barbaramichel@absamail.co.za / The focus of this action research study was to facilitate a field generated process to develop guidelines towards standards of practice for peer education. Peer education has been widely used across the globe and often in health oriented fields. In South Africa, peer education practice is marked by the lack of agreed standards and guidelines together with a lack of empirical evidence of its impact on beneficiary groups. The researcher consulted with over 200 individuals who are, in some way, connected or involved in the management of peer education or programmes focussing on youth. The research confirmed the lack of an agreed definition of peer education, the need for guidelines and eventually standards of practice for peer education. There was consensus that peer education was considered a ‘valuable strategy’ despite a chronic lack of reporting, monitoring and clear goals for most programmes. An additional challenge was the lack of evaluation of the benefit of peer education to beneficiaries. Programmes lack underpinning theories, and often are implemented in an attempt to ‘help’ communities in any way possible. Lack of a systemic approach and lack of agreed performance standards, perpetuates peer education interventions that fail due to avoidable challenges that could have been averted with more attention to planning and systematic organisation.
The research proposes that with agreed standards and support to implement and build capacity at national and provincial level, peer education could become a flagship for the prevention, care and support to many communities, particularly where there is a chronic lack of resources.

What Makes a Successful College or University Programming Board?: Standards of Practice for Programming BoardsPage, Megan Alene 06 May 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to seek an understanding of the characteristics of successful college and university programming boards (CUPBs). Specifically, I explored the organization and management; human, financial, and facility resource; campus and community relationship; program; mission; assessment and self-evaluation; and leadership characteristics of CUPBs. For purposes of this study, successful programming boards were defined and identified by professionals who work in this area of student affairs administration.
To obtain the sample for this study, student affairs professionals who work with college and university programming boards and are members of the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) were contacted. Members were asked to identify successful programming boards in their NACA region. Based on the programming boards identified through this process, the most successful programming boards for each of the seven NACA regions were identified. There were 22 total programming boards included in the study's sample.
An Institutional Profile (IP) form was created with items that related to the research questions posed in this study. Document analysis was conducted on texts and reports obtained from advisors of the sample's programming boards. Additional information was obtained through interviews with these advisors. Responses that were qualitative in nature were analyzed and assigned to response categories. The data that were quantitative in nature were analyzed by calculating frequency and/or range and mean scores.
The data revealed significant results for each of the seven characteristics explored in the study. The findings suggest ways to structure and staff CUPBs, how to select and train student leaders, how to manage human and financial resources, how to manage facilities, and the types and numbers of programs successful CUPBs sponsor. Recommendations about the mission of successful CUPBs were identified, as were ways to assess outcomes and advise the programming board. Collectively, the results describe the elements of successful CUPBs. These elements can be used to establish standards of practice for such boards and the staff who manage them. / Master of Arts

A therapist moving beyond therapy into applied theatre practice : a personal account by a Rogerian practitionerBaker, Erin Sullivan January 2014 (has links)
As a Rogerian mental health therapist, a personal journey was taken that establishes my practice ethics as an applied theatre practitioner. What was undertaken was the unpacking of a practice ethics gained through my training as an actor and therapist. This thesis examines the role of codes or standards of practice in humanistic counselling, applied theatre and a synthesized practice between both. Standards of practice shape these practices through the specific ideologies relevant within the institutional cultures in which the practice is applied. This is especially problematic when the institutional setting understands care delivery as practice shaped by problem identification, interventions and expected outcome goals. Further, the ideology that underpins the standard, becomes self-reinforcing and tends to exert influence over what type of practice is culturally relevant or considered best practice within the institutional setting. This is of concern for practitioners who practice from a different or multiple ideological base from the institutional setting in which they work. A shaping goal of the research was to test-out, through critical evaluation, if the American Counseling Association's (ACA's) standards of practice was relevant and applicable to a synthesized practice between humanistic counselling practice and applied theatre practice. The results posed by the critical evaluation suggest that the ACAs standard is not applicable because it promotes empirical, or rather, evidenced-based models of practice over humanist ones. Because of its limited scope of application, the ACAs model is not applicable to synthesized or dual practices that bridge particular fields. Through lines of valuing within bridged fields, usually represent multiple ideological drivers. It was found that as a standard of practice the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) standard is a better fit. It is compatible with social construction. Within the research Carl Rogers' humanistic, client-centered and non-directive therapy is contrasted with Joseph Chaikin's brand of experimental theatre exemplified in his The Presence of the Actor. Chaikin's book is used as a tool to reconstruct examples of what I came to understand as ethical practice while attending drama school in the UK. The understandings gleaned by the juxtaposition impacts how I understand the ACAs utility as a practitioner.

