THE EMERGENT PROSODIC SYSTEM(S) OF BILBAO-AREA STANDARD BASQUE

Thomas, Airica C.R. 01 May 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study is to contribute to the larger body of research concerned with the prosodic systems of the Basque dialects currently spoken in Southern Basque country. More specifically, the author focuses on Standard Basque from the Bilbao area and its potential prosodic system(s). Standard Basque was phonologically codified by the Basque Academy, but there was no prosodic system provided by the Basque Academy. Although initial investigations have been undertaken by Hualde, more current research has shown that the standard spoken outside of the classroom is different from that which is taught (Lantto, 2019; Rodríguez-Ordóñez, 2016). Given that prosody is rarely taught within the classroom, it would not be surprising for differences to be found. The most obvious difference between Standard Basque and some of the traditional dialects is that Standard has no word-level contrastive stress; functions such as singular/plural distinctions and case are marked by postpositions. What has been determined is that the prosodic system of Standard Basque, or Batua, patterns closely to that of Gipuzkoan Basque. However, as noted by Hualde & Elordieta (2014), there is little knowledge regarding the variation of the functioning of Standard Basque’s acoustic correlates. As stated by Elordieta & Hualde (2001), it is only after a comparison of the intonational characteristics of the currently spoken dialects has been conducted that a typological categorization of Basque prosodic systems can be made. As Standard Basque was not codified with a prosodic system, it ultimately comes down to what individual speakers and speaker groups have done to account for this in their standard dialect productions. It cannot be presumed that the prosody of SB (Standard Basque) found in one region will exactly line up with prosody found in other regions; these too would need to be documented and analyzed as prosodic sub-systems. One major gap in current research is the analysis of intonation at the phrasal level; Gaminde et al. (2011) look at acoustic correlates and their respective force, but only at the word level. While Hualde looks at intonation, the study uses Gipuzkoan Basque used as a substratum, which constricts the findings to that particular dialectal region. For this reason, the dialect of Batua spoken in the Bilbao area proves to be worth investigating. The local dialect of the area was long ago lost, such that Batua could be said to be the Bilbao dialect. The revitalization movement of the 1960s brought about a significant number of new speakers, who learned the standard variety in school. To add to this, Bilbao’s presence as a major commercial hub has made it so that there is a vast number of regional vernaculars circulating throughout the area, all in contact with one another. For this study, data was taken from 6 Basque-Spanish bilinguals whose primary dialect of Basque is the standard, that participated in two experimental tasks: eliciting words in isolation in one task and eliciting neutral declaratives and yes-no questions in the other. These tasks were a means of gathering raw data on the intonation of both word and phrasal level productions. Results supports the previous findings of Gaminde et al. (2015) as well as those of Aurrekoetxea et al. (2015), in terms of how stress is realized in Standard Basque when taking into account factors such as syllable weight and syllable count. What’s more, findings also support the proposition of Hualde & Beristain (to appear) that inter-speaker variation will be heavily affected by the contact speakers have with other dialects of Basque.

Creating a virtual standard curve for quantitative PCR

Lively, Brianna 10 March 2022 (has links)
The use of standards in quantitative PCR (qPCR) is essential, especially in forensic cases, to determine the concentration of DNA in an unknown sample. The standard curve for Quantifiler Trio is commonly made up of a ten-fold serial dilution of the known DNA standard in the qPCR kit. Due to the known concentration of the standard and the serial dilution, the threshold cycle values of the standards can be compared to the cycle threshold values of the unknown samples to determine their concentrations. Use of the Quantifiler Trio kit provides the concentration of total human DNA, including both small autosomal and large autosomal amounts which are used to calculate a degradation ratio, and also determines the concentration of male DNA in the sample. Each aspect has its own standard curve to determine the DNA concentration. However, serial dilutions cause variance between runs, even when using the same samples, due to small pipetting differences or errors which can make sample reruns and verifying data difficult. Creating a virtual curve by using data from multiple serial dilutions would minimize or eliminate the variance between runs. This is accomplished by taking the averages of slopes and y-intercepts of the standards to creature the virtual curve.

