlation about expenditures on all other expenses. Findings showed a relationship between income and expenditure as follows: as income increases, percentage of expenditure on shelter and food decreases. At the same time, there was an increased percentage of income spent on other categories grouped together. Relationships for different family sizes and regions indicated trends between the expenditure on shelter, food, and all other basic expenses. Public housing areas within the Winnipeg and Halifax samples influence shelter costs. The one person family had the highest percentage expenditure on shelter in all three cities, whereas the five person family generally had the highest percentage expenditure on food. The three person family had the highest percentage expenditure on all other basic expenses. The Vancouver sample generally had the highest income. With a slightly lower income than Vancouver, the Winnipeg sample had the lowest percentage expenditure on shelter and the highest on all other basic expenses. Halifax, with the lowest income had the highest percentage expenditure on shelter, generally the highest on food, and the lowest percentage expenditure on all other basic expenses. This project has limited value due to the fact that the computer did not produce data such as age and composition of family units which might have yielded more detailed information. / Arts, Faculty of / Social Work, School of / Graduate

Langue enseignée et dialecte arabe : quelle méthodologie et quelle formation pour l'acquisition de la compétence communicative en arabe standard : le cas des lycéens libyens / Language taught and arabic dialect

Dardour, Farag 15 December 2008 (has links)
This thesis investigates the main reasons for the problems encountered in the teaching and learning of standard Arabic in Libya, specifically in speaking. Firstly I provide an overview of the evolution of Arabic and the development of Libyan dialects, while specifying the main differences between standard Arabic and Arabic dialects with regard to phonology, grammar and lexis. Secondly the thesis underscores the issues at hand in the teaching of Arabic, and suggests a reform of the way the language is taught in Libya, in view of trying to improve the overall level of standard Arabic whose present state is worrying. The thesis also addresses the Libyan educational system and the issue of Arabic, while stressing the failings of the system. I adopted two approaches. The first approach is theoretical whereby I analyzed present day research on linguistic problems in language teaching. The second is field work which provided statistical evidence thanks to an inquiry among learners and teachers. The whole issue is getting the learners to engage in an active learning process by a dynamic acquisition of language that takes into account cultural and cognitive features of the process. To guarantee efficiency and objectivity direct classroom observations were undertaken in order to identify effective practice in the Arabic classroom. I was thus in a position to observe firsthand the procedures adopted by the teachers and assess the learners' reactions.

Underlag till standard för generatorinspektion

Olsson, Annelie January 2016 (has links)
Abstract Vattenfall is about to create a standard that will be used during inspections of their generators. The method chosen to create the new standard is to speak with people that works with the inspection of the generators. They have a lot of experience and knows how to interpret signs and when it is time to maintain the generator. The purpose is to see and take care of problems before they lead to a breakdown. That is made by using condition based maintenance. To estimate how to do the right assessment when noticing different behaviour of the generator was not the only problem. It is also difficult to understand what should be checked during inspection and there for a new inspection list has been created. To make data collection useful there must be a proper way in handling data. When handling data in a correct manner the opportunity to make the right decisions based on facts increase.