Divorce, however, also entails social problems which are not addressed in our legal system. It appears further that our adversarial legal system tends to heighten the conflicting interests of individual family members at divorce and to encourage animosity and irreconcilability.
In an attempt to ameliorate the harsh consequences of the adversarial legal system at divorce, two no-fault grounds for divorce were introduced to enable divorcing spouses to make the decision about the termination of their marriage themselves. This greater freedom that no-fault divorce afforded parties quickly led to a demand for a new system of dispute resolution at divorce. The Hoexter Commission consequently, recommended the establishment of a family court with a social component where mediation services are offered. In both Australia and New Zealand the introduction of no-fault divorce was attended by the establishment of family courts where mediation services are offered. In mediation the parties involved, with the assistance of an impartial third, may sort out and find solutions to all their divorce-related problems. It also appears that mediation has always played a prominent role in the resolution of family disputes in the indigenous communities of South Africa.
Owing to financial restrictions, South Africa is still without a family court. So far, only the Mediation in Certain Divorce Matters Act 24 of 1987 has emanated from the recommendations of the Hoexter Commission. This Act, which provides for the institution of enquiries by the office of the family advocate to determine the best interests of children at divorce, professes in its title to have introduced mediation as an alternative system of dispute resolution at divorce. From the contents of the Act it is apparent, however, that it provides for mediation only in a very limited sense. Consequently, it is necessary to amend this Act to make provision for real, comprehensive and accessible mediation services for the public in all family law disputes. Animal-assisted therapy and equine-assisted therapy/learning in Canada: surveying the current state of the field, its practitioners, and its practicesSchlote, Sarah M. 02 July 2009 (has links)
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and equine-assisted therapy/learning (EAT/L) are innovative techniques in counselling, psychotherapy, mental health, coaching, and other personal growth interventions. Although this field has experienced tremendous growth in the United States, very little is known about its Canadian equivalent. The purpose of this study was therefore to examine the current state of AAT and EAT/L in Canada, by conducting a national, bilingual (English and French) survey of helping professionals who involve animals in their practices. A total of 131 questionnaires were retained for analysis. The results of this study suggest that the field is very diverse, with a multitude of confusing terms and expressions, varying levels of education and training, and disagreement on how different practices are defined, resulting in a fragmented, confusing and inconsistent appearance. Recommendations for the evolution of the field and suggestions for future research are provided.

L'intégration et la négociation du rôle de l'infirmière praticienne en soins de santé primaires en contexte de collaboration interprofessionnelleRioux-Dubois, Annie 17 January 2019 (has links)
La prestation coordonnée de soins de santé primaires (SSP) a été éprouvée comme améliorant la qualité et l’accès des soins prodigués aux Canadiens. Plusieurs études ont notamment confirmé les avantages des infirmières praticiennes (IP) et des modèles interprofessionnels en SSP pour le système de santé. Les écrits suggèrent toutefois que l’intégration des IP en SSP est jalonnée de tensions et restructurations en raison d’une confusion supposée de leur rôle. À ce jour, les recherches ont principalement ciblé les barrières et facilitateurs de l’intégration du rôle des IP. Une analyse critique des dynamiques socioprofessionnelles et politiques de l’intégration des IP n’a toutefois pas encore été réalisée. Une ethnographie critique combinant la Théorie de l’acteur-réseau et les concepts foucaldiens de discours, savoir et pouvoir a permis l’examen des interactions sémiotiques caractérisant certains milieux de SSP. Différents modèles interprofessionnels de SSP (2 centres de santé communautaire, 2 équipes de santé familiale et 2 cliniques dirigées par les IP) ont été investis. Les données issues d’entrevues semi-dirigées avec des IP (n=23), d’observations directes de milieux et de rencontres interprofessionnelles, et d’analyse documentaire ont été soumises à une analyse thématique puis une analyse critique de discours. Les résultats montrent que la valeur morale des IP, les finalités organisationnelles des milieux de SSP, les normes de pratique, la collaboration interprofessionnelle et la prise en charge des patients disposent les IP à la négociation de leur rôle et à certains enjeux socioprofessionnels et politiques qui génèrent plusieurs contrecoups: pluralisme de leurs rôles professionnels, dissonance identitaire, sentiments d’incompétence et d’incertitude, glissements discursifs dans leurs propres discours, et divers états émotionnels et souffrances. Ces contrecoups commandent diverses stratégies d’adaptation et de résistance permettant aux IP de gérer ces tensions. Plusieurs entités non-humaines (inscription des clientèles, discours de soutien aux médecins et espaces physiques) émergent comme acteurs agissant sur l’intégration et la négociation du rôle des IP en SSP. Cette étude permet de décrire le processus de traduction du rôle de l’IP en SSP qui problématise certains discours tenus pour acquis en SSP. Elle permet également de proposer une nouvelle définition de l’intégration du rôle des IP en SSP.