Assessment of knowledge and factors affecting student nurses’ compliance regarding standard precautions for preventing tuberculosis and HIV in eSwatini University

Gina, Ncobile Sidzandza Victoria January 2020 (has links)
Introduction and background: Tuberculosis (TB) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are among the top ten causes of death globally. To prevent the spread of these infections in a hospital setting, health care workers and students should apply a set of principles called “standard precautions”. However, student nurses were found not complying to the standard precautions for prevention of Tuberculosis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus when allocated for clinical practice in the Eswatini healthcare setting. Many studies from different countries have shown non-use of protective clothing and students' failure to adhere to standard precautions. The knowledge of student nurses on standard precautions and the factors affecting their compliance regarding standard precautions had not been determined in-depth in the past. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to assess knowledge and factors affecting student nurses’ compliance to standard precautions with the intention of recommending measures that can be taken to facilitate this compliance among student nurses. Methodology: A non-experimental quantitative approach was used to conduct a survey on senior student nurses of Eswatini University using questionnaires. The total population of third, fourth- and fifth-year students was selected through census sampling method. A Statistical Package for Social Science version 26 software was used to analyze the data. Findings: Among the student nurses asked, 91% were found to have adequate knowledge on standard precautions but they did not comply on washing hands and wearing gloves, safety glasses and aprons. Factors which influence compliance among student nurses were found to be: adequate knowledge, students’ willingness to take measure, hospital support through training and infection control policies, supportive nurses, availability of the post- exposure prophylaxis, the university’s continuous support, lack of resources and poor role- modelling. Recommendations: The researcher recommends that TB and HIV prevention skills be demonstrated to student nurses in the skills laboratory and that clinical facilitators should accompany students in the clinical area. In the hospitals, ordering and monitoring of supplies should be done well to eliminate shortage of resources and preceptors should be exempted from other duties so that they can be able to supervise student nurses. / Dissertation (MCur (Advanced Nursing Education))--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Nursing Science / MCur (Advanced Nursing Education)

Standarder för att mäta byggnaders lufttäthet / Standards to measure buildings airtightness

Johansson, Emmy, Spahic, Alisa January 2016 (has links)

Lundin, Susan January 2014 (has links)
This work is based on an existing drawing designed by Arkinova Arkitekter, and is adapted to normal level of accessibility. The drawing consists of five apartments, with each apartment covering a total floor area between 36-64 m2. To improve accessibility for disabled groups, the apartments have been re-designed to a higher level of accessibility using BIM software Revit Architecture based on SS (Swedish Standard) 91 42 21:2006 and 91 42 22:2006. The purpose of this study was to investigate the additional costs associated with an increased accessibility; these additional costs were calculated in the spreadsheet program BidCon. The result showed that in order to comply with SS’ recommendation around increased accessibility, the floor area in the original drawing had to be increased by 84 m2 to allow increased mobility. This corresponds to a total increase of 25 %, which resulted in an additional costs of 126 014 SEK (22 % increase) including material for walls, doors and floor slab.

Formal verification of initial network entry protocols in wimax networks.

Komu, Beth Njeri. January 2012 (has links)
M. Tech. Electrical Engineering. / Discusses the study as limited to the formal specification/modelling and formal verification of protocols proposed and applicable to the initial network entry procedure in WiMAX networks. Secondly, formal specification of the existing protocols under consideration will be based on their informal specification available in the literature and not on proprietary protocols for which little or no information is available. Thirdly, this research work does not intend to wipe out the state space explosion problem but rather applies existing optimization techniques to supress it. Finally, the study does not assess the usability performance impact of the proposed security scheme and thus recommends that this analysis should be done as future work to evaluate the functionality and soundness of deploying the proposed security scheme.

The use of third person accusative pronouns in spoken Brazilian Portuguese: an analysis of different TV genres

Stocco Garcia, Flavia 09 January 2016 (has links)
This thesis presents an analysis of third person accusative pronouns in Brazilian Portuguese. With the aim to analyze the variation between the use of standard (prescribed by normative grammar) and non-standard pronouns found in oral language, I gathered data from three kinds of TV show (news, non-scripted and soap-opera) in order to determine which form of pronoun is more common and if there is any linguistic and/or sociolinguistic factors that will influence on their usage. Based on data collected, I demonstrate that non-standard forms are favored in general and that the rules prescribed by normative grammar involving standard forms are only followed in specific contexts. Among all the variables considered for the analysis, the ones that showed to be significant were the kind of show, the context of the utterance, the socio-economic status of the speaker and verbs in the infinitive. Considering my results, I provide a discussion regarding to which extent the distribution of the 3rd-person pronouns on TV reflect their use by Brazilians and a brief discussion of other issues related to my findings conclude this work. / February 2016
